RESUMEN

This study aimed to determine cucumber crop coefficients under different greenhouse microclimatic conditions, parameterizing the Priestley-Taylor reference evapotranspiration model. Crop evapotranspiration was directly measured with the use of lysimeters, and crop coefficients were computed following the two-step climate FAO 56 methodology. Greenhouse compartments (i.e., cooled or uncooled) showed reference evapotranspiration differences of up to 12% in an autumn-winter crop. The results presented cucumber crop coefficient values from the initial to the late-season growth stages from 0.45 to 0.94 depending on the greenhouse climate. Based on the greenhouse hourly microclimatic variation of KC, it is recommended not to apply a KC as a constant for transpiration estimation even at greenhouses located within the same region Regression analysis relating crop coefficients with leaf area revealed very high correlation coefficients for the equations tested. The results indicated that evapotranspiration can be modeled satisfactory based on a significant relationship between crop coefficient and simple measurements of the leaf area index (i.e., KC = 0.447 × LAI).

RESUMEN

Dual-specificity phosphatase 3 (DUSP3), also known as Vaccinia H1-related phosphatase, is a protein tyrosine phosphatase that typically performs its major role in the regulation of multiple cellular functions through the dephosphorylation of its diverse and constantly expanding range of substrates. Many of the substrates described so far as well as alterations in the expression or the activity of DUSP3 itself are associated with the development and progression of various types of neoplasms, indicating that DUSP3 may be an important player in oncogenesis and a promising therapeutic target. This review focuses exclusively on DUSP3's contribution to either benign or malignant melanocytic oncogenesis, as many of the established culprit pathways and mechanisms constitute DUSP3's regulatory targets, attempting to synthesize the current knowledge on the matter. The spectrum of the DUSP3 interactions analysed in this review covers substrates implicated in cellular growth, cell cycle, proliferation, survival, apoptosis, genomic stability/repair, adhesion and migration of tumor melanocytes. Furthermore, the speculations raised, based on the evidence to date, may be considered a fundament for potential research regarding the oncogenesis, evolution, management and therapeutics of melanocytic tumors.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The use of water containing calcium bicarbonate (Ca(HCO3 )2 ) at excessively high concentrations in closed hydroponic crops can cause calcium ion (Ca2+ ) accumulation in the recycled nutrient solution (NS) and concomitantly negatively affect yield and product quality. The aim of the study was to determine maximum Ca2+ concentrations that do not harm the crop and to simulate the pattern of Ca2+ accumulation when the Ca2+ concentration in the irrigation water, and concomitantly in the replenishment nutrient solution (RNS), is excessive. In the current study, irrigation water containing 1.5, 3.0, 4.5 and 6.0 mmol L-1 Ca2+ was used to prepare the RNS supplied to pepper cultivated in a closed hydroponic system. RESULTS: At 1.5 mmol L-1 Ca2+ , no Ca2+ accumulation was observed in the recirculating NS. However, at 3.0, 4.5 and 6.0 mmol L-1 in the irrigation water, the Ca2+ concentration in the recirculating NS, increased by the latter cropping stages to 17, 28 and 37 mmol L-1 , corresponding to 6.4, 9.0 and 10.8 dS m-1 . The accumulation of Ca2+ in the recirculating NS affected both tissue nutrient concentrations and uptake concentrations of Ca2+ , sulphate ion (SO4 2- ) and magnesium ion (Mg2+ ), but this was not the case for nitrogen (N) or potassium ion (K+ ). Growth, yield and plant water uptake were restricted at moderate (3.0 and 4.5 mmol L-1 ) and high (6.0 mmol L-1 ) external Ca2+ levels. CONCLUSION: In soilless pepper crops with zero discharge of fertigation effluents, the Ca2+ concentration in the irrigation water and the RNS should be lower than 3.0 mmol L-1 to avoid yield restrictions due to salinity. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: During the last few decades, greenhouse technology for horticultural crops has focused on retaining optimum conditions within the greenhouse environment that could allow for a compromise between maximum yields and minimum production costs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of three greenhouse covering materials and five harvesting dates on the yield and quality parameters of hydroponically produced tomato fruit, as well as on energy consumption. RESULTS: Plants had a higher growth rate at early stages for S-PE cover material, while differences were minimized at later stages. Tocopherol content was the highest for ID-PE material and harvesting later than 170 days after transplanting (DAT), while sugar content (fructose and glucose) was the highest for S-PE material and 157 DAT. Organic acid content was the highest at early harvestings, especially for 7-PE and S-PE cover materials, while it exhibited decreasing trends at later harvesting dates. Antioxidant properties showed a varied response to cover materials and harvesting dates, while ß-carotene, carotenoids and chlorophylls were the highest for 7-PE material. CONCLUSIONS: The results showed that both cover materials and harvesting date may affect significantly tomato fruit quality, especially sugar and organic acid contents which are associated with fruit taste, as well as tocopherols which contribute to antioxidant properties and pigments that are associated with fruit ripening and earliness of marketable maturity. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To present a case of reactive osteocartilaginous metaplasia (ROCM) in the anterior edentulous mandibular ridge. BACKGROUND: The ROCM secondary to chronic mechanical denture trauma is rare and appears as a focal sometimes painful mass on or near the crest of the edentulous alveolar ridge in long-term denture wearers. The literature review disclosed 24 cases involving more commonly the posterior portion of the mandible. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An 80-year-old female was referred for the evaluation of a painful, submucosal nodule extending into the vestibular mucosa of the anterior edentulous mandibular region. Microscopically, cartilaginous regions exhibiting sparse hyperchromatic or binucleated chondrocytes transitioned into areas of ossification. RESULTS: The diagnosis was ROCM. The presence of osteocartilaginous tissue displaying bizarre histopathological features can create a diagnostic dilemma. CONCLUSION: Complete conservative surgical excision of this lesion has a very good prognosis. Surgical augmentation of the sharp edentulous mandibular ridges might be needed to avoid continuous irritation and possible recurrence.

RESUMEN

Background: Aquaponics is an innovative farming system that combines hydroponics and aquaculture, resulting in the production of both crops and fish. Decoupled aquaponics is a new approach introduced in aquaponics research for the elimination of certain system bottlenecks, specifically targeting the optimization of crops and fish production conditions. The aquaponics-related literature predominantly examines the system's effects on crop productivity, largely overlooking the plant functional responses which underlie growth and yield performance. The aim of the study was the integrated evaluation of basil performance cultivated under coupled and decoupled aquaponic systems compared with a hydroponic one, in terms of growth and functional parameters in a pilot-scale aquaponics greenhouse. Methods: We focused on the efficiency of the photosynthetic process and the state of the photosynthetic machinery, assessed by instantaneous gas exchange measurements as well as photosynthetic light response curves, and in vivo chlorophyll a fluorescence. Light use efficiency was estimated through leaf reflectance determination. Photosynthetic pigments content and leaf nutritional state assessments completed the picture of basil functional responses to the three different treatments/systems. The plant's functional parameters were assessed at 15-day intervals. The experiment lasted for two months and included an intermediate and a final harvest during which several basil growth parameters were determined. Results: Coupled aquaponics resulted in reduced growth, which was mainly ascribed to sub-sufficient leaf nutrient levels, a fact that triggered a series of negative feedbacks on all aspects of their photosynthetic performance. These plants experienced a down-regulation of PSII activity as reflected in the significant decreases of quantum yield and efficiency of electron transport, along with decreased photosynthetic pigments content. On the contrary, decoupled aquaponics favored both growth and photochemistry leading to higher light use efficiency compared with coupled system and hydroponics, yet without significant differences from the latter. Photosynthetic light curves indicated constantly higher photosynthetic capacity of the decoupled aquaponics-treated basil, while also enhanced pigment concentrations were evident. Basil functional responses to the three tested production systems provided insights on the underlying mechanisms of plant performance highlighting key-points for systems optimization. We propose decoupled aquaponics as an effective system that may replace hydroponics supporting high crops productivity. We suggest that future works should focus on the mechanisms involved in crop and fish species function, the elucidation of which would greatly contribute to the optimization of the aquaponics productivity.

RESUMEN

Salivary gland tumors (SGTs) are rare and complex neoplasms characterized by heterogenous histology and clinical behavior as well as resistance to systemic therapy. Tumor etiology is currently under elucidation and an interplay of genetic and epigenetic changes has been proposed to contribute to tumor development. In this work, we investigated epigenetic regulators and histone-modifying factors that may alter gene expression and participate in the pathogenesis of SGT neoplasms. We performed a detailed bioinformatic analysis on a publicly available RNA-seq dataset of 94 ACC tissues supplemented with clinical data and respective controls and generated a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network of chromatin and histone modification factors. A significant upregulation of TP53 and histone-modifying enzymes SUV39H1, EZH2, PRMT1, HDAC8, and KDM5B, along with the upregulation of DNA methyltransferase DNMT3A and ubiquitin ligase UHRF1 mRNA levels, as well as a downregulation of lysine acetyltransferase KAT2B levels, were detected in ACC tissues. The protein expression of p53, SUV39H1, EZH2, and HDAC8 was further validated in SGT tissues along with their functional deposition of the repressive histone marks H3K9me3 and H3K27me3, respectively. Overall, this study is the first to detect a network of interacting proteins affecting chromatin structure and histone modifications in salivary gland tumor cells, further providing mechanistic insights in the molecular profile of SGTs that confer to altered gene expression programs.

RESUMEN

The management of penetrating abdominal trauma has evolved considerably over the last 30 years. The goal of any algorithm for penetrating abdominal trauma should be to identify injuries requiring surgical repair and avoid unnecessary laparotomy with its associated morbidity. We describe a case where the infusion of povidone-iodine (Videne) and air into the wound uncovered the peritoneal breach clinically and guided the radiologist to the site of the internal injury. This case report raises an intriguing possible role for povidone-iodine and air to be used both for wound toilet and to aid identification of occult wound tracks on computed tomography imaging. We advocate the routine use of wound irrigation with a mixture of povidone-iodine and air as described, in a select group of patients, as an adjunct to diagnosis before abdominal computed tomography scanning.

RESUMEN

Greenhouse climate control systems are usually based on greenhouse microclimate settings to exert any control. However, to save energy, water and nutrients, additional parameters related to crop performance and physiology will have to be considered. In addition, detecting crop stress before it is clearly visible by naked eye is an advantage that could aid in microclimate control. In this study, a Machine Learning (ML) model which takes into account microclimate and crop physiological data to detect different types of crop stress was developed and tested. For this purpose, a multi-sensor platform was used to record tomato plant physiological characteristics under different fertigation and air temperature conditions. The innovation of the current model lies in the integration of photosynthesis rate (Ps) values estimated by means of remote sensing using a photochemical reflectance index (PRI). Through this process, the time-series Ps data were combined with crop leaf temperature and microclimate data by means of the ML model. Two different algorithms were evaluated: Gradient Boosting (GB) and MultiLayer perceptron (MLP). Two runs with different structures took place for each algorithm. In RUN 1, there were more feature inputs than the outputs to build a model with high predictive accuracy. However, in order to simplify the process and develop a user-friendly approach, a second, different run was carried out. Thus, in RUN 2, the inputs were fewer than the outputs, and that is why the performance of the model in this case was lower than in the case of RUN 1. Particularly, MLP showed 91% and 83% accuracy in the training sample, and 89% and 82% in testing sample, for RUNs 1 and 2, respectively. GB showed 100% accuracy in the training sample for both runs, and 91% and 83% in testing sample in RUN 1 and RUN 2, respectively. To improve the accuracy of RUN 2, a larger database is required. Both models, however, could easily be incorporated into existing greenhouse climate monitoring and control systems, replacing human experience in detecting greenhouse crop stress conditions.

RESUMEN

Collision tumors, composed of two distinct benign or malignant neoplasms, are rarely reported in the oral cavity. We present a case of a 61-year-old female with an asymptomatic non-demarcated lump on the soft palate of unknown duration. An incisional biopsy revealed the presence of two neoplastic populations, a neurofibroma that was partially infiltrated by a polymorphous adenocarcinoma, low-grade variant. Total surgical excision was performed, with uneventful follow-up period. The development of collision tumors may be incidental, although molecular events may influence the pathogenetic mechanism of the phenomenon.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) in young patients is associated with a poor outcome due to advanced stage at diagnosis and poor differentiation. AIM: The aim of this study is to compare clinicopathological characteristics, overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) of young (≤40 years) and older patients with CRC. METHODS: A total of 2,538 patients including 59 young patients (age ≤40 years) with CRC were identified over 20 years. The clinicopathological variables of young patients were compared with a group of consecutive older patients (n = 416) spanning both decades. Survival analysis was done using Kaplan-Meier, log-rank and Cox regression models. RESULTS: The frequency in young patients increased from 1.4% to 3.0% from first to second decade (overall -2.3%, p = 0.006). There was a higher frequency of tumours with poor differentiation (43% vs. 16%, p = < 0.001), T4 stage (47% vs. 30%, p = 0.005) and vascular invasion (VI; 38% vs. 29%, p = 0.13) in younger group. There was no significant difference in OS (p = 0.116) and DFS (p = 0.261) between the two groups. Node-negative young patients had a significantly better OS (p = 0.046). Young patients with VI had significantly reduced OS (p = 0.043), whereas young patients without VI had significantly better OS (p = 0.012). Multivariate analysis showed T4 status (p = 0.001) and vascular invasion (p = 0.002) as independent prognostic factors for OS and T4 status (p = 0.004) as independent factor influencing DFS. CONCLUSION: The frequency of CRC in young patients increased significantly. Vascular invasion is the single most important prognostic factor in young CRC. Along with vascular invasion, high proportion of T4 status in young patients increases the chances of recurrence and negates any survival advantage in young patients.

RESUMEN

Richter transformation (RT) is a term used to refer to the development of an aggressive lymphoma, usually of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma type, in a patient with a history of chronic lymphocytic leukemia. It may present with heterogeneous manifestations, including the occurrence of tumors at extranodal sites. To date, only 6 cases of RT involving the oral and maxillofacial region have been reported. Here, we present 2 rare cases of lymphoma initially affecting the maxilla and the lower gingiva, respectively, of female patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia and review the English language literature about RT manifesting in the oral and maxillofacial tissues.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to analyze the expression of nuclear receptor interacting protein 1 (NRIP1) and its partner ligand-dependent nuclear receptor co-repressor (LCOR) in endometrioid endometrial cancer and to investigate their association with estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), Ki-67, clinicopathological parameters and patient survival. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Immunohistochemical evaluation was carried out to investigate the subcellular expression of NRIP1 and LCOR in endometrioid endometrial cancer samples. Statistical analysis was used to identify the correlations of NRIP1 and LCOR expression with clinicopathological variables and to estimate the survival rates. RESULTS: Endometrial cancer tissues exhibited higher expression of NRIP1 and LCOR in comparison with the normal tissues. Cytoplasmic LCOR expression was positively associated with ER and PR expression, while cytoplasmic NRIP1 expression was positively associated with ER expression. Moreover, cytoplasmic expression of NRIP1 was positively associated with Ki-67. CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrated that high cytoplasmic expression of LCOR may predict a longer overall survival of patients with endometrioid endometrial cancer. Patients with tumors expressing low levels of LCOR showed a worse survival compared to those expressing high levels.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of three daily fish feeding frequencies, two, four and eight times per day (FF2, FF4, and FF8, respectively) on growth performance of sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax)and lettuce plants (Lactuca sativa) reared in aquaponics. 171 juvenile sea bass with an average body weight of 6.80 ± 0.095 g were used, together with 24 lettuce plants with an average initial height of 11.78 ± 0.074 cm over a 45-day trial period. FF2 fish group showed a significantly lower final weight, weight gain and specific growth rate than the FF4 and FF8 groups. Voluntary feed intake was similar for all the three feeding frequencies treatmens (p > 0.05). No plant mortality was observed during the 45-day study period. All three aquaponic systems resulted in a similar leaf fresh weight and fresh and dry aerial biomass. The results of the present study showed that the FF4 or FF8 feeding frequency contributes to the more efficient utilization of nutrients for better growth of sea bass adapted to fresh water while successfully supporting plant growth to a marketable biomass.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Mucinous adenocarcinoma is a rare neoplasm of the gastrointestinal tract and one of the three major histological subtypes of the primary appendiceal adenocarcinoma. The most common type of presentation is that of acute appendicitis and the diagnosis is usually occurred after appendectomy. The accurate preoperative diagnosis and management of the above condition represents a real challenge when uncommon anatomic anomalies such intestinal malrotation and situs inversus take place. Situs inversus totalis with an incidence of 0.01% is an uncommon condition caused by a single autosomal recessive gene of incomplete penetration in which the major visceral organs are mirrored from their normal positions. CASE PRESENTATION: We present an unusual case of a 59 years old, previously healthy man presented with a left lower quadrant abdominal pain, accompanied with low fever, leukocytosis, anorexia and constipation. A chest radiograph demonstrated dextrocardia with a right side positioned stomach bubble. Both preoperative US and CT scan of the abdomen and pelvis declared situs inversus, with a characteristic thickening in its wall, appendix situated in the left lower quadrant of the abdomen. These findings reached to the diagnosis of acute appendicitis with situs inversus and a standard appendicectomy was performed. Pathologic evaluation established primary mucinous adenocarcinoma of the appendix and three months afterwards the patient underwent a subsequent extended left hemicolectomy. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, the occurrence of primary appendiceal mucinous adenocarcinoma along with situs inversus, definitely accounts as a unique clinical case. Even synchronous manifestation of primary mucinous adenocarcinoma of the appendix and situs inversus totalis represents an unusual anatomo-pathological entity, all physicians should be familiar having the knowledge to make an appropriate and accurate diagnosis that will lead to prompt and correct treatment.

RESUMEN

Insect proof nets are widely used in agriculture as mechanical and physical barriers to regulate pest populations in a greenhouse. However, their integration in the greenhouse ventilation openings is highly associated with the decrease of air flow and the adequate ventilation. Thus, there is need for alternative pest management tools that do not impair adequate ventilation. In the present study, we tested four net formulations of relatively large mesh size coated with SiO2 nanoparticles, namely, ED3, ED3-P, ED5, and ED5-P to evaluate their insecticidal properties against adults of Aphis fabae and Sitophilus oryzae and larvae of Tribolium confusum. ED3 and ED5 nets were coated with SiO2 nanoparticles of different diameter, while in the case of ED3-P and ED5-P, paraffin was added to increase the mass of the deposited particles on the net's surface. In the first series of bioassays, the knockdown and mortality rates of these species were evaluated after exposure to the aforementioned net formulations for 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 60, 90, and 180 min. In the second series of bioassays, knockdown and mortality of these species were recorded after 1, 7, and 10 days of post-exposure to the nets for different time intervals (15, 30, and 60 min). Based on our results, all nets significantly affected A. fabae, since all insects were dead at the 1-day post-exposure period to the silica-treated nets. Conversely, at the same interval, no effect on either S. oryzae adults or T. confusum larvae was observed. However, in the case of S. oryzae, the efficacy of all nets reached 100% 7 days after the exposure, even for adults that had been initially exposed for 15 min to the treated nets. Among the species tested, T. confusum larvae exhibited the lowest mortality rate, which did not exceed 34% at the 10 days of post-exposure interval. Our work underlines the efficacy of treated nets in pest management programs, under different application scenarios, at the pre- and post-harvest stages of agricultural commodities.
