RESUMEN

Triketones, derived chemically from a natural phytotoxin (leptospermone), are a good example of allelochemicals as lead molecules for the development of new herbicides. Targeting a new and key enzyme involved in carotenoid biosynthesis, these latest-generation herbicides (sulcotrione, mesotrione and tembotrione) were designed to be eco-friendly and commercialized fifteen-twenty years ago. The mechanisms controlling their fate in different ecological niches as well as their toxicity and impact on different organisms or ecosystems are still under investigation. This review combines an overview of the results published in the literature on ß-triketones and more specifically, on the commercially-available herbicides and includes new results obtained in our interdisciplinary study aiming to understand all the processes involved (i) in their transfer from the soil to the connected aquatic compartments, (ii) in their transformation by photochemical and biological mechanisms but also to evaluate (iii) the impacts of the parent molecules and their transformation products on various target and non-target organisms (aquatic microorganisms, plants, soil microbial communities). Analysis of all the data on the fate and impact of these molecules, used pure, as formulation or in cocktails, give an overall guide for the assessment of their environmental risks.

Despite progress in diagnosis and staging, pancreatic cancer still has a poor prognosis and it remains difficult to predict duration of survival in advanced pancreatic cancer. Nutritional decline, or cachexia, is a contributory factor to decreased survival in advanced pancreatic carcinoma, and it has been demonstrated that proinflammatory cytokines give rise to cachexia. Interferon (IFN)-gamma is a proinflammatory cytokine whose administration increases survival outcomes in a variety of cancers. The human IFN-gamma gene has a variable length CA-repeat sequence, the length that has been shown to influence IFN-gamma production. The current study was performed to ascertain whether polymorphisms of the IFN-gamma gene would influence survival of individuals with advanced pancreatic cancer. The study demonstrated that the presence of allele 2 (12 CA repeats) was consistently associated with increased duration of survival after confirmation of nonresectable pancreatic carcinoma. We therefore propose that the presence of allele 2 may be a useful marker for patient outcome.

RESUMEN

Mg-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) intercalated with glycinate anions was synthesized through co-precipitation and exfoliated in formamide and the single-layer suspension was reacted with an aqueous iron porphyrin (FeTDFSPP) solution. The new composite was characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, UV-vis, FTIR, and electron paramagnetic spectroscopies and thermal analyses (simultaneous TG/DSC). The analyses demonstrated that glycinate anions continue to be intercalated and the anionic iron porphyrin is adsorbed at the surface of the layered double hydroxide crystals.
