n the landscape of health, the human body, in its natural state, reveals itself as an intricate unity, operating harmoniously to maintain dynamic balance. However, this homeostasis can be disrupted, leading to duality and disturbances that compromise vital stability. This article reflects on the homeopathic perspective, highlighting its unique approach compared to conventional medicine. Distinguishing itself by treating the individual as an integrated whole, homeopathy recognizes the transience of duality represented by diseases and emphasizes the importance of harmony between body and mind in the pursuit of homeostasis.Inspired by Hahnemann's ideas, homeopathy stands out for its holistic view, rejecting strict dualism and proposing interventions that go beyond symptom suppression. Anchored in the Law of Similars, it seeks substances that would reproduce the patient's symptoms in a healthy state, aiming for a profound cure and the restoration of the dynamic unity of the organism. Despite challenges, such as resistance and a lack of universally accepted research methods, homeopathy persists globally, suggesting unique value. This article encourages reflection on the homeopathic approach, emphasizing

RESUMO

STUDY DESIGN: Concept analysis. INTRODUCTION: This paper is a report on the analysis of the concept of tone in chiropractic. PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper is to clarify the concept of tone as originally understood by Daniel David Palmer from 1895 to 1914 and to monitor its evolution over time. METHODS: Data was sourced from Palmer's original work, published between 1895 and 1914. A literature search from 1980 to 2016 was also performed on the online databases CINHAL, PubMed and Scopus with key terms including 'tone', 'chiropractic', 'Palmer', 'vitalism', 'health', 'homeostasis', 'holism' and 'wellness'. Finally hand-searches were conducted through chiropractic books and professional literature from 1906 to 1980 for any references to 'tone'. Rodgers' evolutionary method of analysis was used to categorise the data in relation to the surrogates, attributes, references, antecedents and consequences of tone. RESULTS: A total of 49 references were found: five from publications by Palmer; three from the database searches, and; the remaining 41 from professional books, trade journals and websites. MAJOR CONCLUSIONS: There is no clear interpretation of tone in the contemporary chiropractic literature. Tone is closely aligned with functional neurology and can be understood as an interface between the metaphysical and the biomedical. Using the concept of tone as a foundation for practice could strengthen the identity of the chiropractic profession.

RESUMO

The ionic homeostasis is one of the most sensitive tests for the evaluation of functional state of a cell. The agents, which promote elevation of ionic homeostasis, as well as those, which suppress it, are well known. The goal of the present work was tracing the possibilities for altering ionic homeostasis into one or another direction, as a result of combined influence of some agents: ionizing radiation at a dose of 0.1 Gy, EMF with frequency of 45 Hz, 2.0 mT, in one case, and addition to this combination of the homeopathic remedy--stimulated phosphoric acid, at different dilutions. The following data have been obtained: combination of ionizing radiation of 0.1 Gy increased effect against the effect of its constituents, while addition of phosphoric acid at dilution of 10(-14) increased effect even further. In the other series of experiments, combination of ionizing radiation of 0.5 Gy and EMF was used in the same conditions; as a result, the sum effect decreased against its constituents, while addition of highly diluted (10(-200)) phosphoric acid practically arrested this effect. It is concluded that effect of a combined influence depends on a dose of the constituents.

RESUMO

Considerable number of the investigations are dedicated to the study of the influences of the various agents on ionic homeostasis of the cell. However, there are actually no works related to the impact on these indices of homeopathic preparations (HP). In the present work influence of HP - stimulated phosphoric acid (PA), at low dilutions (10(-14) and 10(-42)) and non-stimulated PA, at high dilutions (10(-200) and 10(-400)), on transmembrane transport of Na+, K+, Ca2+, and enzymes - Na,K-ATPase and Ca-ATPase - was investigated. Experiments were carried out by means of ion-selective electrodes, in order to measure concentration of ions in the Ringer solution. Results have shown that HP at low dilution always stimulated observed indices, while HP at high dilution - suppressed these indices. Therefore, driving force of HP increases with dilution, because number of hydrate complexes increases and so does velocity of information transmission, which is responsible for different effects.

RESUMO

Anamnesis and homeopathic repertorization are essential steps for collecting symptoms and selecting the suitable medicine to cure vegetables presenting pathologies or changes in homeostasis. Aims: The objective of this study was to carry out observation, anamnesis, and homeopathic repertorization of bell pepper plants and their cultivation environment and select thesimillimummedicine for the culture. Methods The study was performed at the Research and Extension Center in Agroecology of Ressacada Experimental Farm -Center of Agrarian Sciences, Federal University of Santa Catarina,Florianópolis, Brazil. The selection of symptoms was based on the characteristics of the diseases observed in the plants and modalized by evidenced characteristics in the environment. Symptomswere chosen by the mechanical method without hierarchization and a master symptom, and after their analogy with the symptoms described in the Homeopathic Materia Medica. Results The choice forCalcarea carbonicaandSulphurdrugs was based on the number of covered symptoms and the score obtained during the digital repertorization performed by the software HomeoPro®. The chosen dilution, 30 CH, was based on the miasmatic magnitude presented by the symptoms. Conclusion: The analogy of symptoms found in the agricultural organism with the symptoms described in the Homeopathic Materia Medica presents a promising path for choosing medicine to cure diseases in vegetables. The choice of the appropriate homeopathic medicine for crops must represent the symptomatic totality presented by the plant and by the environment in the homeopathic repertorization.

RESUMO

The use of drugs in high dilutions and the principle of similarity (or "similia") are two basic tenets of homeopathy. However, the plausibility of both is a subject of debate. Although several models have been proposed to explain the similia principle, it can be best understood and appreciated in the framework of complexity science and dynamic systems theory. This work applies a five-node Boolean network to show how self-organization and adaptation are relevant to rationalizing this traditional medical principle. Simulating the trajectories and attractors of the network system in the energy state-space provides a rudimentary and qualitative illustration of how targeted external perturbations can have pathological effects, leading to permanent, self-sustaining alterations. Similarly, changes that conversely enable the system to find its way back to the original state can induce therapeutic effects, by causing specific shifts in attractors when suitable conditions are satisfied. Extrapolating these mechanisms to homeopathy, we can envisage how major changes in the evolution of homeodynamic systems (and, eventually, healing of the entire body) can be achieved through carefully selected remedies that reproduce the whole symptom pattern of the ill state.

RESUMO

The scientific foundations of hormesis are now well established and include various biochemical and molecular criteria for testing the hormetic nature of chemicals and other modulators. In order to claim homeopathy as being hormetic, it is essential that, in addition to the hormetic biphasic dose response, homeopathic remedies should fulfill one or more molecular criteria. Since stress response pathways, such as heat shock response, antioxidative response, autophagic response and unfolded protein response, are integral components of the physiological hormesis, it is important that homeopathic drugs be tested for these pathways if these are to be considered as hormetins and to cause hormesis.

RESUMO

Stimulation or regulation therapies are old therapeutic procedures based on models reaching back to traditional medical faculties in ancient times and in the Middle Ages. Among this heterogeneous group are acupuncture, purgative procedures (especially the Aschner methods), autohemotherapy, fasting therapy, homeopathy, microbiological and physical therapies. The basic principle underlying all of these procedures is that stimulants applied in proper doses to the organism elicit counterregulation. The counterregulation stimulates 'self-healing processes' within the organism. The efficacy of stimulation therapies was originally deduced mostly from traditional explanatory models which have lost their relevance for modern medicine. However, it has been found in applications in dermatology that many of these stimulation therapies can lead to clinical improvement in selected indications and that modern explanatory models can be found for these effects. This presentation reports on exemplary applications of stimulation therapies in dermatology. Traditional and modern concepts of action are compared.

RESUMO

The notion of hormesis has undergone numerous modifications in the course of the 20th century. Because of its unfortunate association with homeopathy, hormesis did not gain acceptance among biomedical professionals. The lack of a plausible mechanism for its occurrence may have contributed much to the rejection of this concept. This treatise outlines the conceptual struggle for an understanding of the widespread occurrence of low dose effects that appear to be opposite to those caused by high doses as also seen in hormesis. An incomplete conceptualization of time as a fundamental variable of effects (in addition to dose) is identified as one of the major reasons why hermetic responses were not observed more frequently than was reported by Calabrese and Baldwin. The definition of hormesis as an (over)compensation response to an inhibitory signal lacks a designation for (over)compensation responses to stimulatory signals in the other direction. Hormoligosis, which was coined by Luckey for all low-dose stimulatory responses of toxins, is suggested as a suitable term for generalizing the latter types of effects. Both types of effects are recognized as originating in a homeostatic overcompensation response that optimizes the ability of an organism to meet challenges beyond the limits of normal (unexercised) adaptation. Thus, repeated biochemical/physiologic/immunological, etc. exercises like physical exercise make an organism more fit and hence both hormetic and hormoligotic effects will have life-prolonging consequences. A more complete generalization was developed by linking hormesis/hormoligosis with the vast literature on Selye's general adaptation syndrome to stress. According to this broader view, stress is just one type of homeostatic exercise making organisms more fit for future biochemical/physiological/immunological, etc.challenges. Therefore, both hormesis and hormoligosis are manifestations of two nonmutational evolutionary principles--homeostasis and optimization.

RESUMO

Neuromuscular blockers may affect cerebral blood flow (CBF) regulation in the newborn. We studied the effects of d-tubocurarine (0.1 mg.kg-1, n = 8), pancuronium (0.1 and 0.4 mg.kg-1, n = 6 and 7), and vecuronium (0.1 and 0.4 mg.kg-1, n = 6 and 7) on CBF measured over the same range of mean systemic blood pressure ([BP] 15-122 mmHg) in each group of newborn pigs; controls received normal saline (n = 7). The levels of BP during hypotension and hypertension were scaled at intervals of 5 +/- 1.6 mmHg and adjusted by inflating balloon-tipped catheters placed in the aorta. After saline, the low dose of pancuronium (0.1 mg.kg-1), and the two doses of vecuronium, CBF was constant over the BP range of 50-90 mmHg (r = -0.07-0.35, P greater than 0.20) but varied directly with BP beyond this range (tau = 0.38 - 0.60, P less than 0.05). In contrast, in pigs treated with d-tubocurarine and high-dose pancuronium, CBF remained constant from 35 to 122 mmHg of BP (r = 0.14 - 0.37, P greater than 0.10) and changed minimally (4-12%) with BP greater than 105 mmHg compared to the other groups (41-59%, P less than 0.01). When BP was reduced below 30 mmHg, CBF also decreased less (20-38%) in animals treated with d-tubocurarine and high dose-pancuronium than after the other treatments (58-67%, P less than 0.05).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

RESUMO

This two-part paper offers a novel, experimentally derived explanation of how homoeopathic remedies may work. It expands, at the kind suggestion of the Editor of the British Homoeopathic Journal, on a short article which I submitted earlier on the same subject to the Newsletter of the Homoeopathic Association of Ireland. The first part of the paper presents evidence of a homeostatic mechanism in a dog's vein which provides a physiological basis for the Law of Similars. The second part offers evidence that the same mechanism operates throughout the body and that homoeopathic physicians already make empirical use of it. Part 1 of the paper has three sections. The first explains what the Law of Similars is and what it implies. It suggests the reasons why, I believe, main-line pharmacologists and allopathic physicians deny its plausibility. It describes the first evidence I obtained of a physiological process which would allow the Law of Similars to operate in the lateral saphenous vein of the dog. The second section describes experiments in which noradrenaline, isoprenaline and acetylcholine were used to both constrict and dilate the saphenous vein by direct action on its smooth muscle. Section three deals with the vasa vasorum which are a crucial element in vascular homeostasis and in the operation of the Law of Similars in the dog's vein. It describes some of the special features which characterize the action of drugs released through the vasa vasorum. Section four in part 2 shows that the homeostatic mechanism which is present in the vein operates also in the circulatory system in general and the coronary vessels in particular. It offers evidence which suggests that the mechanism operates also in the kidney and the brain and in the whole body. Section five examines the nature of homoeopathy in the light of the new knowledge. It suggests how homoeopathy works and how the homoeopathic physician can maximize the effectiveness of his prescribed drugs. It shows how the Law of Similars is implicated in the aetiology of many common degenerative diseases and in ageing. It closes with a look at environmental pollution and shows why standard testing techniques fail to detect the true extent of this problem
