RESUMEN

Circumstances that precipitate interactions among species that have never interacted during their evolutionary histories create ideal conditions for the generation of zoonoses. Zoonotic diseases have caused some of the most devastating epidemics in human history. Contact among species that come from different ecosystems or regions creates the risk of zoonoses. In certain situations, humans are generating and promoting conditions that contribute to the creation of infectious diseases and zoonoses. These conditions lead to interactions between wildlife species that have hitherto not interacted under normal circumstances. I call for recognition of the zoonotic potential that novel and unwanted interactions have; identification of these new interactions that are occurring among wild animals, domestic animals, and humans; and efforts to stop these kinds of interactions because they can give rise to zoonotic outbreaks. Live animal markets, the exotic pet trade, illegal wildlife trade, human use and consumption of wild animals, invasive non-native species, releasing of exotic pets, and human encroachment in natural areas are among the activities that cause the most interactions among wild species, domestic species, and humans. These activities should not occur and must be controlled efficiently to prevent future epidemic zoonoses. Society must develop a keen ability to identify these unnatural interactions and prevent them. Controlling these interactions and efficiently addressing their causal factors will benefit human health and, in some cases, lead to positive environmental, ethical, and socioeconomic outcomes. Until these actions are taken, humanity will face future zoonoses and zoonotic pandemic.


Evitar interacciones novedosas e indeseadas entre especies para disminuir el riesgo de zoonosis Resumen Las circunstancias que promueven interacciones entre especies que nunca han interactuado durante sus historias evolutivas crean condiciones ideales para la generación de zoonosis. Las enfermedades zoonóticas han causado algunas de las epidemias más devastadoras en la historia de la humanidad. El contacto entre especies que provienen de diferentes ecosistemas o regiones crea el riesgo de zoonosis. En determinadas situaciones, los seres humanos estamos generando y promoviendo condiciones que contribuyen a la creación de enfermedades infecciosas y zoonosis. Estas condiciones conducen a interacciones entre especies silvestres que hasta ahora no habían interactuado en circunstancias normales. Hago un llamado para que se reconozca el potencial zoonótico que tienen las interacciones nuevas y no deseadas; que se identifiquen estas nuevas interacciones que provocamos entre animales silvestres, animales domésticos y humanos; y esforzarnos para detener este tipo de interacciones porque pueden dar lugar a brotes zoonóticos. Los mercados de animales vivos, el comercio de mascotas exóticas, el comercio ilegal de vida silvestre, el uso y consumo humano de animales silvestres, las especies invasoras no nativas, la liberación de mascotas exóticas y la invasión humana en áreas naturales, se encuentran entre las actividades que causan la mayor cantidad de interacciones entre especies silvestres, especies domésticas y humanos. Estas actividades no deberían ocurrir y deben controlarse eficientemente para prevenir futuras zoonosis epidémicas. La sociedad debe desarrollar una gran capacidad para identificar estas interacciones antinaturales y prevenirlas. Controlar estas interacciones y abordar eficientemente sus factores causales beneficiará la salud humana y, en algunos casos, conducirá a resultados ambientales, éticos y socioeconómicos positivos. Mientras estas medidas no se tomen, la humanidad enfrentará futuras zoonosis y pandemias zoonóticas.

Osteochondral allograft (OCA) transplantation involves grafting of natural hyaline cartilage and supporting subchondral bone into the cartilage defect area to restore its biomechanical and tissue structure. However, differences in biomechanical properties and donor-host matching may impair the integration of articular cartilage (AC). This study analyzed the biomechanical properties of the AC in different regions of different sites of the knee joint and provided a novel approach to OCA transplantation. Intact stifle joints from skeletally mature pigs were collected from a local abattoir less than 8 h after slaughter. OCAs were collected from different regions of the joints. The patella and the tibial plateau were divided into medial and lateral regions, while the trochlea and femoral condyle were divided into six regions. The OCAs were analyzed and compared for Young's modulus, the compressive modulus, and cartilage thickness. Young's modulus, cartilage thickness, and compressive modulus of OCA were significantly different in different regions of the joints. A negative correlation was observed between Young's modulus and the proportion of the subchondral bone (r = - 0.4241, P < 0.0001). Cartilage thickness was positively correlated with Young's modulus (r = 0.4473, P < 0.0001) and the compressive modulus (r = 0.3678, P < 0.0001). During OCA transplantation, OCAs should be transplanted in the same regions, or at the closest possible regions to maintain consistency of the biomechanical properties and cartilage thickness of the donor and recipient, to ensure smooth integration with the surrounding tissue. A 7 mm depth achieved a higher Young's modulus, and may represent the ideal length.

Due to the lack of basic information on Chinese ghee and the increasing demand of consumers for natural oils, this study aims to explore and distinguish the quality characteristics of ghee in different regions of China. Ghee samples from 16 regions of Qinghai Province, Gansu Province, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, and Tibet Autonomous Region were selected and their physicochemical properties, fatty acids, texture, antioxidant and antibacterial activities were determined. The results showed that: (1) The physicochemical properties of ghee were different from different regions, but the freshness and fat content are generally high. The results of iodine value and saponification value suggest that the fatty acid composition is good; (2) The unsaturated fatty acid/saturated fatty acid content of ghee in Tibet and Xinjiang ranges from 63.05% to 79.13%, which is better than that in other regions; (3) Gansu Diebu ghee has the highest hardness (40.69 N); (4) Ghee from different regions has good antioxidant activity, DPPH free radical scavenging activity is 30.45% to 58.06%, ABTS free radical scavenging activity is 41.14% to 65.53%, and has varying degrees of inhibition on gram-positive bacteria. In addition, yak ghee, cattle-yak ghee and cow ghee have better fatty acid composition and antibacterial ability than scalper ghee. The results of this study distinguish the differences in the quality characteristics of yak ghee in different geographical regions. Therefore, it can provide a theoretical basis for the origin tracing and quality-oriented improvement of yak ghee.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to investigate the difference of serum pepsinogen (PG) baseline levels in different regions of China and its influencing factors. METHODS: From October 2016 to October 2018, asymptomatic health checkup people who underwent nasal endoscopy in nine health management centers in different regions of China were collected. Lifestyle questionnaires were conducted, and serum PG and gastroscopy were performed. The differences in PG levels in baseline population (OLGA-0 grade) were studied according to geographical subregions of China. SPSS software was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: 1922 patients were included in the final analysis. Compared with the non-atrophy (OLGA-0) group, PGR levels in atrophy group (OLGA-I to IV) were significantly decreased with the atrophy degree (p < 0.05). A total of 1590 baseline people (OLGA-0) were included in the study, including 254 from South China, 574 from East China, 210 from Southwest China, 332 from Northeast China, and 220 from Central/Northern China. There were significant differences in baseline PGI levels among the five regions (p < 0.05). The PGII levels were also different among the five regions, except for Central/Northern versus Southern China. PGR (PGI/PGII ratio) levels in Southern China were higher than other four regions. Further studies were conducted on the related factors that might affect the baseline PG level, which was affected by nationality, dietary habits, smoking, Helicobacter pylori infection and other related factors. CONCLUSION: Influenced by many factors, the baseline PG levels are different in different regions of China. In the follow-up studies of PG cut-off value, different PG cut-off value based on region may be more effective in the screening of gastric cancer and precancerous lesions in China.

AIMS: The purpose of this experiment was to study the bacterial diversity of traditional fermented sausages from four typical regions of China (Chengdu, Shenzhen, Changsha and Harbin) and to further evaluate their microbiological safety. METHODS AND RESULTS: The diversity of the microbiota of the sausages was studied using the Illumina HiSeq platform. The results showed that compared with the highest diversity of fermented bacteria in Guangdong, the bacterial diversity of fermented sausage was the lowest in Sichuan. The percentage of dominant phylum (Firmicutes, Cyanophyta, Proteobacter) were 78·39, 13·13 and 7·14% in SC, 35·47, 30·36 and 28·04% in GD, 54·81, 28·91 and 14·00% in HN, 20·20, 58·16 and 17·31% in HB respectively. The main genus distribution of fermented sausages in different regions is varied, but lactic acid bacteria and cyanobacteria are generally the main ones. Traditional fermented sausages using natural fermentation methods have poor microbiological safety, and pathogenic and spoilage micro-organisms such as Acinetobacter, Brochothrix and Pseudomonas have been detected in all four regions. CONCLUSIONS: The results in this paper provide a microbiota profile of four typical fermented sausages in China. There is a big difference in the microbiota of sausages in different regions, and the good flavour of traditional Chinese fermented sausage is related closely with the abundant microbial resources, however, the natural fermentation method also expose to the product security threats, including spoilage, pathogenic micro-organisms and biogenic amines, etc. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The results would offer guidance for industrial fermented sausage production with certain flavour and also improve the microbial resource utilization, and contribute to the control of harmful micro-organisms in traditional fermented sausage.

Dendrobium officinale Kimura et Migo, a rare and traditional medicinal plant, contains many nutrients such as polysaccharides, alkaloids, amino acids and so on. Different growth environment and intraspecific hybridization of different germplasm resources lead to large differences in the yield, quality and medicinal value of D. officinale. Here, the volatile compounds of D. officinale from four producing regions (Zhejiang, Fujian, Yunnan and Jiangxi) were analyzed to provide a certain reference value for the selection of a specific medicinal component in D. officinale breeding. Fresh stems of D. officinale germplasm resources were collected, and the chemical constituents were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. A total of 101 volatile compounds were identified, of which esters and alcohols accounted for 23 and 22. Hexacosane is the highest relative content of all volatile components. The highest content of hexacosane was observed in YA1 from Yunnan was 34.41%, and the lowest (23.41%) in JA1 from Jiangxi. Moreover, 5-10 unique substances were determined in different regions. A total of 17 medicinal components were detected, and three unique medicinal components were detected only in YA1, revealing that YA1 can provide raw materials for the application of specific medicinal substances extraction. A total of four toxic components were detected, but no toxic components were detected in JA1 from Jiangxi, suggested that the germplasm resources from Jiangxi could be exploited efficiently for breeding superior D. officinale specimens. The results provide a theoretical basis for the collection, protection and utilization of D. officinale germplasm resources in different regions.

In this study, we develop and validate a simultaneous quantification of polyphenols method based on an ultra-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-ESI-MS/MS) to adequately understand how different habitats influence the quality and profile of Moringa oleifera polyphenol. Furthermore, principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) were used to compare and discriminate 25 samples collected from different areas. A significant correlation was found between the polyphenol profile and the collection area. Significant differences in the polyphenol content of Moringa oleifera from different regions indicate that the genetic diversity of Moringa oleifera was relatively rich, possibly due to differences in cultivation conditions, climate, or soil environment resulting in the accumulation of different polyphenols. These observations provide a theoretical basis for subsequent Moringa oleifera germplasm selection and development research. Furthermore, the quantitative analysis methodology used to characterize the polyphenols may be used toward developing quality assessment and future pharmacodynamic investigations of Moringa oleifera.

In different regions of China, climate change has various influences on urban and rural residential energy consumption, which also shows that the research on it could be profoundly vital in order to formulate the energy-saving and emission-reducing policies. Based the provincial panel data from 2000-2016, the extended stochastic impacts by regression on population, affluence, and technology (extended STIRPAT) model was utilized to evaluate the impacts of climate change on residential energy consumption in different Chinese regions. The results show that: (1) during 2000 to 2016, the urban and rural energy consumption enlarged by 878.83 billion kWh and 488.98 billion kWh, respectively. In addition, electricity and oil have occupied more proportion in urban energy consumption, while coal still plays an important role in rural residential energy consumption (28.2%). (2) Heating degree day (HDD) and cooling degree day (CDD) have positive influences on urban and rural residential energy consumption in different areas, and the elastic coefficients are 0.028-0.371 and 0.066-0.158, respectively. (3) The elastic coefficient of CDD in urban areas of southern regions (0.158) is much larger than that in northern regions (0.068).

An ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole/time of flight mass spectrometry is used to identify 33 compounds in Notopterygii rhizoma and radix, after which a single standard to determine multi-components method is established for the simultaneous determination of 19 compounds in Notopterygii rhizoma and radix using chlorogenic acid and notopterol as the internal standard. To screen the potential chemical markers among Notopterygii rhizoma and radix planted in its natural germination area and in others, the quantitative data of 19 compounds are analyzed via partial least-squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). Depending on the variable importance parameters (VIP) value of PLS-DA, six compounds are selected to be the potential chemical markers for the discrimination of Notopterygii rhizoma and radix planted in the different regions. Furthermore, the Fisher's discriminant analysis is used to build the models that are used to classify Notopterygii rhizoma and radix from the different regions based on the six chemical markers. Experimental results indicate that Notopterygii rhizoma and radix planted in the Sichuan province are distinguished successfully from those in other regions, reaching a 96.0% accuracy rating. Therefore, a single standard to determine multi-components method combined with a chemometrics method, which contains the advantages such as simple, rapid, economical and accurate identification, offers a new perspective for the quantification, evaluation and classification of Notopterygii rhizoma and radix from the different regions.

A gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS)method was established for the analysis of volatile components in Mentha haplocalyx, and seven principal components were quantified by gas chromatography(GC). Based on these analyses, the differences of volatile components in M. haplocalyx from Jiangsu, Anhui and other regions were compared. The results showed that the volatile oil of M. haplocalyx was divided into four chemical types:menthol-menthone type, pulegone-menthone type, piperitone-menthol type, piperitone epoxide type, and menthol-menthone type was the principal type. Menthol was the highest and pulegone was the lowest. The differences of M. haplocalyx from Anhui and other regions were obvious. The major volatile components and the differences of M. haplocalyx from different regions were confirmed and a quantitative method was established for the determination of volatile components, which provided the basis for improving the quality standard of M. haplocalyx.

This study performed a comparative analysis of the sensory and microbial profiles of light-flavor Bijou (LFD) from Taiyuan (Shanxi Province) and Suizhou (Hubei Province) in China. The results of the electronic nose showed that the aromatic substances of the LFD from Taiyuan (TLFD) were significantly higher (p < .05), while alcohol and aldehyde substances were significantly lower (p < .05) compared with the LFD from Suizhou (SLFD). The average response values of sensors W1C (sensitive to aromatic hydrocarbons), W3C (sensitive to amine and aromatic components), W5C (sensitive to olefins, aromatics, and polar molecules), and W2S (sensitive to alcohol and aldehyde compounds) to TLFD were 0.26, 0.33, 0.34, and 7.72, whereas the response values to SLFD were 0.25, 0.32, 0.33, and 8.04, respectively. The electronic tongue results showed that the aftertaste A (bitter aftertaste) and aftertaste B (astringent aftertaste) of the TLFD were significantly higher (p < .05) and umami was significantly lower (p < .05) as compared to the SLFD. The relative intensities of the aftertaste A, aftertaste B, and umami indicators of TLFD were 0.10, -0.008, and -0.22, respectively, while those of SLFD were -0.23, -0.36, and 0.835, respectively. MiSeq high-throughput sequencing results showed that TLFD exhibited lower fungal richness and diversity compared to SLFD. The dominant bacterial genera were mainly Bacillus (58.12%), Kroppenstedtia (10.11%), and Weissella (6.26%), and the dominant fungal genera were Saccharomycopsis (67.53%), Rasamsonia (9.90%), and Thermoascus (7.10%). Streptomyces and Staphylococcus were identified as the key characteristic microorganisms in TLFD, while Kroppenstedtia, Rasamsonia, and Thermoascus were the key characteristic microorganisms in SLFD. Correlation analysis indicated a stronger correlation between microorganisms and sensory characteristics in SLFD samples. This study provides valuable insights into the sensory and microbiological characteristics of LFD from different regions and offers a new perspective for understanding the production of differently flavored light-flavor Baijiu.

Objectives: Increasing dependence on smartphones results in the appearance of psychological problems, especially among young people. This study aims to determine the rates of alexithymia and its relationship with smartphone addiction and psychological distress in university students. Methods: A total of 2616 students (mean age = 22.5±3.5 years; 73.1% female) from universities in Egypt, Oman, and Pakistan were included in a cross-sectional and comparative study conducted through a web survey during the COVID-19 pandemic from October to December 2021. The following scales were used: Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21), and Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version (SAS-SV). The survey also included questions related to sociodemographic and smartphone usage patterns.

OBJECTIVE: To collect the data of pedicle width and height in different areas, and to investigate the difference and variation rule of pedicle width and height. METHODS: Comprehensive search of PubMed, Ovid Medline, and Web of science databases was performed. Collected data were imported into SPSS, and one-way ANOVA test and post hoc test were used to determine whether there were statistical differences in pedicle width and height between the different regions. RESULTS: Oceania had the largest pedicle width and height, followed by Americans. West Asian had the largest pedicle width in Asia, followed by East and Southeast Asian, and Chinese and South Asian had similar pedicle width. Different from the variation pattern of pedicle width, the pedicle height of Chinese, East and Southeast Asian and West Asian in Asian range is similar, but the pedicle height of South Asian is significantly smaller than the first three, and has statistical significance. CONCLUSIONS: People in different regions have similar patterns of variation in pedicle width and height even though they belong to different ethnic groups. This phenomenon is particularly prominent and pronounced in populations in geographically close areas, which may be related to inter-ethnic integration due to population movement between adjacent areas. There is a relationship between the morphological characteristics of the human lumbar pedicle and geographical location.

Tea (Camellia sinensis L.) is one of the most widely consumed non-alcoholic beverages worldwide. In the present study, 73 commercial tea samples were collected from tea plantations in the Southwest, South, Jiangnan, and Jiangbei regions of China. The contents of four macroelements (phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg)) and 15 trace metals (arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), aluminium (Al), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), thorium (Th), thallium (Tl), rubidium (Rb) and barium (Ba)) in tea samples were determined. The mean concentrations of As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Pb, Zn, Al, Cu, Mn, Fe, Ni, Th, Tl, Rb and Ba were in the range of 0.02-0.61, 0.008-0.126, 0.09-1.12, 0.001-0.012, 0.07-1.62, 19.5-73.2, 170-2100, 5.9-43.3, 228-2040, 60-337, 2.09-17.95, 0.002-0.08, 0.004-0.409, 0-150.50 and 3.1-41.2 µg/g, respectively, which were all lower than the maximum permissible limits stipulated by China (NY/T 288-2012, NY 659-2003). The target hazard quotients of each heavy metal were lower than one, and the combined risk hazard index of all heavy metals for adults was in the range of 0.10-0.85; therefore, there was no significant carcinogenic health risks to tea drinking consumers under the current dietary intake. Significant differences were found in the content of trace elements (Zn, Cu, Fe, Ni, Th, Tl, Rb and Ba) (p < 0.05); however, no significant differences were found in the content of macroelements (P, K, Ca and Mg) and trace metals (As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Pb, Al and Mn) in teas from different regions. Therefore, the region did not affect the heavy metal exposure risk. Correlation coefficient and principal component analyses were performed to determine the source of the elements. Three principal factors were obtained: factor 1 was positively related to Ca, Mg, As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Pb, Al, Mn, Fe and Th (32.63%); factor 2 to P, Zn, Cu and Ni (18.64%) and factor 3 to K and Rb (10.10%). Thus, the elements in the same factor might originate from the same source. This study provides an essential basis to understand the variance and potential risks of different elements in tea from different regions of China.

Objective: The goal of this study is to use summary generation and topic modeling to identify factors contributing to vaccine attitudes for three different vaccine brands, with the aim of generalizing these factors across different regions. Methods: A total of 5562 tweets about three vaccine brands (Sinovac, AstraZeneca, and Pfizer) were collected from 14 December 2020 to 30 December 2021. BERTopic clustering is used to group the tweets into topics, and then contrastive learning (CL) is adopted to generate summaries of each topic. The main content of each topic is generalized into three factors that contribute to vaccine attitudes: vaccine-related factors, health system-related factors, and individual social attributes. Results: BERTopic clustering outperforms Latent Dirichlet Allocation clustering in our analysis. It can also be found that using CL for summary generation helped to better model the topics, particularly at the center-point of the clustering. Our model identifies three main factors contributing to vaccine attitudes that are consistent across different regions. Conclusions: Our study demonstrates the effectiveness of deep learning methods for identifying factors contributing to vaccine attitudes in different regions. By determining these factors, policymakers and medical institutions can develop more effective strategies for addressing concerns related to the vaccination process.

Dongcai is loved for its delicious flavor and nutritional value. The microorganisms in Dongcai play a vital role in their flavor, quality, and safety, and the microbial communities of Dongcai vary greatly from region to region. However, it remains unknown what the predominant microorganisms are in different traditional Dongcai and how they affect its flavor. The objective of this study is to explore the microbial diversity of traditional fermented Dongcai in three representative Chinese regions (Tianjin, Sichuan, and Guangzhou) and further assess their microbial functions. The microbial diversity of fermented Dongcai in Guangdong has the lowest diversity compared to fermented Dongcai in Sichuan, which has the highest. The distribution of the main genera of fermented Dongcai varies from region to region, but Carnimonas, Staphylococcus, Pseudomonas, Sphingomonas, Burkholderia-Caballeronia-Paraburkholderia, and Rhodococcus are the dominant genera in common. In addition, halophilic bacteria (HAB, i.e., Halomonas Bacillus, Virgibacillus, etc.) and lactic acid bacteria (LAB, i.e., Weissella and Lactobacillus) are also highly abundant. Of these, Burkholderia-Caballeronia-Paraburkholderia, Rhodococcus, Sphingomonas, Ralstonia, and Chromohalobacter are dominant in the Sichuan samples. In the Tianjin samples, Lactobacillus, Weissella, Virgibacillus, Enterobacter, Klebsiella, and Pseudomonas are the most abundant. Predictions of microbial metabolic function reveal that carbohydrates, amino acids, polyketides, lipids, and other secondary metabolites are abundantly available for biosynthesis. In addition, the different flavors of the three types of Dongcai may be due to the fact that the abundance of HAB and LAB shows a significant positive correlation with the amounts of important metabolites (e.g., salt, acid, amino nitrogen, and sugar). These results contribute to our understanding of the link between the distinctive flavors of different types of Dongcai and the microorganisms they contain and will also provide a reference for the relationship between microbial communities and flavor substances in semi-fermented pickles.

To explore the variation in the absolute abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in different regions of China under different land use modes and different planting years, the qualitative and quantitative study of sulfonamide (sul1,sul2) and macrolide (ermB,mefA) ARGs and an integron gene (intl1) were conducted using ordinary PCR and the fluorescence quantitative technique. The results revealed that the frequencies of sulfonamides (sul1,sul2) and intl1 were all 100% in different soils, and the detection frequencies of macrolides (ermB,mefA) were 100% in facilities vegetable fields; however, in open vegetable fields, and open grain fields, the frequencies of ermB were 94%, and those of mefA were 92% and 90%, respectively. The absolute abundance of sulfonamide and macrolide ARGs was the highest in 15 years facilities vegetable soil in Heilongjiang Province. The absolute abundance of intl1 was the highest in 15 years facilities vegetable soil in Neimenggu Province. The absolute abundances of ARGs and intl1 in facilities vegetable soil of 3, 7, and 15 years were significantly higher than that in open grain fields and open vegetable fields of the same years. The absolute abundance of ARGs and intl1 in facilities vegetable fields for 7 years and 15 years were significantly higher than that for 3 years. There was no significant linear relationship between the gene accumulation and planting life in open vegetable fields and open grain fields, except for sul1 andsul2, whereas there was a significantly positive correlation in facilities vegetable soil. Correlation analysis demonstrated that there was a significant positive correlation between the abundance of ARGs and the abundance of intl1 in different soils. This reveals the accumulation of ARGs and intl1 in soils with different utilization patterns, thereby providing reference and support for secure agricultural production.

Introduction: To unearth superior countermeasures that improve psychological health and upgrade the quality of employment for medical students in China in post-epidemic era, this study was designed to determine the possible factors affecting psychological status and future career choice of this population. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was carried out. Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21) and Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) were applied to measure psychological state. Chi-square and logistic regression analyses were adopted to filtrate related factors for psychological health and employment intention. Results: A total of 936 medical students, including 522 from eastern universities and 414 from western universities, were enrolled in the study. Anxiety among students in China's western universities was higher than that in China's eastern universities (30.4% vs. 22.0%), but no differences in the occurrences of stress (11.4% vs. 13.4%), depression (28.7% vs. 24.5%) and insomnia (30.7% vs. 25.7%). Grades, academic ranking, household income, attitudes about COVID-19 were associated with the occurrence of psychological problems. In addition, major, education level, academic ranking, family income, and clinical experience may affect the choice of future employment location and employment income. Notably, household income affected by COVID-19 and the perception of epidemic prevention and control resulted in changes in future employment region and income. COVID-19 can lead medical students with psychological problems to have a negative attitude toward future employment. Encouragingly, multiple activities, namely, proactive consideration of employment, taking part in career planning training lectures and timely adjustment of career planning, were beneficial to the professional identity of medical students. Conclusion: This study suggests that medical student psychology is influenced by COVID-19 and academic and financial pressures; actively coping with COVID-19 and making career planning in advance will contribute to optimizing future employment. Our findings provide a potent guideline for relevant departments to accurately adjust job deployment and for medical students to actively choose a career in the future.

BACKGROUND: Vegetation phenology can characterize ecosystem functions and plays a key role in the dynamics of plant productivity. Here we investigated the changes in growing season metrics (start of growing season, SOS; end of growing season, EOS; length of growing season, LOS) and their relationships with net primary productivity (NPP) in forestland and grassland in China during 1981-2016. RESULTS: SOS advanced, EOS delayed, LOS prolonged and NPP increased significantly in 23.7%, 21.0%, 40.5% and 19.9% of the study areas, with an average rate of 3.9 days decade-1, 3.3 days·decade-1, 6.7 days·decade-1 and 10.7 gC m-2·decade-1, respectively. The changes in growing season metrics were obvious in Northwest China (NWC) and North China (NC), but the least in Northeast China (NEC). NPP was negatively correlated with SOS and positively correlated with EOS and LOS in 22.0%, 16.3% and 22.8% of the study areas, respectively, and the correlation between NPP and growing season metrics was strong in NWC, NC and Southwest China (SWC), but weak in NEC and South China (SC). CONCLUSION: The advanced SOS, delayed EOS and prolonged LOS all contribute to the increased NPP in forestland and grassland in China, especially in NWC, NC and SWC. This study also highlights the need to further study the response of NPP to growing season changes in different regions and under the influence of multiple factors.

Introduction: Italian ryegrass is less studied in northern China due to high-quality forage grass has not been fully utilized. Full utilization of high-quality forage grass helps to alleviate the shortage of forage grass in winter and spring season and guarantee stable development of livestock production. Consequently, this study was aimed to evaluate the effects of different regions in northern China on the fermentative products, bacterial community compositions, and metabolic pathways and metabolites of Italian ryegrass silage. Methods: The Italian ryegrass was harvested from three regions (Ordos-WK; Hohhot-AK; Ulanqab-SYK) and ensiled for 60 days. Single molecule real-time (SMRT) sequencing and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) were used to analyze bacterial communities and metabolites, respectively. Results: After 60 d of fermentation, the SYK group had the lowest pH (4.67), the highest lactic acid contents (95.02 g/kg DM) and largest lactic acid bacteria populations (6.66 log10 cfu/g FM) among the treatment groups. In addition, the SYK group had the highest abundance of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (63.98%). In SYK group, isoquinoline alkaloid biosynthesis was the significantly enriched (p < 0.05) and high-impact value (0.0225) metabolic pathway. In AK group, tryptophan metabolism the was the significantly enriched (p < 0.001) and high-impact value (0.1387) metabolic pathway. In WK group, citrate cycle (TCA cycle) was the significantly enriched (p < 0.001) and high-impact value (0.1174) metabolic pathway. Further, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum was positively correlated with cinnamic acid, tetranor 12-HETE, D-Mannitol, (2S)-2-amino-4-methylpentanoic acid L-Leucine, guanine, isoleucyl-aspartate and 3,4-Dihydroxyphenyl propanoate, but negatively correlated with isocitrate and D-mannose. Discussion: In conclusion, this study can improve our understanding of the ensiling microbiology and metabolomics in different regions to further regulate the fermentation products and promote livestock production.
