BACKGROUND: Mastitis-metritis-agalactia (MMA) syndrome occurs in the first days post-partum and causes piglet losses mainly due to malnutrition. One possibility for prophylaxis of MMA is via homeopathy. In this veterinary study, the effectiveness of a prophylactic administration of homeopathic remedies for the prevention of the occurrence of MMA in swine was evaluated. METHODS: In a randomised and blinded study, 60 sows were examined. Sows were randomly distributed in two groups: the experimental group (CL/LL) received a prophylactic administration of the complex homeopathic remedies Caulophyllum Logoplex and Lachesis Logoplex, and the placebo group was administered a sodium chloride (NaCl) solution in the same injection scheme as the experimental group. Clinical signs of MMA, behavioural changes, as well as production parameters, were recorded beginning with the day of farrowing until 5 days post-partum. RESULTS: The treatment group showed no significant effect on the occurrence of MMA in sows (CL/LL: 56.67% MMA positive sows; NaCl: 53.53% MMA positive sows). Treatment group had also no significant effect on health parameters (vaginal discharge, raised rectal temperature, shortage of milk) or behavioural parameters (impaired feeding behaviour and impaired general condition). For the production parameter average weight gain, statistically significant effects in the treatment group were detected. CONCLUSIONS: Prophylaxis with the homeopathic remedies Caulophyllum Logoplex and Lachesis Logoplex showed neither an improvement in MMA prevention nor an improvement in health parameters or behavioural traits in the present herd of sows.

Studies and innovations on alternative feed additives, especially on homeopathic remedies have been highlighted in order to replace or reduce the use of antibiotics in pig production. This paper aimed to assess the addition of homeopathic products in pig diet and their effects on the growth performance, serum metabolites, nutrient and energy digestibility, carcass traits and meat quality. A total of 60 immunocastrated male pigs, weighing on average 30.91 ± 0.95 kg, were distributed in two treatments, 10 replicates and three animals/experimental unit. There was no effect (P≥0.05) of treatment on the growth performance and serum metabolites. The percentage of acid-insoluble ash recovered in the diet was greater (P≤0.01) in diets containing homeopathic products. The apparent digestible energy of diets containing homeopathic products was reduced (P≤0.01) in the growing phase and reduced (P≤0.01) the apparent digestibility coefficients of dry matter, crude protein, soluble neutral and acid detergent fibers, and gross energy in the growing and finishing phases. Pig that received diets with homeopathic products had higher (P≤0.05) amount of meat, percentage of meat and marbling. The use of homeopathic products in diets improves the percentage and quality of meat, as well as the marbling of the pig carcass, maintaining the performance.

BACKGROUND: Homeopathic products (HP) have been proposed for the prevention of disease and as a complementary dietary additive in pig farming, with resulting improved performance and quality of life of the animals and with benefits for food safety. The aim of this study was to assess the addition of HP to pig feed and its effects on growth performance, dietary protein utilization, nutrient digestibility, meat quality, and economic feasibility. METHODS: A total of 80 male pigs, body weight 32.8±2.3kg, were allocated in a randomized design, with two treatments of 10 replications and four animals per experimental unit. Treatments were composed of a control diet (CD) or CD+HP (Finalvitaplus+Figotonus, 1.1kg/ton feed of each product). The outcome measures used were growth performance (body weight gain) and feed efficiency (body weight gain per unit of feed consumed), efficiency of dietary protein utilization (blood urea nitrogen), nutrient digestibility (apparent digestibility coefficient and apparent nutrient digestibility), meat quality (including pH, temperature, color, liquid loss by cooking and thawing, intramuscular fat and meat tenderness), and economic feasibility (cost of the diets). RESULTS: There was no effect (p >0.05) of treatments on growth performance of the pigs, though the group that received HP showed an 8.93% greater feed efficiency than the control group (p=0.077). The animals in the control group had a 14.37% higher blood urea nitrogen concentration in the finishing I phase (70-100kg body weight) compared with those fed HP (p=0.028), indicating lower protein utilization in the controls. There was comparative improvement in digestibility coefficient and in nutrient digestibility in pigs fed HP in the growing-finishing phase (p <0.05). There was no differential effect of treatments on meat quality or economic feasibility (p >0.05). CONCLUSION: The addition of HP to the diet of growing-finishing pigs produced some improvement in their dietary protein utilization, nutrient digestibility and feed efficiency, though it did not affect their growth performance, meat quality or economic feasibility.

The pig bile powder, bovine bile powder, snake bile, sheep bile, goose bile powder, and bear bile powder were contained by the Chinese Pharmacopoeia. The bile power medicine has a long history in traditional Chinese medicine and definite effect. However, the medicine of bile powder(bile) are similar in morphology. Besides, many medicine lack specific microscopic identification characteristics and chemical characteristics. There is a risk of adulteration, especially when the fake medicine were mixed in authentic medicine, it is difficult to detection. The key to control the quality and ensures the clinical efficacy is the good or bad, true or false of the bile power medicine. The STR typing technology is a method that according to differential typing of PCR amplified lengths to compare and identify individual organisms. Based on the principle of STR typing, the easily, rapid DNA fingerprinting method to identify the bile power and adulteration was established.The original animal or bile powder of pigs, cattle, sheep, chickens, ducks, geese, snakes, bears, fish were collected, the 12 S-L1091/12 S-H1478 and 16 S-L3428/16 S-H3667 was obtained by sifted, the DNA fingerprinting of the bile power and adulteration was obtained by STR typing. Every species has different STR fingerprints, so different species can be identified. Besides, the fingerprints have both the authentic and fake's information, the adulteration of authentic and fake can be identified. Therefore, the method to identify the bile power and adulteration was achieved through the combination of two primers. The DNA fingerprinting method established in this study can also be used for other animal medicine.

To establish the fingerprints of biles of pig, cattle and sheep, HPLC was used with Acclaim™ RSLC 120 C18 column (3.0 mm×100 mm, 2.2 µm, 120 Å), the column temperature 35 °C, acetonitrile-1% perchloric acid as mobile phase, gradient elution, 0.5 mL·min⁻¹ flow rate, and detection wavelength at 200 nm. The fingerprint was generated by using Similarity Evaluation Software of Chromatographic Fingerprint of Chinese Medicine (2004A Edition). The fingerprint peaks were identified by reference substances and verified by ELSD and LC-MS/MS. Then, the biles of pig, cattle and sheep were detected to contain 14, 9 and 8 common fingerprint peaks respectively, and the similarity was greater than 0.92. To analyze each technical parameter, GHDCA in pig bile and TCA in cattle and sheep bile were selected as reference peak. The precision, repeatability and stability all meet the requirements of fingerprint establishment. The RSD of the relative retention time of the fingerprint peaks was less than 1.5%, and the RSD of the relative peak area was less than 5%. The fingerprint peaks in pig bile were THDCA, TCDCA, GHDCA and GCDCA, and TCA, TCDCA, GCA, GCDCA and GDCA in cattle and sheep bile. The main components of pig, cattle and sheep bile were conjugated bile acids, but there were significant differences in bile acids between pig bile and cattle, sheep biles. The HPLC method established in this paper is simple, rapid and reproducible, and could be applied to the identification and quality control of biles.

The porcine cardiac blood processed Salvia miltiorrhiza (PCB Danshen) is the characteristic processing of Menghe medical school and has been inherited for hundreds of years, commonly used in the treatment of brain ischemia-induced agitation, palpitation and phlegm confusing heart. Ancient and modern physicians believe that porcine cardiac blood is a guiding for heart nourishing drugs, which could enhance the effects of Salvia miltiorrhiza by nourishing and soothing the nerves. However, the material basis and processing mechanism of PCB Danshen are still unclear. This paper investigated the historical evolution and modern research of PCB Danshen, including the clinical application, the intention of clinic processing, the processing technology and recent research of PCB Danshen. In addition, the major problems and significance in research and development of PCB Danshen were further thought and prospected, hoping to provide basic data for material basis and processing mechanism of PCB Danshen, and provide effective support for inheriting and carrying forward the characteristic processing technology of Menghe medical school.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the effect of two different follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) preparations (diluted/dynamised and diluted) on the in vitro development and steroid production (estradiol, progesterone and testosterone) of isolated porcine preantral follicle after in vitro culture. METHODS: Secondary follicles were cultured in Alpha Minimum Essential Medium (α-MEM+) supplemented with grain ethanol (AL - 0.2%, v/v), diluted/dynamised FSH (rFSH 6cH - 0.05 fg/mL) or diluted-only FSH (1.5 ng/mL) for 4 days. Follicle development was evaluated on the basis of follicular growth, morphology and hormone production. RESULTS: The percentage of follicular integrity and extrusion were not affected by the treatments after culture. For all treatments, follicular diameter increased significantly from Day 0 to Day 4. On Day 2 of culture, the estradiol production was significantly higher in AL and diluted-only FSH treatments compared with diluted/dynamised FSH. However, diluted/dynamised FSH showed a significantly higher progesterone production on Day 2. Only on Day 4, the testosterone production was higher in the AL than diluted-only FSH treatments, but similar to diluted/dynamised FSH treatment. Except for diluted/dynamised FSH treatment, progesterone production increased (P < 0.05) from Day 2 to Day 4; only for AL treatment, a significant increase of testosterone production was observed during culture. CONCLUSION: Compared to control the diluted/dynamised FSH addition increased progesterone production but decreased the estradiol production after in vitro culture of isolated porcine preantral follicles. Taken together the results suggest that at least for progesterone production the mechanism of action of diluted/dynamised FSH differs from its vehicle.

OBJECTIVE: To compare baseline cardiovascular function in anesthetised pigs using either pancuronium or vecuronium as a neuromuscular blocker. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective, non-randomized comparison. ANIMALS: Norwegian Land Race pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus) weighing mean 42 ± SD 3 kg. METHODS: One hundred and sixteen animals from four different research protocols premedicated with identical doses of ketamine, diazepam, atropine and isoflurane, and anaesthetised with pentobarbital, fentanyl, midazolam and N(2)O were arranged into three uniform groups with respect to neuromuscular blocking agent: pancuronium bolus of 0.063 mg kg(-1) followed by 0.14 mg kg(-1) hour(-1) (n = 54), low-dose vecuronium 0.4 mg kg(-1) /0.2 mg kg(-1) hour(-1) (n = 29) and high-dose vecuronium 0.6 mg kg(-1) /0.3 mg kg(-1) hour(-1) (n = 33). RESULTS: The majority of cardiovascular parameters demonstrated no significant differences between groups. For heart rate, there was an overall group difference, p = 0.036. Dromotropy was low in the pancuronium group, with an increased normalised PR-interval compared to the high-dose vecuronium group, median 0.200 interquartile range (0.190, 0.215) versus 0.182 (0.166, 0.199), p < 0.05. Left ventricular compliance was increased in pancuronium-treated animals, demonstrated as a reduction in the nonlinear end-diastolic pressure volume relationship ß compared to both vecuronium groups, 0.021 (0.016, 0.025) versus 0.031 (0.025, 0.046) and 0.031 (0.022, 0.048), p < 0.05. The linear end-diastolic pressure volume relationship EDPVR(lin) was reduced as well in the pancuronium group, compared to the low-dose vecuronium group, 0.131 (0.116, 0.169) versus 0.181 (0.148, 0.247), p < 0.05. CONCLUSIONS: There are only minor haemodynamic differences when using pancuronium compared to vecuronium in the fentanyl-pentobarbital-midazolam-N(2)O anesthetised domestic pigs. Furthermore, increasing doses of vecuronium have minimal haemodynamic effects. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Experimental studies in pigs using either pancuronium or vecuronium as a neuromuscular blocking agent are comparable with regard to cardiac and haemodynamic performance.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Alternative therapies based on homeopathy can be effective in improving reproductive performance in intensive pig breeding. In this study, the effect of a homeopathic complex on reproductive performance of sows under intensive farming has been investigated. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Over period of three years, 186 sows were recruited from a farm where a large proportion of animals were suffering from prolonged weaning-to-oestrus intervals (WEI) and weaning-to-service intervals (WSI). Sows were allocated to two groups; once per month, one group was given a homeopathic complex (Borax 10 mK plus Lycopodium 10 mK), while the other group was given a hydro-alcoholic solution (placebo). The follow-up period started one week before the expected date of oestrus, continued for two pregnancies and ended after the weaning of the second farrowing. To evaluate reproductive performance, during the follow-up we collected data on quantitative parameters such as the average number of stillbirths, newborns, and repeat services per farrowing. Time-related data such as WEI, WSI, length of the two pregnancies and weaning periods were also collected to measure the length of the follow-up of each sow. Differences in quantitative parameters between the two groups were evaluated using parametric and non-parametric statistics. Time-related data were used to plot Kaplan-Meier curves and in Cox regression models to evaluate whether treated sows had a higher probability of experiencing a shorter follow-up in comparison to untreated sows. RESULTS: We did not found significant differences in the number of newborns, while the number of stillbirths was higher in the treatment group, even if the difference was slightly significant (p-value = 0.03). The number of repeat services was lower in the treatment group, and this difference was highly significant (p-value < 0.001). Results from the Cox regression models suggest that the end of the follow-up was reached by sows of the treatment group at about twice the rate of sows of the control group (model 2, Hazard Ratiotreatment = 2.27; 95%CI: 1.56-3.24).

The present study investigated the effect of adding allopathic doxorubicin (DOX 0.3 µg/mL), the vehicle of ultradiluted/dynamized doxorubicin (0.2 % ethanol), different dynamizations of ultradiluted/dynamized doxorubicin (DOX 6CH, DOX 12CH and DOX 30CH), both in the absence or presence of chemical stress induced by doxorubicin at 0.3 µg/mL on follicular survival and activation, antioxidant capacity of the medium, Catalase activity (CAT), production of reactive protein thiol, maintenance of type I and III collagen fibers and accumulation of lipofuscin in porcine ovarian tissue cultured in vitro for 48 hours. To do this, part of the ovarian tissue fragments was fixed for the uncultured control and the rest were cultured in: MEM (cultured control), DOX 0.3 µg/mL, Ethanol, DOX 6CH, DOX 12CH, DOX 30CH, DOX (0.3 µg/mL) + DOX 6CH, DOX (0.3 µg/mL) + DOX 12CH, DOX (0.3 µg/mL) + DOX 30CH treatments. The results showed that, in general, ultradiluted/dynamized doxorubicin (DOX 6CH, DOX 12CH and DOX 30CH) mitigated the toxic effect of allopathic doxorubicin (0.3 µg/mL) on the morphology of preantral follicles, the content of type I and III collagen fibers, and the production of lipofuscin in the tissue. However, only DOX (0.3 µg/mL) + DOX 6CH attenuated the oxidative stress induced by DOX (0.3 µg/mL), maintaining adequate CAT activity that was similar to the uncultured control. Additionally, when the three isolated ultradiluted/dynamized doxorubicin were considered, only DOX 12CH increased the reduced thiol levels compared to the uncultured control and MEM. In conclusion, supplementing the culture medium with ultradiluted/dynamized DOX (DOX 6CH, DOX 12CH and DOX 30CH) attenuated the toxicity induced by allopathic doxorubicin during the in vitro culture of pig preantral follicles enclosed in ovarian tissue.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify the dose of pancuronium required to obtain moderate neuromuscular blockade as monitored by acceleromyography (NMB(mod) : train-of-four count of ≤2) as a part of a balanced anaesthetic protocol in pigs used in cardiovascular research. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cross-sectional study. ANIMALS: Five pigs (median body weight: 60 (range 60-63) kg). METHODS: Anaesthesia was induced with xylazine, ketamine, atropine and midazolam and maintained with isoflurane in O(2) :air and fentanyl. Pigs received 0.1 mg kg(-1) pancuronium initial bolus to reach NMB(mod) followed by 0.1 mg kg(-1) hour(-1) constant rate infusion (CRI). During anaesthesia a twitch count of 3 or measureable T4/T1 ratio indicated unsatisfactory NMB. In this case additional 0.4 mg boluses of pancuronium were administered IV to effect in addition to the CRI. Descriptive statistical analysis was performed to express the median and range of the bolus and CRI dose of pancuronium in pigs. Cardiovascular parameters were analyzed at selected time points with Friedman Repeated Measures Analysis on Ranks. Spearman Rank test was used to evaluate correlation between parameters. RESULTS: Acceleromyographic monitoring of NMB is feasible in anaesthetized pigs. The median initial dose and rate of pancuronium required to achieve NMB(mod) were 0.10 (range 0.10-0.13) mg kg(-1) and 0.11 (range 0.10-0.21) mg kg(-1) hour(-1) , respectively. The administration rate showed considerable individual variation. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: These pancuronium doses can be used as a guideline to achieve NMB(mod) in pigs as part of a balanced anaesthetic protocol. Instrumental NMB monitoring is essential because of individual kinetic variations and compliance to monitoring guidelines.

The specialization of swine production and the market demand for pigs at different growth stages makes road transportation inevitable. However, road transportation usually causes a stress response in pigs. It is reported that homeopathic remedies supplementation could alleviate the stress response in pigs. This study investigated the effects of road transportation with or without homeopathic remedy (Convermax) supplementation on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, fecal microbiota, and serum cortisol and superoxide dismutase (SOD) concentrations in growing pigs. A total of 180 crossbred 49-d-old growing pigs [(Yorkshire × Landrace) × Duroc] with an initial body weight of 13.17 ± 0.02 kg were randomly allotted to 2 groups based on the initial body weight, containing 18 replicates with 5 pigs (mixed sex) in each. The pigs were fed dietary supplementation of a homeopathic remedy (Convermax) (0 or 200 mg/kg of feed, as-fed) for 35 d. On day 21, 45 pigs (70-d old; 25.25 ± 0.37 kg) were randomly selected from each group and assigned to either 2 hr of road transportation or no road transportation, resulting in a 2 × 2 factorial design. We found that road transportation led to an increase in the fecal coliform bacteria counts (P = 0.023) and serum cortisol concentration (P = 0.039) and a decrease in the serum SOD concentration (P < 0.001). However, supplementing homeopathic remedy (Convermax) to the diet of growing pigs increased gain to feed ratio (P = 0.042), apparent nitrogen digestibility (P = 0.019), and serum SOD concentration (P = 0.007), whereas decreased serum cortisol concentration (P = 0.022). In brief, road transportation induced stress response for growing pigs and increased harmful bacteria counts in their intestines. Dietary supplementation of homeopathic remedy (Convermax) alleviated stress response, improved apparent nitrogen digestibility, and increased gain to feed ratio. However, no significant interactive effects between road transportation with or without dietary homeopathic remedy (Convermax) levels were observed on the detected parameters in growing pigs.

The effect of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) stimulation on the activities of ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD), methoxyresorufin O-demethylase (MROD) and pentoxyresorufin O-depentylase (PROD) was studied in intact male pigs of purebred Landrace and Duroc breeds. Pigs were divided into four groups: two control groups of each breed, without hCG stimulation (n = 20 for each breed), and two experimental groups (n = 18 for each breed), with hCG stimulation (Pregnyl(®); N.V. Organon, Oss, The Netherlands, 30 IU/kg live weight). Pigs were slaughtered 3 days after hCG stimulation and enzyme activities were measured in hepatic microsomes using two approaches. First, only one substrate concentration was used for the analysis of each enzyme activity. We found that EROD activity was suppressed by hCG-stimulation in Landrace (p = 0.004), but not Duroc pigs (p > 0.05). Generally, EROD activity was higher in Duroc pigs compared with Landrace (p = 0.017). Methoxyresorufin O-demethylase and PROD activities did not differ between groups (p > 0.05). To further characterize EROD, MROD and PROD, enzyme kinetic studies were performed. V(max) values for EROD and MROD in both breeds were lower after hCG stimulation (p < 0.001 for Landrace and p < 0.05 for Duroc). Additionally, V(max) values for EROD significantly differed between Landrace and Duroc pigs being higher in Duroc pigs (p < 0.05). We concluded that both hCG stimulation and breed differences may be important in the regulation of EROD and MROD activities. This study provides the first data on the effect of hCG stimulation and thus high testicular steroids, on EROD, MROD and PROD activities. Further studies are needed to investigate individual CYP450 enzymes and their regulation in porcine tissues.

BACKGROUND: The use of antibiotics in the livestock sector is increasing to such an extent that it threatens negative consequences for human health, animal health and the environment. Homeopathy might be an alternative to antibiotics. It has therefore been tested in a randomised placebo-controlled trial to prevent Escherichia coli diarrhoea in neonatal piglets. METHOD: On a commercial pig farm 52 sows of different parities, in their last month of gestation, were treated twice a week with either the homeopathic agent Coli 30K or placebo. The 525 piglets born from these sows were scored for occurrence and duration of diarrhoea. RESULTS: Piglets of the homeopathic treated group had significantly less E. coli diarrhoea than piglets in the placebo group (P<.0001). Especially piglets from first parity sows gave a good response to treatment with Coli 30K. The diarrhoea seemed to be less severe in the homeopathically treated litters, there was less transmission and duration appeared shorter.

AIM: To evaluate the zootechnic performance and occurrence of diarrhea in piglets in the week post-weaning comparing supplementation with sucrose saline which contained or did not contain added homeopathic medicine. METHOD: Animals were randomly divided into three groups of 24 piglets each. The control group did not receive any treatment. Another group received sucrose saline, and the third group received sucrose saline with homeopathic medicine added, in the period of zero to seven days post-weaning. The homeopathic treatment consisted of Echinacea angustifolia, Avena sativa, Ignatia amara, Calcarea carbonica, all 6cH. Piglets were weighed daily for weight gain or loss, and observed for diarrhea and feed intake. RESULTS: Animals receiving sucrose saline alone and sucrose saline with homeopathy had less weight loss than control (p=0.017, p=0.0001 respectively). There was no statistical difference in relation to overall incidence of diarrhea or food consumption. These data suggest that the supplementation with sucrose saline with added homeopathic medicine in the first seven days post-weaning may be an useful option to reduce weight loss in weaned piglets.

A GnRH antagonist, Ac-D-p-Cl-Phe1,2, D-Trp3, D-Arg6, D-Ala10 GnRHb (Organon), was utilized to determine the effective dosage and duration to inhibit LH secretion in the pig. In a preliminary trial, barrows received either 10, 50, or 250 micrograms/kg BW of the GnRH antagonist. Secretion of LH was inhibited within 30 min for a duration of 12 h with the 100 micrograms/kg dose but persisted for greater than 48 h with the 250 micrograms/kg treatment. A second study determined effectiveness of the antagonist for inhibiting ovulation in cyclic gilts. At first detection of standing estrus, cyclic gilts were treated with either saline (control), 100, or 200 micrograms/kg BW of the GnRH antagonist (GnRH1). A second group of GnRH antagonist gilts received 200 micrograms/kg BW of the GnRH antagonist approximately 8 h prior to standing estrus (GnRH2). The GnRH1-treatment failed to inhibit or delay ovulation. Ovulation was inhibited and estrous cycles lengthened in GnRH2-treated gilts. These preliminary results suggest that ovulation in the gilt can be inhibited if the GnRH antagonist is administered prior to the LH surge.

CONTEXT: Due to the conditions of modern industrial pig fattening in intensive livestock farms, 24% to 69% of the animals become ill. The antibiotic metaphylaxis that is routinely administered leads to several problems in animals, human health, and the environment. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether a homeopathic metaphylaxis is effective and potentially useful for replacing antibiotic metaphylaxis. DESIGN: Animal subjects were divided into groups of 10 per pen, 2 pens sharing 1 trough. Twenty pigs were randomly assigned within a stall and were administered either antibiotics, homeopathy, or placebo. SETTING: A typical intensive livestock farm in Northern Germany. PARTICIPANTS: 1440 piglets. INTERVENTION: Homeopathic metaphylaxis is compared with placebo, the routine low-dose antibiotic metaphylaxis, and an antibiotic metaphylaxis in therapeutic dosage. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Incidence of diseases in general and of diseases of the respiratory tract. RESULTS: Homeopathic metaphylaxis is significantly effective compared with placebo and routine low-dose antibiotic metaphylaxis for incidence of disease and rate of disease of the respiratory tract among the animals studied. Only by increasing the dosage of antibiotics to a therapeutic level does antibiotic metaphylaxis surpass homeopathic metaphylaxis. CONCLUSIONS: An unacceptably high percentage of pigs in modern livestock management become ill, suffering mainly from diseases of the respiratory tract. The routine antibiotic dosage of metaphylaxis is too low to be effective. As a result, the problems of resistance and danger to human health and the environment are increasing. To confirm whether antibiotic metaphylaxis may be replaced by homeopathic metaphylaxis, this study should be repeated independently.

A detailed anaesthetic technique for baboons (Papio anubis) undergoing heterotopic abdominal cardiac xenotransplantation is described. Twenty-two baboons served as transplant recipients. Donors were either crossbred farm pigs (Sus scrofa) (n = 4) or transgenic pigs (Sus scroefa) (n = 18) expressing human complement regulatory proteins on the endothelium. Intra-operative management was complicated by the physiological consequences of infrarenal. abdominal aortic cross-clamping, in addition to the immunological sequelae related to cross-species transplantation. In choosing anaesthetics for this procedure, we considered the need for maximal cardiac stability throughout a long surgical procedure that required abdominal aortic cross-clamping to facilitate the implantation of an oversized porcine cardiac graft. Baboons received a balanced anaesthetic consisting of inhaled isoflurane in oxygen, intravenous fentanyl and intravenous pancuronium. The pharmacological techniques employed were found to be safe and reliable and were well tolerated by our recipients without any significant side-effects.

Investigation on famouse Chinese herbal medicine-Niu huang (calculus bovis) was carried out by all-spectrum X-ray diffraction analysis. Diffraction spectrums, as well as the specific symboling peaks of calculus bovis, artificial bezoar, bile ductstone, human gallstone and hog gallstone, were recognized. The error distribution curves of d-delta d for specific symboling peaks was also obtained by calculation under diffrent testing conditions, by which we identified successfully three samples provided by a pharmaceutical factory. This article shows that all-spectrum X-ray diffraction analysis can be used to identify Chinese traditional crude drug, and provides for morphological and microscopical study.
