RESUMEN

This study was conducted to investigate rickettsial seropositivity among hunters, a high-risk population for tick-borne diseases in northern Cyprus. Serum samples were collected from 300 hunters from different locations during the 2017-2018 hunting season (November 2017 - February 2018). The samples were analyzed by indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) using slides coated with Rickettsia slovaca, a species belonging to the spotted fever group (SFG). During the sample collection, a questionnaire was also applied to evaluate possible risk factors for rickettsial seropositivity. Of the 300 serum samples, six (2.0%) were found to be IgG-positive with a titer of 1:64. While all seropositive individuals were male, the statistical analysis revealed no significant association of gender with rickettsial seropositivity (p=1.000). Other factors including age (p=0.414), residential places of the participants (p=0.347), hunting years (p=0.694) or hunting abroad (p=1.000) did not significantly affect the IgG positivity. Also, no statistical correlation was found between a history of an arthropod (tick, louse, or flea) bite and rickettsial seropositivity (p=1.000). To our knowledge, this is the first study that demonstrates rickettsial seropositivity among human population in northern Cyprus. Our study suggests that awareness should be raised among the people especially involved in outdoor activities such as hunting, and control programs should be implemented to prevent possible rickettsiosis cases. Further serological studies using other Rickettsia spp. antigens, as well as molecular studies that search for Rickettsia spp. in humans, animals and arthropods are needed to obtain more comprehensive data on rickettsiosis in northern Cyprus.

RESUMEN

Patient specific cutting guides generated by preoperative Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the patient's extremity have been proposed as a method of improving the consistency of Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) alignment and adding efficiency to the operative procedure. The cost of this option was evaluated by quantifying the savings from decreased operative time and instrument processing costs compared to the additional cost of the MRI and the guide. Coronal plane alignment was measured in an unselected consecutive series of 200 TKAs, 100 with standard instrumentation and 100 with custom cutting guides. While the cutting guides had significantly lower total operative time and instrument processing time, the estimated $322 savings was overwhelmed by the $1,500 additional cost of the MRI and the cutting guide. All measures of coronal plane alignment were equivalent between the two groups. The data does not currently support the proposition that patient specific guides add value to TKA.

RESUMEN

We present finite-bias transport measurements on a few-electron quantum dot. In the Coulomb-blockade regime, strong signatures of inelastic cotunneling occur which can directly be assigned to excited states observed in the nonblockaded regime. In addition, we observe structures related to sequential tunneling through the dot, occurring after it has been excited by an inelastic cotunneling process. We explain our findings using transport calculations within the real-time Green's function approach, including diagrams up to fourth order in the tunneling matrix elements.

RESUMEN

The diagnosis of intracerebral haematomas, especially of those which are relatively small, occupy little space and are deeply situated, presents considerable problems. The problem is even greater when the expected acute case history and the acute beginning of the symptoms do not occur and unusual localisations are found. The consequences of this are false diagnoses and the treatment of these patients within the framework of blanket diagnosis "intracerebral tumours" or "space occupying processes" without any confirmation of the histological diagnosis. - Using a sample of 26 patients where the histological diagnosis of non-recent intracerebral hemorrhages had been confirmed (out of a series of 818 CT-stereotactically biopsied patients punctured by us from the beginning of 1983 until the end of 1984), the problem of establishing a diagnosis is exposed. - A histological diagnoses should in any case be confirmed before any thorough and deep-reaching therapy is begun, since false diagnoses and misinterpretations can cause serious consequences for the patient.
