RESUMEN

Conformational changes in bacteriophage tail proteins after heating and ionic strength alteration leading to dissociation of tail sheath have been studied using protein fluorescence, differential scanning microcalorimetry and electron microscopy methods. Autonomous structural changes in tube-baseplate proteins have been revealed. They take place under the same conditions as those which release the bonds holding the sheath protein subunits to those of the tube in isolated sheathed tails. The conformational changes in the tube-baseplates are reversible similarly to the process of assembly and disassembly of the extended sheath. Morphological changes in the tube have been found at the temperature above the transition registered by protein fluorescence but not by calorimetry. This suggests that revealed spectral alterations reflect changes in quaternary structure of tail tube in particular.

RESUMEN

The incidence and prevalence of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyronmonas gingivalis, and Tannerella forsythensis in specimens of subgingival dental deposit were evaluated in 495 residents of St. Petersburg aged 6-82 years. The microorganisms were detected by gene-specific PCR of 16S rDNA. In accordance with age-specific increase in the incidence of gingival diseases, the percentage of samples containing T. forsythensis and P. gingivalis was significantly higher in adult and elderly patients in comparison with adolescents. The presence of T. forsythensis significantly correlated with the presence of gingivitis and dental deposit. In addition, the incidence of T. forsythensis was significantly higher in tobacco smokers. These results attest to a relationship between T. forsythensis infection and more frequent periodontal diseases associated with aging and tobacco smoking.

RESUMEN

A patients is described with a definite mycoplasmal pneumonia, serologically confirmed, complicated by a severe hemolytic anemia with a high titre of cold antibodies and grave thrombophlebitis. The disease had an acute course and terminated in recovery. The case is reported with a view to the relative rarity of the complication, the existence of only single publication in our literature and the undoubted recent higher incidence of mycoplasmal pneumonian determining the practical value of the communication.

RESUMEN

The aim of the present study was to determine the significance of the lymphocyte transformation test with phyto-hemagglutinin in connection with the degree of inflammatory activity and serological changes. Lymphocyte transformation test with phytohemagglutinin was performed on 46 of the patients with rheumatoid arthritis active stage, diagnosed according to the New York criteria. In patients with low and moderate inflammatory activity the lymphocyte transformation test has values close to those of the controls. In patients with high inflammatory activity either low values or considerably higher were established as compared with the control group. The values of the test were proved, through the statistical analysis, to be heterogenous quantities in seropositive and seronegative patients.

RESUMEN

35 patients with classical form of rheumatoid arthritis were treated with Salazopyrin N "Pharmachim" prepared with the basic substance of the firm "AB-Uppsala"--Sweden. Side effects were seen in 9 patients and in 3 of them the treatment had to be discontinued. After a six months course of treatment remission was found in 18 patients (51%), in 8 patients (22.8%) the result was considered "good" with reduction of the inflammatory activity and in the remaining 5 patients there was little or no effect. The results coincide with those of other authors and support the data for the beneficial action of Salazopyrin N as a basic means in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. They also prove that the Bulgarian drug Salazopyrin N is of good quality and can be successfully used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.

RESUMEN

The purpose of the study is to investigate and juxtapose the cytochemical characteristics of ribonucleoproteins (RNP) and deoxyribonucleoproteins (DNP) in the lymphocytes of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), of healthy lymphocytes and lymphocytes blast-transformed by phytohemagglutinins. Significant differences in the staining of lymphocytes for nucleoproteins were established in all 54 patients with RA studied. The unidirectional changes in the morphological form of the staining for RNP and DNP in blast-transformed lymphocytes and lymphocytes in RA is, most likely, in connection with the transition of the latter into active functional state and their participation in the forming of the immune inflammation. No significant difference was established in the dependence on the RA form--sero-positive or sero-negative. Regardless of the negative serological samples in the second form, there were some changes in the lymphocytes--carriers of immune reactions in organism.

RESUMEN

A case of female-patient is reported with Schönlein-Henoch disease together with manifestations for an endo- and extracapillary glomerulonephritis, confirmed by needle biopsy. The latter were manifested 20 days after the disease onset with decreased concentration capacity of the kidneys, diminished clearances of creatinine and urea, a considerable proteinuria, without hyperazotemia, with hypercholesterinemia and hypertension. No essential improvement developed with the treatment with glycocorticoids and indomethacine in the course of four months.

RESUMEN

The markers of granulocyte order non-ferment cation proteins (CP) have pronounced bactericide, vascular-permeable and anticoagulant effect. In connection with the participation of leukocyte ferment and non-ferment systems in the formation of immune inflammations, the cytochemical studies on CP in neutrophil polymorphonuclears in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are of certain importance. A cytochemical method in confirming CP was applied upon smears of peripheral blood of 54 patients with RA and 90 healthy subjects. The results were presented in a mean cytochemical coefficient according to Astaldi and Verga. A significant reduction of CP was established in the leukocytes of patients with RA regardless of the form - sero-negative or sero-positive. Most likely, immune conditioned changes in leukocyte metabolism were present in both forms which no doubt had an effect on their participation in the protective reactions of organism.

RESUMEN

The study was undertaken to assess hemodynamic parameters by Doppler echocardiography in patients with ventricular septal defect (VSD) and pulmonary hypertension. Seventy-two patients aged 5 months to 9 years (mean 2.5 years) who had isolated VSD were examined. The authors conclude that it is possible and necessary to assess hemodynamics in the lesser circulation by using Doppler echocardiography. The method permits monitoring the time course of changes in the right heart, which makes it possible to follow the natural history of disease without applying invasive studies.
