ABSTRACT

Social inequality refers to the inequitable distribution of social prosperity including the resource of health. The relationship between social inequality and mental health can be established by means of indicators of social inequality throughout all age groups in Germany. There are social gradients of mental health on the population level, i.e. the linear relationship between social classes or status and state of health. Fundamental determinants of health disparity are cultural, social, political, and geographical conditions, which interact with the genetic make-up and epigenetic processes. These determinants also influence the management of developmental tasks during the life course and are of utmost importance for the development of mental disorders. The maladaptation to chronic stress is at the core of health disparity. Interventions at the individual behavioral level should comprise the development of stress management and coping strategies.

ABSTRACT

The main aim of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of multidisciplinary guidelines in promoting the mobility of people with dementia in 20 German nursing homes. The study was based on a semi-experimental design [pre-post design with intervention (IG) and control group]. The statistical analyses revealed a significantly slower decline of the ability to walk among the residents of the IG than among the controls. With regard to other outcome measures the results were less clear.

ABSTRACT

A simple explanation is given for the low-temperature density minimum of water confined within cylindrical pores of ordered nanoporous materials of different pore size. The experimental evidence is based on combined data from in-situ small-angle scattering of X-rays (SAXS) and neutrons (SANS), corroborated by additional wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS). The combined scattering data cannot be described by a homogeneous density distribution of water within the pores, as was originally suggested from SANS data alone. A two-step density model reveals a wall layer covering approximately two layers of water molecules with higher density than the residual core water in the central part of the pores. The temperature-induced changes of the scattering signal from both X-rays and neutrons are consistent with a minimum of the average water density. We show that the temperature at which this minimum occurs depends monotonically on the pore size. Therefore we attribute this minimum to a liquid-solid transition of water influenced by confinement. For water confined in the smallest pores of only 2 nm in diameter, the density minimum is explained in terms of a structural transition of the surface water layer closest to the hydrophilic pore walls.

ABSTRACT

Optoelectronic devices based on metal halide perovskites continue to show a improved performance, and solution-based coating techniques pave the way for large-area applications. However, not all parameters influencing the thin film formation process of metal halide perovskites are identified and entirely rationalised over their full compositional range, thus hampering optimised thin film fabrication. Furthermore, while the perovskite deposition via spin-coating and annealing is an easily accessible technique, more profound insights into the chemical formation process are still lacking. Varying the precursor solution concentration is commonly used to vary the resulting thin film thickness. This study shows that varying the precursor solution concentration also affects the thin film morphology and optoelectronic quality. Hence, we herein investigate the influence of the precursor solution concentration on the formation process of a pure bromide-based triple cation perovskite (Cs0.05MA0.10FA0.85PbBr3) by fiber-based optical in situ measurement. During the spin-coating process, in situ UV-vis and PL measurements reveal formation kinetics are strongly dependent on the concentration. Furthermore, we identify delayed nucleation and retarded growth kinetics for more concentrated precursor solutions. In addition, we quantify the shifting chemical equilibrium of colloidal pre-coordination in the precursor solution depending on concentration. Namely, colloids are pre-organised to a higher degree and higher-coordination lead-bromide complexes tend to form in more concentrated precursor solutions. Thus, the modified solution chemistry rationalises retarded perovskite formation kinetics and highlights the precursor concentration as an influential and optimisable parameter for solution-based thin film deposition.

ABSTRACT

The in situ formation of gold nanoparticles in soda lime silicate glass under constant x-ray irradiation is compared with the ex situ formation in preirradiated glasses. The ASAXS measurements confirm that pure Au particles are formed. The comparison shows that the number of particles nucleated under irradiation is about an order of magnitude higher than of those nucleated with preirradiation. The radius, R, remains slightly below 1 nm under in situ conditions and the Ostwald ripening stage is slowed down. Under ex situ conditions Ostwald ripening is clearly observed and R grows up to 3 nm.

ABSTRACT

Small changes in Pacific temperature gradients connected with the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) influence the Walker Circulation and are related to global climate anomalies. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to develop robust indices of their past behavior. Here, we reconstruct the difference in sea surface temperature between the west and central Pacific during ENSO, coined the West Pacific Gradient (WPG), based on the Last Millennium Paleo Hydrodynamics Data Assimilation. We show that the WPG tracks ENSO variability and strongly co-varies with the zonal gradient in Pacific sea surface temperature. We demonstrate that the WPG strength is related to significant atmospheric circulation and precipitation anomalies during historical El Niño and La Niña events by magnifying or weakening droughts and pluvials across the Indo-Pacific. We show that an extreme negative WPG coupled to a strong zonal Pacific temperature gradient is associated with enhanced megadroughts in North America between 1400 CE and the late sixteenth century. The twentieth century stands out in showing the most extreme swings between positive and negative WPG conditions over the past Millennium. We conclude that the WPG is a robust index together with ENSO indices to reveal past changes in Pacific zonal sea surface temperature gradient variability.

ABSTRACT

Nanosized metal particles of various configurations embedded in surface regions of glass have great potential as nonlinear optical materials for photonic devices. We have prepared Ag/Au nanoparticles in core-shell configuration in soda-lime silicate glass by double-ion implantation and investigated their structural characteristics by anomalous small-angle x-ray scattering (ASAXS) and transmission electron microscopy. Measurements at x-ray energies slightly below the Au L(3) edge indicate the formation of bimetallic Ag/Au shells in some of the nanoparticles for high-dose ion implantation. An element-specific analysis of the ASAXS results allowed us not only to validate and quantify the core-shell structure, but simultaneously also the composition of the shells. Hollow nanoparticles were found for an Au-Ag implantation sequence, whereas an Ag-Au sequence generates a diluted core composition. The shift of the maximum position of optical absorption of the samples due to surface plasmon resonance of bimetallic nanoparticles, as monitored by optical spectroscopy, revealed the considerable influence of the respective particle configuration.

ABSTRACT

Increasing intensity of marine heatwaves has caused widespread mass coral bleaching events, threatening the integrity and functional diversity of coral reefs. Here we demonstrate the role of inter-ocean coupling in amplifying thermal stress on reefs in the poorly studied southeast Indian Ocean (SEIO), through a robust 215-year (1795-2010) geochemical coral proxy sea surface temperature (SST) record. We show that marine heatwaves affecting the SEIO are linked to the behaviour of the Western Pacific Warm Pool on decadal to centennial timescales, and are most pronounced when an anomalously strong zonal SST gradient between the western and central Pacific co-occurs with strong La Niña's. This SST gradient forces large-scale changes in heat flux that exacerbate SEIO heatwaves. Better understanding of the zonal SST gradient in the Western Pacific is expected to improve projections of the frequency of extreme SEIO heatwaves and their ecological impacts on the important coral reef ecosystems off Western Australia.

ABSTRACT

Concentrated surfactant stabilized cobalt ferrofluids up to 6 vol % Co have been studied by small-angle scattering using polarized neutrons and synchrotron x rays. The combination of these techniques allowed the magnetic and nuclear form factors to be reliably separated from the structure factors. Above 1 vol % Co, inter particle interactions are induced by an applied external magnetic field that gives rise to pseudocrystalline ordering of cobalt core-shell particles. Particles are arranged in hexagonal planes, with the magnetic moments aligned parallel to the [110] direction. Two types of equivalent textures were found to be present simultaneously, corresponding to a stacking of the hexagonal planes in horizontal and vertical direction. The in-plane nearest-neighbor distance is almost independent of the concentration and temperatures, whereas the distance between the neighboring planes, c, strongly varies from sample to sample. In addition, segments of chains of particles with parallel moments are aligned along the magnetic field and frozen-in when the carrier liquid is solidified. The field induced pseudocrystalline lamellar hexagonal particle arrangement, observed experimentally in colloidal magnetic liquids, confirms predictions from molecular-dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations.

ABSTRACT

Self-assembly of gold nanoparticles was obtained by sputter deposition on DES. SAXS and TEM investigations reveal the formation of spherical nanoparticles with a mean diameter of 5 ± 0.5 nm. For extended sputtering times, the number density of AuNPs increases linearly and a very pronounced 1st and 2nd shell ordering is observed.

ABSTRACT

A 17-year-old male with burns to 8% of his total body surface area was treated for 10 days with Acticoat(®), a nanocrystalline silver dressing. The burns, which were on his back and shoulder, healed without infection. However, a skin discoloration in the wound area and the adjacent uninjured skin appeared in the first days of treatment. The staining remained visible even after the treatment had ended and disappeared approximately three years later. Despite the outstanding antimicrobial properties, possible side effects of silver nanocrystalline dressings should be kept in mind.


Un garçon de 17 ans avec des brûlures sur 8% de la surface corporelle totale a été traité avec Acticoat®, un pansement d'argent nanocristallin, pendant 10 jours. Les brûlures, qui étaient sur son dos et une épaule, ont guéri sans infections. Cependant, une décoloration de la peau dans la zone de la plaie et la peau indemne adjacente est apparue dans les premiers jours de traitement. La coloration est restée visible même après le fin du traitement et elle a disparu environ trois ans plus tard. Malgré ses propriétés antimicrobiennes importantes, il faut considérer les effets secondaires possibles de pansements d'argent nanocristallins.
