RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to examine the correlation between histopathologic and radiographic findings and to discuss the cause of the simple bone cyst. STUDY DESIGN: Histopathologically, we classified 53 simple bone cysts into two types. Type A has a connective tissue membrane and type B has a partially thickened wall with dysplastic bone formation. Radiographically, we evaluated the following: margin, radiolucency, or radiopacity, relationship with tooth apices, bucco-lingual bone expansion, and displacement of the mandibular canal. RESULTS: Bone expansion and radiopacity were closely related to histopathologic findings although there was no correlation between the histopathologic findings and radiographic margin, relationship with tooth apices, and displacement of mandibular canal. Local recurrence was more likely to be observed in patients diagnosed as having type B than type A lesions. CONCLUSIONS: Type A and type B bone cysts may have different causes. Cysts determined radiographically to be radiopaque, those diagnosed as type B histopathologically, and cysts that have been treated surgically should all be followed by radiographic examinations.

RESUMEN

A 59-year-old man with myelodysplastic syndrome exhibited unticaria, dyspnea, fever, and hypotension immediately after the start of platelet concentrate (PC) transfusion on the 15th day of hospitalization. On the 17th and 21st day of hospitalization, the patient exhibited severe unticaria resembling that of erythroderma after the start of PC transfusion. Anti-IgA IgG antibody was detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) on the 28th day of hospitalization. Anti-IgA (purified from pooled human plasma) was detected by Western blotting. The patient's IgA level was normal. No antibodies against HLA or platelet-specific antigens were detected in serum. The patient had no reaction to administration of washed PC. These findings suggest that anti-IgA antibody might have been responsible for the nonhemolytic transfusion reaction in this patient.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: T2 relaxation time is a quantitative MR imaging parameter used to detect degenerated cartilage in the knee and lumbar intervertebral disks. We measured the T2 relaxation time of the articular disk of the temporomandibular joint in patients with temporomandibular disorders and asymptomatic volunteers to demonstrate an association between T2 relaxation time and temporomandibular disorder MR imaging findings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred forty-four patients with temporomandibular disorders and 17 volunteers were enrolled in this study. An 8-echo spin-echo sequence for measuring the T2 relaxation times was performed in the closed mouth position, and the T2 relaxation time of the entire articular disk was measured. Patients were classified according to the articular disk location and function, articular disk configuration, presence of joint effusion, osteoarthritis, and bone marrow abnormalities. RESULTS: The T2 relaxation time of the entire articular disk was 29.3 ± 3.8 ms in the volunteer group and 30.7 ± 5.1 ms in the patient group (P = .177). When subgroups were analyzed, however, the T2 relaxation times of the entire articular disk in the anterior disk displacement without reduction group, the marked or extensive joint effusion group, the osteoarthritis-positive group, and the bone marrow abnormality-positive group were significantly longer than those in the volunteer group (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS: The T2 relaxation times of the articular disk of the temporomandibular joint in patients with progressive temporomandibular disorders were longer than those of healthy volunteers.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to compare the accuracy of contrast-enhanced CT (CECT) and contrast-enhanced MRI (CEMRI) in the detection of perineural spread (PNS) of adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) in the oral and maxillofacial regions. METHODS: This study consisted of 13 ACCs from 13 patients, all of which were histopathologically diagnosed. Both CECT and CEMRI were performed in all patients before the treatment. The images of each patient were retrospectively evaluated for the detection of PNS. The definitions of PNS included abnormal density/signal intensity, contrast enhancement or widening of the pterygopalatine fossa, palatine foramen, incisive canal, mandibular foramen and mandibular canal, and enlargement or excessive contrast enhancement of a nerve. RESULTS: 11 out of 13 cases were proven to exhibit PNS histopathologically. 8 of the 11 cases for which PNS was histopathologically proven exhibited PNS on MR images. Six of the eight cases for which PNS was exhibited on MR images also exhibited PNS on CT images. The sensitivity, specificity and accuracy for the detection of PNS were 55%, 100% and 62% on CT images and 73%, 100% and 77% on MR images, respectively. Although the accuracy of PNS on MR images was slightly superior to that on CT images, there were no statistically significant differences between the detection of PNS on CT images and on MR images. CONCLUSIONS: CT and MR images are equally useful for the detection of PNS of ACC in the oral and maxillofacial regions.

RESUMEN

Twenty-eight species of carboxyethyl germanium sesquioxide (Ge-132) derivatives were examined for their inhibitory effects on enkephalin-degrading enzymes that were purified from monkey brain, the longitudinal muscle layer of bovine small intestine, and human cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). A series of the sulfurized Ge-132 derivatives showed strong inhibition of these purified enzymes. The most effective ones were Ge-014 and Ge-107, which showed IC50 values of 60 and 100 micrograms/ml, respectively, for dipeptidylcarboxypeptidase from the longitudinal muscle layer. They also exhibited inhibitory activity against aminopeptidase from human CSF, the IC50 values being 450 and 440 micrograms/ml, respectively. Furthermore, these compounds showed inhibition of dipeptidylaminopeptidase from monkey brain and the longitudinal muscle layer of bovine small intestine. These compounds are expected to have analgesic effects due to their inhibition of the degradation of endogenous opioid peptides.

RESUMEN

The pulmonary metastasis of Lewis lung carcinoma was strongly blocked by daily intraperitoneal (i.p.) treatment with 0.5 mg of PCAGeS/kg/day for 7 days after tumor implantation. The metastasis-preventive activity of PCAGeS was markedly reduced when mice were treated with carrageenan, a macrophage blocker. On the other hand, treatment with antiasialo GM1 antiserum did not significantly affect the percentage of inhibition of metastasis by the compound. These results suggest that macrophages rather than natural killer (NK) cells play an important role in the suppression of metastasis by PCAGeS. PCAGeS induced tumoristatic and tumoricidal activities in the peritoneal macrophages of mice by oral administration. The activity of NK cells was also augmented by i.p. treatment with the compound. These results suggest that PCAGeS is a useful substance for preventing pulmonary metastasis.

RESUMEN

Long-lived proteins can undergo non-enzymatic glycation to form highly crosslinked structures with characteristic fluorescence during aging and diabetes processes. In this paper, a typical fluorophore, named Maillard reaction product X (MRX), was isolated from the hydrolysate of glycated proteins. MRX could be formed by incubation of bovine serum albumin with glucose, followed by acid hydrolysis. The structure of MRX was determined to be 8-hydroxy-5-methyldihydrothiazolo[3,2-alpha] pyridinium-3-carboxylate. MRX was also found to be formed by the incubation of cysteine and arginine with glucose, followed by hydrolysis. We found the formation of MRX in the recently developed genetically diabetic Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF) rats and compared them with that in the control Long-Evans Tokushima Otsuka (LETO) rats. Significantly higher levels of MRX were observed from the serum (p < 0.005) and urinary protein (p < 0.001) of OLETF rats in comparison with those of LETO rats. MRX must be a potential candidate as a biomarker for hyperglycemia.

RESUMEN

The amino-carbonyl reaction (The Maillard reaction) of bovine lens crystallin, serum albumin or skin collagen with glucose was investigated to find effective means to prevent the formation of Advanced Glycation End Products (AGE) and induce the reversible solubilization of polymerized glycated proteins. The organic germanium compounds (Ge-132, 373, 385), derivatives of amino acids containing germanium as the linker of framework, were combined by the box titration method to determine the dose that would be most effective, compared with Aminoguanidine-HCl (AMG),α-tocopherol (VE), and pirenoxine (Catalin-K, CK). Although AMG suppressed the formation of AGE, effective concentrations were higher than 20 mM. Ge-385, when administered by itself at a low dose, induced the reversible solubilization of AGE made from crystallin, and albumin. The addition of any two reagents such as AMG, VE, CK and Ge-132 or 385 together to proteins lessened the effective range, and the peaks of smaller molecules in the profiles of HPLC and PAGE were quite remarkable. Examination was made of the effects of Ge-132 on the eyes of SAM mice, which show senescence accelerated cataracts at a relatively young age. The prevention of cataract-genesis and induction of reversible transparency of turbid lenses became evident following the administration of Ge-132 to the eyes 4 times a day. The mode of action of organic germanium compounds was demonstrated quite capable of disconnecting the sugar-parts from AGE by decarbonylation, resulting in the formation of glucosone and amino residues, and further leading subsequently to fewer AGE.
