RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the touch perception threshold of the alveolar mucosa and quality of life of edentulous patients before (T0) and 30 days after (T1) the insertion of new complete dentures. BACKGROUND: Touch perception is important so that edentulous patients can detect the position of complete dentures in their mouth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 32 complete denture wearers with good oral and systemic health and no temporomandibular disorders for at least 5 years. At each time point (T0 and T1), two tests were performed (touch perception threshold and quality-of-life scale). The touch perception threshold (Von Frey or Semmes-Weinstein test) was assessed using nylon monofilaments on the regions of the alveolar mucosa of the maxilla and mandible. The Oral Health Impact Profile for edentulous individuals (OHIP-EDENT) was administered to evaluate oral health-related quality of life. RESULTS: In the maxilla and mandible, the touch perception thresholds for all regions of the alveolar mucosa were significantly lower at T1 than at T0. The OHIP-EDENT mean scores showed that the overall quality of life was significantly better at T1 (3.6) than at T0 (4.7), and a significant improvement in quality of life was observed in all domains of the OHIP-EDENT at T1. For touch perception threshold, effect sizes ranged from 0.4 to 0.8; and for quality of life, effect sizes ranged from 0.4 to 1.0. CONCLUSIONS: New complete dentures reduced the touch perception threshold of the alveolar mucosa of both edentulous arches and improved individuals' quality of life.

PURPOSE: To assess the reproducibility of four different centric relation (CR) recording techniques, and time spent performing each technique in edentulous individuals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four techniques were assessed: extraoral gothic arch (EOGA) tracing, intraoral gothic arch (IOGA) tracing, deglutition (D), and frontal manipulation with tongue elevation (FMTE). Twelve subjects participated in the study; four technique records were performed on each volunteer by the same operator. Each record was repeated three times, in the same period of the day, with a 30 min interval between each technique. The reproducibility of each technique was assessed by the tri-dimensional displacement of the position of the condylar housing (mandible condyle) to the wall of the condylar guide (glenoid cavity) in the semi-adjustable articulator (anteroposterior, mediolateral, and superior-inferior). The time spent on each technique was timed in seconds (from the beginning of each technique until the wax occlusion fixation). The analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Tukey test were performed for anteroposterior displacement (two-way) and for time spent on CT recording techniques (one-way) (α < 0.05). Regarding mediolateral and superior-inferior displacements, the nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis was performed for the comparison between recording methods, whereas the Mann-Whitney test was performed for the comparison between sides (α < 0.05). RESULTS: The factor recording technique interfered with the anteroposterior displacement (ANOVA: α < 0.001; F = 11.396). The technique D (right side: 3.78 ± 0.69 mm; left side: 3.45 ± 0.74 mm) showed a statistically significant difference compared to the other techniques (EOGA: right side: 3.00 ± 0.00 mm; left side: 3.00 ± 0.00 mm; FMTE: right side: 2.81 ± 0.52 mm; left side: 2.82 ± 0.79 mm; IOGA: right side: 2.90 ± 0.65 mm; left side: 3.12 ± 0.44 mm). The time spent on the recording technique influenced the results (ANOVA: α < 0.001; F = 21.118). The IOGA (340.40 ± 163.41 s) and EOGA (285.93 ± 133.84 s) required more time compared to the D (86.00 ± 34.33 s) and FMTE (101.33 ± 36.72 s) techniques. CONCLUSION: Graphic recordings showed better reproducibility and accuracy of the position of the centric relation.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of oral rehabilitation with complete dentures on bite force and electromyography of the suprahyoid and sternocleidomastoid muscles, and their correlation with occlusal vertical dimension (OVD). The research questions were "What are the effects of rehabilitation with complete dentures on bite force and electromyography of suprahyoid and sternocleidomastoid muscles, and how are they correlated with OVD?" MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients who are wearers of unsatisfactory removable complete dentures were attended in three sessions (T0, T1, and T2). At T0, while the patients still wore the old dentures, they were submitted to bite force and surface electromyographic exams of the suprahyoid and sternocleidomastoid muscles. These exams were repeated, and the OVD was measured while the patients wore their old and new prostheses, 30 days after insertion of the new prosthesis (T1). The exams were repeated 100 days after the insertion of the new prosthesis (T2). The data were submitted to the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Pearson correlation and linear regression, all with 5% significance. RESULTS: Fifteen patients participated in the study. No statistically significant difference was observed for bite force or electromyography in T0, T1, or T2. However, the correlation and regression tests showed important interactions between the OVD and maximum voluntary occlusal bite force, as well as the OVD and electromyography during deglutition for the suprahyoid muscles. CONCLUSION: Rehabilitation did not impact bite force nor the activity of the assessed muscles (electromyography). On the other hand, OVD was shown to be an important factor for bite force, and deglutition of water after rehabilitation. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This study shows what are the influences of rehabilitation on oral functions and reinforces the importance of corrected reestablishment of OVD because it has been found to be an important factor for bite force and electromyography during deglutition.

The objective of this study was to compare techniques of different methods of obtaining centric relation to verify which technique generates the greatest reproducibility of the centric relation. The PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, SciELO, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were searched for articles published up to May 15, 2018. The search terms were combinations of "dental centric relation" with each of the following terms (individually): "reproducibility of findings"; "jaw relation record"; "chin point"; "gothic arch"; "bimanual manipulation"; "swallowing"; and "jig." The inclusion criteria included clinical studies in English that had to compare at least 2 techniques representing different methods for obtaining centric relation (based on the reproducibility of the centric relation) in individuals without temporomandibular dysfunction; and studies performed in individuals with complete or nearly complete dentition or complete edentulism. Methods (techniques) included in this study were guided methods (chin point guidance and bimanual manipulation); graphic methods (intraoral and extraoral gothic arch tracing); and physiologic methods (swallowing and tongue retrusion along the palate). A total of 1638 articles were identified. After the inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied, 7 articles were included in this review. None of the reviewed studies evaluated edentulous individuals. Two articles compared physiologic methods with guided methods; one concluded that the swallowing technique generates greater variability than guided methods, and the other concluded that there was no difference between the swallowing technique and chin point guidance. Of 5 articles comparing intraoral gothic arch tracing with guided methods, 2 showed similar results between different methods, 2 showed superior results for gothic arch tracing, and 1 showed superior results for the guided methods. Based on the guided methods and swallowing technique, it is not possible to conclude which technique can generate the greatest reproducibility of the centric relation. It is possible to suggest that in most cases intraoral gothic arch tracing is superior or equivalent when compared to guided methods.

The aim of this study was to compare PETG/TPU (polyethylene terephthalate glycol/thermoplastic polyurethane) with PETG (polyethylene terephthalate glycol), based on color stability and microhardness. Sixty circular specimens (10 mm in diameter × 3 mm thick) were fabricated (30 PETG/TPU and 30 PETG). The specimens in both groups were submitted to 2000 thermal cycles in alternating baths of 60 seconds at 5°C ± 1°C and 55°C ± 1°C. The specimens were then divided into subgroups (n = 10) that were disinfected 15 minutes per day for 60 days in 1 of 3 solutions: liquid soap, 2% chlorhexidine, or Listerine. Color change (∆E*) and Knoop microhardness tests were performed at baseline (T0), after thermocycling (T1), and after disinfection (T2). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey test were used (P < 0.05). ANOVA showed that there was no statistically significant difference in color change between the 2 materials after thermocycling (∆E*1) or after disinfection (∆E*2), regardless of the disinfectant. Intragroup comparisons (Listerine, liquid soap, and 2% chlorhexidine) of the 3 PETG/TPU groups or 3 PETG groups after disinfection revealed no statistically significant difference for microhardness. Comparison of PETG/TPU with PETG based on the overall mean microhardness showed that the PETG/TPU had a significantly greater mean surface hardness value (P < 0.05). The Tukey test revealed statistically significant increases in microhardness at T1 and T2 for PETG/TPU and PETG so that T0 < T1 < T2 (P < 0.05). Both thermoplastic materials demonstrated an increase in hardness after thermocycling and after disinfection, and both showed similar color changes regardless of the disinfection method. Based on the color evaluation, the liquid soap proved to be the best option for disinfection of PETG/TPU and PETG, because the color change (∆E* value) was clinically acceptable for both materials.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Exposure of silicone prostheses to environmental factors can alter their properties, affecting longevity. However, whether nonthermal plasma (NTP) can prevent these alterations is unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the surface roughness (Ra), sorption, solubility, and color stability (ΔE00) of the MDX4-4210 and A-120 silicones, with and without NTP treatment in accordance with an independent analysis of the use of 2 pigmentations. MATERIAL AND METHODS: One hundred sixty specimens were fabricated and distributed into 16 groups (n=10) as per the silicone, pigmentation, and NTP coating. The NTP was applied, and the Ra, sorption, solubility, and ΔE00 were evaluated before and after accelerated aging. ANOVA was used, and the HSD Tukey test was applied (α=.05). RESULTS: NTP generated an increase in roughness after aging, regardless of pigmentation or silicone. A-120 silicone without NTP showed a reduction in roughness after aging, regardless of pigmentation. For sorption and solubility, the bronze pigmentation (for A-120 and MDX4-4210) presented the smallest results after NTP treatment. For MDX4-4210 with pink pigmentation and NTP, sorption decreased and solubility increased. For A-120 with pink pigmentation and NTP, sorption and solubility increased. Sorption was reduced in all situations, except for A-120 with pink pigmentation, which increased. Regardless of the silicone used, solubility was reduced after NTP for bronze pigmentation. For A-120 and MDX4-4210 with pink pigmentation and NTP, the solubility increased. For both pigmentations, the NTP treatment promoted lower color alteration only for the A-120 silicone after accelerated aging (within the acceptability threshold). CONCLUSIONS: The NTP protocol of this study, which was applied to facial silicones, generated inconsistent results between the evaluated properties. Therefore, the NTP protocol used does not seem to be ideal for the treatment of silicone surfaces after aging.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the flexural strength and Knoop microhardness of the polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) used in dental prostheses after receiving therapeutic radiation doses of 50 and 70 Gy. Thirty-six acrylic resin plates measuring 65.0 × 10.0 × 3.3 mm were fabricated and polymerized using a microwave. The specimens were randomly divided into 3 groups (n = 12): group 1, which received no radiation; group 2, which received 1 fractioned dose of 2 Gy per day, 5 days per week, for 5 weeks, totaling 50 Gy; and group 3, which received 1 fractioned dose of 2 Gy per day, 5 days per week, for 7 weeks, totaling 70 Gy. All specimens remained in ballistic gel at a temperature of 37°C throughout the study. Afterward, the specimens underwent flexural strength and Knoop microhardness tests. All data were analyzed using analysis of variance and Tukey post hoc test (P < 0.05). For flexural strength, there was a statistically significant difference between groups 1 and 2 (P = 0.012) and between groups 1 and 3 (P = 0.048). For Knoop microhardness, there was a difference between groups 1 and 2 (P = 0.001) and between groups 1 and 3 (P = 0.006). For both flexural strength and microhardness, groups 2 and 3 showed greater values than group 1. Therapeutic radiation doses of 50 and 70 Gy increased the flexural strength and Knoop microhardness of PMMA used in dental prostheses.

This study aimed to evaluate the fracture resistance of the bond between an artificial acrylic resin tooth and its acrylic resin denture base after radiotherapy with maximum therapeutic doses of 40 and 70 Gy. Sixty wax blocks were fabricated with heights of 4.0 cm and bases with dimensions of 1.0 cm2 and 1.8 cm2. A posterior acrylic resin tooth was placed on each wax block on the base with the smallest area. Thirty of the blocks were thermopolymerized using the conventional technique and 30 using the microwave technique, and the blocks were divided into 6 groups (n = 10): 1 (control, conventional) and 2 (control, microwave) did not receive radiation; 3 (conventional) and 4 (microwave) received a total dose of 40-Gy radiation; and 5 (conventional) and 6 (microwave) received a total dose of 70 Gy. The groups of 40 and 70 Gy received fractional doses of 2 Gy per day, 5 days per week, until their respective total dose was completed. During the study, all specimens were stored in ballistic gel at a temperature of 37ºC. After the radiotherapy treatments, the bonds between teeth and bases in all groups were submitted to a fracture resistance test. Analysis of variance and Tukey test (P < 0.05) verified no statistically significant differences between groups 1 and 3 (P = 0.727), 2 and 4 (P = 0.537), or 4 and 6 (P = 0.727). However, there were statistically significant differences between groups 3 and 5 (P < 0.001), 5 and 1 (P = 0.006), and 6 and 2 (P = 0.034). Therefore, for both polymerization techniques, the maximum radiation dose of 70 Gy weakened the bond between the acrylic resin tooth and its acrylic resin base.

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the influence of depth (3.0 vs 5.0 mm) of mesio-occlusodistal (MOD) cavity preparation and mechanical cycling on fracture resistance of maxillary premolars restored with resin-based composite (RBC). Seventy premolars were randomly divided into 7 groups (n = 10): NP, no cavity preparation (control); MOD3, 3.0-mm-deep MOD preparation, not restored; MOD3R, 3.0-mm-deep MOD preparation restored with RBC; MOD5, 5.0-mm-deep MOD preparation, not restored; MOD5R, 5.0-mm-deep MOD preparation restored with RBC; MOD3RC, 3.0-mm-deep MOD preparation restored with RBC and subjected to mechanical cycling; and MOD5RC, 5.0-mm-deep MOD preparation restored with RBC and subjected to mechanical cycling under the same conditions as MOD3RC. All specimens were tested using a universal testing machine, resulting in the following mean (SD) values: NP, 224.65 (35.66) kgf; MOD3, 58.92 (15.48) kgf; MOD3R, 95.58 (13.88) kgf; MOD5, 68.06 (10.12) kgf; MOD5R, 98.49 (13.16) kgf; MOD3RC, 83.68 (14.39) kgf; and MOD5RC, 54.25 (11.56) kgf. Analysis of variance and Tukey test showed no statistically significant difference among MOD3, MOD5, and MOD5RC; between MOD5 and MOD3RC; or among MOD3R, MOD5R, and MOD3RC (P > 0.05). MOD3RC had significantly greater fracture resistance than MOD5RC (P < 0.05). NP had the highest fracture resistance of all groups (P < 0.05). The results showed that the depth of the cavity preparation only influenced fracture resistance after mechanical cycling of the specimens.

OBJECTIVES: To determine, through clinical studies, whether there is a correlation between the Periotest value (PTV) and the implant stability quotient (ISQ). CONTENT: Methods to evaluate the stability of dental implants. SUMMARY: A search was performed in the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases for articles on the proposed subject up to January 29, 2023, using search terms that combined "resonance frequency analysis" and "Periotest" with "correlation" or "relationship"; and combinations of "implant stability quotient" and "Periotest" with "correlation" or "relationship." The inclusion criteria were clinical studies in English involving human subjects who received dental implants and evaluating the correlation between PTV and ISQ. A total of 46 articles were screened, of which 10 were selected for full-text analysis, and eight articles were included in this review. Based on three articles, 75 % of the results of this systematic review showed a negative correlation between PTV and ISQ, regardless of the type of stability assessed. Based on the remaining five articles, 100 % (regardless of the patient's gender) and 66.66 % of the results showed a negative correlation for primary and secondary stability, respectively. There is a negative correlation between PTV and ISQ for both primary and secondary dental implant stability. OUTLOOK: This review can serve as a reference for the development of methodologies for future clinical studies on this topic.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the Morse taper (MT) + titanium base (Ti-Base) abutment with the external hexagon (EH) + Ti-Base abutment by using the strain gauge method in the mesial, distal, and apical-buccal areas around these types of implants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study investigated two groups, MT and EH, each comprising five polyurethane samples with a dental implant in the area of artificial tooth 15 (3.75 × 11.5 mm) of a dental manikin. The strain gauges were glued to the mesial, distal, and apical-buccal polyurethane areas of all samples in relation to the implant. Ti-Base nonangled abutments measuring 5.0 × 4.7 × 1.0 mm (DSP, Brazil) were installed on the implants in each group. Ten identical zirconia crowns were constructed by scanning and milling and were subsequently cemented onto the Ti-base abutments with calcium hydroxide cement. Then, an axial load of 100 N was applied to the occlusal region of the zirconia crowns, and strain gauge measurements were taken. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: Strain gauge data were assessed by a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with "implant connection" and "strain gauge position" factors, followed by the Bonferroni test (p < 0.05). RESULTS: The MT group exhibited a statistically significant reduction in microstrain in the mesial and apical strain gauge measurements compared to the EH group. CONCLUSION: The MT group exhibited less microstrain in the mesial and apical areas of the polyurethane samples near the implant. Consequently, the MT connection was considered more biomechanically advantageous.

RESUMEN

The aim of this review was to determine the survival rate of implants loaded immediately with a Branemark protocol prosthesis. An electronic search was performed in the PubMed/MEDLINE database from 2006 to February 2024, using a combination of Medical Subject Headings descriptors: "completely edentulous" and "immediate loading." Human clinical articles in English that evaluated the survival rate of implants loaded immediately with a Branemark protocol prosthesis after placement in the bone were included. A total of 546 articles were identified, of which 15 were included in this study. The 15 articles included in the literature showed a high implant survival rate (more than 93%) after immediate loading.

OBJECTIVES: Thus, the aim of this study was to compare the effect of using two preoperative mouthwashes (0.12% chlorhexidine and 0.2% tea tree oil) on the number of colonies of oral microorganisms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty participants who needed to be rehabilitated with dental implants were included in this study. They were randomly divided into two groups (chlorhexidine group and tea tree group; n = 20, each). For each group, saliva samples were collected at four different times: T0 (initially)-before using the mouthwash, T1-after 1 minute of using the mouthwash, T10-after 10 minutes of using the mouthwash, and T60-after 60 minutes of using the mouthwash. At T0 and T1, saliva samples were collected before implant placement surgery, and at T10 and T60, saliva samples were collected during surgery. In each group, one saliva sample was collected at each evaluated time point for each patient, totaling 4 saliva collections per patient. MSB agar (Mitis-Salivarius-Bacitracin) and BHI agar (Brain Heart Infusion) culture media were used in each group. Microbial colony counts were performed using a magnifying glass and recorded in CFU (colony forming units)/mL. Statistical analyses were performed using the Friedman, Mann-Whitney U and Wilcoxon tests (p < 0.05). RESULTS: Based on MSB agar culture medium, at T0, the number of Streptococcus mutans colonies in the chlorhexidine group was significantly higher compared with the tea tree group (p <0.05; MSB agar). The chlorhexidine group showed significantly lower CFU/mL values for Streptococcus mutans at T1, T10, and T60 compared with the tea tree group (p <0.05; MSB agar). Based on BHI agar culture medium, at T0, the chlorhexidine group showed a significantly lower value of CFU/mL compared with the tea tree group (p < 0.05; BHI agar). At T1, T10, and T60, the chlorhexidine group showed significantly lower CFU/mL values compared with the tea tree group (p <0.05; BHI agar). CONCLUSION: Chlorhexidine is more indicated as a preoperative mouthwash than tea tree oil, due to its significantly more effective antimicrobial action.

The objective of this review is to expose the main genetic changes and genetic polymorphisms that may or may not be associated with greater susceptibility to reduced survival of dental implants and, consequently, to their loss. Case-control studies that fully portrayed the specific types of genetic polymorphisms that may be associated with dental implant failure were included by searching in the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases from 2010 to 2023. The following descriptors and their combinations in English were used to search for articles: "dental implants," "bone genes," "genetics," "polymorphism genetics," "genetic risk factor," and "interleukin." The initial search resulted in 107 results (PubMed n = 47, Scopus n = 14, and Web of Science n = 46). After a manual search, reviewing each article's title and abstract, and excluding duplicates, systematic reviews, and literature reviews, 30 articles were selected. After reading these 30 articles in full, 18 studies that did not describe the specific genetic polymorphism in relation to dental implant survival were excluded. Therefore, 12 articles were included in this review. The genetic polymorphisms of interleukin (IL)-1A, IL-1B, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, IL-1 receptor antagonist, tumor necrosis factor-α, receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa B legend, and cluster of differentiation 14 were analyzed in the included studies. In seven of the studies, a statistically significant correlation between genetic polymorphisms and dental implant failure was observed. Of the polymorphisms studied, IL-1A (-899), IL-1B (+3954), and IL-4 (+33) showed a greater association with dental implant loss.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study is to evaluate the effect of extrinsic pigmentation on the dimensional stability, hardness, detail reproduction, and color of a silicone after thermocycling. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty samples of MDX4-4210 silicone (Dow Corning Corporation Medical Products) with intrinsic pink pigment (H-109-P, Factor II) and intrinsic opacifier (TiO) were fabricated. Two groups were created: Group 1-only intrinsic pigmentation (H-109P, Factor II + TiO) (Control); and Group 2-intrinsic (H-109P, Factor II + TiO) and extrinsic (Tan FE - 215, Factor II) pigmentation. The following tests were performed for each group: dimensional stability, Shore A hardness, detail reproduction, and color. Readings for the tests were taken before and after thermocycling (2,000 cycles). For dimensional stability and hardness, two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used. One-way ANOVA was used for the color test. In case of significant statistical difference, the Tukey test was applied (p <0.05). All samples achieved the same detail reproduction score, therefore, no statistical evaluation was performed. RESULTS: For the dimensional stability test, comparing the initial time with the final time, there was a significant contraction in both groups after thermocycling. For the hardness test, comparing the time points, only group 1 showed a significant reduction in hardness after thermocycling. Groups 1 and 2 scored 2 for the detail reproduction test, before and after thermocycling. Comparing group 1 with group 2, there was no significant difference for color change. CONCLUSION: Based on the tests performed, extrinsic pigmentation did not show a negative effect on silicone, and therefore it can be indicated. The results of the dimensional, hardness, detail reproduction and color evaluations of the MDX4-4210 silicone were clinically acceptable in all cases in the groups with and without extrinsic pigmentation.

The objective of this systematic review was to compare centric relation (CR) techniques that belong to the same method of obtaining CR (guided, graphical, or physiological method), to verify which CR technique within each method of obtaining CR generates the greatest reproducibility of the condylar positions (or mandibular position) in CR. The PubMed, Cochrane Library, SciELO, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were searched for articles published up to May 5, 2021. The search terms were combinations of "dental centric relation" (MeSH), with each of the following terms (individually): "reproducibility of findings" (MeSH); "jaw relation record" (MeSH); "chin point"; "gothic arch"; "bimanual manipulation"; "swallowing" (MeSH); and "jig." Inclusion criteria: clinical studies in English; individuals without temporomandibular dysfunction and with complete or almost complete dentition or complete edentulous; and comparison between CR techniques belonging to the same method of obtaining CR based on the reproducibility of condylar positions in CR. For each method of obtaining the CR, the following CR techniques were considered: guided method (chin point guidance and bimanual manipulation); graphic method (intraoral and extraoral gothic arch tracing); and physiologic method (swallowing and tongue retrusion along the palate). A total of 1692 articles were screened. After the inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied, six articles were included in this review. None of the included studies evaluated edentulous individuals. All included articles compared CR techniques of the guided method. Three articles concluded that the bimanual technique showed greater reproducibility of the condylar positions in CR than the chin point guidance technique, two articles showed equivalence between these techniques, and 1 article concluded that the chin point guidance technique showed greater reproducibility of the condylar positions in CR than the bimanual technique. Thus, in this systematic review, the bimanual technique was often superior (generated greater reproducibility of the CR) or at least equivalent to the chin point guidance technique. Therefore, for individuals with complete dentition and without temporomandibular disorders, the bimanual technique is more recommended.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to verify the influence of three pigment incorporation methods (conventional, mechanical, and industrial) on the sorption and solubility of the MDX4-4210 and A-2186 silicones. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The groups formed were based on the silicones used (A-2186 and MDX4-4210), intrinsic pigments (pink, bronze, and black), and pigment incorporation methods (conventional, mechanical, and industrial). The dimensions of all samples were 45-mm diameter (ø) × 1-mm thickness. Readings were taken initially and after 1,008 hours of aging. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: Three-way analysis of variance and the Tukey's test were performed (α = 0.05). RESULTS: For sorption and solubility, there was no difference between the incorporation methods for the A-2186 silicone, regardless of the pigment used (p > 0.05). For pink MDX4-4210, the industrial and mechanical methods showed higher values of sorption compared with the conventional method (p < 0.05). For bronze MDX4-4210, the industrial method showed a higher sorption value compared with the conventional and mechanical methods (p < 0.05). For black MDX4-4210, there was no difference between incorporation methods based on sorption (p > 0.05). For pink MDX4-4210, the mechanical method showed a higher solubility value compared with the industrial and conventional methods (p < 0.05). For black MDX4-4210 and bronze MDX4-4210, there was no statistically significant difference between incorporation methods based on solubility (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Based on sorption and solubility, for the A-2186 silicone, the conventional, mechanical, and industrial methods of pigment incorporation were equivalent. For the MDX4-4210 silicone, its results of sorption and solubility were varied, and further studies are recommended.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to verify whether removable dentures of patients admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) are niches of microorganisms that can cause pathologies (Staphylococcus aureus, Candida spp., and enterobacteria). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifteen patients who were denture wearers (removable partial denture and complete denture) were included in this study. Patients must wear their dentures daily, and these dentures must have acrylic parts. Microbial biofilm was collected from the acrylic part of one denture of each patient. Then, the biofilm was seeded on different culture media: Sabouraud agar, blood agar, MacConkey agar, and mannitol salt agar. In this study, biochemical evaluations of microorganisms were performed. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: The percentage of dentures with the microorganism identified by each culture medium was calculated. RESULTS: In total, 100% of the dentures were positive for Staphylococcus spp. (blood agar) and Candida spp. (Sabouraud agar); 33.3% of the dentures were positive for S. aureus (Mannitol salt agar); and 13.3% of the dentures were positive for Shigella spp. (MacConkey agar). CONCLUSION: Removable dentures of patients (removable partial dentures and complete dentures) admitted to an ICU are niches of microorganisms that can cause pathologies.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the influence of new complete dentures (CDs) and new removable partial dentures (RPDs) on oral health-related quality of life, dry mouth sensation, and anxiety level of their wearers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In total, 20 complete edentulous patients (in both arches) that needed to be rehabilitated with new CDs, and 20 partial edentulous patients (in both arches) that needed to be rehabilitated with new RPDs, were included in this study. Each patient must wear the same pair of CDs or RPDs for more than 5 years. Oral health-related quality of life, dry mouth sensation, and level of anxiety were assessed by using the following questionnaires: Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI), VAS (Visual Analog Scale) Xerostomia Questionnaire, and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). These questionnaires were applied before oral rehabilitation (initially initial time point) and 3 months after insertion of new dentures (end time point). STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: For the results of STAI-State, STAI-Trait, and GOHAI, the Wilcoxon test was applied to compare the time points. For the results of the VAS xerostomia questionnaire, two-way repeated measures ANOVA (analysis of variance) was applied, followed by the Tukey test. The p-values lower than 0.05 were considered statistically significant. RESULTS: /CONCLUSION: For both groups, it was observed that 3 months after the insertion of new removable dentures: (1) there was an increase in oral health-related quality of life; (2) there was a reduction in anxiety (trait anxiety and state anxiety); and (3) there was a perception of greater salivation.

Background: To verify if there is a correlation of excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) with bruxism, depression, anxiety, stress, and sex in odontology students. Material and Methods: Four hundred dental students were selected. Students included in the study were those that were healthy, over 18 years old, and with similar weekly academic activities. Students excluded were those with temporomandibular disfunction, a high possibility of possessing obstructive sleep apnea and illnesses that cause EDS; along with smokers, users of illicit drugs, users of psychiatric medication, and those that abuse the consumption of alcohol. After the application of these criteria, 128 students were included in this study. EDS, bruxism, depression, anxiety, and stress were evaluated by the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, the Pintado et al. questionnaire, Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Anxiety Inventory, and the LIPP Adult Stress Symptom Inventory. Afterwards, the Spearman test (p< 0.05) was applied. Results: A high probability of EDS was present in 33.6% of the students. There was a positive correlation of EDS with females (Rank Correlation= 0.209; p= 0.018) and depression (Rank Correlation= 0.174; p= 0.049); between females and stress (Rank Correlation= 0.199; p= 0.024), and between females and anxiety (Rank Correlation= 0.178; p= 0.045). There was a positive correlation of bruxism with anxiety (Rank Correlation= 0.255; p= 0.004) and stress (Rank Correlation= 0.201; p= 0.023). There was no correlation of EDS with bruxism (p= 0.354), stress (p= 0.277), or anxiety (p= 0.114). There was no correlation of bruxism with females (p= 0.082) or depression (p= 0.362). Conclusions: A high probability of EDS was present in 33.6% of dentistry students, and there was a positive correlation of EDS with females and depression.
