AIM: This study investigated the effectiveness of a drug-modified tissue conditioner in an animal model of denture stomatitis. METHODS AND RESULTS: Wistar rats wore a Candida albicans-contaminated palatal device for 4 days. Next, nystatin (Nys) or chlorhexidine (Chx) were added to a tissue conditioner in their raw or ß-cyclodextrin-complexed (ßCD) forms at their minimum inhibitory concentrations. As controls, one group was not subjected to any procedure (NC), one group used sterile devices, one group had denture stomatitis but was not treated (DS), and another had the devices relined with the tissue conditioner without the addition of any drug (Soft). After 4 days of treatment, treatment effectiveness was assessed visually, histologically, and through CFU count, and myeloperoxidase (MPO) and N-acetylglucosaminidase (NAG) assays. Rats from the Soft, Nys, Nys:ßCD, and Chx groups presented a significant decrease in the microbial load compared with the untreated group. Treatment groups showed lower MPO and NAG activity compared to the non-treated group. CONCLUSIONS: The addition of antifungals to a soft tissue conditioner can be a promising approach for denture stomatitis treatment.

OBJECTIVE: This study proposed to assess the effect of Cryptocarya moschata extract on single and mixed biofilms formed on denture base and reline acrylic resin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Single and mixed biofilms of Candida albicans and Streptococcus mutans were formed on the samples and treated with C. moschata extract; Nystatin solution at 100,000 IU/mL or Penicillin antibiotic solution at 100,000 IU/mL; or PBS solution. Antimicrobial activity was analyzed by counting colony-forming units, metabolism assay, assessment of protein components of the biofilm matrix, and of cell viability using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Data were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey's post-test (α = 0.05). RESULTS: Cryptocarya moschata extract reduced cell viability of C. albicans and S. mutans single and mixed biofilms formed on samples. For all types of biofilms in the C. moschata group, there was a log reduction of the biofilm, proven by the Alamar Blue assay. Analyzing the extracellular matrix protein components, groups treated with the extract exhibited a lower level of fluorescence compared to the PBS groups. Reduction in thickness biofilm and viable cells was perceptible in the C. moschata group when assessing through CLSM. CONCLUSION: Cryptocarya moschata extract reduced the single and mixed biofilms of C. albicans and S. mutans on acrylic resins.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of recombinant psoriasin as a novel treatment for oral candidiasis by eliminating Candida albicans growth on polymethyl methacrylate denture base. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Recombinant psoriasin protein was expressed and purified from E. coli, and Candida growth was monitored in vitro with varying concentrations of psoriasin. Subsequently, denture-base polymethyl methacrylate was immersed in psoriasin's solution or voriconazole, and fungal growth on the acrylic base and in the medium was examined by scanning electron microscopy and optical density, respectively. Cellular viability of HeLa and human gingival fibroblast cells treated with psoriasin was measured by methylene blue assay. RESULTS: The findings reveal an effective antifungal activity of psoriasin, completely inhibiting Candida albicans growth in RPMI at a protein concentration above 400 nM. Immersing the polymethyl methacrylate with 50 µM psoriasin completely eradicates fungal growth. Psoriasin has low cytotoxicity in HeLa cells at a concentration higher than 12 µM and no toxic effect on human gingival fibroblasts. CONCLUSIONS: This study marks psoriasin as an effective alternative to conventional antifungal treatments for denture stomatitis and a safe alternative to chemical antifungals in dental medicine and beyond.

BACKGROUND: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been recently proposed as a promising alternative therapy for Denture Stomatitis (DS). The present systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the current available evidence regarding the efficacy of PDT in the management of DS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and ProQuest were searched up to June 7, 2023. All relevant clinical trials were included. RevMan software was used for the statistical analyses. RESULTS: Elven randomized clinical trials (460 DS patients) were included. Eight studies assessed the efficacy of PDT vs. topical antifungal therapy, while three studies assessed the adjunctive use of PDT (PDT + antifungal therapy) vs. topical antifungal therapy alone. The results revealed comparable efficacy of PDT and conventional antifungal therapy on candida colonization at 15 days (MD: 0.95, 95% CI: -0.28, 2.19, p = 0.13) and at the end of follow-up (MD: -0.17, 95% CI: -1.33, 0.98, p = 0.77). The pooled two studies revealed relatively better efficacy of adjunctive use of PDT with antifungal therapy on candida colonization compared to antifungal therapy alone at 15 days (MD: -6.67, 95% CI: -15.15, 1.82, p = 0.12), and at the end of follow-up (MD: -7.14, 95% CI: -19.78, 5.50, p = 0.27). Additionally, the results revealed comparable efficacy of PDT and topical antifungal therapy on the clinical outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: PDT might be considered a viable option for DS either as an adjunct or as an alternative to the topical antifungal medications. Further studies with adequate sample sizes and standardized PDT parameters are warranted.

BACKGROUND: Chitosan is known to inhibit the growth of many bacteria and fungi. Tissue conditioners are commonly used to prevent bone destruction under dentures. However, over time, these materials can become a suitable substrate for microbial growth. One approach to improving dental materials is the use of nanoparticles. This study examined the antifungal properties of chitosan and green technique-synthesized silver nanoparticles in combination with tissue conditioners. METHODS: Tissue conditioner materials were mixed with chitosan and silver nanoparticles at concentrations of 0.097%, 0.19%, and 0.37%, along with 1.25 ppm Nystatin, and their antimicrobial properties against Candida albicans were investigated. The growth rate was measured after 24 h of incubation at 37 °C. Non-parametric tests, such as the Kruskal-Wallis H test and Mann-Whitney U test with Bonferroni correction, were used for data analysis after verifying that the groups did not have a normal distribution. RESULTS: Compared with the control and Nystatin groups, the Chitosan-silver groups showed a significant decrease in the number of CFUs of Candida albicans. CONCLUSIONS: The combination of chitosan and silver nanoparticles with tissue conditioner materials is a promising alternative for preventing and treating denture stomatitis. These findings suggest that using very small amounts of nanoparticles in dental materials could effectively prevent microbial growth, which could improve the longevity and efficacy of dental prosthetics and materials.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess Candida albicans attachment on conventionally fabricated (polymethylmethacrylate, PMMA), CAD-CAM milled, and 3D-printed acrylic resin bases pre- and post-simulated thermal aging, along with examining material surface changes after aging. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-six samples (10 mm × 10 mm × 2 mm) for each of four material groups (conventional heat-polymerized PMMA, CAD-CAM milled acrylic resin base, CAD-CAM 3D-printed methacrylate resin base, CAD-CAM 3D-printed urethane methacrylate resin base) were subjected to 0, 1, or 2 years of simulated thermal aging. Microscopic images were taken before and after aging, and C. albicans attachment was quantified using cell proliferation assay (XTT). Statistical analysis employed analysis of variance (α = 0.05). RESULTS: Two-way factorial analysis showed no significant differences based on acrylic resin type or thermal aging (p = 0.344 and p = 0.091 respectively). However, C. albicans attachment significantly differed between 0- and 2-year thermally aged groups (p = 0.004), mainly due to elevated initial attachments on CAD-CAM milled acrylic resin base and CAD-CAM 3D-printed urethane methacrylate resin base. CONCLUSIONS: Regardless of the fabrication technique and material combination, no significant differences were found in C. albicans adhesion pre- or post- thermal aging. Milled and 3D-printed bases compared favorably with heat- polymerized PMMA in their affinity for C. albicans attachment and surface characteristics after aging. These findings indicate that the risk of patients developing denture stomatitis might not be linked to the type of acrylic resin or fabrication method used.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the surface characteristics of denture base resin coatings prepared using a novel silica-based film containing hinokitiol and assessed the effect of this coating on Candida albicans adhesion and growth. METHODS: Silica-based coating solutions (control solution; CS) and CS containing hinokitiol (CS-H) were prepared. C. albicans biofilm formed on denture base specimens coated with each solution and these uncoated specimens (control) were analyzed using colony-forming unit (CFU) assay, fluorescence microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Specimen surfaces were analyzed by measuring the surface roughness and wettability and with Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR). Stability of coated specimens was assessed via immersion in water for 1 week for each group (control-1w, CS-1w, and CS-H-1w) followed by CFU assay, measurement of surface roughness and wettability, and FT-IR. RESULTS: CS-H and CS-H-1w contained significantly lower CFUs than those present in the control and control-1w, which was also confirmed via SEM. Fluorescence microscopy from the CS-H group identified several dead cells. The values of surface roughness from coating groups were significantly less than those from the control and control-1w. The surface wettability from all coating groups exhibited high hydrophobicity. FT-IR analyses demonstrated that specimens were successfully coated, and 1H NMR analyses showed that hinokitiol was incorporated inside CS-H. CONCLUSIONS: A silica-based denture coating that incorporates hinokitiol inhibits C. albicans growth on denture. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: We provide a novel antifungal denture coating which can be helpful for the treatment of denture stomatitis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA) on the severity of denture stomatitis (DS) and the counts of Candida spp. in older people (OP) wearing removable prostheses (RP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This randomized, controlled and triple-blind study included forty-three OP presenting DS. The control group was treated with 0.12% chlorhexidine (CHX) and the experimental group with MCFA, 2 × /day for 15 days. Intraoral examination and counts of Candida spp. were performed at 0, 7, and 15 days. The differences between both groups in the decrease of the severity of DS and the viability of Candida spp. were determined clinically and microbiologically, respectively. RESULTS: OP carriers of RP treated with MCFA presented remission of the clinical signs of DS, but the Candida spp. counts only decreased significantly in the CHX-treated group at 7 days of treatment (p < 0.05). Besides, MCFA was shown to reduce the clinical signs of DS after the first week of application, while CHX after the second week. CONCLUSIONS: The MCFA is effective in reducing the clinical signs of DS associated with oral candidiasis in subjects with RP. Both treatments showed a significant decrease in severity, for MCFA after the first week and for CHX two weeks after starting the corresponding treatment. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The MCFA is an effective, harmless, and accessible treatment alternative against DS, since it manages to reduce the severity of the lesion in the milder cases of DS in the oral mucosa of OP carriers of RP.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate changes in the surface characteristics of two denture resins when disinfected with a vinegar-hydrogen peroxide (VHP) mixture. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Microwave-polymerized or 3D printed acrylic resin disks were immersed for 900 min (simulating 90 daily uses) in the following solutions (N = 10): water; 0.5% sodium hypochlorite; hydrogen peroxide and water dilution (1:1 ratio); vinegar and water dilution (1:1 ratio); and VHP mixture. Surface roughness, Knoop microhardness, surface free energy, and scanning electron microscopic images were assessed before and after the immersions. Results were compared using the 2-way ANOVA for repeated measures and Tukey test, at 5% significance. RESULTS: Surface roughness and microhardness did not differ (P > .05) among the solutions and times. Surface free energy and its dispersive component increased (P < .05) for all solutions. All solutions, except for water and VHP mixture, degraded microtopography. CONCLUSIONS: The VHP mixture was not deleterious to conventional and 3D-printed resin surfaces. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Conventional and 3D printed resin dentures can be disinfected with a VHP mixture in a 1:1 ratio because this mixture does not substantially affect the surface characteristics after 90 daily immersions. On the contrary, sodium hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide, and vinegar solutions, even in low concentrations, should be used with caution for denture disinfection because they may alter the resin microtopography over time.

PURPOSE: Denture Stomatitis, a chronic mucosal inflammation associated with Candida albicans, is common among denture wearers. Several health conditions have been linked to chronic Candida infections. The complex, multifactorial nature of denture stomatitis requires the continuous pursuit of effective long-term solutions. The present in vitro study investigated the effect of incorporating organoselenium into 3D-printed denture base resin on C. albicans adhesion and biofilm formation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty disks were fabricated using 3D-printed denture base resin and assigned to three experimental groups (10/group): disks without organoselenium (control), disks with 0.5% organoselenium (0.5%SE), and disks with 1% organoselenium (1%SE). Each disk was incubated with approximately 1 × 106 cells/mL of C. albicans for 48 h. Microbial viability (CFU/mL) was quantified by the spread plate method, while Confocal laser scanning microscopy and scanning electron microscope were performed for quantifying the biofilm thickness and examining biofilm morphology, respectively. Data were analyzed using One-way ANOVA with Tukey's multiple comparisons test. RESULTS: CFU/mL was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in Control when compared with 0.5%SE and 1%SE, but no significant difference between 0.5%SE and 1%SE. A similar trend was observed with biofilm thickness except that there was no significant difference between the Control and 0.5%SE. There was C. albicans biofilm adhesion on the Control disks, with yeast cells and hyphae formation, whereas on 0.5%SE and 1%SE, there was inhibition of yeast cells transition to hyphae formation. CONCLUSIONS: Incorporation of organoselenium into 3D-printed denture base resin was effective in reducing C. albicans biofilm formation and growth on denture base material.

PURPOSE: An interdisciplinary clinical review on denture stomatitis formulated by experts from prosthodontics, oral medicine, and oral microbiology is presented. The review outlines the etiopathogenesis, clinical features, and management strategies of denture stomatitis from an interdisciplinary perspective. MATERIALS AND METHODS: English-language articles relating to the definition, incidence, gender distribution, geographical distribution, etiology, pathogenesis, symptoms, signs, treatment, and prognosis of denture stomatitis were retrieved via electronic literature search. Relevant articles were summarized for this manuscript with a view toward providing pragmatic information. RESULTS: Denture stomatitis represents a very common, multifactorial infectious, inflammatory, and hyperplastic condition which is primarily caused by poor oral hygiene, poor denture hygiene, and full-time; mainly night-time denture wear, bringing about the emergence of advanced Candida-containing polymicrobial biofilms in close proximity to the host's mucosal tissues. Denture stomatitis shares clinically relevant associations with dental caries, periodontitis, median rhomboid glossitis, angular cheilitis, aspirational pneumonia, and associated mortality. CONCLUSIONS: Effective, long-term treatment of denture stomatitis relies upon sustained patient-driven behavioral change which should focus on daily prosthesis-level cleaning and disinfection, removal of dentures at night, every night, engagement with professional denture maintenance, and when required, denture replacement. Antifungal medications offer limited benefits outside of short-term use due to the emergence of antifungal resistance. For frail, older, medically compromised, and nursing home populations, treatment of denture stomatitis lowers the risk of aspirational pneumonia and associated mortality.

Denture stomatitis (DS) is one of the frequent oral diseases caused by multiple factors among denture wearers and is an erythematous lesion of the mucosa in the denture-bearing area, which is a limited and non-specific damage that seriously endangers the oral health of denture wearers. Traditional drug treatment for DS is effective, but it is prone to the development of drug-resistant strains. Therefore, it is important to find new treating options. For the prevention and treatment of DS, there are various methods such as direct administration of azole and polyene antibiotics to the mucosal lesions, extra-oral cleaning of the denture by cleansers and physical disinfection, and modification of denture materials. Natural ingredient preparations that have emerged in recent years are safe, convenient, inexpensive, and less likely to produce drug-resistant strains, and are seen as new sources of drugs for DS treatment. Photodynamic therapy has shown superior antibacterial properties and is also considered promising due to the convenience and safety of the treatment process and the ease of developing drug resistance. Antibacterial agents endow dentures with new characteristics, and denture modification will be a new way to treat DS. In addition, combining different prevention and control methods has shown better antibacterial activity against Candida albicans, which also provides new ideas for prevention and treatment of DS in the future.

This study compared different conditions to establish a rat model of denture stomatitis. Immunocompetent Wistar rats were divided into two groups (n = 35): Tetracycline = administration of 0.83 mg/ml of tetracycline hydrochloride 7 days before induction of denture stomatitis and amoxicillin = administration of 0.156 mg/ml of amoxicillin with clavulanic acid 4 days before induction of denture stomatitis. A suspension of Candida albicans was inoculated on the palate followed by the use of a palatal device contaminated with C. albicans inoculum for 4 days to induce denture stomatitis. As controls, some rats were not submitted to any procedure or used a sterile palatal device for 4 days. The development of denture stomatitis was confirmed by visual analysis, colony-forming units per milliliter (CFU/ml) count, histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses, and through myeloperoxidase (MPO) and N-acetylglucosaminidase (NAG) assays. Rats were euthanized right after device removal (T0), 4 (T4), or 6 (T6) days after device removal. Tetracycline improved the development of the disease, with more severe clinical signs at T0. Similar results were observed in the CFU/ml count and in the histometric and immunohistochemical analyses. Higher MPO expression was detected in the palates of the tetracycline group (P = .006). Despite the subtle differences between antibiotics, tetracycline showed better results in inducing and maintaining denture stomatitis for at least 4 days after device removal.


Denture stomatitis is an oral inflammatory disease with high recurrence rates. Different animal models have been reported in the literature, but some gaps still need to be addressed. A reproducible in vivo model should be established to test new treatment approaches.

We investigated whether irradiation with 405-nm blue LED light could inhibit the growth of not only single- but dual-species biofilms formed by Candida albicans and Streptococcus mutans on denture base resin and cause the alteration in gene expression related to adhesion and biofilm formation. C. albicans and S. mutans single-/dual-species biofilms were formed on the denture base specimens. The biofilms were irradiated with 405-nm blue LED light (power density output: 280 mW/cm2) for 0 (control) and 40 min. Dual-species biofilms were analyzed using CFU assay and fluorescence microscopy, and single-/dual-species biofilms were analyzed using alamarBlue assays and gene expression analysis. To assess the inhibitory effect of irradiation on dual-species biofilms, specimens after irradiation were aerobically incubated for 12 h. After incubation, the inhibition of growth was assessed using CFU assays and fluorescence microscopy. Data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U or Student's t test (p < 0.05). Irradiation produced a significant inhibitory effect on biofilms. Fluorescence microscopy revealed that almost all C. albicans and S. mutans cells were killed by irradiation, and there was no notable difference in biofilm thickness immediately after irradiation and after irradiation and incubation for 12 h. alamarBlue assays indicated the growth of the biofilms was inhibited for 12-13 h. The expression of genes associated with adhesion and biofilm formation-als1 in C. albicans and ftf, gtfC, and gtfB in S. mutans-significantly reduced by irradiation. This study investigated: (1) the microbicidal effect of 405-nm blue LED light irradiation on biofilm formed by Candida albicans hyphae and Streptococcus mutans under dual-species condition on denture base resin, (2) the generation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by irradiation, and (3) the existence of intracellular porphyrins, which act as a photosensitizer. Denture base resin specimens were prepared and C. albicans and S. mutans dual-species biofilms were allowed to form on the specimens. The biofilms were irradiated with 405-nm blue LED light and analyzed using the colony-forming unit assay, fluorescence microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Single-species biofilms of C. albicans and S. mutans formed on the specimens were irradiated with 405-nm blue LED light. After the irradiation, the intracellular ROS levels in C. albicans and S. mutans cells were measured. In addition, the level of intracellular porphyrins in C. albicans and S. mutans were measured. Irradiation for more than 30 min significantly inhibited the colony formation ability of C. albicans and S. mutans. Fluorescence microscopy revealed that almost all C. albicans and S. mutans cells were killed by irradiation. SEM images showed various cell damage patterns. Irradiation led to the generation of intracellular ROS and porphyrins were present in both C. albicans and S. mutans cells. In conclusion, irradiation with 405-nm blue light-emitting diode light for 40 min effectively disinfect C. albicans hyphae and S. mutans dual-species biofilms and possibly react with intracellular porphyrins resulting in generation of ROS in each microorganism.

OBJECTIVES: To modify the surface of denture base material by coating it with cinnamon-laden nanofibers to reduce Candida albicans (C. albicans) adhesion and/or proliferation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Heat-cured poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) specimens were processed and coated, or not, with cinnamon-laden polymeric nanofibers (20 or 40 wt.% of cinnamon relative to the total polymer weight). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses of the nanofibers were performed. Antifungal activity was assessed through agar diffusion and colony-forming unit (CFU/mL) assays. Representative SEM morphological analysis was carried out to observe the presence/absence of C. albicans on the fibers. Alamar blue assay was used to determine cell toxicity. Analysis of variance and the Tukey's test were used to analyze the data (α = 0.05). RESULTS: SEM imaging revealed nanofibers with adequate (i.e., bead-free) morphological characteristics and uniform microstructure. FTIR confirmed cinnamon incorporation. The cinnamon-laden nanofibers led to growth inhibition of C. albicans. Viable fungal counts support a significant reduction on CFU/mL also directly related to cinnamon concentration (40 wt.%: mean log 6.17 CFU/mL < 20 wt.%: mean log 7.12 CFU/mL), which agrees with the SEM images. Cinnamon-laden nanofibers at 40 wt.% led to increased cell death. CONCLUSIONS: The deposition of 20 wt.% cinnamon-laden nanofibers onto PMMA surfaces led to a significant reduction of the adhesive and/or proliferative ability of C. albicans, while maintaining epithelial cells' viability. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The high recurrence rates of denture stomatitis are associated with patient non-adherence to treatments and contaminated prostheses use. Here, we provide the non-patients' cooperation sensible method, which possesses antifungal action, hence improving treatment effectiveness.

BACKGROUND: Coronally advanced flap combined with connective tissue graft is considered as the golden standard of root coverage. Although Miller class I recession is considered to get complete root coverage, there are some uncommon conditions in different cases. This case reported a maxillary lateral incisor with a gingival recession, a stillman's cleft, a bony exostosis and a denture stomatitis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 27-year-old female with a gingival recession, a stillman's cleft and a bony exostosis was treated by coronally advanced flap combined with connective tissue graft technique, and the complete coverage was achieved. Later a denture stomatitis occurred when an acrylic removable partial denture was used, however the gingival margin was not affected. The denture stomatitis disappeared when a new denture with casting palatal plane was produced. In this case of 3-year follow-up, the gingival contour remained stable and the outcome was satisfactory. CONCLUSION: Coronally advanced flap combined with connective tissue graft technique is a classic manner to treat gingival recession especially for a long term stability, even when there is a gingival stillman's cleft, a bony exostosis and a denture stomatitis.

PURPOSE: This randomized controlled trial compared four denture hygiene protocols in terms of patient satisfaction, oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL), and salivary parameters in complete denture wearers with denture stomatitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: For this randomized, double-blind, controlled clinical trial, 108 participants were assigned to soak their dentures in one of the following solutions: (1) 0.25% sodium hypochlorite (positive control), (2) 0.15% Triclosan, (3) denture disinfecting tablets, or (4) denture disinfecting tablets plus palatine mucosa brushing solution. The outcomes of patient satisfaction, OHRQoL, and salivary parameters (salivary flow rate and pH) were measured at baseline and after 10 days. The Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests (between groups), and Wilcoxon test (between times) were used to compare the results. (α = 0.05). RESULTS: After the hygiene protocols, and when compared with baseline, the overall patient satisfaction, maxillary denture satisfaction, maxillary denture comfort, and maxillary denture retention were ameliorated. A significant improvement was noted in OHRQoL in 3 of 4 domains evaluated (orofacial pain and discomfort, masticatory discomfort and disability, and psychological disability and discomfort). The salivary flow rate (unstimulated and stimulated) and salivary pH were not significantly affected at the times evaluated. CONCLUSIONS: Complete denture wearers may feel more satisfied with their complete dentures when treated for denture stomatitis. The tested treatments lead to similar improvement in terms of patient satisfaction and OHRQoL.

The antimicrobial activity of an experimental solution containing essential oil of Lippia sidoides for denture cleaning was evaluated by (1) minimum inhibitory (MIC) and fungicidal/bactericidal concentration (MFC/MBC) tests against Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomona aeruginosa; (2) the metabolic activity of C. albicans biofilm formed on flat-bottom microplates and denture base specimens based on the reduction of 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT); and (3) scanning electron microscopy, to evaluate the fungal biofilm morphology. The solution showed antimicrobial action against the pathogens tested (C. albicans - MIC and MFC: 19.53 µg ml-1, S. aureus - MIC and MBC: 78.12 µg ml-1, P. aeruginosa - MIC: 625 µg ml-1, MBC: 2,500 µg ml-1), reduced the metabolic activity of C. albicans biofilm up to 97%, and caused cell wall damage at low concentrations (195.3-390.6 µg ml-1) and in short time periods (20 min). Therefore, the experimental solution has the potential to be used as an alternative in the prevention and treatment of denture-induced infections.

Medicinal plant extracts are commonly applied for infectious diseases and are perceived as alternatives to conventional antimicrobial agents. We aimed to confirm the efficacy of phytotherapy for denture stomatitis compared with conventional therapies and placebo. A comprehensive literature search was conducted in Pubmed, Embase, Cochrane Library (CENTRAL), Scopus, and Web of Science, in addition to manual searching. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published in English, and studying the treatment of denture stomatitis with herbal medicines, were included. The outcome measures included the relief of clinical signs, reduced Candida colony counts, adverse effects, and patient satisfaction. Nineteen RCTs were included for a systematic review based on selection criteria. Two of them were analyzed using a random-effects model. There was no difference in the relief of clinical signs (odds ratio (OR) = 0.96; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.43-2.15) and microbiological improvement (OR = 1.74; 95% CI: 0.55-5.45) between propolis and miconazole. Most of the included studies showed that phytomedicines had fewer side effects and more patient satisfaction than antifungals or disinfectants. However, further RCTs with more standardly prepared herbal formulations are required to verify the clinical efficacy of phytotherapy as an alternative or adjunctive therapy for denture stomatitis.
