RESUMEN

In one-dimensional polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) containing five- and six-membered rings fused together, one key question is whether the structures possess a quinoidal or aromatic diradical character. Here, we generate such PAHs by reversible oxidation of PAH-extended tetrathiafulvalenes (TTFs). Extended TTFs were thus prepared and studied for their geometrical properties (crystallography), redox properties, and UV/Vis/NIR/EPR characteristics as a function of charge state. The EPR measurements of radical cations showed unique features for each PAH-TTF. The dications, formally composed of fluoreno[3,2-b]fluorene and diindeno[1,2-b:1',2'-i]anthracene cores, were experimentally found to exhibit singlet ground states. For the latter, calculations reveal the closed shell, quinoid singlet state to be isoenergetic with the open shell singlet diradical. Each charge state exhibited unique optical properties with radical cations absorbing strongly in the NIR region with signatures from π-dimers for the large core. The experimental results were paralleled and supported by detailed computations, including spin density distribution calculations, EPR simulations, and nucleus independent chemical shift (NICS) xy scans.

RESUMEN

The in situ spectroelectrochemical cyclic voltammetric studies of the antimony-monocapped nickel(II) and iron(II) tris-pyridineoximates with a labile triethylantimony cross-linking group and Zr(IV)/Hf(IV) phthalocyaninate complexes were performed in order to understand the nature of the redox events in the molecules of heterodinuclear zirconium(IV) and hafnium(IV) phthalocyaninate-capped derivatives. Electronic structures of their 1e-oxidized and 1e-electron-reduced forms were experimentally studied by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and UV-vis-near-IR spectroelectrochemical experiments and supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The investigated hybrid molecular systems that combine a transition metal (pseudo)clathrochelate and a Zr/Hf-phthalocyaninate moiety exhibit quite rich redox activity both in the cathodic and in the anodic region. These binuclear compounds and their precursors were tested as potential catalysts in oxidation reactions of cyclohexane and the results are discussed.

RESUMEN

Geometry optimization, energetics, electronic structure, and topology of electron density of dicopper (I) and dichromium (II) tetrakis(µ-acetato)-diaqua complexes are studied focusing on the metal-metal interactions. The performance of broken symmetry (BS) single-determinant ab initio (Hartree-Fock, Møller-Plesset perturbation theory to the second and third orders, coupled clusters singles and doubles) and density functional theory (BLYP, B3LYP, B3LYP-D3, B2PLYP, MPW2PLYP) methods is compared to multideterminant ab initio (CASSCF, NEVPT2) methods as well as to the multipole model of charge density from a single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiment (Herich et al., Acta Cryst. 2018, B74, 681-692). In vacuo DFT geometry optimizations (improper axial water ligand orientation) are compared against the periodic ones. The singlet state is found to be energetically preferred. J coupling of (I) becomes underestimated for all ab initio methods used, when compared to experiment. It is concluded that the strength of the direct M─M interactions correlates closely with the J coupling magnitude at a given level of theory. The double potential well character of (II) and of the dehydrated form of (II) are considered with respect to the Cr─Cr distance. The physical effective bond order of the metal-metal interaction is small (below 0.1 e) in (I) and moderate (0.4 e) in (II). The CASSCF results overestimate the electron density of the metal-metal bond critical point by 20% and 50% in (I) and (II), respectively, when compared to the multipole model. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

RESUMEN

Chromium species are the active sites in a variety of heterogeneous catalysts, such as the Phillips catalyst, which is composed of Cr ions supported by SiO2 and is used to produce polyethylene. Among the catalytically relevant oxidation states of chromium is CrIV. Families of neutral, homoleptic, four-coordinate complexes, CrL4, with a variety of monoanionic, monodentate ligands, such as L = alkyls, aryls, amides, ketimides (R2C = N-), alkoxides, and siloxides, are available and can provide information regarding Cr sites in heterogeneous materials. For example, the previously reported siloxide, Cr(DTBMS)4, where DTBMS = -OSiMe tBu2 (di- tert-butylmethylsiloxide), may be considered a molecular analogue of CrIV supported by SiO2. Such CrL4 complexes can have either a singlet ( S = 0) or triplet ( S = 1) spin ground state, and the spin state preferences of such complexes are not fully understood. A truly tetrahedral d2 S = 1 complex would exhibit no zero-field splitting (zfs), and the zfs is indeed small and observable by X-band EPR for several CrR4 and Cr(OR)4 complexes. In contrast, Cr(DTBMS)4 has zfs beyond the range amenable to X-band EPR so that high-frequency and high-field EPR (HFEPR) is appropriate. HFEPR of Cr(DTBMS)4 in the solid state shows the presence of three very similar triplet species with the major component having D = +0.556 cm-1. Classical ligand-field theory (LFT) and quantum chemical theory (QCT), including ab initio methods, use EPR and electronic absorption spectra to give a complete picture of the electronic structure of Cr(DTBMS)4, and other complexes of formula Cr(ER n)4, E = C, n = 3; E = N, n = 2; E = O, n = 1; E = F, n = 0. Computations show the importance of ligand steric bulk and of π-bonding in controlling the subtleties of electronic structure of CrL4 species. These electronic structure results, including zfs, which is a measure of excited state accessibility, for both triplet and singlet excited states, might be related to the catalytic activity of paramagnetic Cr species.

RESUMEN

With the aim of enhancing the biological activity of ruthenium-nitrosyl complexes, new compounds with four equatorially bound indazole ligands, namely, trans-[RuCl(Hind)4(NO)]Cl2·H2O ([3]Cl2·H2O) and trans-[RuOH(Hind)4(NO)]Cl2·H2O ([4]Cl2·H2O), have been prepared from trans-[Ru(NO2)2(Hind)4] ([2]). When the pH-dependent solution behavior of [3]Cl2·H2O and [4]Cl2·H2O was studied, two new complexes with two deprotonated indazole ligands were isolated, namely [RuCl(ind)2(Hind)2(NO)] ([5]) and [RuOH(ind)2(Hind)2(NO)] ([6]). All prepared compounds were comprehensively characterized by spectroscopic (IR, UV-vis, 1H NMR) techniques. Compound [2], as well as [3]Cl2·2(CH3)2CO, [4]Cl2·2(CH3)2CO, and [5]·0.8CH2Cl2, the latter three obtained by recrystallization of the first isolated compounds (hydrates or anhydrous species) from acetone and dichloromethane, respectively, were studied by X-ray diffraction methods. The photoinduced release of NO in [3]Cl2 and [4]Cl2 was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and resulting paramagnetic NO species were detected by EPR spectroscopy. The quantum yields of NO release were calculated and found to be low (3-6%), which could be explained by NO dissociation and recombination dynamics, assessed by femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy. The geometry and electronic parameters of Ru species formed upon NO release were identified by DFT calculations. The complexes [3]Cl2 and [4]Cl2 showed considerable antiproliferative activity in human cancer cell lines with IC50 values in low micromolar or submicromolar concentration range and are suitable for further development as potential anticancer drugs. p53-dependence of Ru-NO complexes [3]Cl2 and [4]Cl2 was studied and p53-independent mode of action was confirmed. The effects of NO release on the cytotoxicity of the complexes with or without light irradiation were investigated using NO scavenger carboxy-PTIO.

RESUMEN

Nowadays graphene materials have attracted a considerable attention because of their potential utilization as gas sensors, biosensors, or adsorbents. Doping or decorating the graphene surface with transition metals can significantly tune its electronic properties and chemical reactivity. Circumcoronene, being a polyaromatic hydrocarbon composed of 19 benzene rings, can be used as a model system of a tiny graphene quantum dot. The adsorption of a set of small molecules (water, hydrogen peroxide, methanol, ethanol, and oxygen) over the copper-decorated circumcoronene was theoretically investigated using density functional theory (DFT) and Bader's quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM). Following the obtained B3LYP energies, the adsorption of O2 and the chemisorption of H2O2 were found to be energetically the most favorable, with energetic outcomes of -3.6 eV and -3.7 eV, respectively. Moreover, an H2O2 molecule was decomposed during the chemisorption on the Cu atom to form a neutral Cu(OH)2 molecule. Changes in the electronic structure of the studied systems, in particular the oxidation of copper, after the adsorption were investigated within the framework of QTAIM (e.g., charges, bond critical points, and delocalization indices) and partial density of states (PDOS) analysis. The results of this study suggest the suitability of the Cu-decorated graphene materials as adsorbents and/or gas sensors in practical applications.

RESUMEN

Mixing of ionic liquids provides new opportunities for their tuning, enabling the applications of ionic liquid mixtures to expand. At the same time, the genesis of the fundamental properties of ionic liquid mixtures is still poorly understood. In this study we carried out a molecular dynamics simulation of binary mixtures of 1-buthyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, 1-buthyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, and 1-buthyl-3-methylimidazolium tris(perfluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate ([C4mim][PF6] + [C4mim][NTf2], [C4mim][PF6] + [C4mim][FAP], [C4mim][FAP] + [C4mim][NTf2]) in a wide concentration range at 303.15 K and complemented it with quantum mechanical calculations. Three pure ionic liquids underwent the same kind of analysis for comparison purposes. We found that the addition of the [FAP]--anion to a mixture enhances the segregation of non-polar domains and weakens the hydrogen-bond network. The H-bonds in the studied mixtures are rather weak, as follows from QTAIM analysis, with the rarest occurrence for the [FAP]--anion. The competition of two anions in the mixtures for the most acidic hydrogen of the 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium cation is reported. In most of the cases, the smaller anion ([PF6]- or [NTf2]-) with stronger charge concentration displaces the bigger one ([NTf2]- or [FAP]-) from the preferred coordination site. The existing nano-segregation in some mixtures notably slows down ion diffusion. Our results show that the differences in anion size, shape and nature are the main reasons for nano-segregation and the non-ideal behavior of ionic liquid mixtures.

RESUMEN

Biological activity, functionality, and synthesis of (fluoro)quinolones is closely related to their precursors (for instance 3-fluoroanilinoethylene derivatives) (i.e., their functional groups, conformational behavior, and/or electronic structure). Herein, the theoretical study of 3-fluoroanilinoethylene derivatives is presented. Impact of substituents (acetyl, methyl ester, and ethyl ester) on the conformational analysis and the spectral behavior is investigated. The B3LYP/6-311++G** computational protocol is utilized. It is found that the intramolecular hydrogen bond N-H···O is responsible for the energetic preference of anti (a) conformer (anti position of 3-fluoroanilino group with respect to the C═C double bond). The Boltzmann ratios of the conformers are related to the differences of the particular dipole moments and/or their dependence on the solvent polarity. The studied acetyl, ethyl ester, and methyl ester substituted fluoroquinolone precursors prefer in the solvent either EZa, ZZa, or both conformers equally, respectively. In order to understand the degree of freedom of rotation of the trans ethyl ester group, B3LYP/6-311G** molecular dynamic simulations were carried out. Vibrational frequencies, electron transitions, as well as NMR spectra are analyzed with respect to conformational analysis, including the effect of the substituent. X-ray structures of the precursors are presented and compared with the results of the conformational analysis.

RESUMEN

Luteolin has been reviewed as a flavonoid possessing potential cardioprotective, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer activities. Having multiple biological effects, luteolin may act as either an antioxidant or a pro-oxidant. In this work, the protective role of copper(II)-chelation by luteolin on DNA damage via the Cu-Fenton reaction was studied. EPR and UV-vis spectroscopic data demonstrated that the luteolin, lacking 3-OH group, chelates to Cu(II) via the 5-OH and 4-CO groups, respectively. EPR spin trapping experiments using DMPO spin trap confirmed that the coordination of luteolin to Cu(II) significantly suppressed formation of hydroxyl and superoxide radicals (by 80%) in a Cu-Fenton system. Absorption titrations showed that the chelation of Cu(II) by luteolin slightly increased the mild intercalation strength of its interaction with DNA, as compared with free luteolin. Comparison with kaempferol and quercetin revealed, that the strength of the interaction between the free flavonoids/Cu-flavonoid complexes with DNA is only mildly affected by the presence/absence of 3-OH group. Due to the differences in the sensitivities of absorption titrations and viscometry, the latter confirmed weaker DNA intercalating efficiency of Cu-luteolin complex than does free luteolin. A dose dependent protective effect of luteolin against ROS-induced DNA damage was observed using gel electrophoresis. This effect was more pronounced compared to quercetin and kaempferol. In conclusion, the administration of luteolin to patients suffering from oxidative stress-related diseases with disturbed Cu-metabolism such as Alzheimer's diseases (antioxidant effect) and certain cancers (prooxidant effect) may have several health benefits.

RESUMEN

The molecule of 2,2-dinitroethene-1,1-diamine (FOX-7) is one of the most interesting molecules with multiple redox centres stabilized by push-pull effect. To reveal the detailed mechanism of its electrochemical process radical intermediates formed in the course of its electrochemical reduction in organic aprotic media have been studied by in situ simultaneous electrochemical ESR measurements (SEESR). The radical generated on the second reduction step possesses an alternating line-width (AL) effect in the ESR spectra as a result of intramolecular dynamic processes in the timescale of ESR splitting constants. The spectra measured at different temperatures (230-335 K) were analysed with the help of a fitting program which includes a molecular dynamics. Observed dynamics describes well an asymmetric 2-site exchange model for the whole temperature range. With help of the optimized parameters and quantum chemical calculations this radical has been identified as 2,2-dinitroethane-1-amine-1-imine radical dianion, [(H2N)(HN)C=C(NO2)2]2-. The dynamic process responsible for the AL effect consists of mutual turning (changing of dihedral angle) of the both nitro groups, resulting in an intramolecular spin-density (electron) transfer. The dynamic parameters of the process have been established.

RESUMEN

Three dimanganese(iii) complexes have been synthesised and fully characterised by standard spectroscopic methods and spectroelectrochemistry. Each MnIII ion is chelated by a salen type ligand (H2L), but there is variation in the bridging group: LMn(OOCCH[double bond, length as m-dash]CHCOO)MnL, LMn(OOCC6H4COO)MnL, and LMn(OOCC6H4C6H4COO)MnL. X-ray diffraction revealed an axial compression of each six-coordinate high-spin d4 MnIII ion, which is a Jahn-Teller-active ion. Temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility and variable temperature-variable field (VTVH) magnetisation measurements, as well as high-frequency and -field EPR (HFEPR) spectroscopy were used to accurately describe the magnetic properties of the complexes, not only the single-ion spin Hamiltonian parameters: g-values and zero-field splitting (ZFS) parameters D and E, but also the exchange interaction constant J between the two ions, which has been seldom determined for a di-MnIII complex, particularly when there is more than a single bridging atom. Quantum chemical calculations reproduced well the electronic and geometric structure of these unusual complexes, and, in particular, their electronic absorption spectra along with the spin Hamiltonian and exchange parameters.

RESUMEN

Protonation in the two-electron/two-proton reduction processes of 2,6-dichlorophenolindophenolate (DCIP) is investigated combining density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) methods. DCIP (anion), DCIP•- (radical anion), and DCIP2- (dianion) are considered, including the electronic structure analysis from the prospective of quantum theory of atoms and molecules (QTAIM). It is shown that oxygen on the indophenolate moiety and nitrogen are the first and/or the second proton acceptor sites and their energetic order depends on the total charge of the system. MD simulations of differently charged species interacting with the solvent molecules have been performed for methanol, water, and oxonium cation (H3O+). Methanol and water molecules are found to form only hydrogen bonds with the solute irrespective of its charge. The calculated pKa values show that the imino group of DCIPH- is a weaker acid than water. While in the case of DCIP (and DCIP•-) plus oxonium cation, proton transfer from the solvent to the solute was evidenced for both aforementioned acceptor sites. In addition, MD simulations of bulks containing 15 and 43 molecules of water around the DCIP molecule have been performed, revealing the formation of 2-4 hydrogen bonds. Graphical Abstract 2,6-Dichlorophenolindophenolate interacts with solvent molecules (water, oxonium cation and methanol). Hydrogen transfer and electronic structure are studied by DFT and molecular dynamics methods.

RESUMEN

The presented paper is focused on the calculation of hyperfine coupling constants (HFCC) of Cu (2+) ion in water environment. To simulate the conditions of the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiment in aqueous phase, molecular dynamics using the density functional theory (DFT) was employed. In total three different functionals (BLYP, B3LYP, M06) were employed for studying their suitability in describing coordination of Cu (2+) by water molecules. The system of our interest was composed of one Cu (2+) cation surrounded by a selected number (between thirty and fifty) of water molecules. Besides the non-relativistic HFCCs (Fermi contact terms) of Cu (2+) also the four-component relativistic HFCC calculations are presented. The importance of the proper evaluation of HFCCs, the inclusion of spin-orbit term, for Cu (2+) containing systems (Neese, J. Chem. Phys. 118, 3939 2003; Almeida et al., Chem. Phys. 332, 176 2007) is confirmed at the relativistic four-component level of theory.

RESUMEN

Copper(II) complexes with fluoroquinolones in the presence of the nitrogen donor heterocyclic ligands 1,10-phenanthroline have been considered in detail. The phenanthroline moiety was introduced into the ligand environment with the aim to determine whether the nuclease activity is feasible. All suitable X-ray structures of the complexes under study reveal a distorted square pyramidal coordination geometry for Cu(II) atom. The conformational and spectroscopic (FT-IR and UV-visible) behavior has been analyzed and has been interpreted with respect to B3LYP/6-311G* calculations including molecular dynamics. The ability of the complexes to cleave DNA was studied by agarose gel electrophoresis with plasmid DNA pBSK+. The results have confirmed that the complexes under study behave as the chemical nucleases. Nuclease like activity in the absence of hydrogen peroxide allows us to deduce an interaction of the complexes with the DNA resulting in the conversion of supercoiled circular DNA to the nicked form. The DNA cleavage activity enhanced by the presence of hydrogen peroxide demonstrates the participation of reactive oxygen species, such as superoxide radical anions and hydroxyl radicals which presence was confirmed independently using the standard radical scavenging agents. It has been suggested that the radical formation through the Fenton/Haber-Weiss reaction is mediated by the redox cycling mechanisms with the participation of cupric/cuprous ions. Cytotoxic activity was evaluated as the 50% cytotoxic concentration (CC50). The potential effects of tested compounds on replication of murine gammaherpesvirus 68 (MHV-68) under in vitro conditions were also evaluated. However, no antiviral activity against MHV-68 was observed.
