ABSTRACT

Tea is an indispensable beverage in people's daily life. However, the relationship between tea intake and dental caries and periodontitis is controversial. We extracted datasets for tea intake and oral diseases from genome-wide association studies (GWASs) conducted by the UK Biobank and the Gene Lifestyle Interactions in Dental Endpoints consortium. We selected 38 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) significantly associated with tea intake as instrumental variables (IVs) (P < 5.0 × 10-8). Mendelian randomization (MR) was performed to investigate the potential causality between tea intake and caries and periodontitis. Multivariable Mendelian randomization (MVMR) analyses were utilized to estimate causal effects of tea intake on risk of caries and periodontitis after adjusting for smoking, body mass index (BMI), and socioeconomic factors. The results showed that higher tea intake was suggestively associated with fewer natural teeth (ß = - 0.203; 95% CI = 0.680 to 0.980; P = 0.029) and higher risk of periodontitis (OR = 1.622; 95% CI = 1.194 to 2.205; P = 0.002). After Bonferroni correction, the causality of tea intake on periodontitis remained significant. The significance of periodontitis disappeared after adjusting for the socioeconomic factors in MVMR (OR = 1.603; 95% CI = 0.964 to 2.666; P = 0.069). Tea intake had no association with risk of caries. Statistical insignificance of the heterogeneity test and pleiotropy test supported the validity of the MR study. Our results provide insight into the potential relationship between tea intake and oral diseases from a dietary lifestyle perspective, which may help prevent oral diseases.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Several observational studies have suggested that oral anticoagulants (OACs) might reduce the risk of dementia in the elderly, but the evidence is inconclusive. And the consistency of this relationship across different OAC classes and dementia subtypes is still uncertain. METHODS: To comprehensively evaluate this association, we applied Mendelian randomization (MR) combined with pharmacovigilance analysis. MR was used to assess the associations between genetic proxies for three target genes of OACs (VKORC1, F2, and F10) and dementia, including Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VaD). This genetic analysis was supplemented with real-world pharmacovigilance data, employing disproportionality analysis for more reliable causal inference. RESULTS: Increased expression of the VKORC1 gene was strongly associated with increased risk of dementia, especially for AD (OR = 1.28, 95% CI = 1.14-1.43; p value < 0.001). Based on pharmacovigilance data, vitamin K antagonists (VKAs, inhibitors targeting VKORC1) exhibited a protective effect against dementia risk (ROR = 0.43, 95% CI = 0.28-0.67). Additional sensitivity analyses, including different MR models and cohorts, supported these results. Conversely, no strong causal associations of genetically proxied F2 and F10 target genes with dementia and its subtypes were found. CONCLUSIONS: This study reveals that the inhibition of genetically proxied VKORC1 expression or VKAs exposure is associated with a reduced risk of Alzheimer's dementia. However, there is little evidence to support similar associations with direct oral anticoagulants (F2 inhibitors and F10 inhibitors). Further research is warranted to clinically validate our findings.

ABSTRACT

In clinical trials that are subject to noncompliance, the commonly used intention-to-treat estimand is valid as a causal effect of treatment assignment but is sensitive to the level of compliance. An alternative estimand, the complier average causal effect (CACE), measures the average effect of treatment received in the latent subset of subjects who would comply with either assigned treatment. Because the principal stratum of compliers can vary with the circumstances of the trial, CACE too depends on the compliance fraction. We propose a model in which an underlying latent proto-compliance interacts with trial characteristics to determine a subject's compliance behavior. When the latent compliance is independent of the individual treatment effect, the average causal effect is constant across compliance classes, and CACE is robust across trials and equal to the population average causal effect. We demonstrate the potential degree of sensitivity of CACE in a simulation study, an analysis of data from a trial of vitamin A supplementation in children, and a meta-analysis of trials of epidural analgesia in labor.

ABSTRACT

Owing to the implementation of the zero wastewater discharge policy in China, stricter supervision and technical requirements have been imposed. Hot flue gas evaporation technology exhibits significant advantages in desulfurization wastewater treatment. However, volatile constituents (such as selenium, Se) present in wastewater may be released, thus disrupting the power plant's original Se balance. In this study, the evaporation of three desulfurization wastewater plants is performed. The release of Se mainly begins from the threshold at which wastewater is evaporated to dryness, and Se release rates of 21.5, 25.1, and 35.6% are detected. Furthermore, the key components and properties of wastewater for Se migration are identified through experiments and density functional theory calculations. Lower pH values and Cl- contents are not conducive to Se stability, and this tendency is more pronounced in selenite. The suspended solid content temporarily traps the Se in the initial evaporation process, as confirmed via a decrease in the Se release rate and a high binding energy (-307.7 kJ/mol). Moreover, results of risk assessment reveal that wastewater evaporation results in a negligible increase in Se concentration. This study evaluates the risk of Se release during wastewater evaporation and provides a basis for Se emission control strategies.

ABSTRACT

Selenium (Se) is essential for successful male reproduction. However, the association of Se status with human semen quality remains controversial and the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. We measured seminal plasma Se concentrations, sperm mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNAcn), and sperm quality parameters among healthy Chinese men screened as potential sperm donors. Linear mixed-effects models were used to investigate the associations of within-subject pooled seminal plasma Se concentrations (n = 1159) with repeated sperm quality parameters (n = 5617); mediation analyses were applied to evaluate the mediating role of sperm mtDNAcn (n = 989). Seminal plasma Se concentrations were positively associated with sperm concentration and total count (both P for trend < 0.001). In adjusted models, men in the top vs. bottom quartiles of seminal plasma Se concentrations had 70.1 % (95 % CI: 53.3 %, 88.9 %) and 59.1 % (95 % CI: 40.5 %, 80.2 %) higher sperm concentration and total count, respectively. Meanwhile, we observed inverse associations between seminal plasma Se concentrations and sperm mtDNAcn, and between sperm mtDNAcn and sperm motility, concentration, and total count (all P for trend < 0.05). Mediation analyses suggested that sperm mtDNAcn mediated 19.7 % (95 % CI: 15.9 %, 25.3 %) and 23.1 % (95 % CI: 17.4 %, 33.4 %) of the associations between seminal plasma Se concentrations and sperm concentration and total count, respectively. Our findings suggest that Se is essential for male spermatogenesis, potentially by affecting sperm mtDNAcn.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Network pharmacology provides new methods and references for the research of traditional Chinese medicine, but some problems remain, such as single evaluation components and index methods, imperfect relevant databases, unscientific prediction results, and lack of verification of results. Herein, we used a modified network pharmacology research method to explore the potential network analysis mechanism of Huoxue Qingre decoction in the treatment of coronary heart disease and utilized clinical trials for assessment. Methods: Based on literature research, the targets corresponding to the drug were obtained with the assistance of the TCMSP database and Swiss Target Prediction, and the target proteins were corrected using the UniProt database. The targets related to coronary heart disease was obtained through the GeneCards database. A protein-protein interaction network diagram was constructed, and a "component-intersection target" network diagram was drawn based on Cytoscape 3.6.2 software. The mapped targets were imported into the DAVID bioinformatics platform, which underwent Gene Ontology (GO) function and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analysis, and the network pharmacology prediction results were evaluated through clinical trials. Results: We obtained 151 compounds related to Huoxue Qingre decoction, 286 genes after evaluation and deduplication, and 426 genes related to coronary heart disease. Finally, 81 common target genes were obtained with 32 pathways according to the KEGG pathway enrichment analysis. The validation results of the clinical trials showed that a total of 98 differential metabolites were found in the treatment of coronary heart disease with Huoxue Qingre decoction, involving a total of 16 metabolic pathways. Compared with the network pharmacology prediction results, it was found that only the pathways in cancer (hsa05200) were the common pathways in the top 32 signaling pathways predicted by network pharmacology. The expanded network pharmacology prediction results revealed that the sphingolipid signaling pathway (hsa04071) and prostate cancer pathway (hsa05215) matched the predicted metabolic pathways, with differential metabolites of N-oleoyl-D-sphingomyelin and 1-methyl-6-phenyl-1h-imidazole[4,5-b]pyridine-2-amine. Conclusion: Through the network analysis and metabolomic evaluation, there may be three signaling pathways that involve the Huoxue Qingre decoction in the treatment of coronary heart disease: pathways in cancer (hsa05200), sphingolipid signaling pathway (hsa04071), and prostate cancer pathway (hsa05215).

OBJECTIVES: Heart failure (HF) has been implicated in osteoporosis. However, causality remains unestablished. Here, we sought to assess causal associations of genetic liability to HF with osteoporosis using Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses. METHODS: Independent single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with HF at genome-wide significance were derived from a large genome-wide association study (GWAS) (including up to 977,323 individuals). We obtained summary statistics for forearm (FA) bone mineral density (BMD) (n = 8,143), femoral neck (FN) BMD (n = 32,735), lumbar spine (LS) BMD (n = 28,498), heel (HE) BMD (n = 426,824), and fracture (n = 1,214,434) from other GWAS meta-analyses. Inverse variance weighted (IVW) and several supplementary methods were performed to calculate the MR estimates. RESULTS: Genetically determined HF has no causal effect on FA-BMD (odds ratio (OR) 1.17; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.82, 1.66; P = 0.389), FN-BMD (OR 1.01; 95% CI 0.85, 1.19; P = 0.936), LS-BMD (OR 0.96; 95% CI 0.80, 1.17; P = 0.705), HE-BMD (OR 1.01; 95% CI 0.90, 1.13; P = 0.884), and fracture risk (OR 1.00; 95% CI 0.92, 1.10; P = 0.927). Complementary analyses returned broadly consistent results. CONCLUSION: This MR study provides genetic evidence that HF may not lead to an increased risk of reduced BMDs or fracture.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Scutellaria baicalensis, a medicinal herb belonging to the Lamiaceae family, has been recorded in the Chinese, European, and British Pharmacopoeias. The medicinal properties of this plant are attributed to the total flavonoids of Scutellaria baicalensis (TFSB), particularly the main component, baicalin. This study provides a systematic and comprehensive list of the identified TFSB components and their chemical structures. The quality control process, pharmacokinetics, clinical application, and safety of Scutellaria baicalensis are discussed, and its pharmacological effect on cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) is detailed. Finally, the future research trends and prospects of this medicinal plant are provided. METHODS: The Chinese and English papers related to TFSB were collected from the PubMed and CNKI databases using the relevant keywords. To highlight the pharmacological mechanism, clinical application, and safety of TFSB, the collected articles were screened and classified based on their research content. RESULTS: TFSB contains at least 100 different kinds of flavonoids, of which baicalin, baicalein, wogonin, wogonoside, scutellarin, and scutellarein are the main active ingredients. The preparation process of TFSB is relatively well established, and the extraction rate can be significantly increased by enzymatic pretreatment and ultrasonication. The low oral availability of TFSB may be effectively enhanced using nanoformulations. The available pharmacokinetic data show that flavonoid glycosides and aglycones with the same parent nucleus may be converted to structures that are conducive to absorption in vivo. Moreover, TFSB can protect against CVDs by inhibiting apoptosis, regulating oxidative stress response, participating in inflammatory response, protecting against myocardial fibrosis, inhibiting myocardial hypertrophy, and regulating blood vessels. In terms of clinical application and animal safety, the available studies show that TFSB can be applied in a wide range of clinical treatments and is safe to use is animals. CONCLUSION: This article systematically reviews the therapeutic effect and underlying pharmacological mechanism of TFSB against CVDs. The available studies clearly suggest that TFSB has great potential for the treatment of CVDs and is worthy of in-depth research and development.

ABSTRACT

Chinese medicinal materials are the precious resources of China and favored by patients at home and abroad because of their natural sources and curative effects. Pesticides are often used to prevent and control diseases and insect pests and regulate the growth of Chinese medicinal plants, so as to improve the yield and quality of Chinese medicinal materials. Most of the pesticides can play a role in pest control through systemic action, stomach toxicity, contact, fumigation and other ways, especially the systemic pesticides can kill hidden pests by entering the Chinese medicinal plants. Despite the good pest control effect, it is difficult to remove the systemic pesticides by simple cleaning, which poses a great risk to the safety of Chinese medicinal materials. At the same time, excessive or non-standard use of pesticides leads to serious pesticide residues in Chinese medicinal materials, which affects not only the quality and efficacy of the materials and harm human health but also the international development of Chinese medicinal materials industry. Pesticide residues have become a bottleneck affecting the industry development and hindering the export of Chinese medicinal materials. Therefore, it is of great significance to study how to quickly, sensitively, and accurately detect and remove pesticide residues in Chinese medicinal materials. We reviewed the common pesticide residues in Chinese medicinal materials in recent years in terms of characteristics, harm, and detection and removal techniques, and discussed the future development of the detection and removal deve-lopment. With this review, we aimed to provide a reference for the quality control of Chinese medicinal materials and promote the healthy development of Chinese medicine industry.

ABSTRACT

Gut microbiota and nutrition play major roles in honey bee health. Recent reports have shown that pesticides can disrupt the gut microbiota and cause malnutrition in honey bees. Carbendazim is the most commonly used fungicide in China, but it is not clear whether carbendazim negatively affects the gut microbes and nutrient intake levels in honey bees. To address this research gap, we assessed the effects of carbendazim on the survival, pollen consumption, and sequenced 16 S rRNA gene to determine the bacterial composition in the midgut and hindgut. Our results suggest that carbendazim exposure does not cause acute death in honey bees even at high concentrations (5000 mg/L), which are extremely unlikely to exist under field conditions. Carbendazim does not disturb the microbiome composition in the gut of young worker bees during gut microbial colonization and adult worker bees with established gut communities in the mid and hindgut. However, carbendazim exposure significantly decreases pollen consumption in honey bees. Thus, exposure of bees to carbendazim can perturb their beneficial nutrition homeostasis, potentially reducing honey bee immunity and increasing their susceptibility to infection by pathogens, which influence effectiveness as pollinators, even colony health.

Information on the association between tea drinking and semen quality is limited. Little is reported on whether tea drinking is benefit to sperm quality. This cross-sectional and longitudinal study was conducted between April 2017 and July 2018. Participants were healthy men who were screened as potential sperm donors recruited at the Hubei Province Human Sperm Bank of China. A structured questionnaires containing sociodemographic information, daily habits, sperm collection-related information was completed for each participant at interview. Repeated semen samples were taken to examine the sperm parameters, including sperm volume, sperm concentration, sperm count, progressive motility, and total motility. A total of 1385 men with 6466 sperm samples were included in this study. Two groups were compared: tea drinking men (389, 28.1%) and non-tea drinking men (996, 71.9%). Compared with subjects who never drink tea, the analyses showed that sperm concentration and total sperm count were higher in tea-consuming subjects. A 10-year period or more duration of tea drinking significantly increased semen concentrations by 16.27% (P < 0.05). Sperm concentration was increased in subjects with a frequency of tea drinking of 3 days or more per week (P < 0.05) or, among men who were occasional alcohol drinkers, when tea concentration was weak (P < 0.05). No evidence of trend effects (P for trend > 0.05) or interaction effects (P for interaction > 0.05) between tea consumption and sperm quality, respectively. Our findings provide evidence that tea drinking may improve male reproductive health. Long-term, frequent, weak tea drinking tends to increase sperm quality among men with low BMI or health-related behaviors like smoking or alcohol intake.

ABSTRACT

Colorectal cancer is one of the most commonly occurring cancers worldwide. Although clinical reports have indicated the anticancer effects of Chinese herbal medicine, the multiple underlying molecular and biochemical mechanisms of action remain to be fully characterized. Chinese medicine (CM) monomers, which are the active components of CM, serve as the material basis of the functional mechanisms of CM. The aim of this review is to summarize the current experimental evidence from in vitro, in vivo, and clinical studies for the effects of CM monomers in colorectal cancer prevention and treatment, providing some useful references for future research.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Unstable angina pectoris (UAP) is the common type of coronary heart disease with the risk of developing into acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Currently, there are still numerous patients suffering from recurrent angina after revascularization or conventional medication due to the microvascular lesions, endothelial dysfunction, chronic inflammation, in-stent restenosis, and other factors. As an important part of China's medical and health care system, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has rich clinical experience in the treatment of UAP. According to the theory of TCM, Yang deficiency and blood stasis syndrome is a common type of UAP. Wen Xin decoction, as a type of Chinese herbal medicine, has been used in the clinic for years and shown great efficacy in the treatment of UAP with Yang deficiency and blood stasis syndrome. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Wen Xin granular in patients with UAP. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This is a double-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial. A total of 502 participants will be randomly allocated to the intervention group and the placebo group. Based on conventional medication, the intervention group will be treated with Wen Xin granular and the placebo group will be treated with Wen Xin granular placebo. The primary outcomes are major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). Assessments will be performed 1 year after the treatment. The secondary outcomes include TCM symptom scale score, Seattle angina questionnaire, and thromboelastography. Assessments will be performed at baseline (before randomization) and 4 and 8 weeks after randomization. DISCUSSION: This trial will provide high-quality data on the benefits and risks of Wen Xin granular in patients with UAP. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT04661709 . ABSTRACT

Chinese medicinals feature different medicinal parts and enriched components, which makes their powders show obvious microscopic identification characteristics and specific physical properties. On this basis, the commonly used Chinese medicinals can be divided into several categories, such as powdery, fibrous, sugar, oil, and brittle materials, which is of great importance to the research and development of personalized Chinese medicinal preparation technology. However, the existing classification methods are highly subjective and thus difficult to meet the requirements for the development of personalized Chinese medicinal preparations with high quality. In this study, 55 representative Chinese medicinals, such as Dioscoreae Rhizoma and Leonuri Herba, were selected, and the physical properties of their powders were systematically characterized by comprehensive powder tester, torque rheometer, texture analyzer, etc., based on which a data set encompassing physical properties of these powders was built. The typical physical fingerprints of powders from the above 5 categories were established by multivariate statistical analysis. Then, the Chinese medicinals were classified according to the Euclidean distance between each of them and the typical value in the PCA score plot. For those with multiple material properties, whose classification boundary was fuzzy, the proportions of different types of materials were calculated with the combination of Euclidean distance, powder properties, microscopic identification characteristics, and chemical composition, so as to achieve the multivariate quantitative classification of Chinese medicinals. This lays the foundation for the further creation of intelligent personalized Chinese medicinal preparation technology.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship of the classification of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) materials with the suitable binder concentration and dosage in the preparation of personalized water-paste pills and establish a model for predicting the binder concentration and dosage. Five representative TCM materials were selected, followed by mixture uniform design. The water-paste pills were prepared by extrusion and spheronization with hypromellose E5(HPMC E5) as the binder. The quality of intermediates and final products was evaluated, and the resulting data were subjected to multivariate statistical analysis. The prediction models for binder concentration and dosage were established as follows: binder concentration: Y_1=0.378 6 + 0.570 1X_A + 2.271 2X_B-0.894 5X_C-0.458 2X_D-1.145 4X_E(when Y_1 < 0, 10% HPMC E5 was required; when Y_1 > 0, 20% HPMC E5 was required), with the accuracy reaching up to 100%; binder dosage: Y_2=32.38 + 0.25X_A + 1.85X_B-0.013X_B~2-0.002 5X_C~2(R~2=0.932 6, P < 0.001). The results showed that the binder concentration and dosage were correlated positively with the proportion of fiber material but negatively with the proportions of sugar material and brittle material. Then the validation experiments were conducted with the prediction models and all the prescriptions could be successfully prepared at one time. These demonstrated that following the classification of TCM materials and the calculation of their proportions in the prescription, the established mathematical model could be adopted for predicting the binder concentration and dosage required in the preparation of personalized water-paste pills, which contributed to reducing the pre-formulation research and guiding the actual production of personalized water-paste pills.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the most common cancer worldwide. Anthracyclines, alone or in combination with other chemotherapeutic agents, are the most effective chemotherapy agents against breast cancer. However, the dose-dependent cardiotoxicity of anthracyclines is a serious drawback in clinical treatment. Considerable efforts have been made to establish suggestions to avoid anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity. Crocin extracted from saffron has potential cardioprotective effects against anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity. The aim of this study was to estimate the cardioprotective effects and safety of saffron total glycoside tablets relative to placebo in patients with breast cancer undergoing anthracycline-based chemotherapy. METHODS: This is a multicentre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial. A sample of 200 participants (100 per group) with breast cancer will be randomly assigned to receive either saffron total glycoside tablet or placebo (four tablets each time, three times each day) for 6 months. Each participant will be interviewed three times: baseline (visit 1), after 3 months (visit 2), and after 6 months (visit 3). The primary outcome is to confirm if administration of saffron total glycoside tablets reduces the rate of cardiotoxicity relative to that with placebo. Secondary outcomes include new arrhythmic events, and cardiac troponin I and N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide levels. The quantity, quality, and severity of the adverse events will be carefully documented. DISCUSSION: We look forward to obtaining high-quality evidence that can be used to formulate clinical practice guidelines. Thus, the findings of this study are expected to help fill the current gap in cardiotoxicity prevention drugs. ABSTRACT

Individual-based morphological brain networks built from T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) reflect synchronous maturation intensities between anatomical regions at the individual level. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a socio-cognitive and neurodevelopmental disorder with high neuroanatomical heterogeneity, but the specific patterns of morphological networks in ASD remain largely unexplored at the individual level. In this study, individual-based morphological networks were constructed by using high-resolution structural MRI data from 40 young children with ASD (age range: 2-8 years) and 38 age-, gender-, and handedness-matched typically developing children (TDC). Measurements were recorded as threefold. Results showed that compared with TDC, young children with ASD exhibited lower values of small-worldness (i.e., σ) of individual-level morphological brain networks, increased morphological connectivity in cortico-striatum-thalamic-cortical (CSTC) circuitry, and decreased morphological connectivity in the cortico-cortical network. In addition, morphological connectivity abnormalities can predict the severity of social communication deficits in young children with ASD, thus confirming an associational impact at the behavioral level. These findings suggest that the morphological brain network in the autistic developmental brain is inefficient in segregating and distributing information. The results also highlight the crucial role of abnormal morphological connectivity patterns in the socio-cognitive deficits of ASD and support the possible use of the aberrant developmental patterns of morphological brain networks in revealing new clinically-relevant biomarkers for ASD.

ABSTRACT

The increasing burden of cardiovascular disease in China has become a major public health problem, and the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease is in urgent need. For the reality of integrated Chinese and Western medicine in the Chinese health care system, we can consider the service ability of traditional Chinese medicine. Xueshuan Xinmaining Tablet is a kind of Chinese patent medicine commonly used in the treatment of recovery stage of ischemic stroke and angina pectoris of coronary heart disease. Based on the data of hospitalized patients covered by national urban basic medical insurance of China Medical Insurance Research Association in 2013, this study evaluated the treatment cost and detailed composition of the cost for the patients with cerebral infarction and coronary heart disease treated by Xueshuan Xinmaining Tablets. At the same time, the differences in disease burden and direct medical expenses among Xueshuan Xinmaining Tablets group, Western medicine group and another commonly used Chinese patent medicine group were analyzed. Among the three groups of patients with cerebral infarction and coronary heart disease, the hospitalization rates caused by various causes(44.4% and 29.6%) and diseases(20.8% and 5.2%) in Xueshuan Xinmaining Tablets group were the lowest(all P<0.01), and the number of hospitalization times in half a year was highest in the common Chinese patent medicine group(all P<0.01). In patients with cerebral infarction, the median annual total outpatient expenses were 7 476.8, 7 601.8, 15 650.1 yuan respectively in Western medicine group, Xueshuan Xinmaining Tablets group and the common Chinese patent medicine group(P<0.01), and the median hospitalization expenses were 11 620.2, 14 988.9, 13 325.6 yuan respectively(P=0.058). In patients with coronary heart disease, the total outpatient expenses of the three groups were 6 831.4, 10 228.6, 13 132.4 yuan respectively(P<0.01), and the total hospitalization expenses were 13 354.7, 14 911.5, 15 725.3 yuan respectively(P=0.134). The results showed that in patients with cerebral infarction and coronary heart disease, the hospitalization rate was lowest in Xueshuan Xinmaining Tablets group, beneficial to the turnover of hospital beds and full use of hospital medical resources. The total annual outpatient cost of Xueshuan Xinmaining Tablets group was lower than that of common Chinese patent medicine group, beneficial to reduce the burden of disease.

BACKGROUND: Essential elements such as iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), selenium (Se), rubidium (Rb), strontium (Sr), and molybdenum (Mo) are necessary for reproductive health. However, their associations with human semen quality remain inconclusive. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the associations of urinary Fe, Co, Cu, Zn, Se, Rb, Sr, and Mo concentrations with semen quality in healthy men screened as potential sperm donors and identify critical windows of susceptibility. METHODS: 1428 healthy men provided 3766 urine and 6527 semen samples, which were measured for urinary essential element concentrations and sperm quality parameters, respectively. Linear mixed models and cubic spline curves were used to evaluate associations between urinary essential elements and semen quality. Multiple informant models were used to identify potential critical windows of susceptibility. RESULTS: Linear mixed models and cubic spline curves showed positive dose-response relationships between urinary Zn and sperm concentration and total count and between urinary Mo and total sperm count [all False Discovery Rate (FDR) adjusted p-value for trend < 0.05]. In the multiple-element linear mixed models, the men in the highest versus lowest quartiles of urinary Zn and Mo had a higher sperm concentration of 17.5% (95% CI: 2.8%, 34.2%; p-value for trend = 0.006) and total sperm count of 18.3% (95% CI: 1.4%, 38.0%; p-value for trend = 0.027), respectively. Urinary Zn was also positively associated with total sperm count in a dose-dependent manner (p-value for trend = 0.036), though the percentile difference in total sperm count between men in the highest and lowest quartile was not statistically significant (16.4%, 95% CI: -1.7%, 37.9%). These associations appeared to be stronger when urinary Zn and Mo were measured at 0-9 days before the date of semen examination (i.e., corresponding to epididymal storage). CONCLUSIONS: Higher urinary Zn and Mo, particularly during the period of epididymal storage, were associated with greater sperm production.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests thalamus is a key "information relay" center and all cortical areas receive inputs from the thalamus and each of the main nuclei of thalamus connects a single one or a few cortical areas. The traditional "winner-takes-all" thalamus parcellation method was then proposed based on this assumption. However, this method is based on the structural segments of the cortex which is not suitable for the functional parcellation of the thalamus. METHOD: Here we proposed a dual-segment method for thalamus functional parcellation based on the resting-state fMRI data. The traditional "winner-takes-all" and the proposed dual-segment methods were both applied to the dataset of 76 healthy controls (HCs) and 34 subjects with autism spectrum disorder. RESULTS: The results showed that the thalamus was subdivided into two sub-regions by using the dual-segment method: one is located in the dorsomedial part of thalamus which connects the high-level cognitive cortical regions; the other is located in the ventrolateral part of thalamus which connects the low-level sensory cortical areas. The functional connectivity strength between thalamus sub-regions and the corresponding cortical regions based on the dual-segment method was higher than that of results from the traditional "winner-takes-all" method. The thalamo-cortical functional connectivity based on our proposed method also showed higher classification ability to distinguish subjects with autism spectrum disorder from HCs. CONCLUSION: Our study will provide a new method for functional thalamus parcellation which might help understand the sub-regions functions of thalamus in neuroscience studies.
