ABSTRACT
Comparative analysis of clinical efficacy of 3 antihomotoxic homeopathic preparations (Traumeel S, Engistol and Echinacea compositum S) with non-specific immunostimulating and anti-inflammatory effects was performed. The study showed that Traumeel S had maximal anti-inflammatory effect. In proportion as destructive process weighting the efficacy of homeopathic preparations was decreased. The preparations are indicated for comprehensive treatment of inflammatory periodontal diseases in patients with burdened allergic status or heavy concomitant pathology.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Ocular allergy is a common complaint of allergy sufferers, many of whom may choose to use complementary and alternative medicine in the treatment of these symptoms. In this review major complementary and alternative medicine modalities including herbal therapies, acupuncture, homeopathy, alternative immunotherapy and behavior modification are assessed for evidence of their effectiveness in the treatment of ocular allergy symptoms. RECENT FINDINGS: Certain herbs including Euphrasia officinalis, Petasites hybridus and Argemone mexicana have been evaluated in control studies in the treatment of ocular allergy. Honey is no more effective than placebo in the treatment of ocular allergy. Acupuncture used regularly has demonstrated some positive trends in ocular allergy sufferers. Homeopathy has shown conflicting results in the treatment of ocular allergy, while alternative forms of immunotherapy have been shown to develop immunologic tolerogenic effects in the control of the condition. SUMMARY: Several forms of complementary and alternative medicine have been studied for their effectiveness in treatment of ocular allergy symptoms. Further research is needed to assess mechanisms of action and to establish practice guidelines for the use of these modalities

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported the consumption of 235 million doses of antibiotics in 2001. It is estimated that 20-50 percent of these were unnecessarily prescribed for viral infections. Bacteria that antibiotics have controlled in the past are increasingly developing resistance to these drugs. Today, virtually all important bacterial infections in the United States and throughout the world are becoming resistant. For this reason, antibiotic resistance is among the CDC's top concerns. A large portion of antibiotics are dispensed by pediatricians treating common outpatient infectious diseases. The overuse of antimicrobials is beginning to be discouraged as scientific evidence is emerging to support the use of other therapies. In pediatric practice an emphasis on accurate diagnoses, control of environmental risk factors, and utilization of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies could reduce antibiotic prescribing. Antibiotic resistance poses a growing threat to health. CAM therapies may provide a safer, more effective treatment for many acute infections of childhood.

Warts and molluscums contagiosums are two benign viral skin diseases that commonly affect children. Contamination occurs by autoinoculation or during skin to skin contact. Molluscums contagiosums are more frequent in immunodeficient and atopic children. Swimming-pool practice and contact sports favour warts transmission. The choice of treatment depends upon the age of the child and the number and location of the lesions. Natural resolution can be awaited when lesions are limited. In first intent, curettage of the lesions under local anesthesia for molluscums contagiosums, salicylic acid preparation or cryotherapy according to location for warts, are the treatment of choice. In neither affection school ousting is necessary.

Health and disease are not stable conditions, but vital concepts subject to constant evaluation and change. The main reference through which the health-disease process are based, most commonly refers to concepts of the nineteenth century, where the predominant thoughts was related to germ theory, ie, the identification of a pathogen causing a lesion (inflammation) related to symptoms. However, the evolution of epidemiological studies has shown that there are many gaps in our understanding of the process of health and illness. This paper aims to highlight some aspects of the medical literature dealing with the concept of disease and health, exposing the dilemma of the variability of clinical manifestations or expressions and highlight some points of homeopathic doutrine on these same aspects, analyzing possible interfaces between these knowledge. For this, we start with a brief revision of basic and current concepts of immunobiology. Then, we highlight aspects of the health-disease process in homeopathic doctrine contained in the Organon da arte de curar, Doenças Crônicas sua natureza peculiar e sua cura homeopática of Samuel Hahnemann and the book Lições de filosofía homeopática of James Tyler Kent. We discuss the visions of health-and disease causation on the themes of Experimental Pathology and hygienic hypothesis and finally saw some historical aspects of the evolution of health care and causation process. We conclude by showing the interrelationship between the different approaches of the health-disease concept studied by us, and especially how homeopathy relates to these approaches, containing the most important features historically associated with the mode of illness in humans.
