INTRODUCTION: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of components including abdominal obesity, hyperglycemia, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. MetS is highly prevalent in individuals with bipolar disorders (BD) with an estimated global rate of 32.6%. Longitudinal data on incident MetS in BD are scarce and based on small sample size. The objectives of this study were to estimate the incidence of MetS in a large longitudinal cohort of 1521 individuals with BD and to identify clinical and biological predictors of incident MetS. METHODS: Participants were recruited from the FondaMental Advanced Center of Expertise for Bipolar Disorder (FACE-BD) cohort and followed-up for 3 years. MetS was defined according to the International Diabetes Federation criteria. Individuals without MetS at baseline but with MetS during follow-up were considered as having incident MetS. A logistic regression model was performed to estimate the adjusted odds ratio and its corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) for an association between each factor and incident MetS during follow-up. We applied inverse probability-of-censoring weighting method to minimize selection bias due to loss during follow-up. RESULTS: Among individuals without MetS at baseline (n = 1521), 19.3% developed MetS during follow-up. Multivariable analyses showed that incident MetS during follow-up was significantly associated with male sex (OR = 2.2, 95% CI = 1.7-3.0, p < 0.0001), older age (OR = 2.14, 95% CI = 1.40-3.25, p = 0.0004), presence of a mood recurrence during follow-up (OR = 1.91, 95% CI = 1.22-3.00, p = 0.0049), prolonged exposure to second-generation antipsychotics (OR = 1.56, 95% CI = 0.99, 2.45, p = 0.0534), smoking status at baseline (OR = 1.30, 95% CI = 1.00-1.68), lifetime alcohol use disorders (OR = 1.33, 95% CI = 0.98-1.79), and baseline sleep disturbances (OR = 1.04, 95% CI = 1.00-1.08), independently of the associations observed for baseline MetS components. CONCLUSION: We observed a high incidence of MetS during a 3 years follow-up (19.3%) in individuals with BD. Identification of predictive factors should help the development of early interventions to prevent or treat early MetS.

Defining homogeneous subgroups of bipolar disorder (BD) is a major goal in personalized psychiatry and research. According to the neurodevelopmental theory, age at onset may be a key variable. As potential trait markers of neurodevelopment, cognitive and functional impairment should be greater in the early form of the disease, particularly type 1 BD (BD I). The age at onset was assessed in a multicenter, observational sample of 4190 outpatients with BD. We used a battery of neuropsychological tests to assess six domains of cognition. Functioning was measured using the Functioning Assessment Short Test (FAST). We studied the potential moderation of the type of BD on the associations between the age at onset and cognitive and functioning in a subsample of 2072 euthymic participants, controlling for potential clinical and socio-demographic covariates. Multivariable analyses showed cognition to not be impaired in individuals with early (21-30 years) and very early-life (before 14 years) onset of BD. Functioning was equivalent between individuals with early and midlife-onset of BD II and NOS but better for individuals with early onset of BD I. In contrast, functioning was not worse in individuals with very early-onset BD I but worse in those with very early-onset BD II and NOS. Early-life onset BDs were not characterized by poorer cognition and functioning. Our results do not support the neurodevelopmental view that a worse cognitive prognosis characterizes early-life onset BD. This study suggests that functional remediation may be prioritized for individuals with midlife-onset BD I and very early life onset BD 2 and NOS.

BACKGROUND: In France, people who inject drugs (PWID) are still one of the most at risk population for contracting hepatitis C virus (HCV). Drug consumption rooms (DCR) have shown their effectiveness on HCV risk behaviors abroad and in France, where they have been recently evaluated with the COSINUS study. In France, two DCRs opened in 2016, one in Paris and another in Strasbourg. The objective of this sub-analysis was to explore the willingness to use a DCR in PWID living in Marseille, where no DCR is opened. METHODS: The COSINUS study is a prospective multicenter cohort that included 665 PWID recruited in Bordeaux, Marseille, Paris and Strasbourg between 2016 and 2019. Investigators administered questionnaires face-to-face at regular intervals at baseline, 3 months, 6 months and 12 months. In Marseille, 199 PWID were recruited. A multivariable logistic regression model was performed to assess factors associated with willingness to use DCR among this population. RESULTS: Among 545 observations corresponding to 195 distinct participants selected for analyses, 57% declared they were willing to attend a DCR. The main reason given was "to consume more cleanly". Receiving allowances (OR = 2.38; 95% confidence interval (CI) (95% CI) = 1.17-4.81), not having health insurance (OR = 3.61; 95% CI = 1.49-8.75), injecting daily (OR = 1.97; 95% CI = 1.05-3.70) and in a public space (OR = 2.66; 95% CI = 1.29-5.47) were all positively associated with willingness to use a DCR. CONCLUSIONS: DCR are devices that target PWID exposed to high sanitary or social risks, i.e. people living in precarious conditions, who have to inject in public spaces, in deleterious sanitary environments and with rapid gestures in order not to be seen. These analyzes highlight that the people who most want to attend a DCR are aware of the harms associated with their practices and show a desire to seek protection from street-based drug scenes.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Omalizumab is a human anti-IgE antibody approved for the treatment of severe allergic asthma (SAA). However, its effectiveness in SAA associated with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis (CRSNP+) is less well documented. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the real-life effectiveness of omalizumab in patients with SAA and CRSNP+ who tolerated and did not tolerate aspirin. METHODS: We performed a retrospective, observational, multicenter, real-life study of patients with SAA and CRSNP+ treated with omalizumab for 6 months. Asthma outcome parameters (symptoms, number of salbutamol rescues/wk, number of moderate/severe exacerbations, Asthma Control Test score, and lung function), sinonasal outcome parameters (symptoms, number of episodes of acute rhinosinusitis, sinus computed tomography images, nasal polyps endoscopy score), and serum eosinophil levels were analyzed 6 months before and after treatment with omalizumab. RESULTS: Twenty-four adult patients were included (9 with documented aspirin intolerance). All respiratory parameters were significantly improved by the treatment. In parallel, a significant improvement was observed in sinonasal clinical outcomes and sinus computed tomography images, with no major effect on the nasal polyps endoscopy score. The serum eosinophil count decreased significantly after 6 months of treatment with omalizumab. CONCLUSION: Treatment of SAA with omalizumab improves the outcome of associated CRSNP+, thus supporting the concept of a "one airway disease".

OBJECTIVES: Clinical heterogeneity during euthymic states is a crucial issue in bipolar disorders. Indeed, actual data are not sufficient to understand why some patients are unharmed by subthreshold symptoms and have functional impairments whereas others have a functional remission but have subthreshold symptoms. Based on the Ball model, cognitive and schematic vulnerability interact with genetic vulnerability and trigger affective symptoms with the intervention of stressful life events. Furthermore, according to this model, adjustment and adaptation to illness assessed by functional outcome and illness experience are associated with this cognitive and schematic vulnerability. So, theoretical arguments support that childhood adversity and temperamental deregulation characterize patients with bipolar disorders. Thus, the aim of this study is to systematically review studies of Early Maladaptive Schemas in bipolar disorder, to determine whether Early Maladaptive Schemas have specificity in bipolar disorder in comparison with other populations, and to identify which Early Maladaptive Schemas could be activated. The challenge of this review is to identify if the taking of early maladaptive schemas into account could allow us to better identify, understand and manage bipolar disorders. METHODS: This systematic review was led according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic review and Meta-Analysis statement on the electronic databases Cochrane, PsycArticles, Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection, PsycInfo, PubMed, ScienceDirect and Scopus with « early maladaptive schemas ¼ AND « bipolar disorder ¼ as keywords. Only studies meeting eligibility criteria concerning publication status, language, population and outcomes were included after several screenings on basis of title, abstract and full-text. Then, we carried out data extraction in accordance with criteria defined in principle (about characteristics of participants, objectives, materiel and methods, principle results and bias). RESULTS: Among 39 records identified, a total of 10 studies met eligibility criteria for inclusion in this review. Synthesizing findings across the studies revealed three important topics. First, early maladaptive schemas appear as potential cognitive characteristics that clinicians have to investigate in clinical practice. Indeed, patients with bipolar disorders present greater activation of the early maladaptive schemas in comparison with people who have no disorder. This point supports the first part of Ball's theoretical model that considers schemas as a vulnerability to bipolarity. Secondly, early maladaptive schemas are relevant to distinguish bipolar disorders from unipolar depression and borderline personality disorder. A greater and a lower activation are respectively identified among bipolar disorders. Thirdly, supporting the second part of Ball's model, early maladaptive schemas play a key role in recovery regarding their impact on the course of bipolarity, in particular on suicidality and functional impairment. Finally, these dysfunctional schemas allow us to understand the clinical heterogeneity of bipolar disorder, and among others, about the type of bipolarity. These results have several implications, but there are some limits in this systematic review. First, no French study has been done. Then, reduced sample sizes in these studies increased the risk to conclude wrongly to an activation difference between groups. Furthermore, probably due to the variety of methods and populations, we could not identify an homogeneous pattern of early activated maladaptive schemas. Overall, scientific approaches used in these studies are based on statistical models using mean and standard deviation. These types of statistical analyses are the main limit because they cannot represent the heterogeneity of early maladaptive schemas profiles. CONCLUSIONS: Schema theory proves to be a relevant approach in bipolar disorders, and early maladaptive schemas appear to be important to take into account in clinical practice. Nevertheless, in order to propose schemas therapy appropriately, it is necessary to specify if early maladaptive schemas are activated and to specify therapeutic indications because of clinical heterogeneity. Moreover, data do not yet allow us to understand the disparity of profiles during the inter-episode period. Indeed, a French research perspective is being considered that will prefer a person-oriented approach.

Tobacco smoking is common in schizophrenia and is one of the main causes of premature mortality in this disorder. Little is known about clinical correlates and treatments associated with tobacco smoking in patients with schizophrenia. Still, a better characterization of these patients is necessary, in a personalized care approach. Aggressiveness and childhood trauma have been associated with tobacco smoking in general population, but this association has never been explored in schizophrenia. Our study examines the clinical and therapeutic characteristics of tobacco smoking in schizophrenia. 474 stabilized patients (mean age = 32.2; 75.7% male gender; smokers n = 207, 54.6%) were consecutively included in the network of the FondaMental Expert centers for Schizophrenia and assessed with valid scales. Current tobacco status was self-declared. Aggressiveness was self-reported with Buss-Perry Aggressiveness Questionnaire and Childhood Trauma with Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. Ongoing treatment was reported. In univariate analysis, tobacco smoking was associated with lower education level (p < 0.01), positive syndrome (p < 0.01), higher physical aggressiveness (p < 0.001), alcohol dependence (p < 0.001), and First Generation Antipsychotics (FGAs) use (p = 0.018). In a multivariate model, tobacco smoking remained associated with physical aggressiveness (p < 0.05), current alcohol dependence (p < 0.01) and FGA use (p < 0.05). No association was observed with childhood trauma history, mood disorder, suicidal behavior, psychotic symptom, global functioning or medication adherence. Patients with tobacco use present clinical and therapeutic specificities, questioning the neurobiological links between tobacco and schizophrenia. They could represent a specific phenotype, with specific clinical and therapeutic specificities that may involve interactions between cholinergic-nicotinic system and dopaminergic system. Further longitudinal studies are needed to confirm the potential efficacy of second generation antipsychotics (SGAs) on tobacco use in schizophrenia and to develop effective strategies for tobacco cessation in this population.

BACKGROUND: Because the cost of cereals is unstable and represents a large part of production charges for meat-type chicken, there is an urge to formulate alternative diets from more cost-effective feedstuff. We have recently shown that meat-type chicken source is prone to adapt to dietary starch substitution with fat and fiber. The aim of this study was to better understand the molecular mechanisms of this adaptation to changes in dietary energy sources through the fine characterization of transcriptomic changes occurring in three major metabolic tissues - liver, adipose tissue and muscle - as well as in circulating blood cells. RESULTS: We revealed the fine-tuned regulation of many hepatic genes encoding key enzymes driving glycogenesis and de novo fatty acid synthesis pathways and of some genes participating in oxidation. Among the genes expressed upon consumption of a high-fat, high-fiber diet, we highlighted CPT1A, which encodes a key enzyme in the regulation of fatty acid oxidation. Conversely, the repression of lipogenic genes by the high-fat diet was clearly associated with the down-regulation of SREBF1 transcripts but was not associated with the transcript regulation of MLXIPL and NR1H3, which are both transcription factors. This result suggests a pivotal role for SREBF1 in lipogenesis regulation in response to a decrease in dietary starch and an increase in dietary PUFA. Other prospective regulators of de novo hepatic lipogenesis were suggested, such as PPARD, JUN, TADA2A and KAT2B, the last two genes belonging to the lysine acetyl transferase (KAT) complex family regulating histone and non-histone protein acetylation. Hepatic glycogenic genes were also down-regulated in chickens fed a high-fat, high-fiber diet compared to those in chickens fed a starch-based diet. No significant dietary-associated variations in gene expression profiles was observed in the other studied tissues, suggesting that the liver mainly contributed to the adaptation of birds to changes in energy source and nutrients in their diets, at least at the transcriptional level. Moreover, we showed that PUFA deposition observed in the different tissues may not rely on transcriptional changes. CONCLUSION: We showed the major role of the liver, at the gene expression level, in the adaptive response of chicken to dietary starch substitution with fat and fiber.

Liver steatosis is common in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-hepatitis C virus (HCV)-co-infected patients. Some recent studies have found that cannabis use is negatively associated with insulin resistance in the general population and in HIV-HCV-co-infected patients. Given the causal link between insulin resistance and steatosis, we hypothesized that cannabis use has a positive impact on steatosis. Therefore, we aimed to study whether cannabis use in this population was associated with a reduced risk of steatosis, measured by ultrasound examination. ANRS CO13-HEPAVIH is a French nationwide multicentre cohort of HIV-HCV-co-infected patients. Medical and socio-behavioural data from clinical follow-up visits and annual self-administered questionnaires were prospectively collected. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using data from the first visit where both ultrasound examination data for steatosis (positive or negative diagnosis) and data on cannabis use were available. A logistic regression model was used to evaluate the association between cannabis use and steatosis. Among study sample patients (n = 838), 40.1% had steatosis. Fourteen per cent reported daily cannabis use, 11.7% regular use and 74.7% no use or occasional use ("never or sometimes"). Daily cannabis use was independently associated with a reduced prevalence of steatosis (adjusted odds ratio [95% CI] = 0.64 [0.42;0.99]; P = .046), after adjusting for body mass index, hazardous alcohol consumption and current or lifetime use of lamivudine/zidovudine. Daily cannabis use may be a protective factor against steatosis in HIV-HCV-co-infected patients. These findings confirm the need for a clinical evaluation of cannabis-based pharmacotherapies in this population. Eudract.ema.europa.eu number, DGS050367.

OBJECTIVE: Remitted bipolar disorder (BD) patients frequently present with chronic mood instability and emotional hyper-reactivity, associated with poor psychosocial functioning and low-grade inflammation. We investigated emotional hyper-reactivity as a dimension for characterization of remitted BD patients, and clinical and biological factors for identifying those with and without emotional hyper-reactivity. METHOD: A total of 635 adult remitted BD patients, evaluated in the French Network of Bipolar Expert Centers from 2010-2015, were assessed for emotional reactivity using the Multidimensional Assessment of Thymic States. Machine learning algorithms were used on clinical and biological variables to enhance characterization of patients. RESULTS: After adjustment, patients with emotional hyper-reactivity (n = 306) had significantly higher levels of systolic and diastolic blood pressure (P < 1.0 × 10-8 ), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (P < 1.0 × 10-8 ), fasting glucose (P < 2.23 × 10-6 ), glycated hemoglobin (P = 0.0008) and suicide attempts (P = 1.4 × 10-8 ). Using models of combined clinical and biological factors for distinguishing BD patients with and without emotional hyper-reactivity, the strongest predictors were: systolic and diastolic blood pressure, fasting glucose, C-reactive protein and number of suicide attempts. This predictive model identified patients with emotional hyper-reactivity with 84.9% accuracy. CONCLUSION: The assessment of emotional hyper-reactivity in remitted BD patients is clinically relevant, particularly for identifying those at higher risk of cardiometabolic dysfunction, chronic inflammation, and suicide.

OBJECTIVE: The effect of benzodiazepine long-term administration (BLTA) in cognitive functioning of subjects with schizophrenia (SZ) has been partially explored to date. The objective was to assess BLTA-associated cognitive impairment with a comprehensive cognitive battery in a non-selected multicentric/national community-dwelling sample of stabilized SZ subjects. METHOD: 407 community-dwelling stabilized SZ subjects were consecutively included in the FondaMental Academic Centers of Expertise for Schizophrenia Cohort (FACE-SZ). Patients taking daily benzodiazepine were defined as BLTA+ as all patients examined by the Expert Center were clinically stabilized and under stable dose of treatment for at least 3 months. Each patient has been administered a 1-day long comprehensive cognitive battery (including The National Adult Reading Test, the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, the Trail Making Test, the California Verbal Learning Test, the Doors test, and The Continuous Performance Test-Identical Pairs). RESULTS: In the multivariate analyses, results showed that BLTA was associated with impaired attention/working memory (OR 0.60, 95% confidence interval 0.42-0.86; p = 0.005) independently of socio-demographic variables and illness characteristics. Verbal and performance current IQ-[respectively, OR 0.98, 95% CI (0.96;0.99), p = 0.016 and 0.98, 95% CI(0.97;0.99), p = 0.034] but not premorbid IQ-(p > 0.05) have been associated with BLTA in a multivariate model including the same confounding variables. CONCLUSION: BLTA is associated with impaired attention/working memory in schizophrenia. The BLTA benefit/risk ratio should be regularly reevaluated. Alternative pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies for comorbid anxiety disorders and sleep disorders should be preferred when possible. It seems reasonable to withdraw BLTA before the start of cognitive remediation therapy, as soon as possible, to improve the effectiveness of this therapy. Limits: the delay between the last benzodiazepine intake and testing, as well as the specific class of benzodiazepines (long half-life vs. short half-life), and the number of benzodiazepine daily intakes have not been recorded in the present study. The precise motive for BLTA prescription and sleep disturbances have not been reported, which is a limit for the interpretation of the present results.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this nested study was to assess the prevalence of psychiatric disorders in a sample of HIV/hepatitis C virus (HCV)-coinfected patients according to their HCV status. METHODS: The nested cross-sectional study, untitled HEPAVIH-Psy survey, was performed in a subset of HIV/HCV-coinfected patients enrolled in the French Agence Nationale de Recherche sur le SIDA et les Hépatites Virales (ANRS) CO13 HEPAVIH cohort. Psychiatric disorders were screened for using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI 5.0.0). RESULTS: Among the 286 patients enrolled in the study, 68 (24%) had never received HCV treatment, 87 (30%) were treatment nonresponders, 44 (15%) were currently being treated and 87 (30%) had a sustained virological response (SVR). Of the 286 patients enrolled, 121 patients (42%) screened positive for a psychiatric disorder other than suicidality and alcohol/drug abuse/dependence, 40 (14%) screened positive for alcohol abuse/dependence, 50 (18%) screened positive for drug abuse/dependence, 50 (17.5%) were receiving an antidepressant treatment and 69 (24%) were receiving an anxiolytic. Patients with an SVR did not significantly differ from the other groups in terms of psychiatric disorders. Patients receiving HCV treatment screened positive less often for an anxiety disorder. The highest rate of drug dependence/abuse was among HCV treatment-naïve patients. CONCLUSIONS: Psychiatric disorders were frequent in HIV/HCV-coinfected patients and their rates were comparable between groups, even for patients achieving an SVR. Our results emphasize the need for continuous assessment and care of coinfected patients, even after HCV clearance. Drug addiction remains an obstacle to access to HCV treatment. Despite the recent advent and continued development of directly acting antiviral agents (DAAs), it is still crucial to offer screening and comprehensive care for psychiatric and addictive disorders.

The number of polymorphisms identified with next-generation sequencing approaches depends directly on the sequencing depth and therefore on the experimental cost. Although higher levels of depth ensure more sensitive and more specific SNP calls, economic constraints limit the increase of depth for whole-genome resequencing (WGS). For this reason, capture resequencing is used for studies focusing on only some specific regions of the genome. However, several biases in capture resequencing are known to have a negative impact on the sensitivity of SNP detection. Within this framework, the aim of this study was to compare the accuracy of WGS and capture resequencing on SNP detection and genotype calling, which differ in terms of both sequencing depth and biases. Indeed, we have evaluated the SNP calling and genotyping accuracy in a WGS dataset (13X) and in a capture resequencing dataset (87X) performed on 11 individuals. The percentage of SNPs not identified due to a sevenfold sequencing depth decrease was estimated at 7.8% using a down-sampling procedure on the capture sequencing dataset. A comparison of the 87X capture sequencing dataset with the WGS dataset revealed that capture-related biases were leading with the loss of 5.2% of SNPs detected with WGS. Nevertheless, when considering the SNPs detected by both approaches, capture sequencing appears to achieve far better SNP genotyping, with about 4.4% of the WGS genotypes that can be considered as erroneous and even 10% focusing on heterozygous genotypes. In conclusion, WGS and capture deep sequencing can be considered equivalent strategies for SNP detection, as the rate of SNPs not identified because of a low sequencing depth in the former is quite similar to SNPs missed because of method biases of the latter. On the other hand, capture deep sequencing clearly appears more adapted for studies requiring great accuracy in genotyping.

The aim of this study on shared decision-making in the doctor-patient encounter about surgical treatment for early-stage breast cancer, conducted in a regional cancer centre in France, was to further the understanding of patient perceptions on shared decision-making. The study used methodological triangulation to collect data (both quantitative and qualitative) about patient preferences in the context of a clinical consultation in which surgeons followed a shared decision-making protocol. Data were analysed from a multi-disciplinary research perspective (social psychology and health economics). The triangulated data collection methods were questionnaires (n = 132), longitudinal interviews (n = 47) and observations of consultations (n = 26). Methodological triangulation revealed levels of divergence and complementarity between qualitative and quantitative results that suggest new perspectives on the three inter-related notions of decision-making, participation and information. Patients' responses revealed important differences between shared decision-making and participation per se. The authors note that subjecting patients to a normative behavioural model of shared decision-making in an era when paradigms of medical authority are shifting may undermine the patient's quest for what he or she believes is a more important right: a guarantee of the best care available.

BACKGROUND: Guidelines recommend regular assessment of asthma control. The Childhood Asthma Control Test (C-ACT) is a clinically validated tool. AIM: To evaluate asthma control according to GINA2006, NAEPP, pediatrician's assessment (PA), and C-ACT in asthmatic children visiting their ambulatory pediatrician or tertiary care pediatric pulmonologist. METHODS: Demographic data, treatment, and number of severe exacerbations during the previous year were collected. Control was assessed using (i) strict GINA 2006 criteria, (ii) GINA without taking into account the exacerbation item, (iii) NAEPP criteria, and (iv) PA. Children and parents filled out the C-ACT. RESULTS: Five hundred and twenty-five children completed the survey (mean age: 7.7 years; 28% ≤ 6 years). 78% had a controller treatment. 58% reported ≥ 1 severe exacerbation. C-ACT was ≤ 19 in 29.5%. Control was not achieved in 76.5%, 55%, 40%, and 34% according to GINA 2006 guidelines, NAEPP guidelines, GINA 2006 without exacerbation criteria, and PA, respectively. C-ACT was significantly lower in children ≤ 6 years old (P = 0.002) or with severe exacerbations (P < 0.0001). According to PA, 89% of patients with a C-ACT > 21 were controlled and 85% of patients with a C-ACT < 17 not controlled. CONCLUSION: We observed discrepancies between the different tools applied to assess asthma control in children, and the impact of age and exacerbations. Cutoff point of 19 of C-ACT was not associated with the best performance compared to PA. Assessment of control should take into account symptoms and lung function as suggested by the latest GINA guidelines as well as exacerbation over a long period.

We present an analysis of the Mw = 5.3 earthquake that occurred in the Southeast Indian Ridge on 2010 February 11 using USArray data. The epicentre of this event is antipodal to the USArray, providing us with an opportunity to observe in details the antipodal focusing of seismic waves in space and time. We compare the observed signals with synthetic seismograms computed for a spherically symmetric earth model (PREM). A beamforming analysis is performed over the different seismic phases detected at antipodal distances. Direct spatial snapshots of the signals and the beamforming results show that the focusing is well predicted for the first P-wave phases such as PKP or PP. However, converted phases (SKSP, PPS) show a deviation of the energy focusing to the south, likely caused by the Earth's heterogeneity. Focusing of multiple S-wave phases strongly deteriorates and is barely observable.

NEUROSCI BIOBEHAV REV (1) 2024 Schizophrenia spectrum disorders and major mood disorders are associated with cognitive impairments. Recent studies suggest a link between gut microbiota composition and cognitive functioning. Here, we review the relationship between gut microbiota and cognition in these disorders. To do this, we conducted a systematic review, searching Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, EBSCOhost, Embase, Pubmed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Studies were included if they investigated the relationship between gut microbiota composition and cognitive function through neuropsychological assessments in patients with bipolar, depressive, schizophrenia spectrum, and other psychotic disorders. Ten studies were identified. Findings underscore a link between gut dysbiosis and cognitive impairment. This relationship identified specific taxa (Haemophilus, Bacteroides, and Alistipes) as potential contributors to bolstered cognitive performance. Conversely, Candida albicans, Toxoplasma gondii, Streptococcus and Deinococcus were associated with diminished performance on cognitive assessments. Prebiotics and probiotics interventions were associated with cognitive enhancements, particularly executive functions. These results emphasize the role of gut microbiota in cognition, prompting further exploration of the underlying mechanisms paving the way toward precision psychiatry.

INTRODUCTION: Incisor malocclusion in rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) is a common clinical problem seen in general practice. Given that the growth rate is about 2 mm per week, a lack of wear quickly leads to feeding difficulties and soft tissue injuries. Therefore, pathologically elongated incisors must be shortened every three to six weeks. The goal of this study was to assess the potential adverse effects on dental and periodontal tissues associated with the three most commonly used trimming methods: nail cutter, diamond-coated cutting disc and diamond burr. The left mandibular incisor of 28 healthy New Zealand rabbits was subjected to four trimmings with one of the three cutting methods. After the fattening period, the mandibles were collected and both mandibular incisors were investigated on dental radiographs, micro-computed tomography scans and histological sections. Dental and periodontal tissue changes were evaluated. This study allowed a more accurate statement of the potential short-term adverse effects of the three trimming methods. At the clinical level, the nail cutter caused the formation of an irregular occlusal surface with sharp edges. Both engine-drive methods allowed the attainment of a smooth surface but the disc was less accurate. Histological evaluation revealed that the primary modifications, including coronal fractures, periodontal ligament widening and inflammation, reparative osteodentine, paracementosis and biofilm accumulation, were found in the nail cutter group.


INTRODUCTION: La malocclusion des incisives chez le lapin (Oryctolagus cuniculus) est un problème clinique courant en médecine générale. Étant donné que le taux de croissance est d'environ 2 mm par semaine, un manque d'usure entraîne rapidement des difficultés d'alimentation et des lésions des tissus mous. Par conséquent, les incisives pathologiquement trop longues doivent être raccourcies toutes les trois à six semaines. L'objectif de cette étude était d'évaluer les effets négatifs potentiels sur les tissus dentaires et parodontaux associés aux trois méthodes de taille les plus couramment utilisées: le coupeongles, le disque de coupe diamanté et la fraise diamantée. L'incisive mandibulaire gauche de 28 lapins néo-zélandais en bonne santé a été soumise à quatre tailles avec l'une des trois méthodes de coupe. Après la période d'engraissement, les mandibules ont été prélevées et les deux incisives mandibulaires ont été examinées sur des radiographies dentaires, des examens micro-tomodensitométriques et des coupes histologiques. Les modifications des tissus dentaires et parodontaux ont été évaluées. Cette étude a permis de mieux cerner les effets indésirables potentiels à court terme des trois méthodes de coupe. Au niveau clinique, le coupe-ongles a entraîné la formation d'une surface occlusale irrégulière avec des bords tranchants. Les deux autres méthodes de taille permettent d'obtenir une surface lisse, mais le disque est moins précis. L'évaluation histologique a révélé que les modifications primaires, y compris les fractures coronaires, l'élargissement et l'inflammation du ligament parodontal, l'ostéodentine réparatrice, la paracémentose et l'accumulation de biofilm, ont été trouvées dans le groupe coupe-ongles.

The scaffold protein 14-3-3ζ is an established regulator of adipogenesis and postnatal adiposity. We and others have demonstrated the 14-3-3ζ interactome to be diverse and dynamic, and it can be examined to identify novel regulators of physiological processes, including adipogenesis. In the present study, we sought to determine if factors that influence adipogenesis during the development of obesity could be identified in the 14-3-3ζ interactome found in white adipose tissue of lean or obese TAP-tagged-14-3-3ζ overexpressing mice. Using mass spectrometry, differences in the abundance of novel, as well as established, adipogenic factors within the 14-3-3ζ interactome could be detected in adipose tissues. One novel candidate was revealed to be plakoglobin, the homolog of the known adipogenic inhibitor, ß-catenin, and herein, we report that plakoglobin is involved in adipocyte differentiation. Plakoglobin is expressed in murine 3T3-L1 cells and is primarily localized to the nucleus, where its abundance decreases during adipogenesis. Depletion of plakoglobin by siRNA inhibited adipogenesis and reduced PPARγ2 expression, and similarly, plakoglobin depletion in human adipose-derived stem cells also impaired adipogenesis and reduced lipid accumulation post-differentiation. Transcriptional assays indicated that plakoglobin does not participate in Wnt/ß-catenin signaling, as its depletion did not affect Wnt3a-mediated transcriptional activity. Taken together, our results establish plakoglobin as a novel regulator of adipogenesis in vitro and highlights the ability of using the 14-3-3ζ interactome to identify potential pro-obesogenic factors.

Movement of resources was essential to the survival and success of early complex societies. The sources and destinations of goods and the means of transportation - be it by boats, carts and/or foot - can often be inferred, but the logistics of these movements are inherently more difficult to ascertain. Here, we use strontium isotopic analysis to test hypotheses about the role of animal and animal-powered transport in medium and long-distance movement and exchange, using the Indus Civilization as a case study. Across the wide geographical spread of the Indus Civilisation, there is strong evidence for long-distance exchange of raw materials and finished objects and this process is presumed to involve boats and animal-driven transport, although there is little evidence as to the relative importance of each mode of movement. Strontium isotopic analysis of animal remains from four sites analysed for this study combined with results from nine other sites indicates limited long-distance animal movement between different geological zones within the Indus Civilisation. These findings suggest that individual animals primarily moved short- or medium-distances, though there are several significant exceptions seen in some pigs and cattle found at two large urban sites. We infer that long-distance transport of goods, be it raw materials, finished objects, other goods, or the animals themselves, could have occurred through the use of boats and waterways, by traction animals moving over long distances that did not end up in the archaeological record, and/or by different animals participating in many short to medium-distance movements.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In heroin dependent individuals, the HIV epidemic has been controlled in countries where access to opioid maintenance treatment (OMT) and needle exchange programs (NEP) have been implemented. However, despite similar routes of contamination for both viruses, the prevalence of hepatitis C (HCV) infection remains high in drug users. The objective of this analysis was to identify the prevalence of HCV and the correlates of being HCV-positive in a sample of out-of-treatment heroin-dependent individuals. METHODS: Data were collected from five inpatient studies (n = 120 participants) conducted at the New York State Psychiatric Institute. A logistic regression was used to identify correlates of being HCV-positive at baseline. RESULTS: Among the 120 heroin-dependent volunteers, 42 were HCV-positive. Participants who had heavier alcohol use, a longer duration of heroin use, or who reported using heroin by injection were more likely to be HCV-positive. Interestingly, participants who had injected cocaine during the previous month had a ninefold greater risk of being HCV-positive compared to non-cocaine users and those who used cocaine by a non-injecting route. CONCLUSIONS AND SCIENTIFIC SIGNIFICANCE: These findings confirm the risk of being HCV-infected through intravenous drug use, especially with cocaine use. These results underscore the importance of rethinking interventions to prevent HCV infection with combined strategies using pharmacological approaches for cocaine dependence and tailored prevention for cocaine users.
