ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND: The glandular trichomes of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) can efficiently produce secondary metabolites. They act as natural bioreactors, and their natural products function to protect plants against insect-pests and pathogens and are also components of industrial chemicals. To clarify the molecular mechanisms of tobacco glandular trichome development and secondary metabolic regulation, glandular trichomes and glandless trichomes, as well as other different developmental tissues, were used for RNA sequencing and analysis. RESULTS: By comparing glandless and glandular trichomes with other tissues, we obtained differentially expressed genes. They were obviously enriched in KEGG pathways, such as cutin, suberine, and wax biosynthesis, flavonoid and isoflavonoid biosynthesis, terpenoid biosynthesis, and plant-pathogen interaction. In particular, the expression levels of genes related to the terpenoid, flavonoid, and wax biosynthesis pathway mainly showed down-regulation in glandless trichomes, implying that they lack the capability to synthesize certain exudate compounds. Among the differentially expressed genes, 234 transcription factors were found, including AP2-ERFs, MYBs, bHLHs, WRKYs, Homeoboxes (HD-ZIP), and C2H2-ZFs. These transcription factor and genes that highly expressed in trichomes or specially expressed in GT or GLT. Following the overexpression of R2R3-MYB transcription factor Nitab4.5_0011760g0030.1 in tobacco, an increase in the number of branched glandular trichomes was observed. CONCLUSIONS: Our data provide comprehensive gene expression information at the transcriptional level and an understanding of the regulatory pathways involved in glandular trichome development and secondary metabolism.

We experimentally establish a 3 × 3 cross-shaped micro-ring resonator (MRR) array-based photonic multiplexing architecture relying on silicon photonics to achieve parallel edge extraction operations in images for photonic convolution neural networks. The main mathematical operations involved are convolution. Precisely, a faster convolutional calculation speed of up to four times is achieved by extracting four feature maps simultaneously with the same photonic hardware's structure and power consumption, where a maximum computility of 0.742â TOPS at an energy cost of 48.6â mW and a convolution accuracy of 95.1% is achieved in an MRR array chip. In particular, our experimental results reveal that this system using parallel edge extraction operators instead of universal operators can improve the imaging recognition accuracy for CIFAR-10 dataset by 6.2% within the same computing time, reaching a maximum of 78.7%. This work presents high scalability and efficiency of parallel edge extraction chips, furnishing a novel, to the best of our knowledge, approach to boost photonic computing speed.
ABSTRACT
Optical image encryption has long been an important concept in the fields of photonic network processing and communication. Here, we propose a convolution-like operation-based optical image encryption algorithm exploiting a silicon photonic multiplexing architecture to achieve content security. Particularly, the encryption process is completed in a 3 × 3 cross-shaped photonic micro-ring resonator (MRR) array on chip. For the first time, to the best of our knowledge, this algorithm encodes information in an integrated intensity modulation, effectively reducing the encoding difficulty. Moreover, the high reliability and scalability of optical encryption are ensured using both linear and nonlinear operations on photonic chips according to characteristics of MRRs. As the encryption and decryption experiments show, the image restoration accuracy of our optical encryption algorithm exceeds 99% under real system noise at the pixel level, indicating its noise-robust property. Meanwhile, the peak signal-to-noise ratios of the restored and encrypted images are >60 and <15â dB, respectively, revealing both the high accuracy of the restored image and the small correlation between the encrypted and original images. This work adds to the rapidly expanding field of optical image encryption on photonic chips.
ABSTRACT
Nitrous oxide (N2O) has a detrimental impact on the greenhouse effect, and its efficient catalytic decomposition at low temperatures remains challenging. Herein, the cobalt-based high-entropy oxide with a spinel-type structure (Co-HEO) is successfully fabricated via a facile coprecipitation method for N2O catalytic decomposition. The obtained Co-HEO catalyst displays more remarkable catalytic performance and higher thermal stability compared with single and binary Co-based oxides, as the temperature of 90% N2O decomposition (T90) is 356 °C. A series of characterization results reveal that the synergistic effect of multiple elements enhances the reducibility and augments oxygen vacancy in the high-entropy system, thus boosting the activity of the Co-HEO catalyst. Moreover, density functional theory (DFT) calculations and the temperature-programmed surface reaction (TPSR) with isotope labeling demonstrate that N2O decomposition on the Co-HEO catalyst follows the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) mechanism with the promotion of abundant oxygen vacancies. This work provides a fundamental understanding of the synergistic catalytic effect in N2O decomposition and paves the way for the novel environmental catalytic applications of HEO.

The adsorption and activation of pollutant molecules and oxygen play a critical role in the oxidation reaction of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In this study, superior adsorption and activation ability was achieved by modulating the interaction between Pt nanoparticles (NPs) and UiO-66 (U6) through the spatial position effect. Pt@U6 exhibits excellent activity in toluene, acetone, propane, and aldehyde oxidation reactions. Spectroscopic studies, 16O2/18O2 kinetic isotopic experiments, and density functional theory (DFT) results jointly reveal that the encapsulated Pt NPs of Pt@U6 possess higher electron density and d-band center, which is conducive for the adsorption and dissociation of oxygen. The toluene oxidation reaction and DFT results indicate that Pt@U6 is more favorable to activate the C-H of toluene and the CâC of maleic anhydride, while Pt/U6 with lower electron density and d-band center exhibits a higher oxygen dissociation temperature and higher reactant activation energy barriers. This study provides a deep insight into the architecture-performance relation of Pt-based catalysts for the catalytic oxidation of VOCs.

Three undescribed (1-3) and nine known (4-12) platanosides were isolated and characterized from a bioactive extract of the May leaves of Platanus × acerifolia that initially showed inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus. Targeted compound mining was guided by an LC-MS/MS-based molecular ion networking (MoIN) strategy combined with conventional isolation procedures from a unique geographic location. The novel structures were mainly determined by 2D NMR and computational (NMR/ECD calculations) methods. Compound 1 is a rare acylated kaempferol rhamnoside possessing a truxinate unit. 6 (Z,E-platanoside) and 7 (E,E-platanoside) were confirmed to have remarkable inhibitory effects against both methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MIC: ≤ 16 µg/mL) and glycopeptide-resistant Enterococcus faecium (MIC: ≤ 1 µg/mL). These platanosides were subjected to docking analyses against FabI (enoyl-ACP reductase) and PBP1/2 (penicillin binding protein), both of which are pivotal enzymes governing bacterial growth but not found in the human host. The results showed that 6 and 7 displayed superior binding affinities towards FabI and PBP2. Moreover, surface plasmon resonance studies on the interaction of 1/7 and FabI revealed that 7 has a higher affinity (KD = 1.72 µM), which further supports the above in vitro data and is thus expected to be a novel anti-antibacterial drug lead.

BACKGROUND: This study assessed the impact of pressure-controlled ventilation (PCV) focusing on end-inspiratory flow rate on the incidence of postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) and inflammation levels in patients undergoing spinal surgery in the prone position. METHODS: A total of 187 patients who underwent posterior spinal surgery were enrolled and randomly divided into 3 groups: 61 in the volume-controlled ventilation (VCV) group (group V), 62 in the PCV-volume-guaranteed (VG) group (group P1), and 64 in the PCV-VG end-expiratory zero flow rate group (group P2). Indicators including tidal volume (VT), peak airway pressure (Ppeak), and dynamic lung compliance (Cdyn) were recorded. The Ppeak, Cdyn, PETCO2, and oxygenation index (PaO2/FiO2) after intubation (T0), after prone position (T1), 60 min after prone position (T2), and after supine position at the end of surgery (T3) of the three groups were collected. RESULTS: In the within-group comparison, compared with T0, Ppeak increased at T1 - 2 in groups V and P1 (P < 0.01), whereas it decreased at T1 - 3 in group P2 (P < 0.01). Cdyn decreased at T1 - 2 and PaO2/FiO2 increased at T1 - 3 in all three groups (P < 0.01), and PaO2/FiO2 increased at T1 - 3 (P < 0.01). Compared with group V, Ppeak decreased at T0 - 3 in group P1 (P < 0.01) and at T1 - 3 in group P2 (P < 0.01), while Cdyn increased at T0 - 3 in groups P1 and P2 (P < 0.01). Compared with group P1, Ppeak was elevated at T0 (P < 0.01) and decreased at T1 - 3 (P < 0.05), and Cdyn was elevated at T0 - 3 in group P2 (P < 0.01). The total incidence of PPCs in group P2 was lower than that in group V (P < 0.01). Compared with the preoperative period, serum interleukin 6 (IL-6) and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were increased at 24 and 72 h after surgery in group V (P < 0.01), whereas that was increased at 24 h after surgery in group P1 and group P2 (P < 0.01). Compared with group V, serum IL-6 and CRP levels were reduced at 24 h after surgery in groups P1 and P2 (P < 0.01 or < 0.05). CONCLUSION: In patients undergoing spinal surgery in the prone position, PCV-VG targeting an end-inspiratory zero flow rate lowers the incidence of PPCs and inflammation levels.

A previously undescribed triterpenoid (fortunefuroic acid J, 1) was isolated from the endangered conifer Keteleeria hainanensis, along with 20 other known terpenoids. Compound 1 is characterized by an unusual 3,4-seco-9ßH-lanost-3-oic acid motif, featuring a rare furoic acid moiety in its lateral chain. The structure elucidation of this compound was achieved through a combination of spectroscopic and computational methods. The C-15 epimers of 15-methoxypinusolidic acid (15R-8 and 15S-9) were successfully separated and identified for the first time. Compound 1 demonstrated dual inhibitory effects against ATP-citrate lyase (ACL, IC50: 0.92â µM) and acetyl-CoA carboxylase 1 (ACC1, IC50: 10.76â µM). Compounds 2 and 11 exclusively inhibited ACL, exhibiting IC50 values of 2.64 and 6.35â µM, respectively. Compound 1 is classified among the fortunefuroic acid-type compounds, previously isolated from K. fortunei, distinguished by the presence of a rare furoic acid moiety in their lateral chain. The chemotaxonomic significance of the 9ßH-lanost-26-oic acids in Keteleeria was briefly discussed. These findings highlight the importance of conserving plant species diversity, thereby enhancing the exploration of structurally diverse compounds and potential avenues for developing new therapeutics targeting ACL/ACC1-associated diseases.
ABSTRACT
Taste sensors with an allostery approach have been studied to detect non-charged bitter substances, such as xanthine derivatives, used in foods (e.g., caffeine) or pharmaceuticals (e.g., etofylline). In this study, the authors modified a taste sensor with 3-bromo-2,6-dihydroxybenzoic acid and used it in conjunction with sensory tests to assess the bitterness of non-charged pharmaceuticals with xanthine scaffolds (i.e., acefylline and doxofylline), as well as allopurinol, an analogue of hypoxanthine. The results show that the sensor was able to differentiate between different levels of sample bitterness. For instance, when assessing a 30 mM sample solution, the sensor response to acefylline was 34.24 mV, which corresponded to the highest level of bitterness (τ = 3.50), while the response to allopurinol was lowest at 2.72 mV, corresponding to relatively weaker bitterness (τ = 0.50). Additionally, this study extended the application of the sensor to detect pentoxifylline, an active pharmaceutical ingredient in pediatric medicines. These results underscore the taste sensor's value as an additional tool for early-stage assessment and prediction of bitterness in non-charged pharmaceuticals.

Bazi Bushen, a Chinese-patented drug with the function of relieving fatigue and delaying ageing, has been proven effective for extenuating skin senescence. To investigate the potential mechanism, senescence-accelerated mouse prone 6 (SAMP6) was intragastrically administered with Bazi Bushen for 9 weeks to induce skin homeostasis. Skin homeostasis is important in mitigating skin senescence, and it is related to many factors such as oxidative stress, SASP, apoptosis, autophagy and stem cell. In our study, skin damage in SAMP6 mice was observed using HE, Masson and SA-ß-gal staining. The content of hydroxyproline and the activities of SOD, MDA, GSH-PX and T-AOC in the skin were measured using commercial assay kits. The level of SASP factors (IL-6, IL-1ß, TNF-α, MMP2 and MMP9) in skin were measured using ELISA kits. The protein expressions of p16, p21, p53, Bax, Bcl-2, Cleaved caspase-3, LC3, p62, Beclin1, OCT4, SOX2 and NANOG were measured by western blotting. The expression of ITGA6 and COL17A1 was measured by immunofluorescence staining and western blotting. Our findings demonstrated that Bazi Bushen alleviated skin senescence by orchestrating skin homeostasis, reducing the level of oxidative stress and the expression of SASP, regulating the balance of apoptosis and autophagy and enhancing the protein expressions of ITGA6 and COL17A1 to improve skin structure in SAMP6 mice. This study indicated that Bazi Bushen could serve as a potential therapy for alleviating skin senescence.

Dual single atoms catalysts have promising application in bifunctional electrocatalysis due to their synergistic effect. However, how to balance the competition between rate-limiting steps (RDSs) of reversible oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and fully expose the active centers by reasonable structure design remain enormous challenges. Herein, Fe/N4 and Ni/N4 sites separated on different sides of the carbon nanosheets with Janus structure (FeNijns /NC) is synthesized by layer-by-layer assembly method. Experiments and calculations reveal that the side of Fe/N4 is beneficial to oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the Ni/N4 side is preferred to OER. Such Janus structure can take full advantage of two separate-sides of carbon nanosheets and balance the competition of RDSs during ORR and OER. FeNijns /NC possesses superior ORR and OER activity with ORR half-wave potential of 0.92 V and OER overpotential of 440 mV at J = 10 mA cm-2 . Benefiting from the excellent bifunctional activities, FeNijns /NC assembled aqueous Zn-air battery (ZAB) demonstrates better maximum power density, and long-term stability (140 h) than Pt/C+RuO2 catalyst. It also reveals superior flexibility and stability in solid-state ZAB. This work brings a novel perspective for rational design and understanding of the catalytic mechanisms of dual single atom catalysts.
ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND: Mpox is an emerging infectious disease that is now a global hazard. The strategies for preventing and controlling mpox should be further investigated in terms of transmission characteristics, infection risk among different populations, and ideal therapeutic approaches. METHODS: A multi-group dynamic model was used to quantify the transmissibility of mpox. We further analyzed the transmission risk from men who have sex with men (MSM) to non-MSM and evaluated the effects of three intervention measures, including community-based prevention, early detection, and vaccination. RESULTS: The median value of effective reproduction number (Reff) and probability of contact via a single contact (q) among MSM worldwide is 3.11 (interquartile range [IQR]: 2.82-5.57) and 2.15% (IQR: 1.95-3.84%). We found that the cumulative incidence rate of non-MSM is much lower than that of MSM (< 1/2048) when the possibility of infection (including the percentage of high-risk behaviors of contact degree [C] and q) was lowered to less than 1 in 100,000. When comparing the three intervention measures, if we want to control the cumulative incidence rate to 5.96 × 10-8 we need to increase the vaccine coverage to 81% or reduce the transmission rate factor (Cq) to 70% or shorten the transmission period to 74%. CONCLUSIONS: Mpox has high transmissibility in MSM, which required minimize the risk of infection and exposure to high-risk populations. Community prevention and control is the top priority of interventions to contain the spread of mpox.

A preliminary phytochemical investigation on the 90% MeOH extract from the twigs and needles of the vulnerable conifer Keteleeria fortunei led to the isolation and characterization of 17 structurally diverse triterpen-26-oic acids, including nine previously undescribed ones (fortunefuroic acids A-I, 1-9) featuring a rare furoic acid moiety in the lateral chain. Among them, 1-5 are uncommon 9ßH-lanostane-type triterpenoic acids. Friedo-rearranged triterpenoids 6 and 7 feature a unique 17,14-friedo-lanostane skeleton, whereas 9 possesses a rare 17,13-friedo-cycloartane-type framework. Their structures and absolute configurations were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic (e.g., detailed 2D NMR) and computational (NMR/ECD) calculations and the modified Mosher's method. In addition, the absolute structure of compound 1 was ascertained by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Fortunefuroic acids B (2), G (7), and I (9), along with isomangiferolic acid (12) and 3α,27-dihydroxycycloart-24E-en-26-oic acid (14), exhibited dual inhibitory effects against the adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-citrate lyase (ACL, IC50s: 5.7-11.4 µM) and acetyl-CoA carboxylase 1 (ACC1, IC50s: 7.5-10.5 µM), both of which are key enzymes for glycolipid metabolism. The interactions of the bioactive triterpenoids with both enzymes were examined by molecular docking studies. The above findings reveal the important role of protecting plant species diversity in support of chemical diversity and potential sources of new therapeutics for ACL-/ACC1-associated diseases.

One-pot synthesized twin perovskite oxide composite of BaCe0.5Fe0.5O3- δ (BCF), comprising cubic and orthorhombic perovskite phases, shows triple-conducting properties for promising solid oxide electrochemical cells. Phase composition evolution of BCF under various conditions was systematically investigated, revealing that the cubic perovskite phase could be fully/partially reduced into the orthorhombic phase under certain conditions. The reduction happened between the two phases at the interface, leading to the microstructure change. As a result, the corresponding apparent conducting properties also changed due to the difference between predominant conduction properties for each phase. Based on the revealed phase composition, microstructure, and electrochemical properties changes, a deep understanding of BCF's application in different conditions (oxidizing atmospheres, reducing/oxidizing gradients, cathodic conditions, and anodic conditions) was achieved. Triple-conducting property (H+/O2-/e-), fast open-circuit voltage response (â¼16-â¼470 mV) for gradients change, and improved single-cell performance (â¼31% lower polarization resistance at 600°C) were comprehensively demonstrated. Besides, the performance was analyzed under anodic conditions, which showed that the microstructure and phase change significantly affected the anodic behavior.

A novel and efficient palladium-catalyzed regioselective and stereodivergent ring-closing reaction of aminoenynes with aldehydes and boronic acids or hydrosilane is developed. This three-component reaction allows for the modular synthesis of a series of exocyclic 1,3-dienes bearing 5- to 8-membered saturated N-heterocycles. The reactions utilize a simple Pd-catalyst and work with broad range of aminoenynes, aldehydes and organometallic reagents under mild reaction conditions. The products represent useful intermediates for chemical synthesis due to the versatility of the conjugated diene. Preliminary mechanistic details of the method are also revealed.

Electrically accelerated self-healable poly(ionic liquids) copolymers that exhibit resistor-capacitor (RC) circuit properties are developed. At low alternating current (AC) frequencies these materials behave as a resistor (R), whereas at higher frequencies as a capacitor (C). These properties are attributed to a combination of dipolar and electrostatic interactions in (1-[(2-methacryloyloxy)ethyl]-3-butylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethyl-sulfonyl)imide) copolymerized with methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomers to form p(MEBIm-TSFI/MMA)] copolymers. When the monomer molar ratio (MEBIm-TSFI:MMA) is 40/60, these copolymers are capable of undergoing multiple damage-repair cycles and self-healing is accelerated by the application of alternating 1.0-4.0 V electric field (EF). Self-healing in the absence of EFs is facilitated by van der Waals (vdW) interactions, but the application of AC EF induces back and forth movement of charges against the opposing force that result in dithering of electrostatic dipoles giving rise to interchain physical crosslinks. Electrostatic inter- and intrachain interactions facilitated by copolymerization of ionic liquid monomers with typically dielectric acrylic-based monomers result in enhanced cohesive energy densities that accelerate the recovery of vdW forces facilitating self-healing. Incorporating ionic liquids into commodity polymers offers promising uses as green conducting solid polyelectrolytes in self-healable energy storage, energy-harvesting devices, and many other applications.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is highly prevalent and associated with the elevated risks of cardiovascular diseases, dementia, and physical disabilities among adults. Although the correlation between bilirubin and hypertension has been reported, the observation in quinquagenarian population is scarce. We aimed to examine bilirubin-hypertension association in Guankou Ageing Cohort Study. METHODS: Participants ≥ 55 years were recruited and their questionnaires and physical examination data were collected. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and Cox proportional hazards regression were implemented to assess the hypertension risk. The non-liner dose-response relationships of bilirubin-hypertension were determined by restricted cubic spline (RCS) models. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and multiple factors analysis (MFA) were performed to evaluate the predictive abilities. RESULTS: 1881 eligible participants (male 43.75%, female 56.25%) with the median age of 61.00 (59.00-66.00) were included. The hazard ratio (HR, 95% CI) of serum total bilirubin (STB) and unconjugated bilirubin (UCB) were 1.03 (1.01-1.05) and 1.05 (1.03-1.07), while conjugated bilirubin (CB) showed a weak protective effect with the HR of 0.96 (0.92-0.99), and the associations remained significant in all models. RCS analyses further indicated the similar bidirectional effects of STB and UCB with the cut-off of 12.17 µmol/L and 8.59 µmol/L, while CB exhibited inverse bidirectional dose-response relationship with a cut-off of 3.47 µmol/L. ROC curves and MFA showed baseline STB combined with age, BMI, and waist circumference could well discriminate the low and high of hypertension risk. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggested the higher levels of total and unconjugated bilirubin were hazardous factors of hypertension, while an inverse effect presented when more bilirubin was conjugated.

A preliminary phytochemical investigation on the MeOH extract of the twigs and needles of Pseudotsuga gaussenii (a 'vulnerable' plant endemic to China) led to the isolation and characterization of 25 structurally diverse mono- and dimeric triterpenoids. 19 of them are previously undescribed, including eight cucurbitane-type triterpenoids (gaussenols A-H, 1-8, resp.), one serratene-type triterpene (gaussenol I, 9), and 10 triterpenic dimers (gaussenols J-S, 10-19, resp.). Their chemical structures were elucidated by means of spectroscopic data, some chemical transformations, the modified Mosher's method, and single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Compound 9 is the first 13R diastereoisomeric serratene-type triterpenoid derivative from nature. The unprecedented dimeric triterpenoids are constructed either through ester linkage (10-18) or via ether bond (19) among the side chains of same or different types of triterpenoid skeletons (e.g., cucurbitane-type, lanostane-type, and/or cycloartane-type). Compounds 9, 15, 21, and 25 exhibited inhibitory effects against the human protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B, a potential drug target for the treatment of type-II diabetes and obesity), with IC50 values of 3.1, 8.6, 9.0, and 5.6 µM, respectively. The interactions of the bioactive compounds with PTP1B were thereafter performed by employing molecular docking studies, with binding affinities ranging from - 6.9 to - 7.3 kcal/mol. The above findings could reveal the important role of protecting plant species diversity in support of chemical diversity and potential sources of new therapeutics.

BACKGROUND: There is still a relatively serious disease burden of infectious diseases and the warning time for different infectious diseases before implementation of interventions is important. The logistic differential equation models can be used for predicting early warning of infectious diseases. The aim of this study is to compare the disease fitting effects of the logistic differential equation (LDE) model and the generalized logistic differential equation (GLDE) model for the first time using data on multiple infectious diseases in Jilin Province and to calculate the early warning signals for different types of infectious diseases using these two models in Jilin Province to solve the disease early warning schedule for Jilin Province throughout the year. METHODS: Collecting the incidence of 22 infectious diseases in Jilin Province, China. The LDE and GLDE models were used to calculate the recommended warning week (RWW), the epidemic acceleration week (EAW) and warning removed week (WRW) for acute infectious diseases with seasonality, respectively. RESULTS: Five diseases were selected for analysis based on screening principles: hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), shigellosis, mumps, Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD), and scarlet fever. The GLDE model fitted the above diseases better (0.80 ≤ R2 ≤ 0.94, P < 0. 005) than the LDE model. The estimated warning durations (per year) of the LDE model for the above diseases were: weeks 12-23 and 40-50; weeks 20-36; weeks 15-24 and 43-52; weeks 26-34; and weeks 16-25 and 41-50. While the durations of early warning (per year) estimated by the GLDE model were: weeks 7-24 and 36-51; weeks 13-37; weeks 11-26 and 39-54; weeks 23-35; and weeks 12-26 and 40-50. CONCLUSIONS: Compared to the LDE model, the GLDE model provides a better fit to the actual disease incidence data. The RWW appeared to be earlier when estimated with the GLDE model than the LDE model. In addition, the WRW estimated with the GLDE model were more lagged and had a longer warning time.

The emerging issue of microplastic pollution of agricultural soils derives from the intensive utilization of plastic mulching film. Although surface runoff may transport microplastic off-site, infiltration may also facilitate microplastic transport from surface soil to deeper depths. Microplastic comprises a relatively new category of soil contaminants, whose transport in the soil has not yet been widely studied. In this study, we investigated microplastic transport from contaminated surface soil (50 g kg-1) driven by irrigation, from permanent wilting point to saturation, and developed an empirical model to characterize the resulting accumulation of microplastic along soil profile. A soil column experiment was conducted under various treatments: the control, 1, 2 and 4 runs of irrigation. Soil samples were collected from inside and outside of soil cracks (if present) in each soil layer (0-2 cm (source layer), 2-5 cm, 5-10 cm, 10-20 cm, 20-30 cm, 30-40 cm, 40-50 cm). The results showed that with increasing irrigation runs, microplastic in the source soil layer decreased, while microplastic contents in deeper soil depths increased significantly (p < 0.05), varying from 7.03 g kg-1 in 2-5 cm to 0.29 g kg-1 in 40-50 cm soil. The microplastic content detected in soil cracks was 1.3-17.8 times higher than that detected in the soil matrix at similar depths, indicating that the transported microplastic is prone to be enriched in soil cracks. In addition, the total amount of transported microplastic increased 1.5 times after four irrigation runs, and the variations were significantly observed especially at deeper soil depths. Based on correlation analyses, data-fitted empirical models that relate cumulative microplastic to the depth of soil layer and irrigation runs indicate that irrigation-facilitated microplastic transport could be well-characterized (R2 >0.92). Further research is needed to develop an physical-based model in order to assess microplastic migration risks driven by irrigation and other agricultural management practices.
