ABSTRACT

On account of the reported anticancer of pyrimidine and condensed pyrimidine, a new pyrimido [3,2-b]-1,2,4,5-tetrazine 3a , b , 5c , d , 6, 9, pyrimido [3,2-b]-1,2,4-triazine 10, 11, pyrimido [3,2-b]-1,2,4-triazole 12 and pyrimidine derivatives 1,2a , b , 4c , d , 8, 13, 14, 15 and 16 were synthesized through different chemical reactions. Structures of all synthesized compounds were supported by spectral and elemental analyses. The obtained compounds were evaluated for their in vitro antitumor activity against human liver cancer cell line (HEPG2).

ABSTRACT

New Pd(II) and Pt(IV) triazine complexes [Pt3(L 1 )2(Cl)9(H2O)3].3Cl.3H2O (1), [Pt3(L 2 )2(Cl)9(H2O)3].3Cl (2), [Pt3(L 3 )2(Cl)9(H2O)3].3Cl (3), [Pt2(L 4 )2(Cl)6(H2O)2] .2Cl.4H2O (4), [Pd3(L 1 )2(H2O)6] .3Cl2 (5), [Pd3(L 2 )2(H2O)6].3Cl2 (6), [Pd3(L 3 )2(H2O)6].3Cl2 (7), and [Pd2(L 4 )2(H2O)4].2Cl2 (8) were synthesized and well characterized using elemental analyses, molar conductance, IR, UV-Vis, magnetic susceptibility, 1H, 13C-NMR spectra, and thermal analyses. These analyses deduced that the L 1 , L 2 , and L 3 ligands act as tridentate forming octahedral geometry with Pt(IV) metal ions and square planar geometry in case of Pd(II) complexes but the L 4 ligand acts as bidentate chelate. The molar conductance values refer to the fact that all the prepared s-triazine complexes have electrolyte properties which are investigated in DMSO solvent. Surface morphology behaviors of prepared complexes have been scanned using TEM. The crystalline behavior of triazine complexes has been checked based on X-ray powder diffraction patterns. The antimicrobial activity of the free ligands and their platinum(IV) and palladium(II) complexes against the species Staphylococcus aureus (G+), Escherichia coli (G-), Aspergillus flavus, and Candida albicans has been carried out and compared with the standard one. The coordination of ligands towards metal ions makes them stronger bacteriostatic agents, thus inhibiting the growth of bacteria and fungi more than the free ligands. The cytotoxic assessment IC50 of the free ligands and its platinum(IV) complexes in vitro against human colon and lung cancer cell lines introduced a promising efficiency.

ABSTRACT

AIM: The results of a study designed to investigate the predictive value of preoperative anterior chamber depth (ACD) and intraocular pressure (IOP) are reported. The relation between these factors and their effect on the reduction in IOP following phacoemulsification cataract surgery was also studied. METHODS: The ACD and IOP were prospectively measured in 103 non-glaucomatous eyes of 103 patients who underwent uneventful phacoemulsification and posterior chamber intraocular lens (PCIOL) implantation. Other data which were recorded included best corrected visual acuity, axial length, lens thickness, and severity of lens opacity. RESULTS: The ACD increased by a mean (SD) of 1.10 (0.44) mm (p<0.00001) and this increase was significantly and inversely related to preoperative ACD (r(2) = 68%; p<0.01). IOP dropped by a mean of 2.55 (1.78) mm Hg following cataract surgery (p<0.0001), and this reduction was significantly and positively related to preoperative IOP (r(2) = 56%; p<0.01), and significantly and inversely related to preoperative ACD (r(2) = 21%; p<0.01). A novel ratio, the pressure to depth (PD) ratio (preoperative IOP/preoperative ACD), was found to be significantly and positively related to the surgically induced reduction in IOP (r(2) = 73%; p<0.01), and IOP was reduced by > or =4 mm Hg in all patients with a PD ratio >7. CONCLUSION: The reduction in IOP following cataract surgery was found to be positively related to preoperative IOP, and inversely related to preoperative ACD. Furthermore, these results indicate that a novel index, the PD ratio, is strongly predictive for IOP reduction following cataract extraction, and may prove useful in surgical decision making.

ABSTRACT

Hepatitis C and B viruses are associated with hepatocellular carcinoma in Europe, Asia and Southern Africa. A study of hepatitis C and hepatitis B virus infection was carried out on 70 patients with HCC, from the National Cancer Institute, Cairo University. Sera from patients were tested for anti-HCV and HBsAg markers. Twenty patients (30%) were anti HCV positive alone, 15 (21.4%) were HBsAg positive alone, 28 (40%) were positive for both anti-HCV and HBsAg and the remaining 6 patients (8.6%) were negative for the two markers. The total positivity for anti-HCV and for HBsAg in these patients was 70% and 61.4% respectively. The comparable figures in a recent study on 90 blood donors from Egypt, were 24.4% for anti-HCV and 4.4% for HBSAg. These data suggest a possible link between HCV and HBV infection and the development of hepatocellular carcinoma in Egypt, as has been found elsewhere in the world.

ABSTRACT

To assess the hepatitis B virus (HBV) serologic status of hospital health care personnel in Lome. From June 1 to August 31, 2007, 100 workers vaccinated against HBV and 50 unvaccinated workers participated in this comparative cross-sectional study. The data studied were: age, sex, vaccination status, history of accidental exposure to blood, and enzyme-linked immunoassay results for HBs antigen (Ag), total anti-HBc antibodies (Ab), and anti-HBs Ab. Vaccinated subjects had a mean age of 33.2 ± 8.2 years and unvaccinated subjects of 35.2 ± 9.6 years; their respective sex ratios (M:W) were 2:1 and 3:1. Protective levels (>10 IU/L) of anti-HBs Ab were found in 78% (n = 78) of vaccinated subjects compared with 44% (n = 22) of those unvaccinated. HBs Ag was found in 36% (n = 36) of vaccinated and 56% (n = 28) of unvaccinated subjects. Of subjects previously accidentally exposed to blood, 67% (n = 35) had HBs Ag compared with 30% (n = 29) of those subjects without such exposure. This study has proved the high prevalence of HBs Ag carrier status among health care workers in Lome and confirms the importance of vaccination against HBV.

ABSTRACT

We aim to describe a case of central retinal vein occlusion associated with this is a case report of a 45-year-old patient who was admitted for management of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). He developed left central retinal vein occlusion three months later. The retinal vein occlusion resolved gradually as his TTP started to respond to medical treatment but significant macular edema persisted. Focal argon laser treatment resulted in complete resolution of the macular edema.
