ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Puberty is a biologically and psychologically unstable period, and pubertal changes differ by sex. However, most previous studies on pubertal timing and suicide have focused on girls. This study investigated the association between early spermarche and suicide attempts in boys. METHODS: We analyzed a nationally representative sample of Korean adolescents (The Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey, KYRBS) that included approximately 35,000 boys annually from 2011 to 2015. Pubertal timing in boys was defined by spermarche. Complex sampling logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate the odds ratios (ORs) for suicide attempts between the early and average spermarche groups. RESULTS: The ORs for suicide attempts in boys with early spermarche were significantly higher than those in boys with average spermarche after adjustment for age, perceived stress, depressive symptoms, and suicidal ideation. The ORs from 2011 to 2015 were as follows: 1.782 (P < 0.001), 1.490 (P = 0.002), 1.693 (P < 0.001), 1.541 (P = 0.001), and 1.393 (1.024-1.895; P = 0.035), respectively. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that early pubertal timing is a risk factor for suicide attempts in Korean boys after adjustment for depressive symptoms, perceived stress, and suicidal ideation, which have been previously reported as risk factors for suicide attempts. Therefore, careful attention should be paid to the prevention of suicide in boys who experience early spermarche in Korea.

ABSTRACT

A tunnel recombination junction (TRJ) layer for hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H)/ Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) tandem solar cells is investigated. An Al-doped zinc oxide (AZO) thin film is applied to the TRJ, and the influence of electron beam (e-beam) irradiation on defects along the TRJ is investigated. The AZO thin films are prepared using radio frequency (RF) sputtering and the e-beam is irradiated at 200 W RF power and 2 keV DC power for 5 min. In the e-beam irradiated AZO thin film, the number of oxygen vacancies and Zn interstitials increases, which in turn strengthens the effect of defect-enhanced tunnel recombination.

ABSTRACT

A crystalline silicon (c-Si) local-back-contact (LBC) solar cell for which a laser-condition-optimized surface-recombination velocity (SRV), a contact resistance (Rc), and local back surface fields (LBSFs) were utilized is reported. The effect of the laser condition on the rear-side electrical properties of the laser-fired LBC solar cell was studied. The Nd:YAG-laser (1064-nm wavelength) power and frequency were varied to obtain LBSF values with a lower contact resistance. A 10-kHz laser power of 44 mW resulted in an Rc of 0.125 ohms with an LBSF thickness of 2.09 µm and a higher open-circuit voltage (VOC) of 642 mV.

ABSTRACT

Studying gene expression profile in a single cancer cell is important because multiple genes are associated with cancer development. Quantum dots (QDs) have been utilized as biological probes for imaging and detection. QDs display specific optical and electrical properties that depend on their size that can be applied for imaging and sensing applications. In this study, simultaneous imaging of the cancer biomarkers, tenascin-C and nucleolin, was performed using two types of aptamer-conjugated QDs. The simultaneous imaging of these two different cancer markers in three cancer cell lines was reliable and cell line-specific. Current requirements for cancer imaging technologies include the need for simple preparation methods and the ability to detect multiple cancer biomarkers and evaluate their intracellular localizations. The method employed in this study is a feasible solution to these requirements.

BACKGROUND: Transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) is associated with skin sensitivity and mainly activated by capsaicin and heat. Interestingly, troxerutin can inhibit TRPV1 activation. However, its efficacy in reducing skin sensitivity remains undetermined. AIMS: We evaluated the efficacy of troxerutin in alleviating skin sensitivity using clinical tests and in vitro experiments. METHODS: For the in vitro experiment, HaCaT keratinocytes were pretreated with different concentrations of troxerutin, followed by incubation with 50 µM capsaicin for 1, 24, or 48 h. The gene and protein expressions of four inflammatory cytokines involved in skin irritation were determined. Among 35 Korean women with sensitive skin recruited for the clinical trial, 13 were involved in assessing the immediate soothing effects of 0.1% and 0.0095% troxerutin following capsaicin irritation, whereas 22 participated in evaluating the preventive soothing effect of 10% and 1% troxerutin over 4 weeks against capsaicin- and heat-induced irritation. We evaluated the soothing rate using skin redness, visual analog scale, and high temperature sensitive index as evaluation indices. RESULTS: Troxerutin inhibited the mRNA and protein expressions of cytokines in capsaicin-treated keratinocytes. In the clinical study, 0.1% and 0.0095% troxerutin promptly alleviated capsaicin-induced skin redness, whereas 10% troxerutin notably decreased both the visual analog scale and high temperature sensitive index for capsaicin- and heat-related irritation. However, 1% troxerutin was only effective in reducing the visual analog scale in response to capsaicin irritation. CONCLUSIONS: Troxerutin can inhibit TRPV1 activation in clinical and in vitro tests.

In this report, we have investigated on the defect state of diborane (B2H6) doped wide bandgap hydrogenated amorphous silicon oxide (p-type a-SiO:H) films prepared using silane (SiH4), hydrogen (H2) and nitrous oxide (N2O) in a radio frequency (RF) plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) system with different hydrogen dilutions. The films prepared with higher hydrogen dilution show lower Urbach energy (Eu), lower microstructure (R*), lower short and medium range disorder (omegaTO, Gamma(TO), I(TA)/I(TO), I(LA)/I(TO)), higher dark conductivity (sigma d) and higher refractive index (n) with high optical gap (Eg). Eu decreases from 248 meV to 153 meV, and R* decreases from 0.46 to 0.26, Raman peak omegaTO-TO mode position shifts from 480.24 to 483.28, GammaTO-full width half maximum of omegaTO decreases from 78.16 to 63.87, I(TA)/I(TO)-the ratio of integrated area of TA and TO mode decreases from 0.624 to 0.474, I(LA)/I(TO)-the ratio of integrated area of LA and TO mode deceases from 0.272 to 0.151, sigma d increases from 4.6 x 10(-7) S/cm to 1.1 x 10(-6) S/cm, n increases from 3.70 to 3.86. Reduced Nd, Eu and R* at wide Eg indicates that the films are more useful for solar cell window layer. Applying this layer to a single junction solar cell shows open circuit voltage (Voc) = 0.80 V, short circuit current density (Jsc) = 16.3 mA/cm2, fill factor (FF) = 72%, efficiency (eta) = 9.4%.

We report aluminum doped zinc oxide (AZO) films with high work function as an insertion layer between transparent conducting oxides (TCO) and hydrogenated amorphous silicon carbide (a-SiC:H) layer to improve open circuit voltage (V(oc)) and fill factor (FF) for thin film solar cells. Amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) solar cells exhibit poor fill factors due to a Schottky barrier at the interface between a-SiC:H window and TCO. The interface engineering is carried out by inserting an AZO layer with high work function (4.95 eV at O2 = 2 sccm). As a result, V(oc) and FF improved significantly. FF as high as 63.35% is obtained.

In this paper, we present a detailed study on the local back contact (LBC) formation of rear-surface-passivated silicon solar cells, where both the LBC opening and metallization are realized by one-step alloying of a dot of fine pattern screen-printed aluminum paste with the silicon substrate. Based on energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) characterizations, we suggest that the aluminum distribution and the silicon concentration determine the local-back-surface-field (Al-p+) layer thickness, resistivity of the Al-p+ and hence the quality of the Al-p+ formation. The highest penetration of silicon concentration of 78.17% in aluminum resulted in the formation of a 5 microm-deep Al-p+ layer, and the minimum LBC resistivity of 0.92 x 10-6 omega cm2. The degradation of the rear-surface passivation due to high temperature of the LBC formation process can be fully recovered by forming gas annealing (FGA) at temperature and hydrogen content of 450 degrees C and 15%, respectively. The application of the optimized LBC of rear-surface-passivated by a dot of fine pattern screen(-) printed aluminum paste resulted in efficiency of up to 19.98% for the p-type czochralski (CZ) silicon wafers with 10.24 cm2 cell size at 649 mV open circuit voltage. By FGA for rear-surface passivation recovery, efficiencies up to 20.35% with a V(OC) of 662 mV, FF of 82%, and J(SC) of 37.5 mA/cm2 were demonstrated.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to develop a prediction model for stroke-associated pneumonia (SAP) based on risk factors for SAP and to suggest nursing interventions to prevent SAP. In addition, a nomogram was developed to enhance its utility in nursing practice. The retrospective cohort study included 551 patients hospitalized for acute ischemic stroke at a university hospital in South Korea. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire and a review of the electronic medical record (EMR). In the development of a predictive model for SAP, multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that independent risk factors for SAP were age ≥ 65 years, National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score ≥ 7, nasogastric tube feeding, and C-reactive protein (CRP) ≥ 5.0 mg/dL. The logit model was used to construct the SAP prediction nomogram, and the area under the curve (AUC) of the nomogram was 0.94. Furthermore, the slope of the calibration plot was close to the 45-degree line, indicating that the developed nomogram may be useful for predicting SAP. It is necessary to monitor the age, NIHSS score, nasogastric tube feeding status, and CRP level of stroke patients and identify high-risk groups using the developed nomogram to provide active nursing interventions to prevent SAP.

The utility of α-defensin (AD), leukocyte esterase (LE) levels, and metagenomics sequencing as diagnostic tools for prosthetic joint infection (PJI) has been suggested, but there are few studies among the Asian population. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of various biomarkers for PJI and the role of the microbiome in the synovial fluid of patients with prostheses. Patients with suspected knee PJI were enrolled, and their blood and synovial fluid were collected. The cases were classified into the PJI and non-PJI groups. Significant differences between the two groups were observed in the levels of AD (4698 µg/L vs. 296 µg/L, p < 0.001) and positivity for LE (62.5% vs. 21.1%, p = 0.01). AD had 94.4% sensitivity and 89.5% specificity for diagnosing PJI, whereas LE had 37.5% sensitivity and 100% specificity. Microbiome taxonomic profiling showed high sensitivity. The number of operational taxonomic units and the richness of the microbiome in the synovial fluid were higher in the non-PJI than in the PJI group. AD has shown encouraging results in the Asian population as a diagnostic biomarker for PJI, and LE can be used as a diagnostic adjunct. The bacterial richness of the synovial fluid is likely associated with infections.

BACKGROUND: Comparative analyses of SARS-CoV-2-specific immune responses elicited by diverse prime-boost regimens are required to establish efficient regimens for the control of COVID-19. METHOD: In this prospective observational cohort study, spike-specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) and neutralizing antibodies (nAbs) alongside spike-specific T-cell responses in age-matched groups of homologous BNT162b2/BNT162b2 or AZD1222/AZD1222 vaccination, heterologous AZD1222/BNT162b2 vaccination, and prior wild-type SARS-CoV-2 infection/vaccination were evaluated. RESULTS: Peak immune responses were achieved after the second vaccine dose in the naïve vaccinated groups and after the first dose in the prior infection/vaccination group. Peak titers of anti-spike IgG and nAb were significantly higher in the AZD1222/BNT162b2 vaccination and prior infection/vaccination groups than in the BNT162b2/BNT162b2 or AZD1222/AZD1222 groups. However, the frequency of interferon-γ-producing CD4+ T cells was highest in the BNT162b2/BNT162b2 vaccination group. Similar results were observed in the analysis of polyfunctional T cells. When nAb and CD4+T-cell responses against the Delta variant were analyzed, the prior infection/vaccination group exhibited higher responses than the groups of other homologous or heterologous vaccination regimens. CONCLUSION: nAbs are efficiently elicited by heterologous AZD1222/BNT162b2 vaccination, as well as prior infection/vaccination, whereas spike-specific CD4+T-cell responses are efficiently elicited by homologous BNT162b2 vaccination. Variant-recognizing immunity is more efficiently generated by prior infection/vaccination than the other homologous or heterologous vaccination regimens.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: We aimed to assess the humoral response to and reactogenicity of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination according to the vaccine type and to analyze factors associated with immunogenicity in actively treated solid cancer patients (CPs). Materials and Methods: Prospective cohorts of CPs, undergoing anticancer treatment, and healthcare workers (HCWs) were established. The participants had no history of previous COVID-19 and received either mRNA-based or adenovirus vector-based (AdV) vaccines as the primary series. Blood samples were collected before the first vaccination and after 2 weeks for each dose vaccination. Spike-specific binding antibodies (bAbs) in all participants and neutralizing antibodies (nAbs) against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) wild-type, Delta, and Omicron variants in CPs were analyzed and presented as the geometric mean titer. RESULTS: Age-matched 20 HCWs and 118 CPs were included in the analysis. The bAb seroconversion rate and antibody concentrations after the first vaccination were significantly lower in CPs than in HCWs. After the third vaccination, antibody levels in CPs with a primary series of AdV were comparable to those in HCWs, but nAb titers against the Omicron variant did not quantitatively increase in CPs with AdV vaccine as the primary series. The incidence and severity of adverse reactions post-vaccination were similar between CPs and HCWs. CONCLUSION: CPs displayed delayed humoral immune response after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. The booster dose elicited comparable bAb concentrations between CPs and HCWs, regardless of the primary vaccine type. Neutralization against the Omicron variant was not robustly elicited following the booster dose in some CPs, implying the need for additional interventions to protect them from COVID-19.

ABSTRACT

In amorphous silicon solar cells, degradation is directly related to V(oc), FF and cell performance. The dependence of the stability of thin film amorphous silicon solar cells is studied in terms of the volume fraction of B2H6 in the p-layer. When the volume fraction of B2H6 is increased by an order of magnitude, the doping-induced defects tend to increase quite rapidly. Low-doped p-type a-SiO(x) layers had better initial properties but rapidly degraded. Heavily doped p-type a-SiO(x) layers had lower initial properties but displayed better stability. The improvement in stability is explained in conjunction with the capacitance and resistance values of impedance spectroscopy. When the B2H6 gas flow rate is increased, the cell is degraded showing a capacitance decay decrease from 51.75% to less than 18.18%. In addition, the increase in the resistance decreased from 90.90% to 11.73%.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes is characterized by progressive beta-cell failure and apoptosis is probably the main form of beta-cell death in this disease. It was reported that circulating levels of interleukin-6 are elevated in type 2 diabetic patients, but whether this is involved in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes is still debated. In this study, we examined whether interleukin-6 can induce beta-cell damage in vitro and elucidated its mechanisms. METHODS: To examine the effect of interleukin-6 on beta cells, glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS) by enzyme immunoassay (EIA) method and cell apoptosis by propidium iodide and annexin-V staining were measured in a rat beta-cell line (INS-1 or INS-832/13) after treatment with interleukin-6. The expression of apoptosis-related molecules was measured using western blotting and nitric oxide (NO) production was measured using Griess assay. AG490 and N-monomethyl-L-arginine were used to inhibit Janus kinase-mediated signal transducers and activators of transcription signalling and NO production, respectively. RESULTS: Exposure (48 h) of INS-1 cells to 20 ng/mL interleukin-6 significantly decreased GSIS as well as cell viability. We found that sub-G1/G0 population was increased as compared with untreated cells and expression of cleaved caspase-3, cleaved poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase, phosphorylated p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase and phosphorylated nuclear factor-κB was increased in interleukin-6-treated INS-1 cells. Interleukin-6 increased the amount of early apoptotic cells; this increase was blocked by AG490 or N-monomethyl-L-arginine treatment. Moreover, NO production, which is known to induce apoptosis, was increased by interleukin-6 treatment but abrogated in AG490-treated cells. CONCLUSION: Our results show that exposure to interleukin-6 for 48 h can induce beta-cell death, in part via signal transducers and activators of transcription-3-mediated NO production.

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of mitochondrial metabolism on high glucose/palmitate (HG/PA)-induced INS-1 beta cell death. Long-term treatment of INS-1 cells with HG/PA impaired energy-producing metabolism accompanying with depletion of TCA cycle intermediates. Whereas an inhibitor of carnitine palmitoyl transferase 1 augmented HG/PA-induced INS-1 cell death, stimulators of fatty acid oxidation protected the cells against the HG/PA-induced death. Furthermore, whereas mitochondrial pyruvate carboxylase inhibitor phenylacetic acid augmented HG/PA-induced INS-1 cell death, supplementation of TCA cycle metabolites including leucine/glutamine, methyl succinate/α-ketoisocaproic acid, dimethyl malate, and valeric acid or treatment with a glutamate dehydrogenase activator, aminobicyclo-heptane-2-carboxylic acid (BCH), significantly protected the cells against the HG/PA-induced death. In particular, the mitochondrial tricarboxylate carrier inhibitor, benzene tricarboxylate (BTA), also showed a strong protective effect on the HG/PA-induced INS-1 cell death. Knockdown of glutamate dehydrogenase or tricarboxylate carrier augmented or reduced the HG/PA-induced INS-1 cell death, respectively. Both BCH and BTA restored HG/PA-induced reduction of energy metabolism as well as depletion of TCA intermediates. These data suggest that depletion of the TCA cycle intermediate pool and impaired energy-producing metabolism may play a role in HG/PA-induced cytotoxicity to beta cells and thus, HG/PA-induced beta cell glucolipotoxicity can be protected by nutritional or pharmacological maneuver enhancing anaplerosis or reducing cataplerosis.

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: As the emergency department (ED) is an important source of potential organ donors, it may play an important role in the organ donation process. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness of the multidisciplinary organ donation improvement program (ODIP) on identifying potential donors and improving organ donation in South Korean EDs. DESIGN, SETTINGS, AND PARTICIPANTS: This study was a retrospective, observational study of the ED-inclusive ODIP implemented in 55 tertiary teaching hospitals contracted with the Korea Organ Donation Agency (KODA) since 2014. The inclusion criteria were: patients in the ED with a serious brain injury and futile prognosis or expected death of the patient within a few days, no contraindications for organ donation, and no objections registered in the donor registry. INTERVENTION: The ED-inclusive multidisciplinary approach was implemented to improve organ donation. It included regular meetings of the ODIP committee, hospital visits and staff education, improvement of notifications, and support of a coordination team. OUTCOMES MEASURE AND ANALYSIS: We assessed the changes in the number of deceased organ donors per year and notifications of potential brain-dead donors by medical staff after the implementation of the new ED-inclusive ODIP. The entire organ donation process was monitored and measured. RESULTS: There was a significant increase in deceased organ donors per million population after the implementation of the ED-inclusive multidisciplinary ODIP of KODA compared to the pre-intervention period: 5.21 vs. 9.72, difference 4.51 (95% confidence interval 2.11-6.91). During the study period, the proportion of deceased organ donors occurred from KODA-contracted hospitals increased from 25.3 to 50.3% in South Korea's total deceased organ donors. Emergency physicians of KODA-contracted hospitals notified increasingly more potential brain-dead donors each year throughout the study period (36 in 2014 vs. 135 in 2018). The longer the period contracted with KODA, the higher the potential brain-death identification rates (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: In this retrospective study, the implementation of multidisciplinary ODIP in the ED led to significantly higher deceased organ donors per million population and awareness of potential brain-dead donors in South Korea.

ABSTRACT

We report the genome sequences of two GH clade severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) strains isolated from nasopharyngeal swabs from patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in South Korea. These strains had two mutations in the untranslated regions and seven nonsynonymous substitutions in open reading frames, compared with Wuhan/Hu-1/2019, showing 99.96% sequence identity.

Previous studies have documented the protective effects of social participation on depression in older adults. In this study, we investigated the association between social participation and depressive symptoms and the associated gender difference in older adults. In addition, we explored the mediating role of emotional social support in the association between social participation and depressive symptoms. We collected data from 4751 community-dwelling adults aged 60 and above from the Korean Retirement and Income Study (KReIS) conducted in 2017 and 2018. The relationship between social participation (participation in different types of activities, frequency of participation, and the number of activities participated) and the risk for depressive symptoms was examined. Older adults who participated in social activity, volunteer work, and donation had decreased risk of depressive symptoms. More frequent and more diverse participation in activities further reduced the risk. Overall, women benefited more from social participation than men. Importantly, emotional social support significantly mediated the relationship between social participation and depressive symptoms. Social participation was associated lower odds for depression in older adults, particularly in older women. Our findings provided one of very few pieces of evidence that documents the mediating role of emotional social support in the relationship between social participation and depression among the elderly.

ABSTRACT

In spite of the large number of repositioned drugs and direct-acting antivirals in clinical trials for the management of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, there are few cost-effective therapeutic options for severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) coronavirus 2 (SCoV2) infection. In this paper, we show that xanthorrhizol (XNT), a bisabolane-type sesquiterpenoid compound isolated from the Curcuma xanthorrhizza Roxb., a ginger-line plant of the family Zingiberaceae, displays a potent antiviral efficacy in vitro against SCoV2 and other related coronaviruses, including SARS-CoV-1 (SCoV1) and a common cold-causing human coronavirus. XNT reduced infectious SCoV2 titer by ~3-log10 at 20 µM and interfered with the replication of the SCoV1 subgenomic replicon, while it had no significant antiviral effects against hepatitis C virus and noroviruses. Further, XNT exerted similar antiviral functions against SCoV2 variants, such as a GH clade strain and a delta strain currently predominant worldwide. Neither SCoV2 entry into cells nor the enzymatic activity of viral RNA polymerase (Nsp12), RNA helicase (Nsp13), or the 3CL main protease (Nsp5) was inhibited by XNT. While its CoV replication inhibitory mechanism remains elusive, our results demonstrate that the traditional folk medicine XNT could be a promising antiviral candidate that inhibits a broad range of SCoV2 variants of concern and other related CoVs.

OBJECTIVES: Adolescent suicide is a serious social problem. Adolescent alcohol use is one of the most important risk factors for adolescent suicide. This study aimed to identify the relationship between drinking habits and suicide among Korean adolescents. METHODS: Data from the 14th and 15th Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey, conducted in 2018 and 2019, were used for analysis. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to identify the relationship between drinking habits-including the age of drinking initiation, frequency of drinking, average drinking amount, frequency of drunkenness-and suicidal ideation, plans, and attempts. RESULTS: Even after adjusting for age, sex, school grade, academic achievement, socioeconomic status, depression, stress, and drinking habits, the frequencies of drinking and drunkenness increased the risk of suicide attempts. Suicide attempts were associated with the frequency of drinking in girls and middle school students, and with the frequency of drunkenness in boys and high school students. CONCLUSION: This study identified associations between drinking habits (the age of drinking initiation, frequency of drinking, average amount of drinking, frequency of drunkenness) and suicidal behavior in adolescents. Our findings suggest that to prevent adolescent suicide, it might be necessary to investigate drinking habits, including the frequencies of drinking and drunkenness. Moreover, considering the differences in sex and school grade, it is important to include the individual group characteristics when evaluating drinking habits.
