RESUMEN

We investigate laser ablation of crystalline silicon induced by a femtosecond optical vortex beam, addressing how beam properties can be obtained by analyzing the ablation crater. The morphology of the surface structures formed in the annular crater surface allows direct visualization of the beam polarization, while analysis of the crater size provides beam spot parameters. We also determine the diverse threshold fluences for the formation of various complex microstructures generated within the annular laser spot on the silicon sample. Our analysis indicates an incubation behavior of the threshold fluence as a function of the number of laser pulses, independent of the optical vortex polarization, in weak focusing conditions.

RESUMEN

In the present study the authors, after a short historical description of the Basedow-Graves' disease, describe their case-study gathered over the last five years. They mention the most widely accepted hypothesis regarding disease's etiology, strongly linked to autoimmune disorders, and the role that some viral agents (Coksackie B and HTLV-II) may have in initiating autoantibody production and T cells activation in genetically predisposed individuals. Basic and clinical aspects of the diagnosis and disease treatment, highlighting the use of thyroidectomy, are addressed. They conclude that total thyroidectomy represents today the treatment of choice, which, after appropriate preparation to reach the euthyroidism condition, can ensure a successful cure.

RESUMEN

The authors report 9 cases of gastric carcinomas characterized by a prominent neutrophilic infiltration of the stroma. These tumors (8 of intestinal type, 1 of diffuse type) showed a pushing growth pattern. Metastatic involvement of regional lymph nodes was seen in 5 cases. The metastatic foci were associated with heavy neutrophilia as well. There was no histologic evidence of Helicobacter pylori infection, whereas various degrees of multifocal intestinal metaplasia were present in the background mucosa. Based on histologic and histochemical results, there were no apparent causes due to other infectious agents responsible for the neutrophil-rich gastric carcinomas. Some of intraepithelial and stromal neutrophils exhibited apoptotic changes, such as chromatin condensation and cell shrinkage, and were TUNEL-positive. Electron microscopy disclosed apoptotic neutrophils in cytoplasmic vacuoles of tumor cells, a finding suggestive of neutrophil-tumor cell phagocytosis (cannibalism). Different stages of neutrophil apoptosis were also shown by electron microscopy and the ultrastructural findings were compared to those described in experimental models, both in vivo and in vitro.

RESUMEN

We report a case of pancreatic pseudocyst secondary to acute necrotizing pancreatitis treated with open cystogastrostomy. Following a literature review, we stress the enormous benefits offered by modern diagnostic techniques, and especially imaging techniques, for the diagnosis and monitoring of this disease. Treatment should be delayed for at least six weeks, following which the drainage by open surgery offers the best results and lowest morbidity and mortality, followed by laparoscopy and endoscopy, indicated in particular cases and in patients where open surgery is contraindicated.

RESUMEN

The authors present two cases of mucocele of the appendix and discuss them in relation to the literature and the clinical features of this disease. They clarify the definition of mucocele as an intraluminal accumulation of mucus in the appendix, and concentrate on the observable pathological processes, agreeing on the higher frequency of mucinous cystadenoma and the possibility that mucocele can develop into peritoneal pseudomyxoma or degenerate into cystadenocarcinoma. They also note that most diagnoses are made intra-operatively during appendectomy, and that, in cases suspected preoperatively, thorough investigation with imaging techniques is very important in order to plan the best treatment.

RESUMEN

We study hydrated model membranes, consisting of stacked bilayers of 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine lipids, using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy. Terahertz spectroscopy enables the investigation of water dynamics, owing to its sensitivity to dielectric relaxation processes associated with water reorientation. By controlling the number of water molecules per lipid molecule in the system, we elucidate how the interplay between the model membrane and water molecules results in different water dynamics. For decreasing hydration levels, we observe the appearance of new types of water dynamics: the collective bulklike dynamics become less pronounced, whereas an increased amount of both very slowly reorienting (i.e., irrotational) and very rapidly reorienting (i.e., fast) water molecules appear. Temperature-dependent measurements reveal the interconversion between the three distinct types of water present in the system.

RESUMEN

Granuloma is a focal, compact collection of inflammatory cells in which mononuclear phagocytes predominate. The authors report 9 cases of papillary-tubular gastric adenocarcinomas characterized by mature granulomas associated with recent microhemorrhages. Mature granulomas were composed of foamy, CD68-positive histiocytes with occasional giant cells. Hemosiderin-containing macrophages were present in the tumor stroma, suggesting phagocytosis of erythrocytes. Under electron microscopy, mature (nonepithelioid) granulomas and clusters containing 1 macrophage and 1-3 eosinophils were found. This study provides morphological examples of skewed type II macrophage infiltration in gastric adenocarcinomas that is involved in scavenging activity, particularly erythrophagocytosis, formation of mature (nonepithelioid granulomas), and heterotypic aggregation with eosinophils.

RESUMEN

We report preliminary results on the optical driving and spectroscopic detection of Raman-active features in thin films of the high-temperature superconductor YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7) in its normal phase by means of coherent Stokes and anti-Stokes Raman scattering, in a reflection geometry. Reference measurements on germanium are also reported. We observe phonon resonances which interfere coherently with a broad electronic resonance centered at zero frequency, giving rise to characteristic asymmetric spectral features. Our measurements provide a first step towards applying nonlinear optical wave-mixing spectroscopy to correlated electron systems.

RESUMEN

We investigate both theoretically and experimentally the rotational dynamics of micrometric droplets of dye-doped and pure liquid crystal induced by circularly and elliptically polarized laser light. The droplets are dispersed in water and trapped in the focus of the laser beam. Since the optical torque acting on the molecular director is known to be strongly enhanced in light-absorbing dye-doped materials, the question arises whether a similar enhancement takes place also for the overall optical torque acting on the whole droplets. We searched for such enhancement by measuring and comparing the rotation speed of dye-doped droplets induced by a laser beam having a wavelength either inside or outside the dye absorption band, and also comparing it with the rotation of pure liquid crystal droplets. No enhancement was found, confirming that photoinduced dye effects are only associated with an internal exchange of angular momentum between orientational and translational degrees of freedom of matter. Our result provides also direct experimental proof of the existence of a photoinduced stress tensor in the illuminated dye-doped liquid crystal. Finally, peculiar photoinduced dynamical effects are predicted to occur in droplets in which the molecular director is not rigidly locked to the flow, but so far they could not be observed.

RESUMEN

By measuring the time-resolved fluorescence depolarization as a function of light excitation wavelength we address the question of a possible photoinduced orientational randomization of amino-anthraquinone dyes in liquid solutions. We find no significant dependence within the experimental uncertainties of both the initial molecule anisotropy and of the subsequent rotational diffusion dynamics on the photon energy. This indicates that this effect, if present, must be very small. A simple model of photoinduced local heating and corresponding enhanced rotational diffusion is in accordance with this result. This null result rules out some recent proposals that photoinduced local heating may contribute significantly to molecular reorientation effects in different materials. A small but statistically significant effect of photon energy is instead found in the excited-state lifetime of the dye.

RESUMEN

To explain the large photoinduced molecular reorientation phenomena observed in dye-doped liquids and liquid crystals, the hypothesis was formed that the rotational mobility of dye molecules is strongly altered during their electronic excitation. Here, we report the direct measurement of a 30%-50% mobility decrease of photoexcited anthraquinone dye molecules dissolved in a cyanophenyl liquid host. This mobility reduction is ascribed to an excited-state reinforcement of intermolecular hydrogen bonding. These results provide fully independent evidence for the validity of current models of the photoinduced reorientation and a working demonstration of the design concepts of "fluctuating-friction" molecular motors. We propose that a light-induced modulation of molecular mobility associated with electronic photoexcitation is of general relevance to the behavior of photosensitive organic materials, currently investigated for applications in optical data storage, liquid-crystal displays, and organic optoelectronic devices.

RESUMEN

AIMS: To evaluate the advantages and limits of one day surgery operations performed between January 1990 and December 2000. METHODS: Pre-operative study of out patients with indications to surgical treatment with short-stay hospitalisation and research of criteria of feasibility of day-surgical program: a) morning hospitalisation; b) surgical intervention; c) post-operative control; d) night control; e) careful evaluation of admission 24 hour after operation and instruction for house-therapy; f) program of follow-up (7 and 14 days after operation). RESULTS: Mortality 0%; immediate post-operative complications 1.8%; post-operative sequelae (one year after surgery): 0.5%; high satisfaction gradient of patients one year after treatment: 89%. DISCUSSION: The Day-Surgery seems to be, after ten years of experience, available in high number of patients, with progressive extension of indications to ever more surgical fields and results very satisfactory, in term of cost-effectiveness too, with an high compliance of the patients to surgical program.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Various nuclear envelope derivatives, such as the annulate lamellae, the intranuclear tubules as well as the nuclear projections and pockets may be observed electron microscopically in tumour cells. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In a series of eight gastric adenocarcinomas, ultrastructural features of nuclear envelope changes were analyzed and correlated to the biology of the tumours. RESULTS: Histologically, three tumours were intestinal-type adenocarcinomas and showed annulate lamellae in the cytoplasm of some tumor cells. Five tumors were mixed-type adenocarcinomas, with a solid growth pattern; two of these tumours were characterized by the presence of intranuclear tubules, whereas the remaining three tumours exhibited nuclear pockets and projections. Seven out of eight patients died due to metastatic disease during the follow-up period (median 31 months). CONCLUSION: Ultrastructural evaluation of pleomorphism of the nuclear envelope may be an ancillary method for the pathologist in the study of nuclear grading of gastric carcinomas.

RESUMEN

We demonstrate experimentally an optical process in which the spin angular momentum carried by a circularly polarized light beam is converted into orbital angular momentum, leading to the generation of helical modes with a wave-front helicity controlled by the input polarization. This phenomenon requires the interaction of light with matter that is both optically inhomogeneous and anisotropic. The underlying physics is also associated with the so-called Pancharatnam-Berry geometrical phases involved in any inhomogeneous transformation of the optical polarization.

RESUMEN

Deuterium-hydrogen isotopic substitution was found to approximately double the magnitude of the giant optical nonlinearity of dye-doped nematic liquid crystals arising from photoinduced molecular reorientation. In accordance with the predictions of our model, this doubling is well correlated with the increase in a characteristic decay time of the electronically excited dye anisotropy, as measured with time-resolved fluorescence. A similar isotopic effect is predicted for the optical Kerr nonlinearity of dyed isotropic liquids.
