The Jinling version of the Compendium of Materia Medica was the primary version.It accurately represented the ideas of LI Shizhen, therefore it was valued by the scholars.There were many defects in misprint (knife carving) and proofreading.The main errors were some Chinese character's strokes missing and wrong characters printed.The authors collected some statistics data andmade some statistical analysis. They found that total misprints were 376 and emerge 615 times.Those misprints can divide into two categories: lack of some parts of Chinese characters; lack of some strokes of Chinese characters.Four tables which list the misprints was made.It is helpful for scholars to examine Compendium of Materia Medica or the study of other similar ancient literatures.

The Compendium of Materia Medica is a magnum opus, in which a large number of literatures were cited. By searching with keywords, there were 30 citations related with Hua Tuo in this book. However, some citations were not specific, even lack of the source information. The objective of this article is to find out the contents, first-hand source and editions of the primary literatures by doing textual research.As a result, the sources of quotations about the Hua Tuo's Prescription for Madam Pengcheng and Hua Tuo's Emergency Cases Prescriptions were discovered.Meanwhile, it was confirmed that Zhongzang Jing (, Classic of the Central Viscera) with 3 volumes and books of prescriptions during Song and Ming Dynasties were cited by the Compendium of Materia Medica. This solve the long term problem about Hua Tuo's citations, and might benefit further study about the citations of the Compendium of Materia Medica.

Ancient DNA technique was used to extract DNA from 5 species of Chinese traditional drugs Hippocampus. The 12S rRNA gene fragment and cytochrome b gene fragment were amplified from DNA extract using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) method. Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) analysis and DNA sequence analysis were performed. The RFLP analysis method can identify 2 species of Hippocampus. The molecular genetic markers produced by DNA sequence method can identify all 5 species of Hippocampus. This method will be valuable for the identification of other animal drugs.

An anti-inflammatory compound was purified and isolated from pilose antler of Cervus nippon Temminck by dialysis, gel filtration and ion-exchange chromatography techniques. HPLC and N-terminal amion acid analysis identified the compound as a homogeneous peptide. The peptide is composed of 68 amino acids and its molecular weight as determined by amino analysis, is about 7200.

The "scale-like projects" on the derma of 3 species of Hippocampi, H. kuda Bleerer, H. trimaculatus Leach and H. japonicus Kaup were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results showed that some characteristics such us size, shape and type of arrangement of the "scale-like projects" can be considered as the evidence for microanalysis. Image quantitative analysis of the "scale-like project" was carried out on 45 pieces of photograph using area, long diameter, short diameter and shape factor as parameters. No difference among the different parts of the same species was observed, but significant differences were found among the above 3 species.

The crude extract of earthworm which has a thrombolytic effect could significantly decrease the plasma fibrinogen content and euglobulin lysis time (P < 0.01). An enzymatic preparation, containing many fibrinolytic enzymes, was prepared from the crude extract by ammonium sulphate precipitation and DEAE-cellulose chromatography. When administered in rabbits, the enzymatic preparation had an effect in hemorheology improvement. The experiment shows the enzymatic preparation could obviously lower the aggregation of platelets, decrease the viscosity of whole blood and plasma as well as the index of erythrocyte rigidity significantly (P < 0.001). All these effects demonstrated its ability in promoting blood circulation to remove stasis.

The morphological characters and commercial idendification on medicinal materials named "Hailong" has been reported. The results of identification of 48 commercial samples indicated "Hailong" is adulterated with Halicampus koilomatodon, Trachyrhamphus serratus and Microphis boaja, Solenognathus güntheri besides three species accepted by Pharmacopoeia.

The morphological characters and commercial identification on Haima has been reported. The results of identification of 60 commercial samples indicated that all of Haima was the species accepted by Pharmacopoeia. Hippocampus kelloggi, H. histrix, H. kuda and H. trimaculatus were mainly used in Hainan, Guangdong and Fujian Province; H. japonicus was mainly used in Shandong and Liaoning Province; Imported Haima was H. histrix.

Cholic acid in man-made bezoar can be determined by the suggested first order derivative spectrometric method. The peak amplitude within 310-290 nm is independent of the other components and only varies linearly with cholic acid concentration. The method is simple and accurate with good reproducibility.

The contents of ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) and chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) in Chinese medicinal compound preparations have been determined by TLC-densitometry. The determination wavelength was 375nm and reference wavelength was 700nm. For UDCA the linear range was 3.0-15.0 micrograms and recovery was 97.2% (RSD = 1.2%), and for CDCA the linear range was 4.0-20.0 micrograms and recovery was 99.3% (RSD = 2.1%).

Twelve species of Hailong and Haima were analyzed by HPCE(high performance capillary electrophoresis) and significant differences among the species were found. The method is rapid, highly efficient and reproducible, thus providing experimental criteria for the qualitative identification of these two crude drugs.

We have compared the acute toxicity, sub-acute toxicity and in vitro and in vivo anti-tumor action of the rude drug, stir-fried with rice, and alkali-processed drugs of Mylabris phalerata before and after removing the head, feet and wings. The results indicate that the toxicity of the processed drugs is lower than that of the rude ones; the toxicity becomes higher without head, feet, and wings; and the alkali-processing method is better than stir-frying with rice recorded in the pharmacopeia.

This paper reports the colorimetric determination of total SO2 in Zirantong by the method of rosaniline hydrochlorid. Samper of processed Zirantong from the pharmacy have been analyzed and the quality specifications established. Optimum conditions for processing have been chosen and a procedure has been proposed for the recovery of the poisonous matter SO2 which is then transformed into a beneficial material.

Pilose antler peptide (PAP:MW:7200; amino acid residue:68) isolated from the antlers of Cervus nippon temminck 10 and 20 mg.kg-1 i.p. produced inhibitions towards acute and chronic inflammations in a dose-dependent manner. PAP reduced ascorbic acid and cholesterol contents in adrenal glands and decreased the serum hydrocortisone level of rats. The reduction of ascorbic acid and cholesterol contents were unaffected by the pretreatment of dexamethasone. PAP also showed an anti-inflammatory action on the swelling of carrageenan-induced hind paw in adrenalectomized rats. The results suggest that the anti-inflammatory effects of PAP do not depend absolutely on pituitary-adrenal system.
