ABSTRACT

An ultrasound detector (UD) was compared with a clinical rating (CR) scale in the assessment of oro-facial movements in 23 chronic schizophrenic patients and 23 normal subjects over a period of 4 weeks. The apparatus distinguished well between normal volunteers and dyskinetic patients. There were also highly significant correlations between UD scores and clinical ratings. The results thus confirm both the construct and concurrent validity of the technique. Nevertheless, there was significant variation in the UD scores for some patients between assessments. A technical problem was the inability of some patients to cooperate for more than 30 seconds. The scores of the normal subjects were consistent. With further development and repeated 30-second assessments the technique might be of value in the ascertainment of early dyskinesia in patients at risk and also in measuring drug effects.

ABSTRACT

We have encountered three cases of a recently recognized form of granulosa cell tumor referred to by Scully as the juvenile type, and we have made ultrastructural observations on one case. This variant is encountered almost exclusively in the first two decades, and is characterized at the optical microscopic level by a macrofollicular or a diffuse, sometime disorderly pattern of growth, often with extensive luteinization and hyperchromatic nuclei. One of our patients developed precocious pseudopuberty. Our ultrastructural observations in this case supported the concept that this tumor is a granulosa cell tumor, and the tumor showed some similarities to previously reported granulosa cell tumors. A spectrum of cells was observed ranging from well differentiated granulosa cells to stromal cells with many intermediate forms present. The stromal cells varied from being fibroblast-like to theca-like. Both granulosa and stromal cells sometimes contained abundant lipid. Evidence of luteinization, i.e. abundant smooth endoplasmic reticulum and tubular mitochondrial cristae, was not noted in either the granulosa or stromal cells. Focal areas of smooth endoplasmic reticulum were found, however, in teh cytoplasm of cells intermediate between granulosa and stromal types. These cells may represent the source of steroid hormone secretion.

ABSTRACT

Metastatic tumors to the jaw are relatively uncommon. When they occur, the primary tumor is most likely to be an adenocarcinoma from the breast, lung, or kidney. Metastatic tumors most frequently involve the mandible rather than the maxilla. The route of metastasis is considered hematogenous, although spread via lymphatic channels or the vertebral venous plexus may occur. An unusual instance of primary chondrosarcoma of the scapula metastasizing to the maxilla and to various soft tissue sites from tumor emboli, probably arising from an extensive metastatic lesion of the left atrium of the heart, has been presented.
