RESUMEN

Peugeot-ONF Forest Carbon Sink Project, located at Fazenda São Nicolau (FSN) in Cotriguaçu Municipality, is a public-private initiative and has been supported by several French and Brazilian institutions. Its Research Program includes studies aiming Biodiversity Conservation, Ecology, Carbon Dynamics, Silvicultural Techniques. FSN comprises a high richness of species with more than 20 new species of beetles (Histeridae, Scarabaeidae e Melolonthidae) described among them one endemic genus. A quick overview of the SuperFamily Scarabaeoidea within the FSN area registered 260 species which nearly 100 species might be new to Science. One new species of fish as well as research with amphibian toxins as tools to treat cancer and malaria are also done with material collected at the FSN. Ecology of the decomposer´s fauna at reforestation sites showed that after 10 years, such places were more similar to native forest sites than pastures or abandoned pastures. Finally large mammals studies indicated that many large mammals use FSN as a refuge. We stress the importance to keep the FSN natural habitats linked with the Juruena National Park. The FSN contour is under heavy deforestation which will increase the species loss and turn FSN in one of the few major natural vegetation fragments.

RESUMEN

To establish whether botulinum A toxin (BTX-A) acts on modifying reciprocal inhibition between forearm muscles in spasticity, 20 patients with post-stroke upper limb spasticity lasting for more than 1 year were studied. Clinical examination, physiotherapeutic evaluation, standardized video-tape assessment and electrophysiological testing (flexor carpi radialis muscle M and H responses with study of reciprocal inhibition) were performed at baseline and 2 weeks, 1, 2, 3, 4 months after BTX-A treatment. BTX-A induced a significant decrease of tone and an improvement of motility and functional status, with a significant decrease of the M wave and the H reflex. The reduction in both inhibitory phases of reciprocal inhibition did not change after BTX-A treatment differently from that reported in upper limb dystonia. These findings indicate that the efficacy of BTX-A in upper limb spasticity is mainly due to peripheral effects.

RESUMEN

Behavioral distress and dysfunctions of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axis play a central role in alcohol abuse. Omega-3 fatty acids are proposed as having antistress, regulatory effects on HPA responsiveness, but a possible protective role in ethanol addiction is unexplored.A randomized, doubleblind, placebo-controlled trial was performed in male alcoholics undergoing residential rehabilitation program, to evaluate the effects of 3-week supplementation with fish-oil providing eicosapentaenoic (60 mg/day) and docosahexaenoic acid (252 mg/day) on perceived stress/anxiety and HPA activity, assessed by measuring saliva basal cortisol levels at various daytimes (0730 h, 1130 h, 1600 h, 2000 h, and 2400 h) and the acute cortisol response to Trier Social Stress Test. Results showed that in supplemented subjects, before versus after decrease of stress/anxiety ratings was accompanied by reduction of cortisol basal levels throughout the day; no changes were observed in placebo group. At the end of intervention, amplitude, and duration of stress-evoked cortisol response did not differ between groups; however, the peak of cortisol response was temporally anticipated in supplemented subjects. In conclusion, an elevated omega-3 intake may reduce distress symptoms and basal cortisol secretion in abstinent alcoholics, thus providing a valid subsidiary measure to increase the efficacy of rehabilitation programs in ethanol addicts.

RESUMEN

The snout reflex appeared to be electrophysiologically present in a great majority of normal subjects. Nevertheless, a facilitation of the R2 responses of the snout reflex was found in parkinsonian patients while in pseudobulbar patients an augmentation of the R1 took place. The snout reflex, therefore, seemed to behave in a similar way as the blink reflex. In order to explain the reported findings the authors took into account the different effects of the lesions of the lateral and ventral motor system upon the oligo- and multisynaptic reflexes.

RESUMEN

A case of sporadic adult-onset centronuclear myopathy is presented. EMG was myopathic and nerve conduction study entirely normal. Single-fiber electromyography showed a normal percentage of potential pairs with abnormal jitter, slightly increased mean jitter value, no blocking and normal fiber density. Somatosensory and motor evoked potentials were within the normal limits. While it is still a subject of debate whether centronuclear myopathy is neuropathic or myopathic in origin, our findings are against peripheral nerve and CNS involvement.

RESUMEN

Crush of sciatic nerve in rabbits supported by morphologic and electrophysiologic data was used to evaluate the effects of ACTH4-10 on nerve fiber regeneration. Treated animals showed a statistically significant higher regeneration rate than did control rabbits. Fiber density and mean diameters of myelinated nerve fibers were measured in semithin nerve sections at 1 and 3 cm distal from the crushed point at three different time points. Nerve fiber density results were higher in ACTH4-10-than in vehicle-treated rabbits. This difference showed an unequivocal trend and attained a statistically significant level in the sections 3 cm distal from the crush. ACTH4-10 seemed therefore to have a beneficial effect on nerve fiber regeneration.

RESUMEN

Skeletal muscle changes were evaluated in patients suffering from hemiparesis after stroke. Concentric needle EMG and single fiber EMG of the paretic gastrocnemius medialis muscle were performed. Maximal amplitude of H, T and M responses in calf muscles of both the affected and the unaffected sides were determined by usual electrophysiological techniques. Muscle biopsy of the lateral gastrocnemius muscle of the affected side was performed to determine the distribution of fiber types and fiber sizes. Fibrillation activity and positive sharp waves occurred in paretic muscles in patients with more recent hemiparesis while the duration of motor unit potentials was prolonged in patients with long-lasting disease. The H/M ratio was increased on the paretic side. The percentage of type 1 fibers was augmented in most patients with normal mean diameter and low atrophy factor. The percentage of type 2 fibers was reduced with decreased mean diameters and with a high atrophy factor. Such changes may be related to inactivity or transsynaptic degeneration of type 2 motoneurons as a consequence of the interruption of the corticospinal tract. Increased percentage of type 1 fibers may be due to a collateral reinnervation process or a motor unit type transformation.
