RESUMEN

Pores with undulating opening diameters have emerged as an analytical tool enhancing the speed of resistive-pulse experiments, with a potential to simultaneously characterize size and mechanical properties of translocating objects. In this work, we present a detailed study of the characteristics of resistive-pulses of charged and uncharged polymer particles in pores with different aspect ratios and pore topography. Although no external pressure difference was applied, our experiments and modeling indicated the existence of local pressure drops, which modified axial and radial velocities of the solution. As a consequence of the complex velocity profiles, pores with undulating pore diameter and low-aspect ratio exhibited large dispersion of the translocation times. Distribution of the pulse amplitude, which is a measure of the object size, was not significantly affected by the pore topography. The importance of tuning pore geometry for the application in resistive-sensing and multipronged characterization of physical properties of translocating objects is discussed.

RESUMEN

Since two gap superconductivity was discovered in MgB2, research on multigap superconductors has attracted increasing attention because of its intriguing fundamental physics. In MgB2, the Mg atom donates two electrons to the borophene layer, resulting in a stronger gap from the σ band and a weaker gap from the π bond. First-principles calculations demonstrate that the two gap anisotropic superconductivity strongly enhances the transition temperature of MgB2 in comparison with that given by the isotropic model. In this work, we report a three-band (B-σ, B-π, and La-d) two-gap superconductor LaB2 with very high Tc = 30 K by solving the fully anisotropic Migdal-Eliashberg equation. Because of the σ and π-d hybridization on the Fermi surface, the electron-phonon coupling constant λ = 1.5 is significantly larger than the λ = 0.7 of MgB2. Our work paves a new route to enhance the electron-phonon coupling strength of multigap superconductors with d orbitals. On the other hand, our analysis reveals that LaB2 belongs to the weak topological semimetal category, leading to a possible topological superconductor with the highest Tc to date. Moreover, upon applying pressure and/or doping, the topology is tunable between weak and strong with Tc varying from 15 to 30 K, opening up a flexible platform for manipulating topological superconductors.

RESUMEN

Using low-energy electron diffraction and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we investigated the lattice and electronic structures of the Pb(111) surface upon the adsorption of Au atoms at the low temperature T = 40 K. Unlike earlier results showing the formation of PbAu-alloy layers at room temperature, we found that Au atoms form a ultra-thin superstructure, Au/Pb(111)-3 × 3, on top of the Pb(111) surface. Moreover, three surface-state bands, S1, S2, and S3, are induced within and immediately adjacent to the Pb bulk projected band gap centered at the surface zone boundary [Formula: see text] at the energies of - 0.02, - 1.05, and - 2.56 eV, respectively. First-principles calculation based on Au/Pb(111)-3 × 3 confirms the measured surface-state bands among which the most interesting are the S1 and S3 surface states. They are derived from surface resonances in Pb(111). Moreover, S1, which disperses across Fermi level, exhibits a large anisotropic Rashba splitting with α of 1.0 and 3.54 eVÅ in the two symmetry directions centered at [Formula: see text]. The corresponding Rashba splitting of S1 band in Cu/Pb(111)-3 × 3 and Ag/Pb(111)-3 × 3 were calculated for comparison.

RESUMEN

Plumbene, with a structure similar to graphene, is expected to possess a strong spin-orbit coupling and thus enhances its superconducting critical temperature (Tc ). In this work, a buckled plumbene-Au Kagome superstructure grown by depositing Au on Pb(111) is investigated. The superconducting gap monitored by temperature-dependent scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy shows that the buckled plumbene-Au Kagome superstructure not only has an enhanced Tc with respect to that of a monolayer Pb but also possesses a higher value than what owned by a bulk Pb substrate. By combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with density functional theory, the monolayer Au-intercalated low-buckled plumbene sandwiched between the top Au Kagome layer and the bottom Pb(111) substrate is confirmed and the electron-phonon coupling-enhanced superconductivity is revealed. This work demonstrates that a buckled plumbene-Au Kagome superstructure can enhance superconducting Tc and Rashba effect, effectively triggering the novel properties of a plumbene.

RESUMEN

The topological phase transition and exotic quasiparticles in materials have attracted much attention because of their potential in spintronics and mimic of elementary particles. Especially, great research interest has been paid to search for the Weyl fermions in solid-state physics. By using first-principles calculations, we predict that the multinary semiconductor alloy TlCd2Te4 exhibits threefold fermions and nodal-line fermions, which are protected by the S4 improper rotational symmetry. Moreover, owing to the lack of inversion and mirror symmetries, the threefold fermions split into Weyl fermions when the spin-orbit coupling is included. The chiral charge of Weyl points and the Z2 time-reversal topological invariant are investigated. The topological surface states, spin texture, and electron-phonon coupling analysis are presented. Our study demonstrates TlCd2Te4 as a good platform to understand topological phase transitions as well as possible coexistance of topological Weyl semimetal and superconductivity in one single material.

RESUMEN

Magnetic two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals materials have attracted tremendous attention because of their high potential in spintronics. In particular, the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect in magnetic 2D layers shows a very promising prospect for hosting Majorana zero modes at the topologically protected edge states in proximity to superconductors. However, the QAH effect has not yet been experimentally realized in monolayer systems to date. In this work, we study the electronic structures and topological properties of the 2D ferromagnetic transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMD) monolayer 1T-VSe2 by first-principles calculations with the Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof (HSE) functional. We find that the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) opens a continuous band gap at the magnetic Weyl-like crossing point hosting the quantum anomalous Hall effect with Chern number C=2. Moreover, we demonstrate the topologically protected edge states and intrinsic (spin) Hall conductivity in this magnetic 2D TMD system. Our results indicate that 1T-VSe2 monolayer serves as a stoichiometric quantum anomalous Hall material.

RESUMEN

Excessive phosphorus in water is the primary culprit for eutrophication, which causes approximately $2.2 billion annual economic loss in the United States. This study demonstrates a phosphate-selective sustainable method by adopting Garcinia subelliptica leaves as a natural bio-template, where MgMn-layered double hydroxide (MgMn-LDH) and graphene oxide (GO) can be grown in situ to obtain L-GO/MgMn-LDH. After calcination, the composite shows a hierarchical porous structure and selective recognition of phosphate, which achieves significantly high and recyclable selective phosphate adsorption capacity and desorption rate of 244.08 mg-P g-1 and 85.8%, respectively. The detail variation of LDHs during calcination has been observed via in situ transmission electron microscope (TEM). Moreover, the roles in facilitating phosphate adsorption and antimicrobial ability of chemical constituents in Garcinia subelliptica leaves, biflavonoids, and triterpenoids have been investigated. These results indicate the proposed bio-templated adsorbent is practical and eco-friendly for phosphorus sustainability in commercial wastewater treatment.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to characterize the awake EEG features of patients with SCN1A-positive Dravet syndrome. METHODS: Between January 2002 and December 2012, clinical data of 37 SCN1A-positive Dravet syndrome patients were collected. The first interictal awake EEG features, hot water bath test induced ictal seizure patterns and the concomitant EEG results, as well as follow-up interictal awake EEG recordings were analyzed. RESULTS: Thirty-seven interictal awake EEG recordings showed 43.2% had normal features, 43.2% had nonspecific findings, and 13.5% had abnormal epileptiform discharges. Ictal pleomorphic seizure types with a median number of three were recorded in 26 patients. In total, 42.3% exhibited myoclonic seizures as their first recognizable seizure type with simultaneous EEG findings characterized by generalized or focal spikes, generalized 2-3.5Hz spike and wave discharges, or generalized 2-3Hz high voltage slow waves, and 30.8% manifested atypical absence seizures with concomitant EEG results showing generalized or focal spikes. Fifteen patients had 45 follow-up interictal awake EEGs during a period of six years. The follow-up awake EEG recordings revealed 42.2% had normal features, 42.2% showed nonspecific findings, and 15.6% disclosed epileptiform discharges. CONCLUSIONS: The initial and follow-up interictal awake EEG recordings showed normal results and nonspecific features in the majority of SCN1A-positive Dravet syndrome patients. Ictal electroencephalographic seizure types and concomitant EEG pictures were quite diverse and polymorphous. A low detection rate of interictal epileptiform abnormalities at awake stage might make patient management more challenging.

RESUMEN

This paper presents a novel technique for the integration of small CMOS chips into a large area substrate. A key component of the technique is the CMOS chip based self-aligned masking. This allows for the fabrication of sockets in wafers that are at most 5 µm larger than the chip on each side. The chip and the large area substrate are bonded onto a carrier such that the top surfaces of the two components are flush. The unique features of this technique enable the integration of macroscale components, such as leads and microfluidics. Furthermore, the integration process allows for MEMS micromachining after CMOS die-wafer integration. To demonstrate the capabilities of the proposed technology, a low-power integrated potentiostat chip for biosensing implemented in the AMI 0.5 µm CMOS technology is integrated in a silicon substrate. The horizontal gap and the vertical displacement between the chip and the large area substrate measured after the integration were 4 µm and 0.5 µm, respectively. A number of 104 interconnects are patterned with high-precision alignment. Electrical measurements have shown that the functionality of the chip is not affected by the integration process.

RESUMEN

The purpose of this study is to describe the characteristics of epileptic seizures in infants and children with mitochondrial diseases. From 1984 to December 2010, data from 46 of 76 patients diagnosed as having mitochondrial diseases with epileptic seizures were reviewed. Age at seizure onset, epileptic phenotypes, electroencephalogram findings, magnetic resonance imaging features, and treatment outcome in patients with syndromic or nonsyndromic mitochondrial diseases were analyzed. Thirty (65%) of 46 patients manifested seizures before the age of 1 year; 43% had Leigh syndrome and 53% had nonsyndromic mitochondrial diseases. Twenty-eight (61%) of 46 patients exhibited seizures as the manifesting complaint. Nineteen (68%) of 28 patients had nonsyndromic mitochondrial diseases. The most frequently observed electroencephalogram finding was background slow activity (28/46; 61%) in both groups. The most common cortical abnormality relevant to clinical seizures was diffuse brain atrophy on the brain magnetic resonance imaging (26/45; 58%), which was commonly observed in patients with nonsyndromic mitochondrial diseases (16/26; 62%). Despite treatment, 49% of patients experienced less than 50% seizure reduction rate, 77% of whom had nonsyndromic mitochondrial diseases. Leigh syndrome and nonsyndromic mitochondrial diseases often manifest as infantile seizures. Epileptic seizure as the initial complaint, diffuse brain atrophy, and refractory epilepsy were more common in patients with nonsyndromic mitochondrial diseases.
