RESUMEN

Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is a common organ dysfunction in patients with severe sepsis or septic shock and leads to higher mortality and longer hospital stay. The diagnosis remains an exclusion process; none of the available measurements are specific for SAE. The aim of the presented prospective and controlled clinical study was to evaluate the possible role of molecular acoustics in determining acute brain injury in septic patients using an acoustocerebrography (ACG) system. ACG is a multifrequency, transcranial ultrasound method that measures the attenuation and time of flight to detect changes in the brain tissue. After approval from the local research ethics committee (of the University Hospital of Rostock: Reg. No.: A 2016-0026), 20 patients were included in two study groups: septic shock group (SG) and control group (CG; postoperative nonseptic patients). All patients were screened several times with the ACG on different days. Blood parameters of organ function, sepsis-related organ failure assessment score, and delirium scores [Confusion Assessment Method for the Intensive Care Unit (CAM-ICU) and Intensive Care Delirium Screening Checklist (ICDSC)] were obtained as well. A neurologist examined all patients at inclusion. Predictive analysis was done using a data-driven statistical method and by deriving a parameter from the ACG data. The study was registered under "clinicaltrials.gov" (Reg. No.: NCT03173196). All patients in the SG were CAM-ICU-positive at inclusion (ICDSC: in mean 4.0) and had clinical signs of SAE. In contrast, all patients in the CG were CAM-ICU-negative, with an ICDSC score of 0. Predictive analysis using the ACG data presented an accuracy of 83.4% with a specificity of 89.0% and a sensitivity of 75.1%. The ACG method may be helpful for the monitoring and diagnosing acute brain injury; however, the results of this first report should be verified by further clinical studies. Further investigations should include long-established instruments of SAE diagnosis, e.g., electroencephalography, MRI, and biomarkers, to compare the results with the ACG measurements.

The aim of this work was to develop a new coating material based on Ni20Cr alloy modified with up to 50%wt. rhenium. The modification was carried out by the mechanical mixing of the base powder and ammonium perrhenate with the subsequent thermoreduction in an H2 atmosphere. The obtained powder consists of a nickel-chromium core surrounded by a rhenium shell. The characterization of the powders-including their microstructure, phase and chemical composition, density, flowability, particle size distribution, and specific surface area-was performed. The influence of plasma current intensity and hydrogen gas flow on in-flight particle temperature and velocity were investigated. The results indicate that there is interdiffusion between the base Ni20Cr and the rhenium shell, resulting in intermediary solid solution(s). The modified powders have a higher specific surface area and a lower flowability, but this does not prevent them from being used as feedstock in plasma spraying. In-flight measurements reveal that increasing the content of rhenium allows for the higher temperature of particles, though it also reduces their speed.

This paper examines the surface roughness of a thin brass wire (140-200 microns in diameter) after two dieless drawing (DD) processes, i.e., conventional dieless drawing (CDD) and incremental dieless drawing (IDD). In incremental dieless drawing, small increments in deformation were applied in several passes. It has been proven that the IDD process not only has a greater efficiency but also enables obtaining a wire with significantly lower surface roughness. The explanation for these effects is based on the results of the numerical modeling of both compared processes. The developed numerical model takes into consideration the initial roughness of the wire surface, shape and dimensions of grains, and their diversified mechanical properties. Nanoindentation measurements, microstructure, and plastometric studies allowed us to find the effective flow stress distribution in the grains. The IDD process was found to be much more stable and develop a much more uniform distribution of grain strain than the CDD process. More homogeneous deformation results in surface roughness reduction. Approximately 25-30% reduction in surface roughness of the wire produced by the IDD process was predicted by simulations and confirmed experimentally.

Microstructural changes in grade 2 titanium generated by surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) were studied using positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy and complementary methods. A significant increase in the mean positron lifetime indicated many lattice defects introduced by SMAT. Two positron lifetime components were resolved in the positron lifetime spectra measured. The longer lifetime revealed the presence of vacancy clusters containing about 3 or 4 vacancies, while the shorter one was attributed to the annihilation of positrons trapped at dislocations. The changes of the positron lifetime indicated a decreasing dislocation density and the presence of a deeper layer with a higher concentration of vacancy clusters at the distance from the treated surface for which the microhardness approached the value for the strain-free matrix. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy showed the positive effect of SMAT on the corrosion resistance of the titanium studied in a saline environment also after removal of the original oxide layer that was formed during the SMAT.

The MgCa0.7 alloy may be a promising material for biodegradable surgical wires. In this paper, the technology for producing surgical wires from this alloy has been developed, based both on finite element modelling and experimental study. In particular, the extrusion and hot-drawing effects on the mechanical properties, microstructures, in-vitro rates of biocorrosion, and cytotoxicity to human cancer cells (SaOS-2) and healthy (hPDL) ones, have been determined. An approximately 30-40% increase in corrosion rate due to increasing hot-drawing temperature was observed. An effect of hot-drawing temperature on cytotoxicity was also found. Notably, at various stages of the final wires' production, the MgCa0.7 alloy became toxic to cancer cells. This cytotoxicity depended on the alloys' processing parameters and was maximal for the as-extruded rod and for the wires immediately after hot drawing at 440 °C. Thus, the careful selection of processing parameters makes it possible to obtain a product that is not only a promising candidate for biodegradable surgical wires, but one which also has intrinsic bioactive properties that produce antitumor activity.

Surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) was used to generate a gradient microstructure in commercial grade magnesium. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy and variable energy positron beam measurements, as well as microhardness tests, electron backscatter diffraction, X-ray diffraction, and electrochemical corrosion tests, were used to investigate the created subsurface microstructure and its properties. It was found that SMAT causes an increase in dislocation density and grain refinement which results in increased hardness of the subsurface zone. The mean positron lifetime values indicate trapping of positrons in vacancies associated with dislocations and dislocation jogs. The increase of the SMAT duration and the vibration amplitude influences the depth profile of the mean positron lifetime, which reflects the defect concentration profile. Electrochemical measurements revealed that the structure induced by SMAT increases the susceptibility of magnesium to anodic oxidation, leading to the enhanced formation of hydroxide coverage at the surface and, as a consequence, to the decrease in corrosion current. No significant effect of the treatment on the residual stress was found.

Acoustocerebrography is a novel, non-invasive, transcranial ultrasonic diagnostic method based on the transmission of multispectral ultrasound signals propagating through the brain tissue. Dedicated signal processing enables the estimation of absorption coefficient, frequency-dependent attenuation, speed of sound and tissue elasticity. Hypertension and atrial fibrillation are well known factors correlated with white matter lesions, intracerebral hemorrhage and cryptogenic stroke numbers. The aim of this study was to compare the acoustocerebrography signal in the brains of asymptomatic atrial fibrillation patients with and without hypertension. The study included 97 asymptomatic patients (40 female and 57 male, age 66.26 ± 6.54 years) who were clinically monitored for atrial fibrillation. The patients were divided into two groups: group I (patients with hypertension) n = 75, and group II (patients without hypertension) n = 22. Phase and amplitude of all spectral components for the received signals from the brain path were extracted and compared to the phase and amplitude of the transmitted pulse. Next, the time of flight and the attenuation of each frequency component were calculated. Additionally, a fast Fourier transformation was performed and its features were extracted. After introducing a machine learning technique, the ROC plot of differentiations between group I and group II with an AUC of 0.958 (sensitivity 0.99 and specificity 0.968) was obtained. It can be assumed that the significant difference in the acoustocerebrography signals in patients with hypertension is due to changes in the brain tissue, and it allows for the differentiating of high-risk patients with asymptomatic atrial fibrillation and hypertension.

The main focus of the presented work was the investigation of structure and residual stress gradients in the near-surface region of materials studied by X-ray diffraction. The multireflection method was used to measure depth-dependent stress variation in near-surface layers of a Ti sample (grade 2) subjected to different mechanical treatments. First, the multireflection grazing incidence diffraction method was applied on a classical diffractometer with Cu Kα radiation. The applicability of the method was then extended by using a white synchrotron beam during an energy dispersive (ED) diffraction experiment. An advantage of this method was the possibility of using not only more than one reflection but also different wavelengths of radiation. This approach was successfully applied to analysis of data obtained in the ED experiment. There was good agreement between the measurements performed using synchrotron radiation and those with Cu Kα radiation on the classical diffractometer. A great advantage of high-energy synchrotron radiation was the possibility to measure stresses as well as the a0 parameter and c0/a0 ratio for much larger depths in comparison with laboratory X-rays.

Positron annihilation spectroscopy and complementary methods were used to detect changes induced by sandblasting of alumina particles at different pressures varying from 1 to 6 bar in pure well-annealed copper. The positron lifetime measurements revealed existence of dislocations and vacancy clusters in the adjoined surface layer. The presence of retained alumina particles in the copper at the depth below 50 µm was found in the SEM pictures and also in the annihilation line shape parameter profiles measured in the etching experiment. The profiles show us that the total depth of damaged zones induced by sandblasting of alumina particles ranges from 140 µm up to ca. 800 µm and it depends on the applied pressure. The work-hardening of the adjoined surface layer was found in the microhardness measurements at the cross-section of the sandblasted samples.

The studies were carried out on 9 farms which deals with meat race of rabbits breeding. The basic herds had from 28 to 63 rabbits (total 275 rabbits) on Choszczno and Recz district in West Pomerania province. The study was based on two flotation methods:Willis-Schlaaf for qualitative and McMaster for quantitative analysis, which helped to establish the number of oocysts in 1g of feces (OPG). Ten species of coccidian were found in which 9 were intestinal (E. exigua, E. perforans, E. media, E. magna, E. irresidua, E. coecicola, E. flavescens, E. piriformis, E. intestinalis) and one was living in liver (E. stiedai). Baycox (Bayer) was used in drinking water in a dose of 25 ppm in 1 liter of water for 2 days. In rabbits from the experimental groups higher weight gain and lower mortality compared to the control group animals were observed. The results highlight the beneficial effects of coccidiostats used in the production effects in rabbits.
