RESUMEN

The chemical structure and possible hydro-oxidation of LaNiO(3-delta) films were studied by means of tuneable high-energy X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation. It was shown that the hydroxyl-containing phase, located near the film surface, may be attributed to the lanthanum and nickel hydroxide species. The thickness of a hydroxide-enriched layer was estimated from the oxide/hydroxide ratio measured at normal and grazing conditions. The hydroxide layer thickness was about 2 nm for step and/or exponential hydroxide spatial distribution.

RESUMEN

The electrogenic Na+/HCO3- cotransporter (NBCe1) has been identified as a key player for regulation of intracellular pH in several cell types. The present study was undertaken to determine expression and subcellular localization of the NH2-terminal solute carrier (SLC) 4A4 variants NBCe1-A and NBCe1-B in mouse brain using variant-specific antibodies by immunohistochemistry and immunoelectron microscopy. In addition, distribution of NBCe1 variants and activity-dependent regulation was investigated in mouse embryonic day 17.5 (E17.5) hippocampal primary cultures in vitro. The results showed NBCe1-A and NBCe1-B transcript expression in the mouse olfactory bulb, cerebral cortex, hippocampus and cerebellum. NBCe1-A was predominantly expressed in Purkinje cells, granule cells of the dentate gyrus, non-pyramidal cell bodies in cerebral cortex, and in periglomerular and mitral cells in the olfactory bulb. Pyramidal neurons in cerebral cortex and apical cell dendrites in the hippocampus were stained for both NBCe1-A and NBCe1-B. Moreover, NBCe1-B was present in Bergmann glia. At the ultrastructural level, NBCe1-B was preferentially expressed in perivascular astroglial lamellae, whereas both NBCe1 NH2-terminal variants were localized in pre- and postsynaptic compartments. Except for the olfactory bulb, NBCe1-A was always colocalized with calbindin. Treatment of E17.5 primary hippocampal cultures with KCl, showed dramatic downregulation of NBCe1-B mRNA and protein after 60 min, whereas NBCe1-A expression remained unchanged. These data demonstrate for the first time distinct cellular distribution of NBCe1 NH2-terminal variants in mouse brain. NBCe1 may be involved in neuronal modulation, and pH regulation during neuronal activity.

RESUMEN

Constant observation (CO) is a technique in which continuous one-to-one monitoring is used to assure the safety and well-being of an individual patient or others. This study reviewed 115 patient charts in a tertiary-care hospital to determine the correlates and predictors of the financial cost of CO. The mean duration for CO was 13.9 days with a median of 7.5 days. The cost average was $3,415 per incident with a range of $144-$68,500. The median cost was $1,872. The most common diagnosis was organic mental syndrome. Significant predictors of CO were disorientation, psychiatric medication used, and absence of alcohol use.

RESUMEN

The authors sought to determine whether a mobile crisis intervention service can effect cost savings by diverting patients from hospital admission into community-based treatment. They followed 50 consenting adult psychiatric patients for 6 months from the first day they were seen by the crisis intervention service. At the first visit, the crisis team obtained data to assess each patient's degree of risk for hospitalization. Investigators then kept a day-by-day record of every psychiatric treatment received by each patient, in an effort to determine the cost effectiveness of crisis intervention. The authors present evidence that crisis intervention permits some patients who would otherwise have been hospitalized to remain in the community and that savings thus realized exceed the expense of crisis intervention.

RESUMEN

Visual perception was evaluated with standard tests for 26 hospitalized patients with schizophrenia, 23 hospitalized patients with affective disorders, and 60 control subjects. Both patient groups differed significantly from the control group on low amplitude of accommodation, esophoria or exophoria, vergence duction suppression, and convergence and divergence recovery ductions. Only the affective group showed significantly reduced fusion at near distance, and only the schizophrenic group differed significantly from control subjects on disorganized left apex formation. These findings appear to confirm the presence of visual perceptual disorders that can cause disability in psychiatric patients, with important research and rehabilitation implications.

RESUMEN

The purpose of this study was to assess the suicide rate in people infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in the general hospital population. A retrospective study of 2,363 psychiatric consultations was done in 1989 and 1990 at an urban municipal teaching hospital in New York City. The sample included 2,363 patients admitted to adult general care from January 1, 1989, to December 31, 1990, for whom consultations were requested from the consultation-liaison psychiatry service. Suicidal behavior was the reason for consultation in 21.8% of HIV-positive persons and in 19.8% of persons with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. It was the reason for consultation in only 13.9% of persons with unknown HIV serostatus. This difference is statistically significant. The authors conclude that HIV seropositivity may be a significant risk factor for suicide in the general hospital patient population.
