ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: In clinical orthodontic treatment, chronic respiratory disturbance or mouth breathing has been concerned symptoms and screening criteria. In this study, to analyze the relation between nasal obstruction and taste sensing, a unilateral nasal obstruction model was performed to investigate the taste papillae and taste buds in rats. METHODS: Fourteen 6-day-old male Wistar rats were randomly divided into control and experimental groups (n = 7 each). The experimental group underwent unilateral nasal obstruction at 8 days of age. The rats were euthanized at 9-week-old. The morphology of the circumvallate papillae and taste buds were identified by immunohistochemical methods. The fungiform papillae were visualized with 1% methylene blue and sectioned for taste bud observation. RESULTS: Some defects in the gustatory epithelium were observed after unilateral nasal obstruction. Rats in the experimental group had significantly fewer fungiform papillae and smaller volumes of taste bud. In circumvallate papillae, smaller total taste bud area was found in experiment group. CONCLUSION: Findings in the present study suggest that nasal obstruction might have significant influences on the gustatory function via morphologic change in the taste papillae and taste buds in tongue area.

ABSTRACT

We report the successful treatment of a woman aged 25 years 3 months with bilateral cleft lip and palate. She had a protruded premaxilla, collapsed posterior segments, wide alveolar defects with oronasal fistulae, a congenital missing tooth, and severe facial asymmetry with a transverse occlusal cant. The comprehensive treatment approach included (1) premaxillary osteotomy combined with alveolar bone grafting to reposition the premaxilla and minimize the wide alveolar defects, (2) autotransplantation of a tooth with complete root formation to the grafted bone region to restore the missing tooth without a prosthesis such as a dental implant or bridge, and (3) 2-jaw surgery to improve facial asymmetry. The premaxillary osteotomy was managed orthodontically, in combination with bone grafting. The results suggest that surgical orthodontic treatment with tooth autotransplantation might be useful to improve the occlusion and facial esthetics without prosthetics.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Proper occlusion facilitates food intake and gustatory function is indispensable for the enjoyment of food. Although an interaction between dentoalveolar and gustatory afferent neurons has been suggested by previous studies, the relationship between occlusion and gustation remains unclear. This study investigated the effect of upper molar extraction which diminished occlusal support on peripheral gustatory receptors in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-six 7-week-old male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to either the experimental or the control group. All maxillary molars were extracted from rats in the experimental group under anesthesia, while a sham operation was conducted in the control group. The rats were euthanized 7, 14 or 28 days after the procedure. The morphology of the circumvallate papillae and taste buds using immunohistochemical methods and the fungiform papillae were visualized with 1% methylene blue. RESULTS: Defects in the gustatory epithelium were observed after maxillary molar extraction. Rats in the experimental group had significantly fewer fungiform papillae, narrower circumvallate papillae, shallower trench depth, smaller trench area, smaller taste bud area, lower ratios of taste bud area to trench area and fewer taste buds than those in the control group. CONCLUSIONS: The findings indicate that molar extraction would affect peripheral gustatory receptors. This is the first study to characterize changes in rat fungiform and circumvallate papillae after maxillary molar extraction. This study suggests a possible synergic relationship between dentoalveolar perception and gustatory function, which has clinical implications that occlusion is closely correlated with gustatory perception.

ABSTRACT

The rise in the number of hemodialysis (HD) patients underscores the importance of culturally competent HD nurses. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of a situated simulation program on HD nurses' cultural competence. This was a quasi-experimental pilot study with a total of 40 participants who met the inclusion criteria from an HD center in northern Taiwan. Participants took part in two separate 3 h education programs. The first program focused on the basic concepts of cultural competence, while the second program involved situated simulations utilizing the Gather-Analyze-Summarize (GAS) method of debriefing. The generalized estimating equations (GEEs) were employed to estimate the intervention effect. The baseline scores were divided into low-score and high-score groups using the median score for subgroup analysis. The subgroup analysis revealed that a significant group-time interaction was identified regarding cultural competence and subscale, verifying the situated simulation's immediate effect. In this study, an integration of the GAS method of debriefing and situated simulation teaching was implemented. The results showed that this approach empowered HD nurses with the ability to foster positive attitudes and demonstrate professional expertise in an organized manner when facing similar clinical scenarios in the future.

The tuberous root of Liriope spicata var. prolifera (TRLS; Liliaceae family) is valued for the ability to promote glucose homeostasis, and it may therefore be utilized as an adjuvant therapy in the control of diabetic complications. The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of an aqueous ethanol extract from TRLS (TRLS-ext) (100 or 200 mg kg(-1) per day for eight weeks) on rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetic nephropathy (DN). Renal dysfunction in diabetic rats was ameliorated by TRLS-ext as evidenced by reduced creatinine clearance, as well as increased blood urea nitrogen and proteinuria. Treatment with TRLS-ext was found to markedly improve histological architecture in the diabetic kidney. Hyperglycemia induced degradation of inhibitory kappa B and reduced nuclear factor kappa B activation, leading to increased infiltration of macrophages and increased levels of proinflammatory cytokines, including interleukin-1 and tumor necrosis factor- α . All of the above abnormalities were reversed by TRLS-ext treatment, which also decreased the expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, and fibronectin in the diabetic kidneys. These findings provide a perspective on the renoprotective effects of TRLS-ext in DN.
