RESUMEN

Brassinosteroid (BR) phytohormones play crucial roles in regulating internode elongation in rice (Oryza sativa). However, the underlying mechanism remains largely unclear. The dwarf and low-tillering (dlt) mutant is a mild BR-signaling-defective mutant. Here, we identify two dlt enhancers that show more severe shortening of the lower internodes compared to the uppermost internode (IN1). Both mutants carry alleles of ORYZA SATIVA HOMEOBOX 15 (OSH15), the founding gene for dwarf6-type mutants, which have shortened lower internodes but not IN1. Consistent with the mutant phenotype, OSH15 expression is much stronger in lower internodes, particularly in IN2, than IN1. The osh15 single mutants have impaired BR sensitivity accompanied by enhanced BR synthesis in seedlings. DLT physically interacts with OSH15 to co-regulate many genes in seedlings and internodes. OSH15 targets and promotes the expression of the BR receptor gene BR INSENSITIVE1 (OsBRI1), and DLT facilitates this regulation in a dosage-dependent manner. In osh15, dlt, and osh15 dlt, BR levels are higher in seedlings and panicles, but unexpectedly lower in internodes compared with the wild-type. Taken together, our results suggest that DLT interacts with OSH15, which functions in the lower internodes, to modulate rice internode elongation via orchestrating BR signaling and metabolism.

BACKGROUND. Use of virtual monoenergetic images (VMIs) from multienergy CT scans can mitigate inconsistencies in traditional attenuation measurements that result from variation in scan-related factors. Photon-counting detector (PCD) CT systems produce VMIs as standard image output under flexible scanning conditions. OBJECTIVE. The purpose of this article was to evaluate the consistency of monoenergetic attenuation measurements obtained from a clinical PCD CT scanner across a spectrum of scanning paradigms. METHODS. A phantom with 10 tissue-simulating inserts was imaged using a clinical dual-source PCD CT scanner. Nine scanning paradigms were obtained across combinations of tube voltages (90, 120, and 140 kVp) and image quality (IQ) levels (80, 145, and 180). Images were reconstructed at VMI levels of 50, 60, 70, and 80 keV. Consistency of attenuation measurements was assessed, using the 120 kVp with IQ level of 145 scanning paradigm as the reference scan. RESULTS. For all scanning paradigms, attenuation measurements showed intra-class correlation of 0.999 and higher with respect to the reference scan. Across inserts, mean bias relative to the reference scan ranged from -14.9 to 13.6 HU, -2.7 to 1.7 HU, and -3.9 to 3.8 HU at tube voltages of 90, 120, and 140 kVp, respectively; and from -14.9 to 13.6 HU, -6.4 to 3.8 HU, -3.7 to 1.4 HU, and -7.2 to 4.3 HU at VMI levels of 50, 60, 70, and 80 keV, respectively. Thus, mean bias did not exceed 5 HU for any insert at tube potentials of 120 kVp and 140 kVp, nor for any insert at a VMI level of 70 keV. At a VMI level of 50 keV and tube potential of 90 kVp, mean bias exceeded 5 HU for 14 of 30 possible combinations of inserts and scanning paradigms and exceeded 10 HU for four of 30 such combinations. At VMI levels of both 60 and 80 keV, mean bias exceeded 5 HU for only two combinations of inserts and scanning paradigms, all at a tube potential of 90 kVp. CONCLUSION. PCD CT generally provided consistent attenuation measurements across combinations of scanning paradigms and VMI levels. CLINICAL IMPACT. PCD CT may facilitate quantitative applications of CT data in clinical practice.

Endowing perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) with circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) offers great promise for innovative chiroptical applications, but the existing strategies are inefficient in acquiring stimuli-responsive flexible chiral perovskite films with large, tunable dissymmetry factor (glum) and long-term stability. Here, we report a strategy for the design and synthesis of luminescent cholesteric liquid crystal elastomer (Lumin-CLCE) films with mechanically tunable CPL, which is enabled by liquid crystal-templated chiral self-assembly and in situ covalent cross-linking of judiciously designed photopolymerizable CsPbX3 (X=Cl, Br, I) PQD nanomonomers into the elastic polymer networks. The resulting Lumin-CLCE films showcase circularly polarized structural color in natural light and noticeable CPL with a maximum glum value of up to 1.5 under UV light. The manipulation of CPL intensity and rotation direction is achieved by controlling the self-assembled helicoidal nanostructure and the handedness of soft helices. A significant breakthrough lies in the achievement of a reversible, mechanically tunable perovskite-based CPL switch activated by biaxial stretching, which enables flexible, dynamic anti-counterfeiting labels capable of decrypting preset information in specific polarization states. This work can provide new insights for the development of advanced chiral perovskite materials and their emerging applications in information encryption, flexible 3D displays, and beyond.

The sluggish reaction kinetics and severe shutting behaviors of sulfur cathodes are the major roadblocks to realizing the practical application of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries and need to be solved through designing/constructing rational sulfur hosts. Herein, an effective alternative material of Fe3 O4- x /FeP in-situ embedded in N-doped carbon-tube (Fe3 O4- x /FeP/NCT) is proposed. In this fabricated heterostructure, NCT skeleton works as a sulfur host provides physical barrier for lithium polysulfides (LiPSs), while Fe3 O4- x /FeP heterostructure with abundant oxygen vacancies provides double active centers to simultaneously accelerate e- /Li+ diffusion/transport kinetics and catalysis for LiPSs. Through the respective advantages, Fe3 O4- x /FeP/NCT exhibits synergy enhancement effect for restraining sulfur dissolution and enhancing its conversion kinetics. Furthermore, the promoted ion diffusion kinetics, enhanced electrical conductivity, and increased active sites of Fe3 O4- x /FeP/NCT are enabled by oxygen vacancies as well as the heterogeneous interfacial contact, which is clearly confirmed by experimental and first-principles calculations. By virtue of these superiorities, the constructed cathode shows excellent long-term cycling stability and a high-rate capability up to 10 C. Specially, a high areal capacity of 7.2 mAh cm-2 is also achieved, holding great promise for utilization in advanced Li-S batteries in the future.

The terahertz (THz) region vibration spectral signatures of molecular crystals can usually be ascribed to the low-frequency vibrational modes related to weak intermolecular interactions, e.g. van der Waals (vdW) interactions or hydrogen bonding. These interactions collectively dictate the compositional units deviating from their equilibrium configurations. The collective movements are intrinsically long-range, and hence the boundary conditions used for theoretical calculation can affect the corresponding potential energy gradients and alter the vibrational features. In this work, we constructed a series of finite-sized cluster models with varying sizes and an extended periodic crystal model for L-ascorbic acid (L-AA) crystals. Density functionals with both semi-local contributions and nonlocal vdW terms, implemented with either atom-centered Gaussian basis or plane waves, were tested. By comparing first principles calculations with experimental time-domain spectra (TDS), we found that the non-local vdW functional opt-B88 combined with a periodic boundary condition is capable of assigning all the experimental features in the 0.2-1.6 THz region. Calculations with cluster models failed in this task. Even worse, the deficiency of the cluster models varied with cluster sizes, and did not converge as the cluster size grew. Our results demonstrate that an appropriate periodic boundary condition is essential to correctly assign and analyze the THz vibration spectra of molecular crystals.

BACKGROUND: Contrast-induced encephalopathy (CIE) is considered as an uncommon complication following cardiac catheterization. Due to the varied manifestations, CIE has no formal diagnostic criteria. In fact, the incidence of CIE may be greatly underestimated because of the difficulty in its differential diagnosis with other cerebrovascular complications. Thus, making a flow diagram according to patients' clinical symptoms and examinations after cardiac catheterization to help clinicians diagnose CIE is important and needed. CASE PRESENTATION: In this report, we describe a case of probable CIE in a 66-year-old Chinese man with hypertension who underwent cardiac catheterization with stents placement in the bifurcation lesion, during which 80 ml iopromide contrast was used. About 2 h following the procedure, the patient lost his consciousness suddenly and suffered from a status epilepticus. Malignant arrhythmias were not found through continuous electrocardiogram monitoring, but mild ST-segment elevation was displayed in leads I and aVL. The echocardiography, plasma glucose and electrolyte levels were normal. Emergency re-angiography with percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty was performed in the culprit lesion, which involved 60 ml iopromide contrast. However, the patient remained unconsciousness and epilepticus. Non-contrast computed tomography (CT) of the head showed cortical and subarachnoid enhancement as well as prolonged retention of contrast media in the middle cerebral artery. With supportive treatment of intravenous hydration, sedative and dehydrant, the patient recovered 3 h later and finally discharged without any neurological deficits. CONCLUSIONS: CIE is an acute reversible encephalopathy induced by contrast media. It is exceptionally challenging to make the diagnosis of CIE following cardiac catheterization since there is a lack of consensus on the definition of CIE. Via this case we reviewed the related literatures, through which a flow diagram of the differential diagnosis and clinical decision making was given, which could help to differentiate CIE from other neurological complications following cardiac catheterization.

A hollow porphyrin-based porous organic polymer (H-Fe-POP) was prepared for rapid and sensitive colorimetric determination of Cr(VI), which exhibited excellent dual enzyme-like activities, including oxidase-like and peroxidase-like activities. Due to the specific binding of 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ) to Cr(VI), 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) was liberated, and TMB was oxidized to blue ox-TMB catalyzed by H-Fe-POP. Based on the excellent oxidase-like activity of H-Fe-POP, an ultra-fast colorimetric platform for the detection of Cr(VI) was constructed, allowing the quantification of Cr(VI) in the range 2-130 µM within 30 s with a detection limit of 0.23 µM. Importantly, the sensor can accurately determine Cr(VI) in industrial wastewater, indicating its high potential for environmental monitoring.

BACKGROUND: Post-processing and interpretation of coronary CT angiography (CCTA) imaging are time-consuming and dependent on the reader's experience. An automated deep learning (DL)-based imaging reconstruction and diagnosis system was developed to improve diagnostic accuracy and efficiency. METHODS: Our study including 374 cases from five sites, inviting 12 radiologists, assessed the DL-based system in diagnosing obstructive coronary disease with regard to diagnostic performance, imaging post-processing and reporting time of radiologists, with invasive coronary angiography as a standard reference. The diagnostic performance of DL system and DL-assisted human readers was compared with the traditional method of human readers without DL system. RESULTS: Comparing the diagnostic performance of human readers without DL system versus with DL system, the AUC was improved from 0.81 to 0.82 (p < 0.05) at patient level and from 0.79 to 0.81 (p < 0.05) at vessel level. An increase in AUC was observed in inexperienced radiologists (p < 0.05), but was absent in experienced radiologists. Regarding diagnostic efficiency, comparing the DL system versus human reader, the average post-processing and reporting time was decreased from 798.60 s to 189.12 s (p < 0.05). The sensitivity and specificity of using DL system alone were 93.55% and 59.57% at patient level and 83.23% and 79.97% at vessel level, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: With the DL system serving as a concurrent reader, the overall post-processing and reading time was substantially reduced. The diagnostic accuracy of human readers, especially for inexperienced readers, was improved. DL-assisted human reader had the potential of being the reading mode of choice in clinical routine.

Brassinosteroids (BRs) regulate various agronomic traits such as plant height, leaf angle, and grain size in rice (Oryza sativa L.); thus, BR signaling components are promising targets for molecular rational design. However, genetic materials for BR-signaling genes or family members remain limited in rice. Here, by genome editing using clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRSPR)/Cas9 tools, we generated a panel of single, double, triple, or quadruple mutants within three BR signaling gene families, including GSK3/SHAGGY-LIKE KINASE1 (GSK1)-GSK4, BRASSINAZOLE-RESISTANT1 (OsBZR1)-OsBZR4, and protein phosphatases with kelch-like (PPKL)1-PPKL3, under the same background (Zhonghua11, japonica). The high-order mutants were produced by either simultaneously targeting multiple sites on different genes of one family (GSKs and PPKLs) or targeting the overlapping sequences of family members (OsBZRs). The mutants exhibited a diversity of plant height, leaf angle, and grain morphology. Comparison analysis of the phenotypes together with BR sensitivity tests suggested the existence of functional redundancy, differentiation, or dominancy among the members within each family. In addition, we generated a set of transgenic plants overexpressing GSK2, OsBZR1/2, and PPKL2, respectively, in wild-type or activated forms with fusion of different tags, and also verified the protein response to BR application. Collectively, these plants greatly enriched the diversity of important agronomic traits in rice. We propose that editing of BR-related family genes could be a feasible approach for screening of desired plants to meet different requirements. Release of these materials as well as the related information also provides valuable resources for further BR research and utilization.

The countries along the Belt and Road (B&R) are characterized by fragile ecosystems and underdevelopment economy. International trade usually transferred the eco-environmental negative impacts to developing countries. How to avoid the conflict between economic development and eco-environmental protection is the primary concern of building the Green Silk Road. To discover the adaptive strategies for ensuring the sustainability of the social-ecosystem in countries along the B&R, this study analyzes the supply-consumption relationship of ecological resources by simulating the flow of net primary productivity between the ecosystem and the social system. The results show that: (1) The flow of ecological resources between agricultural and husbandry systems have effectively alleviated the local ecological pressure caused by animal husbandry in countries along the B&R. Animal husbandry in developed countries economize the local ecological resources by importing feed, while mitigating the grazing pressure by utilizing the local crop residues in underdeveloped agricultural countries. (2) International trade not only enables countries with insufficient ecological resources to meet their demands by importing ecological products and thus alleviate ecosystem pressure, but also promotes countries with sufficient ecological resources to transform their resource advantages into economic advantages by exporting without at the expense of ecological sustainability. (3) For underdeveloped countries, the dependence of economic development on ecological resources is at the expense of the living demands of residents, only if the economy could have leap-forward improvement the allocation of ecological resources within the social system would be inclined to living demands. These adaptive approaches not only provide the evidences of ecological-social sustainable development by promoting the reasonable flow and allocation of ecological resources, but also imply the necessary assistance for the underdeveloped countries to guarantee the basic human well-being in economic development.

The instability of international trade can threaten the resource security of resource-importing countries, while international trade helps address spatial mismatches between regional populations, economies, and resources. Ecological products are the basis for human survival and development, in which agri-livestock products are especially sensitive to trade fluctuation and closely related to human well-being. The external dependence is an important indicator to reveal the external supply risk of regional resources. Scientific understanding the external dependence of ecological products can reveal the potential risks of trade fluctuations to human well-being and ecological sustainability. In this study, the global status and trend of countries' external dependence of agri-livestock ecological products are investigated. The results showed that nearly 80% (141) of countries relied on imports to meet ecological product demands in 2018, in which Asian-African-Latin countries accounted for about 78%, which indicated that the instability of international trade would threaten the ecological resource security in 80% of the world's countries, especially for underdeveloped countries. Even worse, 68% of countries are increasing their external dependence of ecological products. Even if the intensity of ecological resource exploitation reaches the maximum sustainable utilization level, 60% (113) of countries are expected to need imports for meeting their ecological product demands in 2050. Moreover, even considering the agricultural technological upgrade and the consumption transformation, more than 50% (94) of countries are still net importers of ecological products. Therefore, trade liberalization is still one of the important means to reduce resource security risks caused by trade instability. More notably, half of the countries in the world may sacrifice ecological sustainability to meet basic human well-being in the future under deglobalization.

Japonica/geng and indica/xian are two major rice (Oryza sativa) subspecies with multiple divergent traits, but how these traits are related and interact within each subspecies remains elusive. Brassinosteroids (BRs) are a class of steroid phytohormones that modulate many important agronomic traits in rice. Here, using different physiological assays, we revealed that japonica rice exhibits an overall lower BR sensitivity than indica. Extensive screening of BR signaling genes led to the identification of a set of genes distributed throughout the primary BR signaling pathway with divergent polymorphisms. Among these, we demonstrate that the C38/T variant in BR Signaling Kinase2 (OsBSK2), causing the amino acid change P13L, plays a central role in mediating differential BR signaling in japonica and indica rice. OsBSK2L13 in indica plays a greater role in BR signaling than OsBSK2P13 in japonica by affecting the auto-binding and protein accumulation of OsBSK2. Finally, we determined that OsBSK2 is involved in a number of divergent traits in japonica relative to indica rice, including grain shape, tiller number, cold adaptation, and nitrogen-use efficiency. Our study suggests that the natural variation in OsBSK2 plays a key role in the divergence of BR signaling, which underlies multiple divergent traits between japonica and indica.

Endowing a cholesteric liquid crystal elastomer (CLCE) exhibiting a helicoidal nanostructure with dynamically tailorable functionalities is of paramount significance for its emerging applications in diverse fields such as adaptive optics and soft robotics. Here, a mechanochromic, shape-programmable and self-healable CLCE is judiciously designed and synthesized through integrating dynamic covalent boronic ester bonds into the main-chain CLCE polymer network. The circularly polarized reflection of CLCEs can be reversibly and dynamically tuned across the entire visible spectrum by mechanical stretching. Thanks to the introduction of dynamic boronic ester bonds, the CLCEs were found to show robust reprogrammable and self-healing capabilities. The research disclosed herein can provide new insights into the development of 4D (color and 3D shape) programmable photonic actuators towards bioinspired camouflage, adaptive optical systems, and next-generation intelligent machines.

Developing bioinspired camouflage materials that can adaptively change color in the visible and infrared (IR) regions is an intriguing but challenging task. Herein, we report an emerging strategy for fabricating dynamic visible and IR camouflage materials by the controlled in situ growth of novel photopolymerizable blue phase liquid crystals with cubic nanoarchitectures onto highly aligned MXene nanostructured thin films. The resulting MXene-integrated 3D soft photonic crystals exhibit vivid structural colors and reversible switching between a bright colored state and a dark black state under a low DC electric field. As an illustration, proof-of-concept pixelated devices that allow for pixel-controllable electrochromism are demonstrated. Furthermore, a free-standing electrochromic flexible film of such 3D soft photonic crystals is fabricated, where visible electrochromism and thermal camouflage are enabled by leveraging the superior electrothermal conversion and low mid-IR emissivity of MXene nanomaterials.

Directed assembly of nanocrystals from conventional templates suffers from poor control over the periodicity of the nanocrystal assembly, which is largely due to the fact that the template exists prior to the assembly and is not generally adaptive. Herein, small organic molecules (tris-amide triarylamines, TATA) are demonstrated as conceptual templates from self-assembly through noncovalent interactions. The as-formed supramolecular structures with terminated alkyl chains, resembling the structure of as-synthesized nanocrystals capped with alkyl chains, are able to interact with nanocrystals through van der Waals attractive forces, thereby enabling directed assembly of nanocrystals into ordered superlattices. Specifically, it is found that, as determined by the substituted alkyl chains of TATA, either H or J-aggregates of TATA can be achieved, which eventually produce several distinct supramolecular structures, from rods to spindles, to rings, and to spheres, serving as on-pathway intermediate that directs the assembly of nanocrystals into diverse nanocrystal superlattices. The approach described can be applicable to produce ordered nanocrystal assemblies of a wide range of nanocrystals, independent of size and shape and without ligand exchange process. Strikingly, a helical TATA stacking can direct assembly of binary nanocrystal mixtures into NaZn13 binary superhelix.

OBJECTIVES: To develop a predictive model and scoring system to enhance the diagnostic efficiency for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). METHODS: From January 19 to February 6, 2020, 88 confirmed COVID-19 patients presenting with pneumonia and 80 non-COVID-19 patients suffering from pneumonia of other origins were retrospectively enrolled. Clinical data and laboratory results were collected. CT features and scores were evaluated at the segmental level according to the lesions' position, attenuation, and form. Scores were calculated based on the size of the pneumonia lesion, which graded at the range of 1 to 4. Air bronchogram, tree-in-bud sign, crazy-paving pattern, subpleural curvilinear line, bronchiectasis, air space, pleural effusion, and mediastinal and/or hilar lymphadenopathy were also evaluated. RESULTS: Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that history of exposure (ß = 3.095, odds ratio (OR) = 22.088), leukocyte count (ß = - 1.495, OR = 0.224), number of segments with peripheral lesions (ß = 1.604, OR = 1.604), and crazy-paving pattern (ß = 2.836, OR = 2.836) were used for establishing the predictive model to identify COVID-19-positive patients (p < 0.05). In this model, values of area under curve (AUC) in the training and testing groups were 0.910 and 0.914, respectively (p < 0.001). A predicted score for COVID-19 (PSC-19) was calculated based on the predictive model by the following formula: PSC-19 = 2 × history of exposure (0-1 point) - 1 × leukocyte count (0-2 points) + 1 × peripheral lesions (0-1 point) + 2 × crazy-paving pattern (0-1 point), with an optimal cutoff point of 1 (sensitivity, 88.5%; specificity, 91.7%). CONCLUSIONS: Our predictive model and PSC-19 can be applied for identification of COVID-19-positive cases, assisting physicians and radiologists until receiving the results of reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) tests. KEY POINTS: • Prediction of RT-PCR positivity is crucial for fast diagnosis of patients suspected of having coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). • Typical CT manifestations are advantageous for diagnosing COVID-19 and differentiation of COVID-19 from other types of pneumonia. • A predictive model and scoring system combining both clinical and CT features were herein developed to enable high diagnostic efficiency for COVID-19.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE. Because CT plays an important role in diagnosis, isolation, treatment, and effective evaluation of coronavirus disease (COVID-19), infection prevention and control management of CT examination rooms is important. CONCLUSION. We describe modifications to the CT examination process, strict disinfection of examination rooms, arrangement of waiting areas, and efforts to increase radiographers' awareness of personal protection made at our institution during the COVID-19 outbreak. In addition, we discuss the potential of using artificial intelligence in imaging patients with contagious diseases.

Cumulus cells secreting steroid hormones have important functions in oocyte development. Several members of the short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase (SDR) family are critical to the biosynthesis of steroid hormones. NADPH-dependent retinol dehydrogenase/reductase ( NRDR), a member of the SDR superfamily, is overexpressed in pig breeds that also show high levels of androstenone. However, the potential functions and regulatory mechanisms of NRDR in pig ovaries have not been reported to date. The present study demonstrated that NRDR is highly expressed in pig ovaries and is specifically located in cumulus granulosa cells. Functional studies showed that NRDR inhibition increased estradiol synthesis. Both pregnant mare serum gonadotropin and human chorionic gonadotropin downregulated the expression of NRDR in pig cumulus granulosa cells. When the relationship between reproductive traits and single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the NRDR gene was examined, we found that two SNPs affected reproductive traits. SNP rs701332503 was significantly associated with a decrease in the total number of piglets born during multiparity, and rs326982309 was significantly associated with an increase in the average birth weight during primiparity. Thus, NRDR has an important role in steroid hormone biosynthesis in cumulus granulosa cells, and NRDR SNPs are associated with changes in porcine reproduction traits.

Orthostatic hypotension is most common in elderly people, and its prevalence increases with age. Attenuation of the vestibulo-sympathetic reflex (VSR) is commonly associated with orthostatic hypotension. In this study, we investigated the role of glutamate on the vestibulo-solitary projection of the VSR pathway to clarify the pathophysiology of orthostatic hypotension. Blood pressure and expression of both pERK and c-Fos protein were evaluated in the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS) after microinjection of glutamate into the medial vestibular nucleus (MVN) in conscious rats with sodium nitroprusside (SNP)-induced hypotension that received baroreceptor unloading via sinoaortic denervation (SAD). SNP-induced hypotension increased the expression of both pERK and c-Fos protein in the NTS, which was abolished by pretreatment with glutamate receptor antagonists (MK801 or CNQX) in the MVN. Microinjection of glutamate receptor agonists (NMDA or AMPA) into the MVN increased the expression of both pERK and c-Fos protein in the NTS without causing changes in blood pressure. These results indicate that both NMDA and AMPA receptors play a significant role in the vestibulo-solitary projection of the VSR pathway for maintaining blood pressure, and that glutamatergic transmission in this projection might play a key role in the pathophysiology of orthostatic hypotension.

Input signals originating from baroreceptors and vestibular receptors are integrated in the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) to maintain blood pressure during postural movement. The contribution of baroreceptors and vestibular receptors in the maintenance of blood pressure following hypotension were quantitatively analyzed by measuring phosphorylated extracellular regulated protein kinase (pERK) expression and glutamate release in the RVLM. The expression of pERK and glutamate release in the RVLM were measured in conscious rats that had undergone bilateral labyrinthectomy (BL) and/or sinoaortic denervation (SAD) following hypotension induced by a sodium nitroprusside (SNP) infusion. The expression of pERK was significantly increased in the RVLM in the control group following SNP infusion, and expression peaked 10 min after SNP infusion. The number of pERK positive neurons increased following SNP infusion in BL, SAD, and BL+SAD groups, although the increase was smaller than seen in the control group. The SAD group showed a relatively higher reduction in pERK expression when compared with the BL group. The level of glutamate release was significantly increased in the RVLM in control, BL, SAD groups following SNP infusion, and this peaked 10 min after SNP infusion. The SAD group showed a relatively higher reduction in glutamate release when compared with the BL group. These results suggest that the baroreceptors are more powerful in pERK expression and glutamate release in the RVLM following hypotension than the vestibular receptors, but the vestibular receptors still have an important role in the RVLM.
