ABSTRACT
Cancer Incidence in Five Continents (CI5), a longstanding collaboration between the International Agency for Research on Cancer and the International Association of Cancer Registries, serves as a unique source of cancer incidence data from high-quality population-based cancer registries around the world. The recent publication of Volume X comprises cancer incidence data from 290 registries covering 424 populations in 68 countries for the registration period 2003-2007. In this article, we assess the status of population-based cancer registries worldwide, describe the techniques used in CI5 to evaluate their quality and highlight the notable variation in the incidence rates of selected cancers contained within Volume X of CI5. We also discuss the Global Initiative for Cancer Registry Development as an international partnership that aims to reduce the disparities in availability of cancer incidence data for cancer control action, particularly in economically transitioning countries, already experiencing a rapid rise in the number of cancer patients annually.

Five cases of calcification of the breast due to filariasis in Congolese women are reported. The cases were discovered during mammographies carried out for suspect carcinoma (4 cases) and benign tumor (1 case). The geographic origin of the patients, a past history of subconjunctival filarial migration in 2 individuals, the bilateral localization, and, above all, the radiographic appearance and size of the calcifications, suggested that the images were due to Loa loa.

In this retrospective study over six years the authors report 65 malignant solid tumours of the children under the age of 15 years old. The average age was 7.9 years with a peak of frequency between 5 and 9 years. There was a male prevalence with a sex-ratio of 1.3. The most frequent histological types were: lymphoma of Burkitt (52%), retinoblastoma (20%), nephroblastoma (9%) and malignant tumours of the soft tissues (6%). The malignant solid tumours of the child are relatively rare and histologically very diversified.

In 42 months, 175 patients (171 women and 4 men) were followed for mammary tumor in the Department of Medicine and Cancerology of l'Hopital General of Brazzaville. Among them, 63 files were retained for the study, corresponding to women under the age of 30. The study of these cases enabled the authors to establish the relatively important frequency of large tumors (larger than 5 cm), and the similarity of the general aspects of the pathology of mammary tumors, as compared to european studies.
