RESUMEN

Protein quantification methods using spectrophotometry are widely used in laboratory routines for different purposes. Samples generally contain non-protein components that can interfere with the quality of the analysis. A simple and quick test with different concentrations of sodium chloride demonstrated that the Bradford method is significantly affected by the presence of salt, while Biuret remains stable. Therefore, the choice of method is an important factor in reducing errors and ensuring more reliable results.

Here, isotopically labeled 68ZnO NPs (ZnO NPs) and 68ZnO NPs with a thin 68Zn3(PO4)2 shell (ZnO_Ph NPs) were foliarly applied (40 µg Zn) to pepper plants (Capsicum annuum) to determine the effect of surface chemistry of ZnO NPs on the Zn uptake and systemic translocation to plant organs over 6 weeks. Despite similar dissolution of both Zn-based NPs after 3 weeks, the Zn3(PO4)2 shell on ZnO_Ph NPs (48 ± 12 nm; -18.1 ± 0.6 mV) enabled a leaf uptake of 2.31 ± 0.34 µg of Zn, which is 2.7 times higher than the 0.86 ± 0.18 µg of Zn observed for ZnO NPs (26 ± 8 nm; 14.6 ± 0.4 mV). Further, ZnO_Ph NPs led to higher Zn mobility and phloem loading, while Zn from ZnO NPs was stored in the epidermal tissues, possibly through cell wall immobilization as a storage strategy. These differences led to higher translocation of Zn from the ZnO_Ph NPs within all plant compartments. ZnO_Ph NPs were also more persistent as NPs in the exposed leaf and in the plant stem over time. As a result, the treatment of ZnO_Ph NPs induced significantly higher Zn transport to the fruit than ZnO NPs. As determined by spICP-TOFMS, Zn in the fruit was not in the NP form. These results suggest that the Zn3(PO4)2 shell on ZnO NPs can help promote the transport of Zn to pepper fruits when foliarly applied. This work provides insight into the role of Zn3(PO4)2 on the surface of ZnO NPs in foliar uptake and in planta biodistribution for improving Zn delivery to edible plant parts and ultimately improving the Zn content in food for human consumption.

Lychnophora is a genus of South American flowering plants in the daisy family, popularly known as "Brazilian arnica". It is used in traditional medicine as an anti-inflammatory and analgesic agent, whose active components are derived from chlorogenic acid (CGA) and C-flavonoids. Since the drugs currently used are ineffective to treat glaucoma, agents with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties may represent new alternatives in preventing cellular lesions in retinal ischemia. In this study, we report the neuroprotective effects of CGA and 4,5-di-O-[E]-caffeoylquinic (CQA) acid, isolated from Lychnophora plants, in a rodent glaucoma model. Wistar rats were administered intravitreally with 10 µg CGA or CGA, and then subjected to acute retinal ischemia (ISC) by increasing intraocular pressure (IPO) for 45 minutes followed (or not) by 15 minutes of reperfusion (I/R). Qualitative and quantitative analyses of neurodegeneration were performed using hematoxylin-eosin or Fluoro-Jade C staining protocols. All retinas submitted to ISC or I/R exhibited matrix disorganization, pyknotic nuclei, and pronounced vacuolization of the cytoplasm in the ganglion cell layer (GCL) and inner nuclear layer (INL). Pretreatment with CGA or CQA resulted in the protection of the retinal layers against matrix disorganization and a reduction in the number of vacuolized cells and pyknotic nuclei. Also, pretreatment with CGA or CQA resulted in a significant reduction in neuronal death in the GCL, the INL, and the outer nuclear layer (ONL) after ischemic insult. Our study demonstrated that CGA and CQA exhibit neuroprotective activities in retinas subjected to ISC and I/R induced by IPO in Wistar rats.

BACKGROUND: Nipple pain is the second most common reason for early weaning, exceeded only by the insufficient milk supply. Nipple fissures can bring other problems, acting also as a portal for bacteria and leading to mastitis. This work proposes the breast protector composite development using materials with tissue repair and moisturizing properties, aligned with a low-cost procedure, aiming not only to relieve pain, but also to heal the nipple fissures caused by breastfeeding. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For the dressings, production was used Natural Latex extracted from the rubber tree and glycerol. The Samples were evaluated chemically and physically by the techniques of Scanning Electron Microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, mechanical traction, and contact angle. The samples were also biologically evaluated by the hemolytic and cytotoxic activity assays. RESULTS: From the physical-chemical assays, the matrix with glycerol has high pore density; the natural latex and glycerol do not covalently interact, indicating that the glycerol can be released; the glycerol addition makes the matrix more elastic but fragile, and increase the wettability. From the biological assays, both materials showed no hemolytic effects; and the cytotoxicity results showed that glycerol did not present cytotoxicity in the fibroblasts, but show a dose-dependent influence in the keratinocytes. CONCLUSION: The material developed for application in breast fissures has mechanical properties similar to those found for materials for dermal applications, present high wettability and pore density. Furthermore, the material showed no cytolytic activity and the tests with skin cell cultures demonstrated the biocompatibility.

A multi-projection display consists of multiple projection units. Because of the large amount of data, a multi-projection system shows large, high-quality images. According to the projection geometry and the optical configuration, multi-projection systems show different viewing characteristics for generated three-dimensional images. In this paper, we analyzed the various projection geometries of multi-projection systems, and explained the different depth-expression characteristics for each individual projection geometry. We also demonstrated the depth-expression characteristic of an experimental multi-projection system.

BACKGROUND: Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) treatment consists of using valves for drainage, as it is for hydrocephalus in general. Despite this, complications can occur, putting the patient at risk, and neurological monitoring is crucial. OBSERVATIONS: A 61-year-old male, who had been diagnosed with NPH 3 years prior and was being treated with a ventriculoperitoneal shunt with a programmable valve, presented to the emergency department because of a traumatic brain injury due to a fall from standing height. No previous complications were reported. He had an altered intracranial pressure (ICP) waveform in the emergency room when monitored with the brain4care device, with a P2/P1 ratio of 1.6. Imaging helped to confirm shunt dysfunction. Revision surgery normalized the ratio to 1.0, and the patient was discharged. Upon return after 14 days, an outpatient analysis revealed a ratio of 0.6, indicating improvement. LESSONS: In selected cases of NPH, noninvasive ICP waveform morphology analysis can be effective as a diagnostic aid, as well as in the pre- and postsurgical follow-up, given the possibility of comparing the values of ICP preoperatively and immediately postoperatively and the outpatient P2/P1 ratio, helping to manage these patients.

Wastewater-based epidemiology was applied in northeastern Brazil during a dance festival, revealing that cocaine consumption doubled during the event days. The daily drug loads were 0.95 ± 0.03 to 11.4 ± 0.4 g/day for BE, 1.8 ± 0.4 to 7.6 ± 0.3 g/day for COC, 0.04 ± 0.02 to 0.19 ± 0.02 g/day for COE, and 0.08 ± 0.02 to 0.80 ± 0.02 g/day for MDMA.


This study employed the wastewater­based epidemiology (WBE) strategy to investigate cocaine (COC) and ecstasy (MDMA) usage during Carnatal festival in Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. Wastewater samples were collected over the four festival days (December 12­15, 2019), as well as during corresponding days before and after the event. The samples underwent filtration, acidification, solid­phase extraction (SPE) for pre­concentration, and analysis using ultra­high­performance liquid chromatography­tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC­MS/MS) with calibration using deuterated internal standards. The measured concentration ranges in the wastewater samples were as follows: benzoylecgonine (BE, a metabolite of COC use) ranged from 760 ± 30 to 8914 ± 252 ng/L, COC (non­metabolized or directly discharged) ranged from 1182 ± 25 to 6,760 ± 95 ng/L, cocaethylene (COE, a metabolite of alcohol­COC use) ranged from 21 ± 10 to 161 ± 10 ng/L, and MDMA (ecstasy) ranged from 18 ± 5 to 613 ± 15 ng/L. Daily wastewater loads were estimated as 0.81 ± 0.03 to 11.69 ± 0.33 g/day for BE, 1.42 ± 0.03 to 8.06 ± 0.11 g/day for COC, 0.02 ± 0.01 to 0.21 ± 0.01 g/day for COE, and 0.02 ± 0.01 to 0.80 ± 0.02 g/day for MDMA. Notably, COE and MDMA were only detected above the quantification limit during the festival days. The data enable estimating that COC consumption doubled during the event days. The COC/BE ratio indicated likely drug disposals on the event's last day and the subsequent week. The study's findings shed light on illicit substance consumption, assisting in public health programs and combating drug trafficking efforts.

In an effort to develop efficient vaccine formulations, the use of ordered mesoporous silica (SBA-15) as an antigen carrier has been investigated. SBA-15 has required properties such as high surface area and pore volume, including narrow pore size distribution to protect antigens inside its matrix. This study aimed to examine the impact of solvent removal methods, specifically freeze-drying and evaporation on the intrinsic properties of an immunogenic complex. The immunogenic complexes, synthesized and incorporated with BSA, were characterized by various physicochemical techniques. Small Angle X-ray Scattering measurements revealed the characteristic reflections associated to pure SBA-15, indicating the preservation of the silica mesostructured following BSA incorporation and the formation of BSA aggregates within the macropore region. Nitrogen Adsorption Isotherm measurements demonstrated a decrease in surface area and pore volume for all samples, indicating that the BSA was incorporated into the SBA-15 matrix. Fluorescence spectroscopy evidenced that the tryptophan residues in BSA inside SBA-15 or in solution displayed similar spectra, showing the preservation of the aromatic residues' environment. The Circular Dichroism spectra of BSA in both conditions suggest the preservation of its native secondary structure after the encapsulation process. The immunogenic analysis with the detection of anti-BSA IgG did not give any significant difference between the non-dried, freeze-dried or evaporated groups. However, all groups containing BSA and SBA-15 showed results almost three times higher than the groups with pure BSA (control group). These facts indicate that none of the BSA incorporation methods interfered with the immunogenicity of the complex. In particular, the freeze-dried process is regularly used in the pharmaceutical industry, therefore its adequacy to produce immunogenic complexes was proved Furthermore, the results showed that SBA-15 increased the immunogenic activity of BSA.

Natural Rubber Latex (NRL) has shown to be a promising biomaterial for use as a drug delivery system to release various bioactive compounds. It is cost-effective, easy to handle, biocompatible, and exhibits pro-angiogenic and pro-healing properties for both soft and hard tissues. NRL releases compounds following burst and sustained release kinetics, exhibiting first-order release kinetics. Moreover, its pore density can be adjusted for tailored kinetics profiles. In addition, biotechnological applications of NRL in amblyopia, smart mattresses, and neovaginoplasty have demonstrated success. This comprehensive review explores NRL's diverse applications in biotechnology and biomedicine, addressing challenges in translating research into clinical practice. Organized into eight sections, the review emphasizes NRL's potential in wound healing, drug delivery, and metallic nanoparticle synthesis. It also addresses the challenges in enhancing NRL's physical properties and discusses its interactions with the human immune system. Furthermore, examines NRL's potential in creating wearable medical devices and biosensors for neurological disorders. To fully explore NRL's potential in addressing important medical conditions, we emphasize throughout this review the importance of interdisciplinary research and collaboration. In conclusion, this review advances our understanding of NRL's role in biomedical and biotechnological applications, offering insights into its diverse applications and promising opportunities for future development.

Advances and the discovery of new biomaterials have opened new frontiers in regenerative medicine. These biomaterials play a key role in current medicine by improving the life quality or even saving the lives of millions of people. Since the 2000s, Natural Rubber Latex (NRL) has been employed as wound dressings, mechanical barrier for Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR), matrix for drug delivery, and grafting. NRL is a natural polymer that can stimulate cell proliferation, neoangiogenesis, and extracellular matrix (ECM) formation. Furthermore, it is well established that proteins and other biologically active molecules present in the Natural Latex Serum (NLS) are responsible for the biological properties of NRL. NLS can be obtained from NRL by three main methods, namely (i) Centrifugation (fractionation of NRL in distinct fractions), (ii) Coagulation and sedimentation (coagulating NRL to separate the NLS from rubber particles), and (iii) Alternative extraction process (elution from NRL membrane). In this review, the chemical composition, physicochemical properties, toxicity, and other biological information such as osteogenesis, vasculogenesis, adhesion, proliferation, antimicrobial behavior, and antitumoral activity of NLS, as well as some of its medical instruments and devices are discussed. The progress in NLS applications in the biomedical field, more specifically in cell cultures, alternative animals, regular animals, and clinical trials are also discussed. An overview of the challenges and future directions of the applications of NLS and its derivatives in tissue engineering for hard and soft tissue regeneration is also given.

Herein is reported the case of a patient who presented initially with aortic insufficiency and a fistula between the sinus of Valsalva and right atrium when aged 31 years. Closure of the fistula and replacement of the aortic valve with a Starr-Edwards A-9 caged-ball prosthesis was performed in 1972, since when the valve has survived for 40 years without dysfunction. This is one of the longest follow ups of the Starr-Edwards prosthesis reported, and highlights the possibility of acceptable valve performance over long periods of time.

Natural latex serum (NLS) is one of the natural rubber latex fractions from Hevea brasiliensis tree, which is formed by centrifuged serum and is composed of proteins, acids, nucleotides, salts and carbohydrates. The proteins present in NLS have demonstrated several interesting biological properties, including angiogenic, healing, osteogenic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, in addition to inducing neovascularization, bone formation and osseointegration. Thus, we proposed to characterize NLS by physicochemical techniques and to investigate the biocompatibility by toxicological assays and safety test in Galleria mellonella. Infrared spectrum showed vibrational bands characteristic of amide I, II and III that are linked to the protein content, which was confirmed by the High Performance Liquid Chromatography profile and by the Electrophoresis analysis. This material did not exhibit hemolytic (rate <0.5%) and cytotoxic effects (viability >70%) and was able to enhance the proliferation of fibroblasts (>600%) after 3 days. The pronounced proliferative effect observed in fibroblast cells can be explained by the presence of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) like protein revealed by the Western blot test. Moreover, NLS did not provoke toxic effects (survival ∼ 80%) on the G. mellonella model, indicating that it is a biocompatible and safe material.

The incorporation of drugs and bioactive compounds in the natural rubber latex (NRL) matrix has been an alternative for the development of transdermal release membranes. Ibuprofen (IBF) is known to be used to treat inflammatory diseases, but when administered orally, high concentrations can cause some adverse problems. In this work, the incorporation of IBF in the NRL membranes was evaluated by physical-chemical, in vitro permeation, hemocompatibility and molecular modeling assays. In addition, the in vitro release profile of IBF in acid and basic media was analyzed during 96 h. The IBF-NRL membrane exhibited the absence of intermolecular bonding that could hinder drug release and presented compatible mechanical properties for applications as a cutaneous adhesive (0.58 and 1.12 MPa to Young's modulus and rupture tension, respectively). The IBF-NRL system did not present a significant hemolysis degree (1.67%) within 24 h. The release test indicated that in the first hours of the study, 48.5% IBF was released at basic pH and 22.5% at acidic pH, which is characteristic of a burst effect. Then, a stable release profile was observed until the end of the assay, with total IBF release of 60% in alkaline medium and 50% in acidic medium. The drug permeation results indicated that the IBF-NRL membranes can be used for the local skin treatment with permeation of 3.11% of IBF. Dynamic Molecular simulations indicated a pronounced electric dipole in the ionized form of IBF, which suggests a more effective interaction with water, explaining the efficient drug release in alkaline solutions. In general, the results demonstrate that the IBF-NRL membrane has great potential for a new adhesive that can be used for the treatment of inflammatory processes and injuries.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the impact of vacuum-assisted venous drainage (VAVD) on arterial pump flow in a simulated pediatric cardiopulmonary bypass circuit utilizing a centrifugal pump (CP) with an external arterial filter. METHODS: The simulation circuit consisted of a Quadrox-I Pediatric oxygenator, a Rotaflow CP (Maquet Cardiopulmonary AG, Rastatt, Germany), and a custom pediatric tubing set primed with Lactated Ringer's solution and packed red blood cells. Venous line pressure, reservoir pressure, and arterial flow were measured with VAVD turned off to record baseline values. Four other conditions were tested with progressively higher vacuum pressures (-20, -40, -60, and -80 mmHg) applied to the baseline cardiotomy pressure. An arterial filter was placed into the circuit and arterial flow was measured with the purge line in both open and closed positions. These trials were repeated at set arterial flow rates of 1500, 2000, and 2500 mL/min. RESULTS: The use of progressively higher vacuum caused a reduction in effective arterial flow from 1490±0.00 to 590±0.00, from 2020±0.01 to 1220±0.00, and from 2490±0.0 to 1830±0.01 mL/min. Effective forward flow decreased with increased levels of VAVD. CONCLUSION: The use of VAVD reduces arterial flow when a CP is used as the main arterial pump. The reduction in the forward arterial flow increases as the vacuum level increases. The loss of forward flow is further reduced when the arterial filter purge line is kept in the recommended open position.An independent flow probe is essential to monitor pump flow during cardiopulmonary bypass.

INTRODUCTION: Elucidating the molecules involved in the inflammatory process of chronic Chagas disease may allow identification of treatment targets. METHODS: The ex vivo phenotypic expression of chemokine receptors CCR1, CCR3, CCR4, CCR5, CXCR2, CXCR3, CXCR4, and CXCR5 on the CD4+ and CD8+ T-cells of patients with chronic Chagas cardiomyopathy of varying severity was evaluated using flow cytometry. RESULTS: Differential expression of CD4+CCR3+ and CD8+CCR4+ T-cells was observed in patients with mild cardiac involvement compared, respectively, with patients with severe cardiac and asymptomatic forms of Chagas disease. CONCLUSIONS: These receptors are possibly involved in the pathogenesis of chronic Chagas cardiomyopathy.

BACKGROUND: Myocardial revascularization surgery is the best treatment for dyalitic patients with multivessel coronary disease. However, the procedure still has high morbidity and mortality. The use of extracorporeal circulation (ECC) can have a negative impact on the in-hospital outcomes of these patients. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the differences between the techniques with ECC and without ECC during the in-hospital course of dialytic patients who underwent surgical myocardial revascularization. METHODS: Unicentric study on 102 consecutive, unselected dialytic patients, who underwent myocardial revascularization surgery in a tertiary university hospital from 2007 to 2014. RESULTS: Sixty-three patients underwent surgery with ECC and 39 without ECC. A high prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors was found in both groups, without statistically significant difference between them. The group "without ECC" had greater number of revascularizations (2.4 vs. 1.7; p <0.0001) and increased need for blood components (77.7% vs. 25.6%; p <0.0001) and inotropic support (82.5% vs 35.8%; p <0.0001). In the postoperative course, the group "without ECC" required less vasoactive drugs, (61.5% vs. 82.5%; p = 0.0340) and shorter time of mechanical ventilation (13.0 hours vs. 36,3 hours, p = 0.0217), had higher extubation rates in the operating room (58.9% vs. 23.8%, p = 0.0006), lower infection rates (7.6% vs. 28.5%; p = 0.0120), and shorter ICU stay (5.2 days vs. 8.1 days; p = 0.0054) as compared with the group with ECC surgery. No difference in mortality was found between the groups. CONCLUSION: Myocardial revascularization with ECC in patients on dialysis resulted in higher morbidity in the perioperative period in comparison with the procedure without ECC, with no difference in mortality though.

RESUMEN

A essência da extensão universitária se pauta na emancipação da sociedade, culminando na indissociabilidade entre ensino, pesquisa e extensão, aspecto de interesse das instituições de ensino superior e dos discentes, visando o exercício da cidadania. Assim, iniciativas que destaquem a relação entre pesquisa e extensão são de extrema relevância. Nesse contexto, a International Federation of Medical Students Associations of Brazil (IFMSA Brazil) é uma organização que trabalha com intuito de fortalecer o tripé universitário e engajar novas lideranças nessas áreas. O principal objetivo deste estudo é discorrer sobre a atuação do time nacional de publicação, pesquisa e extensão da IFMSA Brazil da gestão 2019 ­ 2020 como recurso humano para formação de líderes em pesquisa e extensão, analisando o impacto deste trabalho no âmbito estudantil e universitário, da saúde pública e da comunidade. Este estudo observacional descritivo e retrospectivo tem como objeto de análise as atividades realizadas por este time, no período entre dezembro de 2019 a junho de 2020, em prol da formação de lideranças estudantil no cenário da pesquisa e extensão. Com isso, este trabalho demonstra como esse time não apenas enaltece o acesso à educação em pesquisa e em extensão, através de capacitações, divulgação de oportunidades, materiais, entre outras estratégias, mas também fomenta a liderança estudantil em 220 escolas médicas com o propósito de consolidar a saúde pública, a tradução do conhecimento, a responsabilidade social e o letramento em saúde.

Natural rubber latex (NRL) is a flexible biomembrane that possesses angiogenic properties and has recently been used for guided bone regeneration, enhancing healing without fibrous tissue, allergies or rejection. Calcium phosphate (Ca/P) ceramics have chemical, biological, and mechanical properties similar to mineral phase of bone, and ability to bond to the host tissue, although it can disperse from where it is applied. Therefore, to create a composite that could enhance the properties of both materials, NRL biomembranes were coated with Ca/P. NRL biomembranes were soaked in 1.5 times concentrated SBF solution for seven days, avoiding the use of high temperatures. SEM showed that Ca/P has been coated in NRL biomembrane, XRD showed low crystallinity and FTIR showed that is the carbonated type B. Furthermore, hemolysis of erythrocytes, quantified spectrophotometrically using materials (Ca/P, NRL, and NRL + Ca/P) showed no hemolytic effects up to 0.125 mg/mL (compounds and mixtures), indicating no detectable disturbance of the red blood cell membranes. The results show that the biomimetic is an appropriate method to coat NRL with Ca/P without using high temperatures, aiming a new biomembrane to improve guided bone regeneration.

OBJECTIVE: Coronary artery bypass grafting is currently the best treatment for dialysis patients with multivessel coronary artery involvement. Vasoplegic syndrome of inflammatory etiology constitutes an important postoperative complication, with highly negative impact on prognosis. Considering that these patients have an intrinsic inflammatory response exacerbation, our goal was to evaluate the incidence and mortality of vasoplegic syndrome after myocardial revascularization in this group. METHODS: A retrospective, single-center study of 50 consecutive and non-selected dialysis patients who underwent myocardial revascularization in a tertiary university hospital, from 2007 to 2012. The patients were divided into 2 groups, according to the use of cardiopulmonary bypass or not (off-pump coronary artery bypass). The incidence and mortality of vasoplegic syndrome were analyzed. The subgroup of vasoplegic patients was studied separately. RESULTS: There were no preoperative demographic differences between the cardiopulmonary bypass (n=20) and off-pump coronary artery bypass (n=30) group. Intraoperative data showed a greater number of distal coronary arteries anastomosis (2.8 vs. 1.8, P<0.0001) and higher transfusion rates (65% vs. 23%, P=0.008) in the cardiopulmonary bypass group. Vasoplegia incidence was statistically higher (P=0.0124) in the cardiopulmonary bypass group (30%) compared to the off-pump coronary artery bypass group (3%). Vasoplegia mortality was 50% in the cardiopulmonary bypass group and 0% in the off-pump coronary artery bypass group. The vasoplegic subgroup analysis showed no statistically significant clinical differences. CONCLUSION: Cardiopulmonary bypass increased the risk for developing postoperative vasoplegic syndrome after coronary artery bypass grafting in patients with dialysis-dependent chronic renal failure.

Abstract Objective: To analyze the impact of vacuum-assisted venous drainage (VAVD) on arterial pump flow in a simulated pediatric cardiopulmonary bypass circuit utilizing a centrifugal pump (CP) with an external arterial filter. Methods: The simulation circuit consisted of a Quadrox-I Pediatric oxygenator, a Rotaflow CP (Maquet Cardiopulmonary AG, Rastatt, Germany), and a custom pediatric tubing set primed with Lactated Ringer's solution and packed red blood cells. Venous line pressure, reservoir pressure, and arterial flow were measured with VAVD turned off to record baseline values. Four other conditions were tested with progressively higher vacuum pressures (-20, -40, -60, and -80 mmHg) applied to the baseline cardiotomy pressure. An arterial filter was placed into the circuit and arterial flow was measured with the purge line in both open and closed positions. These trials were repeated at set arterial flow rates of 1500, 2000, and 2500 mL/min. Results: The use of progressively higher vacuum caused a reduction in effective arterial flow from 1490±0.00 to 590±0.00, from 2020±0.01 to 1220±0.00, and from 2490±0.0 to 1830±0.01 mL/min. Effective forward flow decreased with increased levels of VAVD. Conclusion: The use of VAVD reduces arterial flow when a CP is used as the main arterial pump. The reduction in the forward arterial flow increases as the vacuum level increases. The loss of forward flow is further reduced when the arterial filter purge line is kept in the recommended open position. An independent flow probe is essential to monitor pump flow during cardiopulmonary bypass.
