RESUMEN

A gut-brain axis (GBA) has a long history of conceptual development. Intestinal dysbiosis has now been recognized as a key player in the development of adult neurodevelopmental disorders, obesity, and inflammatory bowel disease. Recent developments in metagenomics suggest those nutrition and gut microbiotas (GM) are important regulators of the gut-brain communication pathways that cause neurodevelopmental and psychiatric problems in adulthood. Intestinal dysbiosis and neurodevelopmental disease outcomes in preterm newborns are being linked by recent research. Recent clinical investigations demonstrate that in critical care units, intestinal dysbiosis occurs before late-onset newborn sepsis and necrotizing enterocolitis. Strong epidemiologic data also shows a connection between necrotizing enterocolitis and extremely low birth weight babies' long-term psychomotor impairments and late-onset neonatal sepsis. The GBA theory suggests that intestinal bacteria may indirectly affect preterm newborns' developing brains. In this review, we emphasize the structure and function of the GBA and discuss how immune-microbial dysfunction in the gut affects the transmission of stress signals to the brain. Preterm babies who are exposed to these signals develop neurologic disorders. Understanding neuronal and humoral communication through the GBA may provide insight into therapeutic and nutritional strategies that may enhance the results of very low-birth-weight babies.

Splenic cysts are rare; their absence of an epithelial wall determines whether they're real cysts or pseudocysts. Spontaneous nonparasitic actual tumors are those that develop early in life at the anterior pole of the splenic and are typically epidermoid, dermoid, or endodermal. Surgical therapy is suggested for symptomatic, large (more than 5 cm) cysts or complicated. Inhaling splenic excision is a substitute for surgery, depending on the quantity, location, connection to the hilus, and dimension of the tumors. With an emphasis on less invasive treatments that preserve the spleen, laparoscopic methods have already established themselves as the accepted method for treating numerous disorders, including splenic cysts. They describe the effective decapsulation of a massive epidermoid spleen tumor under a prolonged, partially endoscopic technique. Laparoscopy, an operation commonly referred to as surgery with minimally invasive or keyhole surgery, is a technique that makes many tiny incisions in the belly to carry out different surgical procedures.

This study estimates the potential source regions contributing to PM2.5 in the capital city of Thimphu, Bhutan, during the years 2018-2020 using the ground-based data, followed by the HYSPLIT back trajectory analysis. The average PM2.5 concentration in the entire study period was 32.47 µg/m3 which is three times of the World Health Organization recommended limit of 10 µg/m3. Less than half of the days in pre-monsoon (43.47%) and post-monsoon (46.41%), and no days in winter were within the 24-h average WHO guideline of 25 µg/m3. During the COVID-19 lockdown imposed from August 11 to September 21 in Bhutan, only a marginal reduction of 4% in the PM2.5 concentrations was observed, indicating that nonlocal emissions dominate the PM2.5 concentrations in Thimphu, Bhutan. Most back trajectories in the analysis period were allocated to south or south-west sector. India was the major contributor (~ 44%), followed by Bangladesh (~ 19%), Bhutan itself (~ 19%) and China (~ 16%). This study confirms that there are significant contributions from transboundary sources to PM2.5 concentrations in Thimphu, Bhutan, and the elevated PM2.5 concentrations need to be tackled with appropriate action plans and interventions.

AIMS: To use a flow-based method to establish, quantify and visualize biofilms of Ureaplasma parvum. METHODS AND RESULTS: Absorbance readings of a U. parvum HPA5 culture were taken at 550 nm every 3 h for 30 h in order to establish a growth curve, with viability determined by the number of colour changing units (CCUs). Biofilms were established using the DTU flow-cell with a flow rate of 0·01 ml min-1 and compared to the static control. Titres of bacteria were determined by CCU and biofilm biomass was quantified by Syto9 staining and COMSTAT analysis. High-resolution images were obtained by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Flow resulted in significantly more biofilm and higher cell titre (0·599 µm3 /µm2  ± 0·152 and 4 × 108  CCU per ml, respectively) compared with static conditions (0·008 µm3 /µm2  ± 0·010 and no recoverable cells, respectively). SEM revealed pleomorphic cells, with signs of budding and possible membrane vesicle formation. CONCLUSIONS: Flow is an essential requirement for the establishment of U. parvum biofilms. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This is the first quantification of biofilm biomass formed by U. parvum. It is now possible to establish viable biofilms of U. parvum which will allow for future testing of antimicrobial agents and understanding of virulence-associated with adhesion.

The present study was aimed to determine the impact of thermal stress on expression dynamics of heat shock protein 60 (HSP60) mRNA in cultured cardiac fibroblast cells of the goat. The heart tissues (n = 6) from different goats were used for the culture study. The cardiac fibroblast cells were cultured and subjected to thermal stress at 42 °C for 0, 20, 60 and 100 min. The relative abundance of HSP60 mRNA was assessed by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). The cardiac cells exposed to thermal stress at 42 °C for 0 min was taken as control. The relative abundance of HSP60 mRNA did not change at 20 min of thermal stress as compared to control. Thereafter, the relative abundance of HSP60 mRNA was significantly up-regulated (p < 0.05) at 60 min and 100 min of thermal stress. However, the highest mRNA expression of HSP60 was noticed at 100 min of thermal stress. The present study indicates that, thermal stress modulates the mRNA expression HSP60 in cultured caprine cardiac fibroblast cells.

The adverse effect of barge movement on the river's aquatic ecosystem is of global concern. The phytoplankton community, a bioindicator, is possibly the foremost victim of the barge movement. This study hypothesized phytoplankton diversity loss induced by barge movement in a large river. This article presents a novel risk assessment framework to evaluate the hypothesis-with a goal to uncoupling phytoplankton diversity loss due to barge movement over a spatiotemporal scale. For this purpose, a study was conducted in the Bhagirathi-Hooghly stretch of Inland National Waterway 1 of India. This study has proposed a new index of diversity loss and its inferential framework based on full Bayesian Generalized Linear Mixed Model. The results have diagnosed significant barge-induced impact on the phytoplankton diversity and identified ten most impacted species. The proposed framework has successfully disentangled barge-induced phytoplankton diversity loss from the biological process and predicted a substantive overall risk of phytoplankton loss of 31.44%. Besides, it has uncoupled spatiotemporal differential estimates, suggesting a risk of diversity loss in order of 'During vs After' (38.0%) > 'Before vs After' (30.7%) > 'Before vs During' (24%) barge movement in temporal scale and increasing diversity loss along downstream. Finally, the instant study has highlighted the utility of these results to facilitate better water framework directive for inland waterways.

The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is rapidly spreading across the globe due to its contagion nature. We hereby report the baseline permanent levels of two most toxic air pollutants in top ranked mega cities of India. This could be made possible for the first time due to the unprecedented COVID-19 lockdown emission scenario. The study also unfolds the association of COVID-19 with different environmental and weather markers. Although there are numerous confounding factors for the pandemic, we find a strong association of COVID-19 mortality with baseline PM2.5 levels (80% correlation) to which the population is chronically exposed and may be considered as one of the critical factors. The COVID-19 morbidity is found to be moderately anti-correlated with maximum temperature during the pandemic period (-56%). Findings although preliminary but provide a first line of information for epidemiologists and may be useful for the development of effective health risk management policies.

Molecules ionized by intense (10-100 TW/cm2) and ultrashort (tens of femtoseconds) laser fields undergo rotation and alignment mediated through their polarizability. The expected alignment is indeed observed in the case of O2 molecules ionized by intense laser pulses of 800 nm wavelength and 25 fs duration, as observed through velocity imaging of the fragments. Strikingly, when 35 fs pulses of 400 nm wavelength of comparable intensity are employed, an anomalous hindering of this alignment is observed. In both cases, we propose dissociation pathways for the energetic ions consistent with the recorded kinetic energy distributions. Using a semiclassical model of induced rotation of the molecular ion that involves polarizabilities of the participating excited states, both behaviors are reproduced. The model suggests that the difference in the observations can be attributed to a transient negative polarizability in an intermediate state of the proposed pathway.

Japanese encephalitis (JE) has been reported in different districts of Odisha state (east central India) since 1992. During 2016, a major outbreak of JE and acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) occurred in the Malkangiri district of Odisha, causing 103 deaths in children, of which 37 were caused by JE and 66 by AES. Information on insecticide resistance in JE vectors is important for the selection of appropriate insecticides for use in vector control. The present study was designed to determine the resistance status of three important vectors of JE, Culex vishnui, Culex tritaeniorhynchus and Culex bitaeniorhynchus (Diptera: Culicidae), against dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), malathion and deltamethrin in three districts of Odisha state affected by JE. Female adult mosquitoes were collected using mouth aspirators both indoors and outdoors in JE-affected villages and used in susceptibility bioassays following World Health Organization guidelines. Knock-downs were recorded every 10 min up to 1 h and mortality rates were recorded at 24 h post-exposure. Culex vishnui and Cx. tritaeniorhynchus showed resistance to DDT, malathion and deltamethrin, whereas Cx. bitaeniorhynchus was susceptible in all study districts. The information generated by this study will be highly useful in the planning and implementing of appropriate vector control operations for the prevention and control of JE in east central India.

The fate of a pollutant in the environment depends on its interaction with the surroundings. Henry's law constant (HLC) is one of the important properties useful for assessment of environmental risk and estimation of mass transfer of the pollutant between water and air. Estimation of HLC is relatively a difficult task for many of the organic pollutants due to their very low aqueous solubility. People have attempted the measurement of HLC for persistent organic pollutants, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), but due to the difficulty in estimation, there is a variation of approximately 2-3 orders of magnitude in reported values of HLC for PCBs in the literature. A study was performed for estimation of HLC for PCBs using the static method with a modification that eliminates any disturbance in equilibrium due to sampling and also avoids removal or addition of material in or out of the system unlike the conventional methods. The results were consistent with the literature values. The experimental values of HLC ranged from 0.004 to 0.08 for different congeners. All of the experimental values were in agreement with the literature values. The experimental data was further used for deriving a correlation equation for theoretical estimation of the HLC from aqueous solubility and chlorination number. The equation gave a very good estimation of HLC values for all the PCBs congeners except single- and double-chlorinated congeners. The theoretically predicted values were also found to be in close agreement with the reported HLC values.

BACKGROUND: Interleukin (IL)-31 is implicated in pruritus associated with pruritic skin diseases like atopic dermatitis. Although pruritus is a prominent feature in dermatomyositis (DM), few studies have evaluated the pathogenesis of DM-associated itch. OBJECTIVES: To establish the prevalence of itch in DM, and to investigate the role of IL-31 in DM-related itch. METHODS: Pruritus and disease activity of DM were evaluated by a visual analogue scale (VAS) and the Cutaneous Disease and Activity Severity Index (CDASI), respectively. Expression of IL-31 and IL-31 receptor alpha (IL-31RA) in lesional DM, nonlesional DM and healthy control skin was evaluated by quantitative reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction and immunofluorescence. Flow cytometry was performed on skin cells isolated from lesional DM skin to identify cellular sources of IL-31 in DM. RESULTS: Among 191 patients with DM, 50·8% had moderate-to-severe itch, and itch was correlated with increased cutaneous severity (r = 0·34). In patients with itchy DM, gene expression of IL31 and IL31RA in lesional skin was upregulated compared with nonlesional skin and healthy control skin. IL31 mRNA expression positively correlated with VAS itch score (r = 0·67). On immunofluorescence, immunoreactivity for IL-31 and IL-31RA was stronger in lesional skin. Flow cytometry showed that lesional DM skin contained significantly more IL-31-producing cells, and CD4+ cells were the most common cell type. Lenabasum, an emerging treatment for DM, significantly downregulated IL-31 from CpG-stimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cells. CONCLUSIONS: Increased skin IL-31 may play a role in DM-associated itch, and ongoing trials will evaluate the effects of systemic treatment on IL-31 and itch in DM.

Herein, we report a new approach to bio-inspired catalyst design. The molecular catalyst employed in these studies is based on the robust and selective Re(bpy)(CO)3Cl-type (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) homogeneous catalysts, which have been extensively studied for their ability to reduce CO2 electrochemically or photochemically in the presence of a photosensitizer. These catalysts can be highly active photocatalysts in their own right. In this work, the bipyridine ligand was modified with amino acids and synthetic peptides. These results build on earlier findings wherein the bipyridine ligand was functionalized with amide groups to promote dimer formation and CO2 reduction by an alternate bimolecular mechanism at lower overpotential (ca. 250 mV) than the more commonly observed unimolecular process. The bio-inspired catalysts were designed to allow for the incorporation of proton relays to support reduction of CO2 to CO and H2O. The coupling of amino acids tyrosine and phenylalanine led to the formation of two structurally similar Re catalyst/peptide catalysts for comparison of proton transport during catalysis. This article reports the synthesis and characterization of novel catalyst/peptide hybrids by molecular dynamics (MD simulations of structural dynamics), NMR studies of solution phase structures, and electrochemical studies to measure the activities of new bio-inspired catalysts in the reduction of CO2.

Trace metals (Pb, Cu and Cd) in seawater samples were pre-concentrated for the simultaneous quantitative determination using solvent extraction procedure in the presence of ammonium pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (APDC) as complexing agent and methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) as organic phase and acid exchange back - extraction followed by its determination by Differential Pulse Anodic Stripping Voltammetry (DPASV). Concentrations of Pb, Cu and Cd vary from 3.0 to 9.44 ng/mL, 12.7 to 28.6 ng/mL and 0.31 to 1.21 ng/mL respectively in seawater samples collected from different locations across Thane Creek area, Mumbai, India. Pb, Cu, Cd concentration were observed to be higher in the eastern side of the Thane Creek as it is covered by various industries.

Apoptosis plays an important role in atherogenesis and rupture of vulnerable plaques in coronary artery disease. FAS and FAS ligand (FASL) induce apoptosis when FAS binds to FAS-L. However sFas blocks apoptosis by binding to FAS and FASL or sFasL. The present study is sought to examine the role of extrinsic apoptotic genes (FAS, FASL) polymorphism and serum levels of FAS, FASL in the pathogenesis and susceptibility to CAD in south Indian population. The study included 300 CAD patients and 300 healthy controls. Lipid profiles, sFas, sFasL were estimated by commercially available kits. FAS -670 G>A, FASL -844 T>C genotypes were analyzed by PCR-RFLP. Secondary structures of pre mRNA were analyzed by the Vienna RNA webserver and gene-gene and gene-environment interactions were determined by MDR analysis. Total cholesterol, triglyceride and LDL levels were significantly high in CAD patients compared to the controls. Molecular analysis revealed that the frequency of the AA genotype of FAS (54% vs 27%) and CC genotypes of FASL (10.3% vs 1.3%) were high in CAD patients compared to controls. Secondary structure analysis of FAS and FASL confirmed our molecular analysis. sFas levels were low while serum sFasL were high in CAD patients. MDR analysis revealed synergistic effects of gene polymorphisms and additive effects of epidemiological factors on risk of CAD. Polymorphisms of FAS (-670 G/A), FASL (-844 T/C) and their circulating levels play an important role in the pathology of CAD.

Studies on leaching behavior of metals associated with coal fly ash (FA) are of great concern because of possible contamination of the aquatic environment. In the present study, leaching behavior of metals (As, Se, Cr, Pb, V, Zn, etc.) in two different FA samples (FA1 and FA2) was investigated at various pH (2-12), temperatures of leachate solution and using TCLP. At pH 2, the highest leaching was observed for Fe (21.6 and 32.8 µg/g), whereas at pH 12, Arsenic was found to have the highest leaching (1.5 and 2.4 µg/g) in FA1 and FA2. Leachate solution temperature showed a positive effect on the metal's leachability. In TCLP, most of the metal's leachability was observed to be higher than that of batch leaching tests. The present study suggests that, leaching of As and Se from FA samples can moderately affect ground/surface water quality at the study locations.

BACKGROUND: Earlier detection of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD) is essential for dental professionals to improve patient survival rates. The aim of this systematic review is to to evaluate the effectiveness of devices that utilise the principles of chemiluminescence and tissue autofluorescence as adjuncts in the detection of OSCC and OPMD. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The electronic retrieval systems and databases searched for relevant articles were PubMed [MEDLINE] and Science direct. The search was for limited articles published in English or with an English abstract and articles published during the period from January 2005 to April 2014. Clinical trials utilized ViziLite, Microlux TM/DL and Visual Enhanced Light scope (VELscope) for early detection of OPMD and OSCC. RESULTS: Twenty primary studies published satisfied our criteria for selection - 10 utilised chemiluminescence and 10 tissue autofluorescence. Senstivity of Vizilite for detecting OSCC nad OPMD ranged from 77.1 % to 100% and specificity was low that ranged from 0% to 27.8%.Most have shown that chemiluminescence increases the brightness and margins of oral mucosal white lesions and thus assist in identification of mucosal lesions not considered under Conventional visual examination. However, it preferentially detects leukoplakia and may fail to spot red patches. Clinical trials demonstrated that sensitivity of VELscope in detecting malignancy and OPMD ranged from 22 % to 100 % and specificity ranged from 16 % to 100%. Most studies concluded that VELscope can help the experienced clinician to find oral precursor malignant lesions. But it couldnot differentiate between dysplasia and benign inflammatory conditions. CONCLUSIONS: Both devices are simple, non-invasive test of the oral mucosa but are suited for clinicians with sufficient experience and training. More clinical trials in future should be conducted to establish optical imaging as an efficacious adjunct tool in early diagnosis of OSCC and OPMD.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) have become an essential surveillance tool in the malaria control programme in India. The current study aimed to assess the performance of ParaHIT-f, a rapid test in diagnosis of Plasmodium falciparum infection through detecting its specific antigen, histidine rich protein 2 (PfHRP-2), in Odisha State, India. METHODS: The study was undertaken in eight falciparum malaria endemic southern districts of Odisha State. Febrile patients included through active case detection, were diagnosed by Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) for P. falciparum infection using the RDT, ParaHIT-f. The performance of ParaHIT-f was evaluated using microscopy as the gold standard. RESULTS: A total of 1030 febrile patients were screened by both microscopy and the RDT for P. falciparum infection. The sensitivity of ParaHIT-f was 63.6% (95% CI: 56.0-70.6) and specificity was 98.9% (95% CI: 97.9-99.5), with positive and negative predictive values (PPV and NPV) of 92.6% (95% CI: 86.0-96.3) and 93.0% (95% CI: 91.0-94.5), respectively. When related to parasitaemia, the RDT sensitivity was 47.8% at the low parasitaemia of 4 to 40 parasites/µl of blood. INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSIONS: The results showed that the performance of the RDT, ParaHIT-f, was not as sensitive as microscopy in detecting true falciparum infections; a high specificity presented a low frequency of false-positive RDT results. t0 he sensitivity of ParaHIT-f was around 60 per cent. It is, therefore, essential to improve the efficiency (sensitivity) of the kit so that the true falciparum infections will not be missed especially in areas where P. falciparum has been the predominant species causing cerebral malaria.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: In Odisha State, the control of malaria vectors has become dependent on synthetic pyrethroids, which are used for treatment of all approved long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs). The vast use of just one class of insecticide has led to the problem of resistance to insecticides in malaria vectors. One of the major malaria vectors in Odisha State is Anopheles culicifacies Giles. The aim of this study was to determine the resistance status of An. culicifacies to deltamethrin, a synthetic pyrethroid and other common insecticides used by the National Vector Borne Diseases Control Programme (NVBDCP) for indoor residual spraying in Odisha State. METHODS: Mosquitoes were collected during April 2014 - June 2014 from 15 randomly selected villages in five p0 lasmodium falciparum endemic southern districts of Odisha State. The blood-fed wild caught females were exposed to the diagnostic dosage of DDT (4.0%), malathion (5.0%) and deltamethrin (0.05%) for one hour. Mortality was recorded at 24 h after the exposure. RESULTS: Results indicated that An. culicifacies was resistant to all the three insecticides used in the malaria control programme in the five districts of Odisha State. INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSIONS: Resistance management strategy by appropriate rotation of different groups of insecticides including carbamates and incorporating a synergist with synthetic pyrethroids for treating mosquito nets should be considered for the control of malaria vectors in the area, especially where An. culicifacies is predominant. Periodical monitoring of susceptibility/resistance status of An. culicifacies to different insecticides is warranted.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: One of the major strategies being pursued for malaria control by the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme is the distribution of long lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) in endemic areas since 2009. Information on durability of insecticidal efficacy and physical integrity of LLINs and community usage at different time intervals of their use is essential to plan net replacements to maintain universal coverage for an effective and sustainable malaria control strategy. Therefore, a study was undertaken to assess these parameters in two malaria endemic districts of the Odisha State. METHODS: A total of 309 households were selected in 15 villages of two community health centres (CHCs) (Borigumma and Laxmipur) from Koraput district and one (Khairput) from Malkangiri district. Data on net usage were collected during March to July 2014 using semi-structured questionnaires. PermaNet 2.0 were sampled from all households, replaced with new ones, and bioassays were carried out to determine the insecticidal efficacy of LLINs after four and half, four and two years of field use following the standard procedure of World Health Organization. RESULTS: LLIN use rate varied from 57.9 to 90.2 per cent in the study CHCs. The annual washing rate per net in Borigumma, Khairput and Laxmipur was 6.6, 3.2 and 4.8, respectively. The LLINs used two years in the field caused 100 per cent mortality and four to four and half years caused below 80 per cent mortality, except one net. INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSIONS: Nearly 20 per cent of the people were out of net coverage and hence the Programme to ensure 100 per cent coverage. The community should adequately be educated so as to increase the net use rate and avoid incorrect washing practices.
