RESUMEN

Weyl fermions have been observed as three-dimensional, gapless topological excitations in weakly correlated, inversion-symmetry-breaking semimetals. However, their realization in spontaneously time-reversal-symmetry-breaking phases of strongly correlated materials has so far remained hypothetical. Here, we report experimental evidence for magnetic Weyl fermions in Mn3Sn, a non-collinear antiferromagnet that exhibits a large anomalous Hall effect, even at room temperature. Detailed comparison between angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveals significant bandwidth renormalization and damping effects due to the strong correlation among Mn 3d electrons. Magnetotransport measurements provide strong evidence for the chiral anomaly of Weyl fermions-namely, the emergence of positive magnetoconductance only in the presence of parallel electric and magnetic fields. Since weak magnetic fields (approximately 10 mT) are adequate to control the distribution of Weyl points and the large fictitious fields (equivalent to approximately a few hundred T) produced by them in momentum space, our discovery lays the foundation for a new field of science and technology involving the magnetic Weyl excitations of strongly correlated electron systems such as Mn3Sn.

We present an angle-resolved photoemission study of the electronic structure of the three-dimensional pyrochlore iridate Nd_{2}Ir_{2}O_{7} through its magnetic metal-insulator transition. Our data reveal that metallic Nd_{2}Ir_{2}O_{7} has a quadratic band, touching the Fermi level at the Γ point, similar to that of Pr_{2}Ir_{2}O_{7}. The Fermi node state is, therefore, a common feature of the metallic phase of the pyrochlore iridates. Upon cooling below the transition temperature, this compound exhibits a gap opening with an energy shift of quasiparticle peaks like a band gap insulator. The quasiparticle peaks are strongly suppressed, however, with further decrease of temperature, and eventually vanish at the lowest temperature, leaving a nondispersive flat band lacking long-lived electrons. We thereby identify a remarkable crossover from Slater to Mott insulators with decreasing temperature. These observations explain the puzzling absence of Weyl points in this material, despite its proximity to the zero temperature metal-insulator transition.

Most invasive fungal infections such as candidemia are frequent in patients with hematologic malignancies. We measured cytokines/chemokines (IL-6, IL-8, monocytic chemoattractant protein 1, RANTES and epithelial neutrophil-activating peptide 78), soluble molecules (sFas, sE-selectin and soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule 1) and platelet activation markers (soluble CD40 ligand, sP-selectin and platelet-derived microparticles) in patients with hematologic malignancies under prophylactic treatment with an antifungal drug (fosfluconazole). We classified patients into 2 groups by the level of beta-D-glucan. The level of C-reactive protein was higher in the high beta-D-glucan group (>5 pg/ml) than in the low beta-D-glucan group. However, there were no differences in the levels of other parameters (peripheral blood cells, glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase, glutamic-pyruvic transaminase, lactate dehydrogenase, blood urea nitrogen and creatinine). Patients in the high beta-D-glucan group exhibited a significant elevation of several chemokines, soluble molecules and platelet activation markers compared with those in the low beta-D-glucan group, but the levels of IL-8, monocytic chemoattractant protein 1 and sFas did not differ significantly. The levels of C-reactive protein and IL-6 increased significantly after 1 or 2 weeks on fosfluconazole in both groups. In contrast, the high beta-D-glucan group exhibited a significant decrease in chemokines, soluble markers and platelet-derived microparticles compared with the low beta-D-glucan group after treatment with fosfluconazole, although the patients in the low beta-D-glucan group exhibited no significant changes. Furthermore, the levels of RANTES, epithelial neutrophil-activating peptide 78, soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 and sE-selectin correlated positively with platelet-derived microparticles in the high beta-D-glucan group. These findings suggest that fungal infection may modulate the vascular events in which some platelet-related chemokines are involved.

The effects of treatment with pitavastatin on inflammatory and platelet activation markers and adiponectin in 117 patients with hyperlipidemia were investigated to determine whether pitavastatin may prevent the progression of atherosclerotic changes in hyperlipidemic patients. Adiponectin levels prior to pitavastatin treatment in hyperlipidemic patients with and without diabetes were lower than levels in normolipidemic controls. Both total cholesterol and the low-density lipoprotein cholesterol decreased significantly after pitavastatin administration. Additionally, hyperlipidemic patients with or without type 2 diabetes exhibited a significant increase in adiponectin levels 6 months after pitavastatin treatment (diabetes: 3.52 +/- 0.80 vs. 4.52 +/- 0.71 microg/ml, p < 0.001; no diabetes: 3.48 +/- 0.71 vs. 4.23 +/- 0.82 microg/ml, p < 0.05). However, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, platelet-derived microparticle and soluble P-selectin did not exhibit any differences before or after pitavastatin administration. Levels of adiponectin significantly increased after pitavastatin administration in the group of lower soluble P-selectin (soluble P-selectin before pitavastatin treatment <200 ng/ml). These results suggest that pitavastatin possesses an adiponectin-increasing effect in patients with hyperlipidemia and this effect is influenced by intensive platelet activation.

Nifedipine, a dihydropyridine calcium antagonist, improves endothelial function in patients with hypercholesterolaemia by enhancing nitric oxide (NO) activity, and increases endothelial NO bioavailability by antioxidant mechanisms. We administered a long-acting nifedipine formulation (controlled release (CR) nifedipine: 20 mg/day) to hypertensive patients for 6 months. There were no other changes of drug treatment during therapy with CR nifedipine. Clinical and biochemical data obtained before and after CR nifedipine administration were compared. All markers were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay. The levels of soluble markers (soluble CD40 ligand, soluble P-selectin, and soluble E-selectin), microparticles (MP) (platelet-derived MP, monocyte-derived MP, and endothelial cell-derived MP), and adiponectin differed between the control group and the hypertension group. The levels of these markers were also different in hypertensive patients with and without type 2 diabetes compared with the control group. In the hypertensive patients with type 2 diabetes, all markers except adiponectin decreased significantly after 3 months of CR nifedipine treatment. In contrast, markers were unchanged in the hypertensive patients without type 2 diabetes. Adiponectin was increased after 6 months of CR nifedipine treatment in hypertensive patients with type 2 diabetes. The effects of CR nifedipine on platelet/monocyte activation and adiponectin levels demonstrated in the present study indicate the potential effectiveness of calcium antagonist therapy for hypertensive patients with type 2 diabetes.

RESUMEN

We present a new compact instrument designed for scanning transmission X-ray microscopy. It has piezo-driven linear stages, making it small and light. Optical components from the virtual source point to the detector are located on a single optical table, resulting in a portable instrument that can be operated at a general-purpose spectroscopy beamline without requiring any major reconstruction. Careful consideration has been given to solving the vibration problem common to high-resolution microscopy, so as not to affect the spatial resolution determined by the Fresnel zone plate. Results on bacteriogenic iron oxides, single particle aerosols, and rare-earth permanent magnets are presented as examples of its performance under diverse applications.

Strong spin-orbit coupling fosters exotic electronic states such as topological insulators and superconductors, but the combination of strong spin-orbit and strong electron-electron interactions is just beginning to be understood. Central to this emerging area are the 5d transition metal iridium oxides. Here, in the pyrochlore iridate Pr2Ir2O7, we identify a non-trivial state with a single-point Fermi node protected by cubic and time-reversal symmetries, using a combination of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations. Owing to its quadratic dispersion, the unique coincidence of four degenerate states at the Fermi energy, and strong Coulomb interactions, non-Fermi liquid behaviour is predicted, for which we observe some evidence. Our discovery implies that Pr2Ir2O7 is a parent state that can be manipulated to produce other strongly correlated topological phases, such as topological Mott insulator, Weyl semimetal, and quantum spin and anomalous Hall states.

We investigated the relationship between the common cold and restenosis after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in Japanese patients with angina pectoris, because suffering from a common cold during the follow-up period after PCI may be involved in the development of restenosis. In addition, we measured the soluble (s) L-selectin level early after PCI in patients with and without restenosis. The study group included 104 effort angina pectoris patients. We examined whether or not they had had a common cold in the 6 months following angioplasty. Finally, 88 patients, whose common cold status was known, were selected as the study subjects. Twelve patients caught a common cold after PCI. All of these patients were given antibiotics and/or anti-inflammatory agents and recovered within 2 weeks. None had clinically detectable influenza infection. Thirty-three patients suffered from restenosis and 55 did not. There was no significant difference in the restenosis frequency between effort angina pectoris patients with and without a common cold. The sL-selectin level was significantly increased in patients with restenosis early after PCI, whereas in patients without restenosis, sL-selectin remained unchanged. These findings suggest that restenosis development after PCI in patients with effort angina pectoris may involve leukocyte activation early after PCI, while suffering from a common cold during the follow-up period after PCI has no effect.
