RESUMEN

The final fate of massive stars, and the nature of the compact remnants they leave behind (black holes and neutron stars), are open questions in astrophysics. Many massive stars are stripped of their outer hydrogen envelopes as they evolve. Such Wolf-Rayet stars1 emit strong and rapidly expanding winds with speeds greater than 1,000 kilometres per second. A fraction of this population is also helium-depleted, with spectra dominated by highly ionized emission lines of carbon and oxygen (types WC/WO). Evidence indicates that the most commonly observed supernova explosions that lack hydrogen and helium (types Ib/Ic) cannot result from massive WC/WO stars2,3, leading some to suggest that most such stars collapse directly into black holes without a visible supernova explosion4. Here we report observations of SN 2019hgp, beginning about a day after the explosion. Its short rise time and rapid decline place it among an emerging population of rapidly evolving transients5-8. Spectroscopy reveals a rich set of emission lines indicating that the explosion occurred within a nebula composed of carbon, oxygen and neon. Narrow absorption features show that this material is expanding at high velocities (greater than 1,500 kilometres per second), requiring a compact progenitor. Our observations are consistent with an explosion of a massive WC/WO star, and suggest that massive Wolf-Rayet stars may be the progenitors of some rapidly evolving transients.

Low-complexity nucleotide repeat sequences, which are implicated in several neurological disorders, undergo liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) provided the number of repeat units, n, exceeds a critical value. Here, we establish a link between the folding landscapes of the monomers of trinucleotide repeats and their propensity to self-associate. Simulations using a coarse-grained Self-Organized Polymer (SOP) model for (CAG)n repeats in monovalent salt solutions reproduce experimentally measured melting temperatures, which are available only for small n. By extending the simulations to large n, we show that the free-energy gap, ΔGS, between the ground state (GS) and slipped hairpin (SH) states is a predictor of aggregation propensity. The GS for even n is a perfect hairpin (PH), whereas it is a SH when n is odd. The value of ΔGS (zero for odd n) is larger for even n than for odd n. As a result, the rate of dimer formation is slower in (CAG)30 relative to (CAG)31, thus linking ΔGS to RNA-RNA association. The yield of the dimer decreases dramatically, compared to the wild type, in mutant sequences in which the population of the SH decreases substantially. Association between RNA chains is preceded by a transition to the SH even if the GS is a PH. The finding that the excitation spectrum-which depends on the exact sequence, n, and ionic conditions-is a predictor of self-association should also hold for other RNAs (mRNA for example) that undergo LLPS.

Machine learning (ML) algorithms are crucial within the realm of healthcare applications. However, a comprehensive assessment of the effectiveness of regression algorithms in predicting alterations in lifting movement patterns has not been conducted. This research represents a pilot investigation using regression-based machine learning techniques to forecast alterations in trunk, hip, and knee movements subsequent to a 12-week strength training for people who have low back pain (LBP). The system uses a feature extraction algorithm to calculate the range of motion in the sagittal plane for the knee, trunk, and hip and 12 different regression machine learning algorithms. The results show that Ensemble Tree with LSBoost demonstrated the utmost accuracy in prognosticating trunk movement. Meanwhile, the Ensemble Tree approach, specifically LSBoost, exhibited the highest predictive precision for hip movement. The Gaussian regression with the kernel chosen as exponential returned the highest prediction accuracy for knee movement. These regression models hold the potential to significantly enhance the precision of visualisation of the treatment output for individuals afflicted with LBP.

Nonclassical secreted proteins (NSPs) refer to a group of proteins released into the extracellular environment under the facilitation of different biological transporting pathways apart from the Sec/Tat system. As experimental determination of NSPs is often costly and requires skilled handling techniques, computational approaches are necessary. In this study, we introduce iNSP-GCAAP, a computational prediction framework, to identify NSPs. We propose using global composition of a customized set of amino acid properties to encode sequence data and use the random forest (RF) algorithm for classification. We used the training dataset introduced by Zhang et al. (Bioinformatics, 36(3), 704-712, 2020) to develop our model and test it with the independent test set in the same study. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve on that test set was 0.9256, which outperformed other state-of-the-art methods using the same datasets. Our framework is also deployed as a user-friendly web-based application to support the research community to predict NSPs.

In 2019, a community-based, cross-sectional carriage survey and a seroprevalence survey of 1,216 persons 1-55 years of age were conducted in rural Vietnam to investigate the mechanism of diphtheria outbreaks. Seroprevalence was further compared with that of an urban area that had no cases reported for the past decade. Carriage prevalence was 1.4%. The highest prevalence, 4.5%, was observed for children 1-5 years of age. Twenty-seven asymptomatic Coerynebacterium diphtheriae carriers were identified; 9 carriers had tox gene-bearing strains, and 3 had nontoxigenic tox gene-bearing strains. Child malnutrition was associated with low levels of diphtheria toxoid IgG, which might have subsequently increased child carriage prevalence. Different immunity patterns in the 2 populations suggested that the low immunity among children caused by low vaccination coverage increased transmission, resulting in symptomatic infections at school-going age, when vaccine-induced immunity waned most. A school-entry booster dose and improved infant vaccination coverage are recommended to control transmissions.

Purple-pericarp sweetcorn accessions, derived from crossing purple-pericarp maize with white shrunken2 sweetcorn, were assessed for differences in anthocyanin profile at both sweetcorn eating stage and at full kernel maturity. The 'Tim1' sweetcorn line developed a similar total anthocyanin concentration to its 'Costa Rica' parent when assessed at sweetcorn-eating stage. At full maturity it surpassed the purple maize parent, but this was mainly due to the presence of starch diluting the anthocyanin concentration of the latter. The anthocyanin/colour relationship was affected by both total anthocyanin concentration and the ratio of cyanidin- to pelargonidin-based anthocyanins. Malonylation of anthocyanins was also found to vary and did not appear to be linked with either cyanidin:pelargonidin ratio or total anthocyanin concentration. In addition, anthocyanin synthesis was affected by kernel maturity at harvest, with colour development increasing in conjunction with a progression of anthocyanin development across the kernel surface. Pigmentation was present in the aleurone, pericarp and vitreous endosperm of kernels of the purple-pericarp maize parent and purple-pericarp sweetcorn accessions when fully mature, but pigmentation was only apparent in the pericarp at sweetcorn-eating stage. Importantly for consumers, anthocyanin pigmentation covered almost the entire kernel surface at sweetcorn-eating stage.

World-wide, political polarization continues unabated, undermining collective decision-making ability. In this issue, we have examined polarization dynamics using a (mean-field) model borrowed from statistical physics, assuming that each individual interacted with each of the others. We use the model to generate scenarios of polarization trends in time in the USA and explore ways to reduce it, as measured by a polarization index that we propose. Here, we extend our work using a more realistic assumption that individuals interact only with "neighbors" (short-range interactions). We use agent-based Monte Carlo simulations to generate polarization scenarios, considering again three USA political groups: Democrats, Republicans, and Independents. We find that mean-field and Monte Carlo simulation results are quite similar. The model can be applied to other political systems with similar polarization dynamics.

OBJECTIVE: Few support services and caregiving interventions exist to support family caregivers in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). This paper presents exploratory analyses of outcomes of Resources for Enhancing Alzheimer's Caregiver Health in Vietnam (REACH VN). METHODS: A cluster randomized controlled trial (RCT) was conducted in Soc Son, a semi-rural area in Hanoi. Nine clusters with 60 caregivers were randomized to either an enhanced control group or REACH VN, an in-home, multicomponent, family caregiver support intervention delivered over two to three months. Outcomes were assessed at baseline and three months. RESULTS: Caregivers in the intervention group experienced a significantly greater reduction in frustration levels compared to those in the control group. There were differences in other outcomes (e.g., care recipient problem behaviors and associated caregiver bother) favoring the intervention condition that did not reach statistical significance. CONCLUSION: We found additional evidence that REACH VN is a promising intervention to improve family caregiver outcomes in Vietnam.

RNA molecules cannot fold in the absence of counterions. Experiments are typically performed in the presence of monovalent and divalent cations. How to treat the impact of a solution containing a mixture of both ion types on RNA folding has remained a challenging problem for decades. By exploiting the large concentration difference between divalent and monovalent ions used in experiments, we develop a theory based on the reference interaction site model (RISM), which allows us to treat divalent cations explicitly while keeping the implicit screening effect due to monovalent ions. Our theory captures both the inner shell and outer shell coordination of divalent cations to phosphate groups, which we demonstrate is crucial for an accurate calculation of RNA folding thermodynamics. The RISM theory for ion-phosphate interactions when combined with simulations based on a transferable coarse-grained model allows us to predict accurately the folding of several RNA molecules in a mixture containing monovalent and divalent ions. The calculated folding free energies and ion-preferential coefficients for RNA molecules (pseudoknots, a fragment of the rRNA, and the aptamer domain of the adenine riboswitch) are in excellent agreement with experiments over a wide range of monovalent and divalent ion concentrations. Because the theory is general, it can be readily used to investigate ion and sequence effects on DNA properties.

OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to evaluate the indications and describe the aortic valve reconstruction techniques by Ozaki's procedure in Vietnam and report mid-term outcomes of this technique in Vietnam. METHODS: Between June 2017 and December 2019, 72 patients diagnosed with isolated aortic valve disease, with a mean age of 52.9 (19-79 years old), and a male:female ratio of 3:1 underwent aortic valve reconstruction surgery by Ozaki's technique at Cardiovascular Center, E Hospital, Vietnam. RESULTS: The aortic valve diseases consisted of aortic stenosis (42%), aortic regurgitation (28%), and a combination of both (30%). In addition, the proportion of aortic valves with bicuspid morphology and small annulus (≤21 mm) was 28% and 38.9%, respectively. The mean aortic cross-clamp time was 106 ± 13.8 min, mean cardiopulmonary bypass time was 136.7 ± 18.5 min, and 2.8% of all patients required conversion to prosthetic valve replacement surgery. The mean follow-up time was 26.4 months (12-42 months), the survival rate was 95.8%, the reoperation rate was 2.8%, and rate of postoperative moderate or higher aortic valve regurgitation was 4.2%. Postoperative valvular hemodynamics was favorable, with a peak pressure gradient of 16.1 mmHg and an effective orifice area index of 2.3 cm2 . CONCLUSIONS: This procedure was safe and effective, with favorable valvular hemodynamics and a low rate of valvular degeneration. However, more long-term follow-up data are needed.

This paper proposes an innovative methodology for finding how many lifting techniques people with chronic low back pain (CLBP) can demonstrate with camera data collected from 115 participants. The system employs a feature extraction algorithm to calculate the knee, trunk and hip range of motion in the sagittal plane, Ward's method, a combination of K-means and Ensemble clustering method for classification algorithm, and Bayesian neural network to validate the result of Ward's method and the combination of K-means and Ensemble clustering method. The classification results and effect size show that Ward clustering is the optimal method where precision and recall percentages of all clusters are above 90, and the overall accuracy of the Bayesian Neural Network is 97.9%. The statistical analysis reported a significant difference in the range of motion of the knee, hip and trunk between each cluster, F (9, 1136) = 195.67, p < 0.0001. The results of this study suggest that there are four different lifting techniques in people with CLBP. Additionally, the results show that even though the clusters demonstrated similar pain levels, one of the clusters, which uses the least amount of trunk and the most knee movement, demonstrates the lowest pain self-efficacy.

Rapidly increasing political polarization threatens democracies around the world. Scholars from several disciplines are assessing and modeling polarization antecedents, processes, and consequences. Social systems are complex and networked. Their constant shifting hinders attempts to trace causes of observed trends, predict their consequences, or mitigate them. We propose an equivalent-neighbor model of polarization dynamics. Using statistical physics techniques, we generate anticipatory scenarios and examine whether leadership and/or external events alleviate or exacerbate polarization. We consider three highly polarized USA groups: Democrats, Republicans, and Independents. We assume that in each group, each individual has a political stance s ranging between left and right. We quantify the noise in this system as a "social temperature" T. Using energy E, we describe individuals' interactions in time within their own group and with individuals of the other groups. It depends on the stance s as well as on three intra-group and six inter-group coupling parameters. We compute the probability distributions of stances at any time using the Boltzmann probability weight exp(-E/T). We generate average group-stance scenarios in time and explore whether concerted interventions or unexpected shocks can alter them. The results inform on the perils of continuing the current polarization trends, as well as on possibilities of changing course.

Genome-wide analysis of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) strains is essential to better understand infectivity and virulence and to track coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases and outbreaks. We performed whole-genome sequencing of 27 SARS-CoV-2 strains isolated between January 2020 and April 2020. A total of 54 mutations in different genomic regions was found. The D614G mutation, first detected in March 2020, was identified in 18 strains and was more likely associated with a lower cycle threshold (<25) in real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction diagnostic tests than the original D614 (prevalence ratio = 2.75; 95% confidence interval, 1.19-6.38). The integration of sequencing and epidemiological data suggests that SARS-CoV-2 transmission in both quarantine areas and in the community in Vietnam occur at the beginning of the epidemic although the country implemented strict quarantine quite early, with strict contact tracing, and testing. These findings provide insights into the nature of the epidemic, as well as shape strategies for COVID-19 prevention and control in Vietnam.

During 2015-2018, seven schools in rural Vietnam experienced diphtheria outbreaks. Multilocus sequence types were the same within schools but differed between schools. Low vaccine coverage and crowded dormitories might have contributed to the outbreaks. Authorities should consider administering routine vaccinations and booster doses for students entering the school system.

AIMS: To evaluate the effects of 8 weeks' administration of exenatide (EXE) once weekly on gastric emptying of solids and liquids (using the "gold standard" technique, scintigraphy), glucose absorption and postprandial glycaemia in healthy people. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 32 healthy participants were randomized to receive either EXE once weekly (2 mg/wk subcutaneously; six men, 10 women, mean age 59.9 ± 0.9 years, mean body mass index [BMI] 29.6 ± 0.6 kg/m2 ) or matching placebo (PBO; six men, 10 women, mean age 60.6 ± 1.2 years, mean BMI 29.5 ± 1.0 kg/m2 ) for 8 weeks. Gastric emptying, nausea (visual analogue scale), and plasma glucose, insulin, C-peptide and glucagon were measured for 120 min after a solid/liquid meal, comprising 100 g ground beef (radiolabelled with 20 MBq 99m Tc-sulphur colloid) and 150 mL 10% glucose (radiolabelled with 7 MBq 67 Ga-EDTA), and containing 5 g 3-O-methyl-glucose (3-OMG) as a marker of glucose absorption, at baseline and after 8 weeks' treatment. RESULTS: The study treatments were well tolerated. Scores for nausea were consistently low, with no difference between the EXE once weekly and PBO groups. EXE once weekly slowed gastric emptying of solids (area under the curve [AUC]0-120min : P < 0.05) and liquids (AUC0-120min : P = 0.01) substantially, and attenuated glucose absorption (3-OMG incremental AUC [iAUC]0-30min : P = 0.001) and the postprandial rise in plasma glucose (iAUC0-30min : P = 0.008). Plasma glucagon at 2 h was reduced by EXE once weekly (P = 0.001). The magnitude of the reduction in plasma glucose at t = 30 min from baseline to 8 weeks with EXE once weekly was related inversely to the 50% emptying time of the glucose drink (r = -0.55, P = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS: In healthy participants, 8 weeks' administration of the "long-acting" glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist EXE, slowed gastric emptying of solids and liquids substantially, with consequent reductions in glucose absorption and postprandial glycaemia.

We present our research on the application of statistical physics techniques to multi-group social conflicts. We identify real conflict situations of which the characteristics correspond to the model. We offer realistic assumptions about conflict behaviors that get factored into model-generated scenarios. The scenarios can inform conflict research and strategies for conflict management. We discuss model applications to two- and three-group conflicts. We identify chaotic time evolution of mean attitudes and the occurrence of strange attractors. We examine the role that the range of interactions plays with respect to the occurrence of chaotic behavior.

We present in this paper the effects of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) magneto-electric coupling between ferroelectric and magnetic interface atomic layers in a superlattice formed by alternate magnetic and ferroelectric films. We consider two cases: magnetic and ferroelectric films have the simple cubic lattice and the triangular lattice. In the two cases, magnetic films have Heisenberg spins interacting with each other via an exchange J and a DM interaction with the ferroelectric interface. The electrical polarizations of ±1 are assumed for the ferroelectric films. We determine the ground-state (GS) spin configuration in the magnetic film and study the phase transition in each case. In the simple cubic lattice case, in zero field, the GS is periodically non collinear (helical structure) and in an applied field H perpendicular to the layers, it shows the existence of skyrmions at the interface. Using the Green's function method we study the spin waves (SW) excited in a monolayer and also in a bilayer sandwiched between ferroelectric films, in zero field. We show that the DM interaction strongly affects the long-wave length SW mode. We calculate also the magnetization at low temperatures. We use next Monte Carlo simulations to calculate various physical quantities at finite temperatures such as the critical temperature, the layer magnetization and the layer polarization, as functions of the magneto-electric DM coupling and the applied magnetic field. Phase transition to the disordered phase is studied. In the case of the triangular lattice, we show the formation of skyrmions even in zero field and a skyrmion crystal in an applied field when the interface coupling between the ferroelectric film and the ferromagnetic film is rather strong. The skyrmion crystal is stable in a large region of the external magnetic field. The phase transition is studied.

We study the nature of the smectic-isotropic phase transition using a mobile 6-state Potts model. Each Potts state represents a molecular orientation. We show that with the choice of an appropriate microscopic Hamiltonian describing the interaction between individual molecules modeled by a mobile 6-state Potts spins, we observe the smectic phase dynamically formed when we cool the molecules from the isotropic phase to low temperatures (T). In order to elucidate the order of the transition and the low-T properties, we use the high-performance Wang-Landau flat energy-histogram technique. We show that the smectic phase goes to the liquid (isotropic) phase by melting/evaporating layer by layer starting from the film surface with increasing T. At a higher T, the whole remaining layers become orientationally disordered. The melting of each layer is characterized by a peak of the specific heat. Such a succession of partial transitions cannot be seen by the Metropolis algorithm. The successive layer meltings/evaporations at low T are found to have a first-order character by examining the energy histogram. AIM: To evaluate the effects of the prandial glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist lixisenatide on gastric emptying and blood pressure (BP) and superior mesenteric artery (SMA) blood flow, and the glycaemic responses to a 75-g oral glucose load in healthy people and those with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifteen healthy participants (nine men, six women; mean ± SEM age 67.2 ± 2.3 years) and 15 participants with T2DM (nine men, six women; mean ± SEM age 61.9 ± 2.3 years) underwent measurement of gastric emptying, BP, SMA flow and plasma glucose 180 minutes after a radiolabelled 75-g glucose drink on two separate days. All participants received lixisenatide (10 µg subcutaneously) or placebo in a randomized, double-blind, crossover fashion 30 minutes before the glucose drink. RESULTS: Lixisenatide slowed gastric emptying (retention at 120 minutes, P < 0.01), attenuated the rise in SMA flow (P < 0.01) and markedly attenuated the decrease in systolic BP (area under the curve [AUC] 0-120 minutes, P < 0.001) compared to placebo in healthy participants and those with T2DM. Plasma glucose (incremental AUC 0-120 minutes) was greater in participants with T2DM (P < 0.005) than in healthy participants, and lower after lixisenatide in both groups (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: In healthy participants and those with T2DM, the marked slowing of gastric emptying of glucose induced by lixisenatide was associated with attenuation of the increments in glycaemia and SMA flow and decrease in systolic BP. Accordingly, lixisenatide may be useful in the management of postprandial hypotension.

In this review, we outline some principal theoretical knowledge of the properties of frustrated spin systems and magnetic thin films. The two points we would like to emphasize: (i) the physics in low dimensions where exact solutions can be obtained; (ii) the physics at phase boundaries where interesting phenomena can occur due to competing interactions of the two phases around the boundary. This competition causes a frustration. We will concentrate our attention on magnetic thin films and phenomena occurring near the boundary of two phases of different symmetries. Two-dimensional (2D) systems are in fact the limiting case of thin films with a monolayer. Naturally, we will treat this case at the beginning. We begin by defining the frustration and giving examples of frustrated 2D Ising systems that we can exactly solve by transforming them into vertex models. We will show that these simple systems already contain most of the striking features of frustrated systems such as the high degeneracy of the ground state (GS), many phases in the GS phase diagram in the space of interaction parameters, the reentrance occurring near the boundaries of these phases, the disorder lines in the paramagnetic phase, and the partial disorder coexisting with the order at equilibrium. Thin films are then presented with different aspects: surface elementary excitations (surface spin waves), surface phase transition, and criticality. Several examples are shown and discussed. New results on skyrmions in thin films and superlattices are also displayed. By the examples presented in this review we show that the frustration when combined with the surface effect in low dimensions gives rise to striking phenomena observed in particular near the phase boundaries.
