RESUMEN

Chirality represents a fundamental characteristic inherent in nature, playing a pivotal role in the emergence of homochirality and the origin of life. While the principles of chirality in organic chemistry are well-documented, the exploration of chirality within inorganic crystal structures continues to evolve. This ongoing development is primarily due to the diverse nature of crystal/amorphous structures in inorganic materials, along with the intricate symmetrical and asymmetrical relationships in the geometry of their constituent atoms. In this review, we commence with a summary of the foundational concept of chirality in molecules and solid states matters. This is followed by an introduction of structural chirality and electronic chirality in three-dimensional and two-dimensional inorganic materials. The construction of chirality in inorganic materials is classified into physical photolithography, wet-chemistry method, self-assembly, and chiral imprinting. Highlighting the significance of this field, we also summarize the research progress of chiral inorganic materials for applications in optical activity, enantiomeric recognition and chiral sensing, selective adsorption and enantioselective separation, asymmetric synthesis and catalysis, and chirality-induced spin polarization. This review aims to provide a reference for ongoing research in chiral inorganic materials and potentially stimulate innovative strategies and novel applications in the realm of chirality.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) is a pathogen that causes traveler's diarrhea, for which an effective vaccine is lacking. Previous studies showed that Limosilactobacillus reuteri could inhibit E. coli, effectively increase the expression of its tight junction protein, and reduce the adhesion of ETEC to the intestinal epithelial Caco-2 cell line. In this study, three kinds of yogurt with different starter cultures were first prepared: Lm. reuteri yogurt (fermented by Lm. reuteri alone), traditional yogurt (fermented by Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus at a ratio of 1:1) and mixed yogurt (fermented by Lm. reuteri, S. thermophilus and L. delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus at a ratio of 1:1:1). The physiological properties, oxidative stress, intestinal barrier function, tight junction protein, pathological conditions and intestinal microbiota composition were investigated. RESULTS: The data showed that Lm. reuteri-fermented yogurt pregavage could effectively alleviate the intestinal barrier impairment caused by ETEC in mice. It alleviated intestinal villus shortening and inflammatory cell infiltration, decreased plasma diamine oxidase concentration and increased claudin-1 and occludin expression in the jejunum of ETEC-infected mice. In addition, Lm. reuteri-fermented yogurt significantly reduced the ETEC load in fecal samples, reversed the increase in Pseudomonadota abundance and decreased Bacteroidota abundance caused by ETEC infection. Furthermore, the composition of the intestinal microbiota could maintain a stable state similar to that in healthy mice. CONCLUSION: These findings indicate that Lm. reuteri-fermented yogurt could alleviate intestinal barrier damage, inhibit ETEC growth and maintain the stability of the intestinal microbiota during ETEC infection. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMEN

Disrupted gut microbiota homeostasis is an important cause of inflammatory colitis. Studies have shown that effective supplementation with probiotics can maintain microbial homeostasis and alleviate colitis. Here, to increase the viability of probiotics in the harsh gastrointestinal environments and enable targeted delivery, a redox-sensitive selenium hyaluronic acid (HA-Se) hydrogel encapsulating probiotics was developed. HA was modified with selenocystamine dihydrochloride and crosslinked by an amide reaction to generate a redox-sensitive hydrogel with stable mechanical properties, a low hemolysis rate and satisfactory biocompatibility. The HA-Se hydrogel exhibited suitable sensitivity to 10 mM GSH or 100 µM H2O2. The encapsulation of Limosilactobacillus reuteri (LR) in the HA-Se hydrogel (HA-Se-LR) significantly increased the survival rate of the probiotics in simulated gastric and intestinal fluid. HA-Se-LR administration increased the survival rate of mice with dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis, significantly alleviated oxidative stress and inflammation, and increased the effect of LR on microbiota α diversity. These results indicate that the HA-Se hydrogel constructed in this study can be used as a delivery platform to treat colitis, expanding the targeted applications of the natural polymer HA in disease treatment and the administration of probiotics as drugs to alleviate disease symptoms.

RESUMEN

Domain adaptation is a promising way to ease the costly data labeling process in the era of deep learning (DL). A practical situation is partial domain adaptation (PDA), where the label space of the target domain is a subset of that in the source domain. Although existing methods yield appealing performance in PDA tasks, it is highly presumable that computation overhead exists in deep PDA models since the target is only a subtask of the original problem. In this work, PDA and model compression are seamlessly integrated into a unified training process. The cross-domain distribution divergence is reduced by minimizing a soft-weighted maximum mean discrepancy (SWMMD), which is differentiable and functions as regularization during network training. We use gradient statistics to compress the overparameterized model to identify and prune redundant channels based on the corresponding scaling factors in batch normalization (BN) layers. The experimental results demonstrate that our method can achieve comparable classification performance to state-of-the-art methods on various PDA tasks, with a significant reduction in model size and computation overhead.

RESUMEN

The efficient organic nonlinear optical material 4-hydroxy benzaldehyde-N-methyl 4-stilbazolium tosylate (HBST) was grown from methanol by slope nucleation method combined with slow cooling (SNM-SC) for the first time. The optimum growth conditions based on the cooling rate was further investigated. The single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed that the chromophores of HBST crystal make an angle of about 33° with respect to the a-axis, which is close to the optimum of Terahertz (THz)-wave generation and electro-optics applications. NMR and FT-IR spectral studies have been performed to ascertain various functional groups present in the sample. Futhermore, the thermal stability and decomposition stages were analyzed through TG-DTA and DSC techniques. The dielectric constant and dielectric loss of HBST crystal have been studied. Critical optical properties like the absorption coefficient, refractive index, cut-off wavelength and band gap energy were calculated. Photoluminescence (PL) exication studies indicated green emission occured at 507nm. All the results of HBST crystal make it a promising candidate in the fields of optoelectronic and the generation of THz.
