ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Insect-based proteins are high-quality alternatives to support the shift toward more sustainable and healthy diets. Additionally, insects contain chitin and have unique fatty acid profiles. Studies have shown that mealworms may beneficially affect metabolism, but limited information is known regarding their effects on gut microbiota. OBJECTIVES: We determined the effects of defatted yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) and whole lesser mealworm (Alphitobius diaperinus) meals on the intestinal microbiota of diet-induced obesity mice. METHODS: Male C57BL/6J mice were fed a high-fat diet (HFD; 46% kcal) to induce obesity. Obese mice were then randomly assigned to treatments (n = 10/group) and fed for 8 wk: HFD, HFD with casein protein; B50, HFD with 50% protein from whole lesser mealworm; B100, HFD with 100% protein from whole lesser mealworm; Y50, HFD with 50% protein from defatted yellow mealworm; Y100, HFD with 100% protein from defatted yellow mealworm. Lean mice (n = 10) fed a low-fat-diet (10% kcal) were included. Fresh feces were collected at baseline and every 2 wk, with cecal digesta collected at kill. Fecal and cecal DNA was analyzed for microbiota using 16S rRNA MiSeq Illumina sequencing. RESULTS: In feces and cecal digesta, mice fed mealworms had greater (P < 0.05) bacterial alpha diversity, with changes occurring in a time-dependent manner (P < 0.05). Beta diversity analyses of cecal samples showed a clear separation of treatments, with a time-based separation shown in fecal samples. Widespread microbial differences were observed, with over 45 genera altered (P < 0.05) by diet in cecal digesta. In feces, over 50 genera and 40 genera were altered (P < 0.05) by diet and time, respectively. CONCLUSION: Mealworm consumption changes the intestinal microbiota of obese mice, increasing alpha diversity measures and shifting bacterial taxa. More investigation is required to determine what mealworm components are responsible and how they may be linked with the metabolic benefits observed in mealworm-fed mice.

BACKGROUND: High-protein diets not only meet amino acid needs but also modulate satiety and energy metabolism. Insect-based proteins are sustainable, high-quality proteins. Mealworms have been studied, but limited information is known about their ability to impact metabolism and obesity. OBJECTIVE: We determined the effects of defatted yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor)- and whole lesser mealworm (Alphitobius diaperinus)-based proteins on the body weight (BW), serum metabolites, and liver and adipose tissue (AT) histology and gene expression of diet-induced obesity mice. METHODS: Male C57BL/6J mice were fed a high-fat diet (HFD; 46% kcal) to induce obesity and metabolic syndrome. Obese mice were then assigned to treatments (n = 10/group) and fed for 8 wk: HFD: HFD with casein protein; B50: HFD with 50% protein from whole lesser mealworm; B100: HFD with 100% protein from whole lesser mealworm; Y50: HFD with 50% protein from defatted yellow mealworm; Y100: HFD with 100% protein from defatted yellow mealworm. Lean mice (n = 10) fed a low-fat-diet (LFD; 10% kcal) were included. Longitudinal food intake, BW, body composition, and glucose response were measured. At time of killing, serum metabolites, tissue histopathology and gene expression, and hepatic triglycerides were analyzed. RESULTS: After 8 wk, HFD, B50, and B100 had greater (P < 0.05) weight gain than LFD, whereas Y50 and Y100 did not. Y50, B100, and Y100 had a lower (P < 0.05) BW change rate than HFD. Mealworm-based diets led to increased (P < 0.05) serum high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and reduced (P < 0.05) serum low-density lipoprotein (LDL) concentrations and reduced (P<0.05) LDL/HDL ratio. Mealworm-based diets led to increased (P < 0.05) hepatic expression of genes related to energy balance, immune response, and antioxidants and reduced (P < 0.05) AT expression of genes associated with inflammation and apoptosis. Mealworm-based diets altered (P < 0.05) hepatic and AT expression of glucose and lipid metabolism genes. CONCLUSIONS: In addition to serving as an alternative protein source, mealworms may confer health benefits to obese patients.

ABSTRACT

Spices such as paprika, curry, turmeric, dry chilli, and black pepper are grown in various geographic locations and widely used by consumers across the world. Pesticides applied during crop production practices could contaminate the produce, affecting the quality and posing a health risk for consumers. The complexity of the spice matrix and the wide range of target pesticides potentially present require special sample extraction and clean-up treatments to overcome matrix interference and ion suppression. In this study, sample extracts from spice matrices (paprika/curry/turmeric/dry chilli/black pepper) were cleaned up by an automated µSPE clean-up method for multi-residue analysis of pesticides using LC-MS/MS. The automated µSPE clean-up method involves pre-filled cartridges containing various sorbent materials suitable for numerous co-extractives and the automated clean-up process was carried out using an autosampler. The regulatory limit for pesticides in spices varies with type, with a low MRL of 0.05 mg kg-1 or higher for 99% of the analytes. At spiking concentrations of 0.05 and 0.1 mg kg-1, good recoveries between 70 and 120% with RSD values below 20% were achieved for more than 98% of the compounds. With automatic clean-up of samples that takes 5 min/sample, 20% increased output per day shows an important advantage achieved compared to manual clean-up.

ABSTRACT

Although liver transplantation (LT) recipients are at high cardiovascular risk (CVR), the management of CVR factors (CVRF) after LT is far from optimal and needs to be improved. For this reason, we developed a multidisciplinary protocol to standardize the identification, risk stratification, management, and targets of therapy of CVRF during the first post-LT year. The grade of identification and control of CVRF 12 months after LT in the postintervention cohort (LT January 2018-January 2020, n = 150) were compared with a control cohort who underwent LT between July 2015 and December 2016 (n = 100). Before LT, the prevalence of metabolic-associated fatty liver disease as the indication of LT and the presence of obesity were significantly higher in the postintervention cohort, whereas the prevalence of other CVRF and renal dysfunction tended to be higher. Cyclosporine A was used less frequently in the postintervention cohort, whereas everolimus tended to increase. At 12 months after LT, the proportion of patients with measured blood pressure (88% vs. 56%), glycosilated hemoglobin (HbA1c; 96% vs. 72%), and high-density lipoprotein/low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (67% vs. 33%) was higher in the postintervention than in the control cohort (all p < 0.001). Blood pressure (64% vs. 36%, p = 0.02) and HbA1c (85% vs. 70%, p = 0.1) were within target in more individuals with hypertension and diabetes mellitus, respectively, in the postintervention cohort. Median total cholesterol levels were lower in the postintervention (184 mg/dl; interquartile range [IQR], 160-210 mg/dl) than in the control cohort (212 mg/dl; IQR, 186-240 mg/dl; p = 0.02). At 2 years after LT, the incidence of cardiovascular events was 14% in the control cohort and 6% in the postintervention cohort (p = 0.063). In conclusion, a multidisciplinary, multiprofessional strategy can achieve a higher grade of assessment and management of post-LT CVR despite a worsening metabolic profile of LT recipients.

ABSTRACT

Major depressive disorder (MDD), schizophrenia (SCZ), and bipolar disorder (BD) have both shared and discrete genetic risk factors, and are associated with peripheral abnormalities. The relationships between such genetic architectures and blood-based markers are, however, unclear. We investigated relationships between polygenic risk scores (PRS) for these disorders and peripheral markers in the UK Biobank cohort. We calculated polygenic risk scores for n = 367,329 (MDD PRS), n = 366,465 (SCZ PRS), and n = 366,383 (BD PRS) UK Biobank cohort subjects. We then examined associations between disorder PRS and 58 inflammatory/immune, hematological, bone, cardiovascular, hormone, liver, renal and diabetes-associated blood markers using two generalized linear regression models: 'minimally adjusted' controlling for variables such as age and sex, and 'fully adjusted' including additional lifestyle covariates: BMI, alcohol and smoking status, and medication intake. There were 38/58 MDD PRS, 32/58 SCZ PRS, and 20/58 BD PRS-blood marker associations detected for our minimally adjusted model. Of these, 13/38 (MDD PRS), 14/32 (SCZ PRS), and 10/20 (BD PRS) associations remained significant after controlling for lifestyle factors. Many were disorder-specific, with 8/13 unique MDD PRS associations identified. Several disorder-specific associations for MDD and SCZ were immune-related, with mostly positive and negative associations identified for MDD and SCZ PRS respectively. This study suggests that MDD, SCZ and BD have both shared and distinct peripheral markers associated with disorder-specific genetic risk. The results also implicate inflammatory dysfunction in MDD and SCZ, albeit with differences in patterns between the two conditions, and enrich our understanding of potential underlying pathophysiological mechanisms in major psychiatric disorders.

ABSTRACT

Combined ultrasound (US)-guided blockade of the suprascapular and axillary nerves (ANs) has been proposed as an alternative to interscalene blockade for pain control in shoulder joint pathology or postsurgical care. This technique could help avoid respiratory complications and/or almost total upper limb palsy. Nowadays, the AN blockade is mostly performed using an in-plane caudal-to-cephalic approach from the posterior surface of the shoulder, reaching the nerve immediately after it exits the neurovascular quadrangular space (part of the spatium axillare). Despite precluding most respiratory complications, this approach has not made postsurgical pain relief any better than an interscalene blockade, probably because articular branches of the AN are not blocked.Cephalic-to-caudal methylene blue injections were placed in the first segment of the AN of six Thiel-embalmed cadavers using an US-guided anterior approach in order to compare the distribution with that produced by a posterior approach to the contralateral AN in the same cadaver. Another 21 formalin-fixed cadavers were bilaterally dissected to identify the articular branches of the AN.We found a good spread of the dye on the AN and a constant relationship of this nerve with the subscapularis muscle. The dye reached the musculocutaneous nerve, which also contributes to shoulder joint innervation. We describe the anatomical landmarks for an ultrasonography-guided anterior AN blockade and hypothesize that this anterior approach will provide better pain control than the posterior approach owing to complete blocking of the joint nerve. With the aim of understanding the mechanisms involved in the regurgitation behavior of tephritid flies, we performed a structural study of the digestive system of the economically important fruit-fly pest, Anastrepha ludens (Loew) using optical, scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), plus a feeding assay. Most structures studied are similar to those previously reported in other adult dipterans, but, importantly, we found sexual differences in some structures that apparently affect regurgitation. We report for the first time sexual differences in the crop duct nerve and large numbers of dense core vesicles within the nerve bundle. Male nerve bundles are bigger and have more secretory vesicles than female ones. The close proximity to the muscles of both the crop lobes and duct suggest that these vesicles (i.e., possibly neurosecretions) might help modulate the muscles regulating regurgitation. The salivary glands are connected to the crop via tracheae, however, SEM/TEM studies failed to find any direct structural connection. Results of the feeding assay indicate that, independently of food type (sucrose or protein) and age, males regurgitate significantly more than females. Regurgitation behavior may also play an important role in capturing bacteria in the environment, and possibly help adults eliminate ingested toxicants such as insecticides. Our findings shed light on an interesting phenomenon that has important practical implications.

BACKGROUND: The intracellular delivery of enzymes for therapeutic use has a promising future for the treatment of several diseases such as genetic disorders and cancer. Virus-like particles offer an interesting platform for enzymatic delivery to targeted cells because of their great cargo capacity and the enhancement of the biocatalyst stability towards several factors important in the practical application of these nanoparticles. RESULTS: We have designed a nano-bioreactor based on the encapsulation of a cytochrome P450 (CYP) inside the capsid derived from the bacteriophage P22. An enhanced peroxigenase, CYPBM3, was selected as a model enzyme because of its potential in enzyme prodrug therapy. A total of 109 enzymes per capsid were encapsulated with a 70 % retention of activity for cytochromes with the correct incorporation of the heme cofactor. Upon encapsulation, the stability of the enzyme towards protease degradation and acidic pH was increased. Cytochrome P450 activity was delivered into Human cervix carcinoma cells via transfecting P22-CYP nanoparticles with lipofectamine. CONCLUSION: This work provides a clear demonstration of the potential of biocatalytic virus-like particles as medical relevant enzymatic delivery vehicles for clinical applications.

ABSTRACT

Pesticide contamination in emerging foods and supplements is currently a topic of great interest. This study focused on the evaluation of pesticide residues in commercial bee pollen samples to evaluate the risk associated with their consumption. To this end, an automated clean-up method for the pesticide extracts of bee pollen was developed. An LC-MS/MS and a GC-MS/MS method were validated for the analysis of 353 pesticides in 80 bee pollen samples purchased from different countries. The results showed the presence of 77 different pesticide residues in bee pollen, including plant protection chemicals and veterinary treatments. 85 % of the samples were contaminated with pesticides and no relevant differences were found between conventional and organic samples. Pesticide concentrations exceeding the imposed MRL were found in 40 % of the samples, but the risk assessment showed that consumers are not exposed to an unacceptable risk when consuming the evaluated bee pollen.

ABSTRACT

Early childhood intervention is crucial for the development of minors with disabilities or at risk. Family-centred planning (FCP), which involves families in care, stands out in this context. Despite its importance, little is known about professionals' experiences of its implementation. FCP aims to tailor services to the needs of the family and the child within the Spanish health system. This study highlights the importance of assessing professionals' perceptions of FCP. Professionals rooted in traditional approaches may resist change. To assess the implementation of FCPs, the study explores the perspectives of 25 healthcare professionals using qualitative methods to assess their experiences. The qualitative descriptive phenomenological design, following Giorgi's modified Husserlian approach, seeks to understand the essence of the phenomenon from the participants' perspective. Two main themes emerged: (1) a social and work organization that perpetuates rehabilitation or early stimulation practices and (2) a socio-family and work organization that promotes FCP adherence, along with subthemes and units of meaning. The evaluation reveals common challenges, such as the need for solid training and institutional support. Evaluating the experience of professionals is essential to overcome barriers and ensure the successful implementation of FCPs. Administrators have an important role to play in providing social, health, and educational alternatives.

ABSTRACT

The analysis of pesticide residues and mycotoxins in baby food demands exceptionally low limits of quantitation, necessitating the use of highly sensitive instruments capable of conducting trace analyses. High-resolution instruments typically fail to detect such low levels. However, the latest advancements in liquid time-of-flight technology, when coupled with ion trapping, enable ion enrichment, thereby improving detection levels. This allows for the analysis of these substances at low concentration levels, benefiting from enhanced mass accuracy. Additionally, the use of mass accuracy data helped eliminate matrix interferences, thereby enabling high-confidence identification. We developed a multi-residue method to analyse 219 pesticide residues and 9 mycotoxin residues in baby food matrices. Utilizing a QuEChERS-based extraction method, the samples were then analysed using an LC-Zeno® trap QTOF with mass window screening acquisition. For pesticides, the limit of quantitation was 0.001-0.003 mg/kg for 81 % of the evaluated compounds, 0.005 mg/kg for 13 %, 0.010 mg/kg for 4 % and 0.020-0.030 for 2 %; good linearities were obtained at these levels. Apparent recoveries were evaluated at 0.003, 0.005, and 0.010 mg/kg. At the lowest recovery level, 93 % of compounds showed recoveries between 70 and 120 %. The rest of the compounds were in the range of 63-129 %, with relative standard deviation values below 20 %. For mycotoxins, the limits of quantitation ranged from 0.0001 to 0.100 mg/kg, with matrix-matched concentrations assessed within this range. Recoveries were evaluated at low concentration range (0.001-0.003 mg/kg) and high range (0.020-0.050) with apparent recoveries values between 92 and 140 %. Finally, a total of 31 commercial baby food samples were analysed using this method. The results indicated that 16 samples contained pesticide residues, while two samples were found to have mycotoxins.

We have conducted a 10-year-long coprological study of the animals housed in two zoological institutions (ZooAquarium and Faunia, Madrid, Spain) to assess the parasite biodiversity, prevalence, and their relation with host class, diet, and enclosure type (soil type and level of isolation from wild fauna). A total of 4476 faecal samples from 132 mammal species and 951 samples from 86 avian species were examined. The results indicated that only 12.8% of avian species had parasites at least once during the study period, whereas 62.1% of mammal species tested positive. Predominantly, protists (Entamoeba, flagellates, and ciliates) and nematodes (mainly Trichuris) were identified in the findings. Carnivorous species were primarily infected by nematodes, while herbivorous and omnivorous species were mainly infected by protists. The number of infected herbivorous and omnivorous species was significantly greater than carnivorous species. Differences were observed based on soil type (artificial, natural, mixed) and isolation level (isolated/accessible), but these differences were not statistically significant. Several parasites (Entamoeba spp., Giardia spp., Balantidoides coli, Trichuris spp.) could potentially be transmitted between humans and some mammals and birds. Regular animal analyses and a personnel health program in the institutions would minimise transmission risks between zoo animals, wildlife, and humans.

Infant attachment is an antecedent of later socioemotional abilities, which can be adversely affected by preterm birth. The structural integrity of amygdalae and hippocampi may subserve attachment in infancy. We aimed to investigate associations between neonatal amygdalae and hippocampi structure and their whole-brain connections and attachment behaviours at nine months of age in a sample of infants enriched for preterm birth. In 133 neonates (median gestational age 32 weeks, range 22.14-42.14), we calculated measures of amygdala and hippocampal structure (volume, fractional anisotropy, mean diffusivity, neurite dispersion index, orientation dispersion index) and structural connectivity, and coded attachment behaviours (distress, fretfulness, attentiveness to caregiver) from responses to the Still-Face Paradigm at nine months. After multiple comparisons correction, there were no significant associations between neonatal amygdala or hippocampal structure and structural connectivity and attachment behaviours: standardised ß values - 0.23 to 0.18, adjusted p-values > 0.40. Findings indicate that the neural basis of infant attachment in term and preterm infants is not contingent on the structure or connectivity of the amygdalae and hippocampi in the neonatal period, which implies that it is more widely distributed in early life and or that network specialisation takes place in the months after hospital discharge.

ABSTRACT

The primate hippocampus includes the dentate gyrus, cornu ammonis (CA), and subiculum. CA is subdivided into four fields (CA1-CA3, plus CA3h/hilus of the dentate gyrus) with specific pyramidal cell morphology and connections. Work in non-human mammals has shown that hippocampal connectivity is precisely patterned both in the laminar and longitudinal axes. One of the main handicaps in the study of neuropathological semiology in the human hippocampus is the lack of clear laminar and longitudinal borders. The aim of this study was to explore a histochemical segmentation of the adult human hippocampus, integrating field (medio-lateral), laminar, and anteroposterior longitudinal patterning. We provide criteria for head-body-tail field and subfield parcellation of the human hippocampus based on immunodetection of Rabphilin3a (Rph3a), Purkinje-cell protein 4 (PCP4), Chromogranin A and Regulation of G protein signaling-14 (RGS-14). Notably, Rph3a and PCP4 allow to identify the border between CA3 and CA2, while Chromogranin A and RGS-14 give specific staining of CA2. We also provide novel histological data about the composition of human-specific regions of the anterior and posterior hippocampus. The data are given with stereotaxic coordinates along the longitudinal axis. This study provides novel insights for a detailed region-specific parcellation of the human hippocampus useful for human brain imaging and neuropathology.

OBJECTIVES: The Gold Standard treatment for a non-metastatic, invasive bladder cancer is an open radical cystoprostatectomy (ORCP). Laparoscopic radical cystoprostatectomy (LRCP) is still an experimental technique in evaluation. We describe our perioperative results defined as surgical and safety oncology variables. METHODS: Every patient who underwent a LRCP between January 2007 and July 2011 in the urology department of the University Public Hospital was evaluated. We perform a descriptive retrospective analysis. RESULTS: We evaluated 84 patients, 72 males and 12 females, with a mean age of 68 (44-79). A Bricker diversion was performed in 80 patients, a Camey II bladder replacement was performed in 3 patients, and a Studer bladder replacement was performed in 1 patient. Seventeen patients (20.23%) presented with previous abdominal surgery, and 6 patients (7.14%) presented a medical history of urological surgery. The mean surgery time was 257.57 minutes (180-420). The mean hospital stay was 11.875 days (standard deviation (SD): 6.28). The onset of tolerance to surgery occurred after 3.7 days (SD: 2.21).The transfusion rate after surgical intervention was 20.2%. The mean number of nodes removed, by means of ilio-obturator lymphadenectomy, was 17 (13-19). There were no intraoperative complications. Early complications (less than 1 month after the intervention) occurred in 28 patients (33.3% ).There were no post-operative deaths. There were late complications (starting one month after the intervention) in 7 patients (8.3% ). CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrated that LRCP is safe and reproducible and represents a minimally invasive option for patients with infiltrative bladder cancer.

ABSTRACT

Clean-up step is essential during the multiresidue sample preparation process to remove undesired matrix components that may cause analytical interferences or suppression effect. However, its application generally by specific sorbents entails time-consuming work producing low recoveries for some compounds. Moreover, it usually needs to be adapted to the different co-extractives from the matrix present in the samples by using different chemical sorbents increasing the number of validation procedures. Therefore, the development of a more efficient and automated and unified clean-up procedure means a significant time reduction and laboratory work with improved performance. In this study, extracts from different matrices (tomato, orange, rice, avocado and black tea) were purified by manual dispersive clean-up (different procedures according to the matrix group) in parallel with an automated µSPE clean-up workflow, in both cases based on QuEChERS extraction. The latter procedure employed clean-up cartridges containing a mixture of sorbent materials (anhydrous MgSO4/PSA/C18/CarbonX) suitable for multiple matrices. All the samples were analysed by liquid chromatography mass spectrometry and the results obtained from both procedures have been compared in terms of the extract cleanness, performance, interferences, and sample workflow. At the levels studied, similar recoveries were achieved by both techniques (manual and automated) except for reactive compounds when PSA was used as the sorbent material producing low recoveries. However, the µSPE recoveries were between 70-120%. Furthermore, closer calibration line slopes were provided when µSPE was applied to the different matrix groups studied. It is important to note that up to 30% more samples per day can be analysed using an automated µSPE compared to the manual method (which requires shaking, centrifuging, then taking the supernatant and adding formic acid in ACN); it also provides good repeatability - an RSD (%) < 10%. Consequently, this technique is a very useful option for routine analyses, greatly simplifying the work of muti-residue methods.

ABSTRACT

Uncertainty quantification in automated image analysis is highly desired in many applications. Typically, machine learning models in classification or segmentation are only developed to provide binary answers; however, quantifying the uncertainty of the models can play a critical role for example in active learning or machine human interaction. Uncertainty quantification is especially difficult when using deep learning-based models, which are the state-of-the-art in many imaging applications. The current uncertainty quantification approaches do not scale well in high-dimensional real-world problems. Scalable solutions often rely on classical techniques, such as dropout, during inference or training ensembles of identical models with different random seeds to obtain a posterior distribution. In this paper, we present the following contributions. First, we show that the classical approaches fail to approximate the classification probability. Second, we propose a scalable and intuitive framework for uncertainty quantification in medical image segmentation that yields measurements that approximate the classification probability. Third, we suggest the usage of k-fold cross-validation to overcome the need for held out calibration data. Lastly, we motivate the adoption of our method in active learning, creating pseudo-labels to learn from unlabeled images and human-machine collaboration.

ABSTRACT

Endothelial dysfunction is implicated in the development and aggravation of cardiovascular complications. Among the endothelium-released vasoactive factors, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has been investigated for its beneficial effects on the vasculature through anti-inflammatory and redox-modulating regulatory mechanisms. Reduced H2S bioavailability is reported in chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, atherosclerosis and preeclampsia, suggesting the value of investigating mechanisms, by which H2S acts as a vasoprotective gasotransmitter. We explored whether the protective effects of H2S were linked to the mitochondrial health of endothelial cells and the mechanisms by which H2S rescues apoptosis. Here, we demonstrate that endothelial dysfunction induced by TNF-α increased endothelial oxidative stress and induced apoptosis via mitochondrial cytochrome c release and caspase activation over 24 h. TNF-α also affected mitochondrial morphology and altered the mitochondrial network. Post-treatment with the slow-releasing H2S donor, GYY4137, alleviated oxidising redox state, decreased pro-caspase 3 activity, and prevented endothelial apoptosis caused by TNF-α alone. In addition, exogenous GYY4137 enhanced S-sulfhydration of pro-caspase 3 and improved mitochondrial health in TNF-α exposed cells. These data provide new insights into molecular mechanisms for cytoprotective effects of H2S via the mitochondrial-driven pathway.

ABSTRACT

Renal cancer is responsible for over 100,000 yearly deaths and is principally discovered in computed tomography (CT) scans of the abdomen. CT screening would likely increase the rate of early renal cancer detection, and improve general survival rates, but it is expected to have a prohibitively high financial cost. Given recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI), it may be possible to reduce the cost of CT analysis and enable CT screening by automating the radiological tasks that constitute the early renal cancer detection pipeline. This review seeks to facilitate further interdisciplinary research in early renal cancer detection by summarising our current knowledge across AI, radiology, and oncology and suggesting useful directions for future novel work. Initially, this review discusses existing approaches in automated renal cancer diagnosis, and methods across broader AI research, to summarise the existing state of AI cancer analysis. Then, this review matches these methods to the unique constraints of early renal cancer detection and proposes promising directions for future research that may enable AI-based early renal cancer detection via CT screening. The primary targets of this review are clinicians with an interest in AI and data scientists with an interest in the early detection of cancer.

Domestic camels (Camelus bactrianus, the Bactrian camel; and Camelus dromedarius, the dromedary) are pseudo-ruminant herbivores kept as livestock in rural, inhospitable regions (cold deserts and dry steppes of Asia, arid to semi-arid regions of Africa, western and central Asia). Their close contact with humans makes them a potential reservoir for zoonotic parasite infections, as has been suggested for human balantidiasis. However, there is confusion about the ciliate species that infects camels: Infundibulorium cameli was originally described in dromedaries, but this name has almost never been used and most authors identified their findings as Balantioides coli and, to a lesser extent, Buxtonella sulcata, a cattle ciliate. To clarify the taxonomic status of the parasite and the corresponding zoonotic significance for camels, we performed morphological characterization of cysts and genetic analysis (SSU-rDNA and ITS markers) of B. coli-like isolates from Bactrian camels from Bulgaria and from dromedaries from Spain and the United Arab Emirates. Our results indicate that the camel ciliate is not B. coli, nor is it B. sulcata, but is a different species that should be placed in the same genus as the latter. Thus, camels are not a reservoir for human balantidiasis. Although the correct genus name would be Infundibulorium according to the principle of priority, this would lead to confusion since this name has almost fallen into disuse since its initial description, but Buxtonella is almost universally used by researchers and veterinarians for the cattle ciliate. We therefore propose to apply the reversal of precedence and use Buxtonella as the valid genus name. Consequently, we propose Buxtonella cameli n.comb. as the name for the camel ciliate.
