RESUMEN

Conservation enforcement is a direct strategy to combat illegal wildlife trade in open markets. Yet, its large-scale effectiveness has not been widely assessed due to the lack of extensive market data. Between August 2016 and June 2017, a national coordinated enforcement campaign led by the leading Chinese authority to combat illegal migratory bird trade coincided with the largest-ever pet bird market survey across China by voluntary birdwatchers before and after the enforcement, which served as a unique natural experiment. Across 73 markets from 22 Chinese provinces, the dataset contains 140,723 birds of 346 species from 48 families and recorded a drastic decline in bird abundance traded after enforcement. Notably, species protected under China's Wildlife Protection Law declined significantly, while commercially bred species increased, although responses to enforcement were spatially heterogeneous. Our model showed that the national protection level was the best predictor for the trend of traded species, even after accounting for confounding factors such as regional baseline enforcement pressure and wild native bird populations. However, the widely traded native songbirds were not offered adequate national protection. Future policies should consider the pet bird trade patterns, target key areas of trade, and develop a more systematic market survey design to monitor trade.

BACKGROUND: The role of novel circular RNAs (circRNAs) in colorectal cancer (CRC) remains to be determined. This study aimed to identify a novel circRNA involved in CRC pathogenesis, assess its diagnostic value, and construct a regulatory network. METHODS: Differential expression analysis was conducted using circRNA datasets to screen for differentially expressed circRNAs. The expression of selected circRNAs was validated in external datasets and clinical samples. Diagnostic value of plasma circRNA levels in CRC was assessed. A competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) network was constructed for the circRNA using TCGA dataset. RESULTS: Analysis of datasets revealed that hsa_circ_101303 was significantly overexpressed in CRC tissues compared to normal tissues. The upregulation of hsa_circ_101303 in CRC tissues was further confirmed through the GSE138589 dataset and clinical samples. High expression of hsa_circ_101303 was associated with advanced N stage, M stage, and tumor stage in CRC. Plasma levels of hsa_circ_101303 were markedly elevated in CRC patients and exhibited moderate diagnostic ability for CRC (AUC = 0.738). The host gene of hsa_circ_101303 was also found to be related to the TNM stage of CRC. Nine miRNAs were identified as target miRNAs for hsa_circ_101303, and 27 genes were identified as targets of these miRNAs. Subsequently, a ceRNA network for hsa_circ_101303 was constructed to illustrate the interactions between the nine miRNAs and 27 genes. CONCLUSIONS: The study identifies hsa_circ_101303 as a highly expressed circRNA in CRC, which is associated with the progression of the disease. Plasma levels of hsa_circ_101303 show promising diagnostic potential for CRC. The ceRNA network for hsa_circ_101303 provides valuable insights into the regulatory mechanisms underlying CRC.

Liver fibrosis is an abnormal wound-healing response to liver injuries. It can lead to liver cirrhosis, and even liver cancer and liver failure. There is a lack of treatment for liver fibrosis and it is of great importance to develop anti-fibrotic drugs. A pivotal event in the process of developing liver fibrosis is the activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs), in which the nuclear receptor Nur77 plays a crucial role. This study aimed to develop novel anti-fibrotic agents with Nur77 as the drug target by modifying the structure of THPN, a Nur77-binding and anti-melanoma compound. Specifically, a series of para-positioned 3,4,5-trisubstituted benzene ring compounds with long-chain backbone were generated and tested for anti-fibrotic activity. Among these compounds, compound A8 was with the most potent and Nur77-dependent inhibitory activity against TGF-ß1-induced activation of HSCs. In a crystal structure analysis, compound A8 bound Nur77 in a peg-in-hole mode as THPN did but adopted a different conformation that could interfere the Nur77 interaction with AKT, which was previous shown to be important for an anti-fibrotic activity. In a cell-based assay, compound A8 indeed impeded the interaction between Nur77 and AKT leading to the stabilization of Nur77 without the activation of AKT. In a mouse model, compound A8 effectively suppressed the activation of AKT signaling pathway and up-regulated the cellular level of Nur77 to attenuate the HSCs activation and ameliorate liver fibrosis with no significant toxic side effects. Collectively, this work demonstrated that Nur77-targeting compound A8 is a promising anti-fibrotic drug candidate.

At the physiological level, the interplay between auxin and ethylene has long been recognized as crucial for the regulation of organ abscission in plants. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unknown. Here, we identified transcription factors involved in indoleacetic acid (IAA) and ethylene (ET) signaling that directly regulate the expression of INFLORESCENCE DEFICIENT IN ABSCISSION (IDA) and its receptor HAESA (HAE), which are key components initiating abscission. Specifically, litchi IDA-like 1 (LcIDL1) interacts with the receptor HAESA-like 2 (LcHSL2). Through in vitro and in vivo experiments, we determined that the auxin response factor LcARF5 directly binds and activates both LcIDL1 and LcHSL2. Furthermore, we found that the ETHYLENE INSENSITIVE 3-like transcription factor LcEIL3 directly binds and activates LcIDL1. The expression of IDA and HSL2 homologs was enhanced in LcARF5 and LcEIL3 transgenic Arabidopsis plants, but reduced in ein3 eil1 mutants. Consistently, the expressions of LcIDL1 and LcHSL2 were significantly decreased in LcARF5- and LcEIL3-silenced fruitlet abscission zones (FAZ), which correlated with a lower rate of fruitlet abscission. Depletion of auxin led to an increase in 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (the precursor of ethylene) levels in the litchi FAZ, followed by abscission activation. Throughout this process, LcARF5 and LcEIL3 were induced in the FAZ. Collectively, our findings suggest that the molecular interactions between litchi AUXIN RESPONSE FACTOR 5 (LcARF5)-LcIDL1/LcHSL2 and LcEIL3-LcIDL1 signaling modules play a role in regulating fruitlet abscission in litchi and provide a long-sought mechanistic explanation for how the interplay between auxin and ethylene is translated into the molecular events that initiate abscission.

OBJECTIVES: To assess whether dual-energy computed tomography (DECT), using conventional computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging as a reference standard, is sufficiently accurate to differentiate intracerebral hemorrhage from contrast extravasation after endovascular thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke. METHODS: On January 20, 2021, we searched the PubMed Medline, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases. QUADAS-2 was used to assess the risk of bias and applicability. Meta-analyses were performed using a bivariate random-effects model. To explore sources of heterogeneity, meta-regression analyses were performed. Deeks' funnel plot asymmetry test was used to assess publication bias. RESULTS: A total of 7 studies (269 patients, 269 focal areas) were included. The pooled mean sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of DECT in identifying intracerebral hemorrhage from contrast extravasation after mechanical thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke were 0.77 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.29 to 0.96), 1 (95% CI 0.86 to 1), and 0.99 (95% CI 0.98 to 1), respectively. This evidence was of moderate certainty due to the risk of bias. Higgin's I-squared for study heterogeneity was observed for the pooled sensitivity (I2 = 78.88%) and pooled specificity (I2 = 82.12%). Moreover, Deeks' funnel plot asymmetry test revealed no publication bias (p = 0.38). CONCLUSION: DECT shows excellent accuracy and specificity in differentiating intracerebral hemorrhage from contrast extravasation after endovascular thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke. Nevertheless, there was substantial and moderate heterogeneity among the studies. Future large-scale, prospective cohort studies are warranted to validate our findings. KEY POINTS: • Dual-energy computed tomography shows excellent accuracy and specificity in differentiating intracerebral hemorrhage from contrast extravasation after endovascular thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke. • Via meta-regression analysis, we found various possible covariates, including the publication date, image analysis, index test time, time of follow-up imaging, and reference standard judgment, that had an important effect on the heterogeneity. • There were no concerns regarding applicability in any of the included studies.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (ICAS) is a major cause of stroke in Asian countries. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, a hereditary enzyme defect prevalent in Asian countries, has been associated with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and worse poststroke outcomes. However, the impact of G6PD deficiency on ICAS remains unclear. We aimed to compare the risk of ICAS in stroke patients with and without G6PD deficiency in a Chinese cohort. METHODS: We prospectively and consecutively recruited stroke patients from four centers in China. All patients received intracranial artery assessment by magnetic resonance/computed tomography angiography or digital subtraction angiography, as well as G6PD enzyme evaluation. The prevalence, burden, and characteristics of ICAS were compared between patients with and without G6PD deficiency using multivariate regression analysis. RESULTS: Among 1593 patients, 116 (63.7%) of 182 patients with G6PD deficiency and 714 (50.6%) of 1411 patients with normal G6PD levels were identified as ICAS. Age, hypertension, diabetes, and G6PD deficiency were independent predictors of ICAS. Among patients with ICAS, G6PD-deficient individuals were more likely to have multiple (≥2 segments) intracranial stenosis (odds ratio [OR] = 1.87, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.25-2.81, p = 0.002). G6PD deficiency increased the risk of ICAS in patients who were male (OR = 1.82, 95% CI = 1.24-2.66, p = 0.002), aged ≥70 years (OR = 2.40, 95% CI = 1.33-4.31, p = 0.004), or hypertensive (OR = 1.88, 95% CI = 1.28-2.77, p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Stroke patients with G6PD deficiency have a higher prevalence and ICAS burden than those with normal G6PD, particularly those who are male, older, and hypertensive.

Thifluzamide, a succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) inhibitor, possesses high activity against Rhizoctonia. In this study, 144 Rhizoctonia solani AG-4 (4HGI, 4HGII, and 4HGIII) isolates, the predominate pathogen associated with sugar beet seedling damping-off, were demonstrated to be sensitive to thifluzamide with a calculated mean median effective concentration of 0.0682 ± 0.0025 µg/ml. Thifluzamide-resistant isolates were generated using fungicide-amended media, resulting in four AG-4HGI isolates and eight AG-4HGII isolates with stable resistance and almost no loss in fitness. Evaluation of cross-resistance of the 12 thifluzamide-resistant isolates and their corresponding parental-sensitive isolates revealed a moderately positive correlation between thifluzamide resistance and the level of resistance to eight other fungicides from three groups, the exception being fludioxonil. An active efflux of fungicide through ATP-binding cassette and major facilitator superfamily transporters was found to be correlated to the resistance of R. solani AG-4HGII isolates to thifluzamide based on RNA-sequencing and quantitative reverse transcription-PCR analyses. Sequence analysis of sdhA, sdhB, sdhC, and sdhD revealed replacement of isoleucine by phenylalanine at position 61 in SDHC in 9 of the 12 generated thifluzamide-resistant isolates. No other mutations were found in any of the other genes. Collectively, the data indicate that the active efflux of fungicide and a point mutation in sdhC may contribute to the resistance of R. solani AG-4HGI and AG-4HGII isolates to thifluzamide in vitro. This is the first characterization of the potential molecular mechanism associated with the resistance of R. solani AG-4 isolates to thifluzamide and provides practical guidance for the use of this fungicide.

Rhizoctonia solani partitivirus 2 (RsPV2), in the genus Alphapartitivirus, confers hypovirulence on R. solani AG-1-IA, the causal agent of rice sheath blight. In this study, a new strain of RsPV2 obtained from R. solani AG-4HGI strain BJ-1H, the causal agent of black scurf on potato, wasidentified and designated as Rhizoctonia solani partitivirus 2 strain BJ-1H (RsPV2-BJ). An RNA sequencing analysis of strain BJ-1H and the virus RsPV2-BJ-free strain BJ-1H-VF derived from strain BJ-1H was conducted to investigate the potential molecular mechanism of hypovirulence induced by RsPV2-BJ. In total, 14,319 unigenes were obtained, and 1,341 unigenes were identified as differentially expressed genes (DEGs), with 570 DEGs being down-regulated and 771 being up-regulated. Notably, several up-regulated DEGs were annotated to cell wall degrading enzymes, including ß-1,3-glucanases. Strain BJ-1H exhibited increased expression of ß-1,3-glucanase after RsPV2-BJ infection, suggesting that cell wall autolysis activity in R. solani AG-4HGI strain BJ-1H might be promoted by RsPV2-BJ, inducing hypovirulence in its host fungus R. solani AG-4HGI. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the potential mechanism of hypovirulence induced by a mycovirus in R. solani.

Purpose: Several functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have investigated the resting-state functional connectivity (rs-FC) changes in the primary motor cortex (M1) in patients with acute basal ganglia ischemic stroke (BGIS). However, the frequency-specific FC changes of M1 in acute BGIS patients are still unclear. Our study was aimed at exploring the altered FC of M1 in three frequency bands and the potential features as biomarkers for the identification by using a support vector machine (SVM). Methods: We included 28 acute BGIS patients and 42 healthy controls (HCs). Seed-based FC of two regions of interest (ROI, bilateral M1s) were calculated in conventional, slow-5, and slow-4 frequency bands. The abnormal voxel-wise FC values were defined as the features for SVM in different frequency bands. Results: In the ipsilesional M1, the acute BGIS patients exhibited decreased FC with the right lingual gyrus in the conventional and slow-4 frequency band. Besides, the acute BGIS patients showed increased FC with the right medial superior frontal gyrus (SFGmed) in the conventional and slow-5 frequency band and decreased FC with the left lingual gyrus in the slow-5 frequency band. In the contralesional M1, the BGIS patients showed lower FC with the right SFGmed in the conventional frequency band. The higher FC values with the right lingual gyrus and left SFGmed were detected in the slow-4 frequency band. In the slow-5 frequency band, the BGIS patients showed decreased FC with the left calcarine sulcus. SVM results showed that the combined features (slow-4+slow-5) had the highest accuracy in classification prediction of acute BGIS patients, with an area under curve (AUC) of 0.86. Conclusion: Acute BGIS patients had frequency-specific alterations in FC; SVM is a promising method for exploring these frequency-dependent FC alterations. The abnormal brain regions might be potential targets for future researchers in the rehabilitation and treatment of stroke patients.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of different frequency bands in the spontaneous brain activity among patients with acute basal ganglia ischemic stroke (BGIS). Methods: In the present study, thirty-four patients with acute BGIS and forty-four healthy controls were examined by resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) from May 2019 to December 2020. Two amplitude methods including amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) and fractional ALFF (fALFF) calculated in three frequency bands (conventional frequency band: 0.01-0.08 Hz; slow-5 frequency band: 0.01-0.027 Hz; and slow-4 frequency band: 0.027-0.073 Hz) were conducted to evaluate the spontaneous brain activity in patients with acute BGIS and healthy controls (HCs). Gaussian Random Field Theory (GRF, voxel p < 0.01 and cluster p < 0.05) correction was applied. The correlation analyses were performed between clinical scores and altered metrics values. Results: Compared to HCs, patients with acute BGIS showed decreased ALFF in the right supramarginal gyrus (SMG) in the conventional and slow-4 bands, increased fALFF in the right middle frontal gyrus (MFG) in the conventional and slow-4 bands, and increased fALFF in the bilateral caudate in the slow-5 frequency band. The fALFF value of the right caudate in the slow-5 frequency band was negatively correlated with the clinical scores. Conclusion: In conclusion, this study showed the alterations in ALFF and fALFF in three frequency bands between patients with acute BGIS and HCs. The results reflected that the abnormal LFO amplitude might be related with different frequency bands and promoted our understanding of pathophysiological mechanism in acute BGIS.

In this study, a new double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) virus, Alternaria tenuissima partitivirus 1 (AttPV1), was isolated from Alternaria tenuissima strain XJ-BZ-2-6, a phytopathogenic fungus infecting cotton in China. The genome of AttPV1 comprised three dsRNAs of 1,785 nt (dsRNA1), 1,545 nt (dsRNA2), and 1,537 nt (dsRNA3) in length, the nucleotide sequence of which was determined using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, random-primed clones, and RNA-ligase-mediated rapid amplification of cDNA ends. dsRNA1 had a single open reading frame encoding a putative 61.54-kDa RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp). dsRNA2 and dsRNA3 were predicted to encode putative coat proteins (CPs) of 47.90 kDa and 46.25 kDa, respectively. The RdRp domain shared 63.54-73.17% amino acid sequence identity with members of the genus Gammapartitivirus. Phylogenetic trees based on RdRp or CP sequences showed that AttPV1 clustered with members of the genus Gammapartitivirus. Hence, these results indicate that AttPV1 is a new gammapartitivirus from A. tenuissima.

BACKGROUND The combined effects of bilateral corticospinal tract (CST) reorganization and interhemispheric functional connectivity (FC) reorganization on motor recovery of upper and lower limbs after stroke remain unknown. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 34 patients underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination at weeks 1, 4, and 12 after stroke, with a control group of 34 healthy subjects receiving 1 MRI examination. Interhemispheric FC in the somatomotor network (SMN) was calculated using the resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI). Fractional anisotropy (FA) of bilateral CST was recorded as a measure of reorganization obtained from diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). After intergroup comparisons, multiple linear regression analysis was used to explore the effects of altered FA and interhemispheric FC on motor recovery. RESULTS Interhemispheric FC restoration mostly occurred within 4 weeks after stroke, and FA in ipsilesional remained CST consistently elevated within 12 weeks. Multivariate linear regression analysis showed that the increase in both interhemispheric FC and ipsilesional CST-FA were significantly correlated with greater motor recovery from week 1 to week 4 following stroke. Moreover, only increased FA of ipsilesional CST was significantly correlated with greater motor recovery during weeks 4 to 12 after stroke compared to interhemispheric FC. CONCLUSIONS Our results show dynamic structural and functional reorganizations following motor stroke, and structure reorganization may be more related to motor recovery at the late subacute phase. These results may play a role in guiding neurological rehabilitation.

AIM: This retrospective study was designed to investigate the independent risks and specific biomarker for breast cancer-related ischemic stroke (BCRS). METHODS: Clinical features and laboratory findings were compared between BCRS group and breast cancer group without stroke, and further multivariate analyses were performed to predict independent risks factors for BCRS patients. A receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was configured to estimate the diagnostic efficacy of each independent risk and the product of these risks and to obtain the optimal cut-off value of diagnosis, which was termed the BCRS Index. RESULTS: BCRS patients had elevated plasma D-dimer and CA153 levels and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), as well as more patients received endocrine therapy (all p < 0.05). Moreover, multivariate analysis revealed that D-dimer levels (odds ratio [OR]: 1.002; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.001-1.003; p = 0.000), CA153 levels (OR: 1.005; 95% CI: 1.001-1.008; p = 0.007), PLR (OR: 1.010; 95% CI: 1.004-1.015; p = 0.001), and endocrine therapy (OR: 1.268; 95% CI: 1.087-1.479; p = 0.003) were identified as independent risks of BCRS. Furthermore, ROC analysis displayed that the product of risks had the best diagnostic efficacy, of which the area under the curve was 0.846 ± 0.28. The optimum cut-off point was 2.37 × 106/mL, which was termed the BCRS Index with higher diagnostic accuracy and validity. CONCLUSIONS: Endocrine therapy, as well as elevated plasma D-dimer and CA153 levels and PLR values may be independent risks for BCRS. Furthermore, BCRS Index should be served as a novel specific biomarker for BCRS, which is useful to distinguish BCRS for clinicians.

BACKGROUND Alzheimer disease (AD) is a typical progressive and destructive neurodegenerative disease that has been studied extensively. However, genetic features and molecular mechanisms underlying AD remain unclear. Here we used bioinformatics to investigate the candidate nuclear genes involved in the molecular mechanisms of AD. MATERIAL AND METHODS First, we used Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database to obtain the expression profiles of the mRNAs from hippocampus microarray and identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) the plier algorithm. Second, functional annotation and visualization of the DEGs were conducted by the Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis. Finally, BioGRID, IntAct, STRING, and Cytoscape were utilized to construct a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network. Hub genes were analytically obtained from the PPI network and the microRNA (miRNA)-target network. RESULTS Two hippocampus microarrays (GSE5281 and GSE48350) were obtained from the GEO database, comprising 161 and 253 cases separately. Among these, 118 upregulated genes and 694 downregulated genes were identified. The upregulated DEGs were mainly involved in positive regulation of transcription from RNA polymerase II promoter, positive regulation of cartilage development, and response to wounding. The downregulated DEGs were enriched in chemical synaptic transmission, neurotransmitter secretion, and learning. By combining the results of PPI and miRNA-target network, 8 genes and 2 hub miRNAs were identified, including YWHAZ, DLG4, AGAP2, EGFR, TGFBR3, PSD3, RDX, BRWD1, and hsa-miR-106b-5p and hsa-miR-93-5p. These target genes are highly enriched in various key pathways, such as amyloid-beta formation, regulation of cardiocyte differentiation, and actin cytoskeleton reorganization. CONCLUSIONS In this study, YWHAZ, DLG4, AGAP2, EGFR, TGFBR3, PSD3, RDX, and BRWD1 were identified as candidate genes for future molecular studies in AD, which is expected to improve our understanding of its cause and potential molecular mechanisms. Nuclear genes, DEGs, and related networks identified by integrated bioinformatics analysis may serve as diagnostic and therapeutic targets for AD.

BACKGROUND: The occurrence of ischemic stroke in patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is not well understood. This study aimed to determine independent risk factors to identity ischemic stroke in non-Hodgkin lymphoma-associated ischemic stroke (NHLAIS) patients. METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted on NHLAIS patients and age- and gender-matched NHL patients. We collected clinical data of patients in both groups and used multiple logistic regression analysis to identify independent risk factors for NHLAIS. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was used to establish an identification model based on potential risk factors of NHLAIS. RESULTS: Sixty-three NHLAIS patients and 63 NHL patients were enrolled. Stage III/IV (58/63, 92.1%) and multiple arterial infarcts (44/63, 69.8%) were common among NHLAIS patients. Notably, NHLAIS patients had higher levels of serum fibrinogen (FIB), D-dimer, and ferritin (SF) and prolonged thromboplastin time and prothrombin time (PT) compared with NHL patients (all p < 0.05). Elevated FIB, D-dimer, and SF and prolonged PT were independent risk factors for NHLAIS. The area under the ROC curve of the identification model of NHLAIS patients was largest compared to that of other risk factors (0.838, 95% confidence interval: 0.759-0.899) (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: This study reveals that elevated serum FIB, D-dimer, and SF and prolonged PT are potential independent risk factors of NHLAIS. The identification model established in this study may help monitor NHL patients who are at high risk of developing NHLAIS.

A new double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) virus named Alternaria alternata botybirnavirus 1 (AaBRV1) was isolated from Alternaria alternata strain SD-BZF-19, a phytopathogenic fungus infecting watermelon in China. The genome of AaBRV1 consists of two dsRNA segments (dsRNAs 1 and 2), 6,130 and 5,862 bp in size, respectively. The sequence contains two putative open reading frames (ORFs) which encode two polyproteins of 1,874 and 1,784 amino acids, respectively. Nucleotide sequence comparisons revealed that the two ORFs of AaBRV1 have the highest similarity 60.3% and 56.7%, respectively, with dsRNAs 1 and 2 of Botrytis porri RNA virus 1 (BpRV1). The two polyproteins encoded by dsRNA1 and dsRNA2 shared the highest amino acid identities with the cap-pol fusion protein (60.2%) and hypothetical protein (53.7%) of BpRV1, respectively. AaBRV1 is composed of isometric particles, approximately 35 nm in diameter. Phylogenetic analysis of the RNA dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) domain of the polyprotein revealed that AaBRV1 clusters together with members of the genus Botybirnavirus. These findings support the discovery of a new botybirnavirus in A. alternata.

PURPOSE: To investigate proliferative reorganization in the bilateral corticospinal tract (CST) and functional reorganization in the sensorimotor network (SMN) after internal capsule stroke, and to examine the significance of this reorganization. METHODS: We recruited 17 patients with first-onset acute stroke (16 male, 1 female, mean age 52 ± 10 years) and 17 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. We excluded patients aged < 18 or > 65 years and those with lesions outside the unilateral internal capsule. All subjects underwent diffusion tensor imaging and resting-state functional MRI on days 7, 30, and 90 from symptom onset. We measured fractional anisotropy (FA) in the CST, interhemispheric functional connectivity (FC) within the SMN, and pre-MRI clinical scores, including the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), Barthel Index (BI), and Fugl-Meyer (FM). Correlations among the changes in FA, FC, and clinical scores were analyzed. RESULTS: From day 7 to 90 after stroke, FA in the bilateral CST increased (ipsilesional side, Pinternal capsule = 0.009, Pcentrum semiovale = 0.001; contralesional side, Pinternal capsule = 0.006, Pcentrum semiovale = 0.017), as did FC (P < 0.05); NIHSS scores decreased (P < 0.05), while FM and BI progressively increased (P < 0.05). Increased FA in bilateral CST was negatively correlated with decreased NIHSS scores. Increased FA in only the ipsilesional side was positively correlated with increased FM. Increased FC was positively correlated only with increased BI. CONCLUSION: Proliferative reorganization in the CST and functional reorganization in the SMN support and promote neurological functional recovery after internal capsule infarction.

BACKGROUND Ischemic stroke in cancer patients is associated with poor prognosis. However, the specific biomarkers of cancer-associated ischemic stroke (CaIS) have not been well defined. MATERIAL AND METHODS A retrospective study was conducted on PCaIS patients. Clinical data and laboratory and imaging findings were collected. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the independent risk factors for PCaIS. A multiple model combining the independent risk factors of PCaIS was developed using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) and area under the ROC curve (AUC). RESULTS A total of 83 PCaIS patients and 83 prostate cancer (PCa) patients were included. PCaIS patients had higher levels of D-dimer, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and total prostate-specific antigen (T-PSA). In the multivariate analysis, D-dimer [OR=1.001, 95% CI: 1.00,1.00, P=0.002], NLR [OR=1.12, 95% CI: 1.04,1.22, P=0.005], and T-PSA [OR=6.275, 95% CI: 2.57,15.31, P<0.001] were independent risk factors of PCaIS. Additionally, the AUC of the multiple model of PCaIS was 0.815 (95% CI, 0.750-0.869), with sensitivity of 81.71% and specificity of 70.21%. CONCLUSIONS Elevated levels of D-dimer and T-PSA and increased NLR are independent risk factors of PCaIS. The multiple model of PCaIS can be a specific biomarker and is a reliable predictor of development of PCaIS.

BACKGROUND Cerebral hemorrhage has been increasingly reported in patients with nephrotic syndrome (NS). However, the clinical features and pathogenesis of NS patients with cerebral hemorrhage remain unclear. MATERIAL AND METHODS From January 2007 to August 2017, continuous NS patients with cerebral hemorrhage at the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University were selected. The clinical manifestations, laboratory measurements, and neurological images of these patients were collected and analyzed. RESULTS Acute cerebral hemorrhage was recorded in 15 of 10 461 NS patients. The average age of these 15 patients (9 males and 6 females) was 50.87±23.27 years old. Among these 15 patients, conventional vascular risk factors were identified in 8 patients, hypoalbuminemia and proteinuria were recorded in all 15 patients, coagulopathy was observed in 9 patients, increased D-dimer level was recorded in 13 patients, hyperlipidemia was recorded in 11 patients, and impaired renal function was recorded in 9 patients. The hemorrhage developed in the lobe (n=9), basal ganglia (n=3), cerebellum (n=2), and cerebral hemisphere (n=1). Eight patients were in a coma on the day the cerebral hemorrhage occurred, while 12 patients had a poor prognosis after 30 days of hemorrhage onset. CONCLUSIONS Poor prognosis was recorded in NS patients with cerebral hemorrhage. Although conventional vascular risk factors have only been identified in 8 patients, biochemical abnormalities (hypoalbuminemia, proteinuria, elevated D-dimer, and hyperlipidemia) were recorded in the majority of these 15 patients. Furthermore, most of the hemorrhages developed in the lobes. Coagulopathy might be the potential pathogenesis of cerebral hemorrhage in NS patients.

BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to investigate the reorganization in ipsilesional and contralesional thalamic radiation fibers after unilateral focal thalamic stroke in sensory disturbance patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS We recruited 12 patients with acute unilateral thalamic infarction and sensory disturbance and 12 healthy age- and sex-matched controls. All patients underwent diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and were assessed with National Institutes of Health stroke scale (NIHSS), Barthel index (BI), and paragraph 8 of NIHSS (NIHSS8) at 1 week (W1), 4 weeks (W4), 3 months (M3), and 6 months (M6) after thalamic infraction. The relationship between FA changes and the clinical scores changes were then examined. RESULTS NIHSS and NIHSS8 scores decreased while BI scores increased gradually from W1 to M6 in patients, but not in controls. FA values of the patients gradually increased in ipsilesional and contralesional thalamic radiation fibers from W1 to M6. In addition, the FA values in patients were significantly higher at M3 and M6 compared to W1. No significant changes were observed in the controls. Regarding the relationship between FA changes and the clinical scores changes, the FA increases were negatively correlated with NIHSS and NIHSS8 decrease while FA increases were positively correlated with BI increases. CONCLUSIONS Our results indicate that reorganization occurred after unilateral focal thalamic infarct not only in ipsilesional, but also in contralesional thalamic radiation fibers in patients with sensory disturbance. In addition, the results suggested that the reorganization can support and promote stroke restoration.
