OBJECTIVE: Understand if cancer fatalism among adult social media users in the United States is linked to social media informational awareness and if the relationship varies by education level. METHODS: Cross-sectional data from the 2022 Health Information National Trends Survey (n = 3,948) were analyzed using multivariable linear probability models. The study population was defined as social media users active within the past year. The outcome variable was cancer fatalism and the predictor variables were social media informational awareness and education level. RESULTS: Participants with low social media informational awareness were 9% (95% CI = 3, 15), 6% (95% CI = 1, 11), and 21% (95% CI = 14, 27) percentage points more likely to agree that it seems like everything causes cancer, you cannot lower your chances of getting cancer, and there are too many cancer prevention recommendations to follow, respectively. Participants with a college degree or higher level of education and who reported high social media informational awareness were the least likely to agree that everything causes cancer (60%; 95% CI = 54, 66), you cannot lower your chances of getting cancer (14%; 95% CI = 10, 19), and there are too many cancer prevention recommendations to follow (52%; 95% CI = 46, 59). CONCLUSION: Social media informational awareness was associated with lower levels of cancer fatalism among adult social media users. College graduates with high social media informational awareness were the least likely to report cancer fatalism.

By infiltrating and retaining stormwater, Blue-Green Infrastructure (BGI) can help to reduce Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs), one of the main causes of urban water pollution. Several studies have evaluated the ability of individual BGI types to reduce CSOs; however, the effect of combining these elements, likely to occur in reality, has not yet been thoroughly evaluated. Moreover, the CSO volume reduction potential of relevant components of the urban drainage system, such as detention ponds, has not been quantified using hydrological models. This study presents a systematic way to assess the potential of BGI combinations to mitigate CSO discharge in a catchment near Zurich (Switzerland). Sixty BGI combinations, including four BGI elements (bioretention cells, permeable pavement, green roofs, and detention ponds) and four different implementation rates (25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% of the available sewer catchment area) are evaluated for four runoff routing schemes. Results reveal that BGI combinations can provide substantial CSO volume reductions; however, combinations including detention ponds can potentially increase CSO frequency, due to runoff prolongation. When runoff from upstream areas is routed to the BGI, the CSO discharge reductions from combinations of BGI elements differ from the cumulative CSO discharge reductions achieved by individual BGI types, indicating that the sum of effects from individual BGI types cannot accurately predict CSO discharge in combined BGI scenarios. Moreover, larger BGI implementation areas are not consistently more cost-effective than small implementation areas, since the additional CSO volume reduction does not outweigh the additional costs. The best-performing BGI combination depends on the desired objective, being CSO volume reduction, CSO frequency reduction or cost-effectiveness. This study emphasizes the importance of BGI combinations and detention ponds in CSO mitigation plans, highlighting their critical factors-BGI types, implementation area, and runoff routing- and offering a novel and systematic approach to develop tailored BGI strategies for urban catchments facing CSO challenges.

Climate change is currently reshaping precipitation patterns, intensifying extremes, and altering runoff dynamics. Particularly susceptible to these impacts are combined sewer systems (CSS), which convey both stormwater and wastewater and can lead to combined sewer overflow (CSO) discharges during heavy rainfall. Green infrastructure (GI) can help mitigate these discharges and enhance system resilience under historical conditions; however, the quantification of its effect on resilience in a future climate remains unknown in the literature. This study employs a modified Global Resilience Analysis (GRA) framework for continuous simulation to quantify the impact of climate change on CSS resilience, particularly CSOs. The study assesses the efficacy of GI interventions (green roofs, permeable pavements, and bioretention cells) under diverse future rainfall scenarios based on EURO-CORDEX regional climate models (2085-2099) and three Representative Concentration Pathways (2.6, 4.5, 8.5 W/m2). The findings underscore a general decline in resilience indices across the future rainfall scenarios considered. Notably, the total yearly CSO discharge volume increases by a range of 145 % to 256 % in response to different rainfall scenarios. While GI proves effective in increasing resilience, it falls short of offsetting the impacts of climate change. Among the GI options assessed, green roofs routed to pervious areas exhibit the highest adaptive capacity, ranging from 9 % to 22 % at a system level, followed by permeable pavements with an adaptation capacity between 7 and 13 %. By linking the effects of future rainfall scenarios on CSO performance, this study contributes to understanding GI's potential as a strategic tool for enhancing urban resilience.

In the year 2002, DNA loss model (DNA-LM) postulated that neuropeptide genes to emerged through codons loss via the repair of damaged DNA from ancestral gene namely Neuropeptide Precursor Predictive (NPP), which organization correspond two or more neuropeptides precursors evolutive related. The DNA-LM was elaborated according to amino acids homology among LWamide, APGWamide, red pigment-concentrating hormone (RPCH), adipokinetic hormones (AKHs) and in silico APGW/RPCH NPPAPGW/AKH NPP were proposed. With the above principle, it was proposed the evolution of corazonin (CRZ), gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), AKH, and AKH/CRZ (ACP), but any NPP never was considered. However, the evolutive relation via DNA-LM among these neuropeptides precursors not has been established yet. Therefore, the transcriptomes from crabs Callinectes toxotes and Callinectes arcuatus were used to characterized ACP and partial CRZ precursors, respectively. BLAST alignment with APGW/RPCH NPP and APGW/AKH NPP allow identified similar NPP in the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis and other invertebrates. Moreover, three bioinformatics algorithms and manual verification were used to purify 13,778 sequences, generating a database with 719 neuropeptide precursors. Phylogenetic trees with the DNA-LM parameters showed that some ACP, CRZ, AKH2 and two NPP share nodes with GnRH from vertebrates and some of this neuropeptide had nodes in invertebrates. Whereas the phylogenetic tree with standard parameters do not showed previous node pattern. Robinson-Foulds metric corroborates the differences among phylogenetic trees. Homology relationship showed four putative orthogroups; AKH4, CRZ, and protostomes GnRH had individual group. This is the first demonstration of NPP in species and would explain the evolution neuropeptide families by the DNA-LM.

BACKGROUND: Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease leading to nonscarring hair loss on the scalp or body. There are different treatments including immunosuppressants, hair growth stimulants, and contact immunotherapy. OBJECTIVES: To assess the benefits and harms of the treatments for alopecia areata (AA), alopecia totalis (AT), and alopecia universalis (AU) in children and adults. SEARCH METHODS: The Cochrane Skin Specialised Register, CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Embase, ClinicalTrials.gov and WHO ICTRP were searched up to July 2022. SELECTION CRITERIA: We included randomised controlled trials (RCTs) that evaluated classical immunosuppressants, biologics, small molecule inhibitors, contact immunotherapy, hair growth stimulants, and other therapies in paediatric and adult populations with AA. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: We used the standard procedures expected by Cochrane including assessment of risks of bias using RoB2 and the certainty of the evidence using GRADE. The primary outcomes were short-term hair regrowth ≥ 75% (between 12 and 26 weeks of follow-up), and incidence of serious adverse events. The secondary outcomes were long-term hair regrowth ≥ 75% (greater than 26 weeks of follow-up) and health-related quality of life. We could not perform a network meta-analysis as very few trials compared the same treatments. We presented direct comparisons and made a narrative description of the findings. MAIN RESULTS: We included 63 studies that tested 47 different treatments in 4817 randomised participants. All trials used a parallel-group design except one that used a cross-over design. The mean sample size was 78 participants. All trials recruited outpatients from dermatology clinics. Participants were between 2 and 74 years old. The trials included patients with AA (n = 25), AT (n = 1), AU (n = 1), mixed cases (n = 31), and unclear types of alopecia (n = 4). Thirty-three out of 63 studies (52.3%) reported the proportion of participants achieving short-term hair regrowth ≥ 75% (between 12 and 26 weeks). Forty-seven studies (74.6%) reported serious adverse events and only one study (1.5%) reported health-related quality of life. Five studies (7.9%) reported the proportion of participants with long-term hair regrowth ≥ 75% (greater than 26 weeks). Amongst the variety of interventions found, we prioritised some groups of interventions for their relevance to clinical practice: systemic therapies (classical immunosuppressants, biologics, and small molecule inhibitors), and local therapies (intralesional corticosteroids, topical small molecule inhibitors, contact immunotherapy, hair growth stimulants and cryotherapy). Considering only the prioritised interventions, 14 studies from 12 comparisons reported short-term hair regrowth ≥ 75% and 22 studies from 10 comparisons reported serious adverse events (18 reported zero events and 4 reported at least one). One study (1 comparison) reported quality of life, and two studies (1 comparison) reported long-term hair regrowth ≥ 75%. For the main outcome of short-term hair regrowth ≥ 75%, the evidence is very uncertain about the effect of oral prednisolone or cyclosporine versus placebo (RR 4.68, 95% CI 0.57 to 38.27; 79 participants; 2 studies; very low-certainty evidence), intralesional betamethasone or triamcinolone versus placebo (RR 13.84, 95% CI 0.87 to 219.76; 231 participants; 1 study; very low-certainty evidence), oral ruxolitinib versus oral tofacitinib (RR 1.08, 95% CI 0.77 to 1.52; 80 participants; 1 study; very low-certainty evidence), diphencyprone or squaric acid dibutil ester versus placebo (RR 1.16, 95% CI 0.79 to 1.71; 99 participants; 1 study; very-low-certainty evidence), diphencyprone or squaric acid dibutyl ester versus topical minoxidil (RR 1.16, 95% CI 0.79 to 1.71; 99 participants; 1 study; very low-certainty evidence), diphencyprone plus topical minoxidil versus diphencyprone (RR 0.67, 95% CI 0.13 to 3.44; 30 participants; 1 study; very low-certainty evidence), topical minoxidil 1% and 2% versus placebo (RR 2.31, 95% CI 1.34 to 3.96; 202 participants; 2 studies; very low-certainty evidence) and cryotherapy versus fractional CO2 laser (RR 0.31, 95% CI 0.11 to 0.86; 80 participants; 1 study; very low-certainty evidence). The evidence suggests oral betamethasone may increase short-term hair regrowth ≥ 75% compared to prednisolone or azathioprine (RR 1.67, 95% CI 0.96 to 2.88; 80 participants; 2 studies; low-certainty evidence). There may be little to no difference between subcutaneous dupilumab and placebo in short-term hair regrowth ≥ 75% (RR 3.59, 95% CI 0.19 to 66.22; 60 participants; 1 study; low-certainty evidence) as well as between topical ruxolitinib and placebo (RR 5.00, 95% CI 0.25 to 100.89; 78 participants; 1 study; low-certainty evidence). However, baricitinib results in an increase in short-term hair regrowth ≥ 75% when compared to placebo (RR 7.54, 95% CI 3.90 to 14.58; 1200 participants; 2 studies; high-certainty evidence). For the incidence of serious adverse events, the evidence is very uncertain about the effect of topical ruxolitinib versus placebo (RR 0.33, 95% CI 0.01 to 7.94; 78 participants; 1 study; very low-certainty evidence). Baricitinib and apremilast may result in little to no difference in the incidence of serious adverse events versus placebo (RR 1.47, 95% CI 0.60 to 3.60; 1224 participants; 3 studies; low-certainty evidence). The same result is observed for subcutaneous dupilumab compared to placebo (RR 1.54, 95% CI 0.07 to 36.11; 60 participants; 1 study; low-certainty evidence). For health-related quality of life, the evidence is very uncertain about the effect of oral cyclosporine compared to placebo (MD 0.01, 95% CI -0.04 to 0.07; very low-certainty evidence). Baricitinib results in an increase in long-term hair regrowth ≥ 75% compared to placebo (RR 8.49, 95% CI 4.70 to 15.34; 1200 participants; 2 studies; high-certainty evidence). Regarding the risk of bias, the most relevant issues were the lack of details about randomisation and allocation concealment, the limited efforts to keep patients and assessors unaware of the assigned intervention, and losses to follow-up. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS: We found that treatment with baricitinib results in an increase in short- and long-term hair regrowth compared to placebo. Although we found inconclusive results for the risk of serious adverse effects with baricitinib, the reported small incidence of serious adverse events in the baricitinib arm should be balanced with the expected benefits. We also found that the impact of other treatments on hair regrowth is very uncertain. Evidence for health-related quality of life is still scant.

Managing and reducing combined sewer overflow (CSO) discharges is crucial for enhancing the resilience of combined sewer systems (CSS). However, the absence of a standardised resilience analysis approach poses challenges in developing effective discharge reduction strategies. To address this, our study presents a top-down method that expands the existing Global Resilience Analysis to quantify resilience performance in CSS. This approach establishes a link between threats (e.g., rainfall) and impacts (e.g., CSOs) through continuous and long-term simulation, accommodating various rainfall patterns, including extreme events. We assess CSO discharge impacts from a resilience perspective by introducing eight new metrics. We conducted a case study in Fehraltorf, Switzerland, analysing the performance of three green infrastructure (GI) types (bioretention cells, green roofs, and permeable pavements) over 38 years. The results demonstrated that GI enhanced all resilience indices, with variations observed in individual CSO performance metrics and their system locations. Notably, in Fehraltorf, green roofs emerged as the most effective GI type for improving resilience, while the downstream outfall displayed the highest resilience enhancement. Overall, our proposed method enables a shift from event-based to continuous simulation analysis, providing a standardised approach for resilience assessment. This approach informs the development of strategies for CSO discharge reduction and the enhancement of CSS resilience.

The parasite Trichomonas vaginalis is the aetiologic agent of trichomoniasis, the most common non-viral sexually transmitted disease worldwide. This infection often remains asymptomatic and is related to several health complications. The traditional treatment for trichomoniasis uses drugs of the 5-nitroimidazole family, such as metronidazole; however, scientific reports indicate an increasing number of drug-resistant strains. Antimicrobial peptides could be an alternative or complementary treatment. In this sense, one attractive candidate is the human cathelicidin, being LL-37 its active form. LL-37 possesses microbicidal activity against many microorganisms such as bacteria, Candida albicans, and Entamoeba histolytica. Shorter sequences derived from this peptide, such as KR-20, FK-13 and KR-12, have been shown to possess a higher microbicidal effect than LL-37. In this study, we determined the activity of LL-37 and its derivatives against T. vaginalis, which was unknown. The results showed that the four peptides (LL-37, KR-20, FK-13-NH2 and KR-12) decreased the viability of T. vaginalis on a 5-nitroimidazole-sensitive and a 5-nitroimidazole-resistant strain; however, KR-20 was the most effective peptide, followed by FK-13-NH2. Low concentrations of all peptides showed a better effect when combined with metronidazole in the sensitive and resistant T. vaginalis strains. These results are promising for potential future therapeutic uses.

Trichomoniasis-caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis-is associated with a high inflammatory process that may contribute to the risk of suffering from other medical complications. Our study focused on the in vitro interaction of T. vaginalis with human neutrophils because these are the most abundant cells implicated in the characteristic inflammatory process of trichomoniasis. This study showed that T. vaginalis and its surface glycoconjugates (lipophosphoglycan and/or lipoglycan) induced the formation of human neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). After the trichomonad-neutrophil interaction, parasite integrity was at 32.9%, and the subsequent parasite growth was at 35.2% compared to those of control trophozoites (100%) incubated under the same conditions without neutrophils. In the presence of an antibody against the TLR-4 receptor, DNase I or micrococcal nuclease (MNase), neutrophils reduced the DNA fibres of the NETs and the amount of extracellular DNA, allowing a higher subsequent growth of T. vaginalis, at 52% with the anti-TLR-4 antibody and 62.6% with the enzymes. These results indicated that T. vaginalis induced the formation of extracellular traps by human neutrophils and, because of the interaction with neutrophils and NETs, parasite integrity and growth decreased.

RESUMEN

Since the 1980s, research into entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) in Latin America has produced many remarkable discoveries. In fact, 16 out of the 117 recognized species of EPNs have been recovered and described in the subcontinent, with many more endemic species and/or strains remaining to be discovered and identified. In addition, from an applied perspective, numerous technological innovations have been accomplished in relation to their implementation in biocontrol. EPNs have been evaluated against over 170 species of agricultural and urban insects, mites, and plant-parasitic nematodes under laboratory and field conditions. While much success has been recorded, many accomplishments remain obscure, due to their publication in non-English journals, thesis dissertations, conference proceedings, and other non-readily available sources. The present review provides a brief history of EPNs in Latin America, including current findings and future perspectives.

OBJECTIVE: Counselor and client language have been identified as mechanisms of change in motivational interviewing (MI) counseling sessions. This study evaluated whether language patterns exhibited during MI sessions with substance users in the community would also be found during MI sessions with substance users in the criminal justice system. METHOD: Forty audio recordings of MI sessions with substance-using probationers were coded and analyzed sequentially using the Motivational Interviewing Skills Code (MISC) 2.5. Analyses examined the relationship between counselor and client language, and the relationship between client language and client substance use after 2 months. RESULTS: Counselor MI inconsistent language was associated with decreased change talk (lnOR = - 0.76, p < .05) though not with increased sustain talk. Both sustain talk (b = - 4.591, t = - 18.634 p < .001) and MI inconsistent language MIIN (b = - 4.419, t = - 19.886, p < .001) were positively associated with substance use at 2 months. Sustain talk early in the session (i.e., during deciles 1 and 2) was significantly greater among clients who reported using substances at 2 months, compared to clients who did not use substances. CONCLUSION: These findings are broadly consistent with previous literature documenting the association between counselor language, client language, and client outcome.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) to reduce low back pain and improve functioning during the third trimester in pregnancy and to improve selected outcomes of labor and delivery. STUDY DESIGN: Pregnancy research on osteopathic manipulation optimizing treatment effects was a randomized, placebo-controlled trial of 400 women in their third trimester. Women were assigned randomly to usual care only (UCO), usual care plus OMT (OMT), or usual care plus placebo ultrasound treatment (PUT). The study included 7 treatments over 9 weeks. The OMT protocol included specific techniques that were administered by board-certified OMT specialists. Outcomes were assessed with the use of self-report measures for pain and back-related functioning and medical records for delivery outcomes. RESULTS: There were 136 women in the OMT group: 131 women in the PUT group and 133 women in the UCO group. Characteristics at baseline were similar across groups. Findings indicate significant treatment effects for pain and back-related functioning (P < .001 for both groups), with outcomes for the OMT group similar to that of the PUT group; however, both groups were significantly improved compared with the UCO group. For secondary outcome of meconium-stained amniotic fluid, there were no differences among the groups. CONCLUSION: OMT was effective for mitigating pain and functional deterioration compared with UCO; however, OMT did not differ significantly from PUT. This may be attributed to PUT being a more active treatment than intended. There was no higher likelihood of conversion to high-risk status based on treatment group. Therefore, OMT is a safe, effective adjunctive modality to improve pain and functioning during the third trimester.

Green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) is growing in popularity to reduce combined sewer overflows (CSOs) and hydrologic simulation models are a tool to assess their reduction potential. Given the numerous and interacting water flows that contribute to CSOs, such as evapotranspiration (ET) and groundwater (GW), these models should ideally account for them. However, due to the complexity, simplified models are often used, and it is currently unknown how these assumptions affect estimates of CSOs, GSI effectiveness, and ultimately planning guidance. This study evaluates the effect on estimates of CSOs and GSI effectiveness when different flows and hydrologic processes are neglected. We modified an existing EPA SWMM model of a combined sewer system in Switzerland to include ET, GW, and upstream inflows. Historical rainfall data over 30 years are used to assess volume and duration of CSOs with and without three types of GSI (bioretention basins, permeable pavements and green roofs). Results demonstrate that neglect of certain flows in modelling can alter CSO volumes from -15 % to 40 %. GSI effectiveness also varies considerably, resulting in differences in simulated percent of CSO volume reduced from 8 % to 35 %, depending on the GSI type and modeled flow or process. Representation of GW within models is particularly crucial when infiltrating GSI are present, as CSOs could increase in certain subcatchments due to higher GW levels from increased infiltration. Pregnancy-related deaths affect African American women at a rate four to five times higher than White women. These deaths occur during pregnancy or up to 1 year after childbirth. Inadequate or delayed prenatal care is a factor associated with poor maternal health outcomes in African American women. Identifying factors that pose as facilitators and barriers to prenatal care is essential in developing interventions aimed at improving maternal health outcomes.

Background: Antimicrobial resistance represents a serious public health problem that has caused an increase in the morbidity and mortality of infections, a greater use of antibiotics and excessive hospitalization costs. Objective: To describe the frequency of Escherichia coli and its pattern of bacterial susceptibility in cultures of blood, urine and other body fluids in a tertiary care hospital. Material and methods: A quantitative and retrospective test was designed to evaluate the sensitivity pattern of the data obtained in the Microbiology Department. Descriptive statistics were obtained from the sensitivity patterns of the microorganism studied in the period of time analyzed. Results: The sensitivity pattern of different samples evaluated in the unit (n = 694) was recovered. In the strains analyzed, it was found that about 50% have a positive phenotype for extended-spectrum beta-lactamases and that the sensitivity pattern shows that penicillins, cephalosporins and fluoroquinolones are not adequate antimicrobials to treat infections derived from this microorganism. Conclusions: The antimicrobial pattern obtained demonstrates the imperative need for rational and well-founded use of antibiotic therapy, highlighted by the great difference with reports in other scientific articles. Investment in mechanisms to confirm these patterns is necessary, which is why no expense should be spared for the identification, typification and classification of disease-causing microorganisms.


Introducción: la resistencia antimicrobiana representa un grave problema de salud pública que ha provocado un aumento en la morbimortalidad de las infecciones, un mayor uso de antibióticos y el exceso en gastos de hospitalización. Objetivo: describir la frecuencia de Escherichia coli y su patrón de susceptibilidad bacteriana en cultivos de sangre, orina y de otros fluidos corporales en un hospital de tercer nivel. Material y métodos: se diseñó un ensayo cuantitativo y retrospectivo para evaluar el patrón de sensibilidad de los datos obtenidos en el departamento de microbiología. Mediante estadística descriptiva se obtuvieron los patrones de sensibilidad del microorganismo estudiado en el periodo de tiempo analizado. Resultados: se recuperó el patrón de sensibilidad de diferentes muestras evaluadas en la unidad (n = 694). En las cepas analizadas, se encontró que cerca del 50% poseen un fenotipo positivo para betalactamasas de expectro extendido y que el patrón de sensibilidad demuestra que penicilinas, cefalosporinas y fluoroquinolonas no son antimicrobianos adecuados para tratar infecciones por este microorganismo. Conclusiones: el patrón antimicrobiano obtenido demuestra la imperiosa necesidad del uso racional y fundamentado de la terapia antibiótica puesto de manifiesto por la gran diferencia con los reportes en otros artículos científicos. Es necesaria la inversión en mecanismos para la confirmación de estos patrones, por lo que no debe escatimarse en gastos para la identificación, tipificación y clasificación de microorganismos causantes de enfermedades.

Antimicrobial peptides are widely distributed in nature; they play important roles in several aspects of innate immunity and may provide a basis for the design of novel therapeutic agents. In this study, C-amidated tritrpticin, a 13 amino acid tryptophan-rich antimicrobial peptide derived from a porcine cathelicidin, was tested against Trichomonas vaginalis, a protozoan that causes a serious non-viral sexually transmitted disease associated with preterm birth, low birth weight, and high risk of HIV-1 infection. Tritrpticin was selected due to its reasonably easy synthesis and because analogs with lower toxicity may be designed. Our results show that tritrpticin-NH(2) at either 100 or 200 µg/ml (52.5 or 105 µM) clearly reduces the viability and growth of Trichomonas vaginalis. Together with tritrpticin-NH(2), sodium bicarbonate further limited trichomonad growth. Additionally, a low concentration of metronidazole (5.8 µM), the most commonly used medication for Trichomonas vaginalis, was more effective against the growth of the parasite when it was combined with tritrpticin-NH(2).

We present a 76-year-old man with chronic back pain refractory to treatment secondary to spinal trauma from a motor vehicle accident 34 years ago. After trauma, multiple interventions were performed due to spinal instability. The patient was diagnosed with the postlaminectomy syndrome. Multimodal analgesia management failed to control our patient's pain, severely affecting our patient and his family's quality of life. For these reasons, a spinal cord stimulator was implanted despite our patient age. After four months, our patient presented with significant improvement in his life quality.

Plant defensins are small cysteine-rich peptides that inhibit the growth of a broad range of microbes. In this article, we describe NmDef02, a novel cDNA encoding a putative defensin isolated from Nicotiana megalosiphon upon inoculation with the tobacco blue mould pathogen Peronospora hyoscyami f.sp. tabacina. NmDef02 was heterologously expressed in the yeast Pichia pastoris, and the purified recombinant protein was found to display antimicrobial activity in vitro against important plant pathogens. Constitutive expression of NmDef02 gene in transgenic tobacco and potato plants enhanced resistance against various plant microbial pathogens, including the oomycete Phytophthora infestans, causal agent of the economically important potato late blight disease, under greenhouse and field conditions.

Many real-world systems can be studied in terms of pattern recognition tasks, so that proper use (and understanding) of machine learning methods in practical applications becomes essential. While many classification methods have been proposed, there is no consensus on which methods are more suitable for a given dataset. As a consequence, it is important to comprehensively compare methods in many possible scenarios. In this context, we performed a systematic comparison of 9 well-known clustering methods available in the R language assuming normally distributed data. In order to account for the many possible variations of data, we considered artificial datasets with several tunable properties (number of classes, separation between classes, etc). In addition, we also evaluated the sensitivity of the clustering methods with regard to their parameters configuration. The results revealed that, when considering the default configurations of the adopted methods, the spectral approach tended to present particularly good performance. We also found that the default configuration of the adopted implementations was not always accurate. In these cases, a simple approach based on random selection of parameters values proved to be a good alternative to improve the performance. All in all, the reported approach provides subsidies guiding the choice of clustering algorithms.

Fomentar espacios de superación, para los profesores de Cultura Física que laboran en talleres especiales, constituye una condición primordial para apropiarse de conocimientos teórico-prácticos dirigidos a brindar un servicio de calidad, en la atención a los trabajadores con discapacidad. El objetivo del artículo consistió en diagnosticar la superación de los profesores de Cultura Física que dirigen la gimnasia profesional aplicada en trabajadores con discapacidad que asisten a los talleres especiales, en La Habana. Se realizó un estudio descriptivo de corte transversal no experimental que favoreció la identificación de la problemática pedagógica y científica del proceso de estudio, a partir de la aplicación de métodos empíricos como la revisión de documentos, la encuesta, la entrevista y la observación; esto permitió determinar las causas del fenómeno, para su caracterización y pronóstico. La investigación hizo evidente las principales dificultades en la atención a estos trabajadores y la necesidad de una superación especializada para la ampliación y perfeccionamiento de los conocimientos y habilidades de este profesional.


Promover espaços de aperfeiçoamento, para professores de Cultura Física que atuam em oficinas especiais, constitui condição primordial para a apropriação de conhecimentos teórico-práticos voltados à prestação de serviço de qualidade no atendimento ao trabalhador com deficiência. O objetivo do artigo foi diagnosticar o aperfeiçoamento dos professores de Cultura Física que dirigem a ginástica profissional aplicada aos trabalhadores com deficiência que frequentam oficinas especiais em Havana. Foi realizado um estudo descritivo transversal não experimental que favoreceu a identificação dos problemas pedagógicos e científicos do processo de estudo, baseado na aplicação de métodos empíricos como revisão documental, levantamento, entrevista e observação; Isto permitiu determinar as causas do fenômeno, para sua caracterização e prognóstico. A pesquisa evidenciou as principais dificuldades no atendimento a esses trabalhadores e a necessidade de formação especializada para ampliar e aprimorar os conhecimentos e habilidades desse profissional.


Promoting spaces for improvement, for Physical Culture teachers who work in special workshops, constitutes a primary condition for appropriating theoretical-practical knowledge aimed at providing quality service in caring for workers with disabilities. The objective of the article was to diagnose the improvement of Physical Culture teachers who direct professional gymnastics applied to workers with disabilities who attend special workshops in Havana. A non-experimental cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out that favored the identification of the pedagogical and scientific problems of the study process, based on the application of empirical methods such as document review, survey, interview and observation; this allowed to determine the causes of the phenomenon, for its characterization and prognosis. The research made evident the main difficulties in caring for these workers and the need for specialized improvement to expand and improve the knowledge and skills of this professional.

BACKGROUND: Variants of the APOL1 gene increase risk for kidney failure 10-fold, and are nearly exclusively found in people with African ancestry. To translate genomic discoveries into practice, we gathered information about effects and challenges incorporating genetic risk in clinical care. METHODS: An academic-community-clinical team tested 26 adults with self-reported African ancestry for APOL1 variants, conducting in-depth interviews about patients' beliefs and attitudes toward genetic testing- before, immediately, and 30 days after receiving test results. We used constant comparative analysis of interview transcripts to identify themes. RESULTS: Themes included: Knowledge of genetic risk for kidney failure may motivate providers and patients to take hypertension more seriously, rather than inspiring fatalism or anxiety. Having genetic risk for a disease may counter stereotypes of Blacks as non-adherent or low-literate, rather than exacerbate stereotypes. CONCLUSION: Populations most likely to benefit from genomic research can inform strategies for genetic testing and future research.
