ABSTRACT

Thanks to the advancements in bioinformatics, drugs, and other interventions that modulate microbes to treat diseases have been emerging continuously. In recent years, an increasing number of databases related to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) or gut microbes have been established. However, a database combining the two has not yet been developed. To accelerate TCM research and address the traditional medicine and micro ecological system connection between short board, we have developed the most comprehensive micro-ecological database of TCM. This initiative includes the standardization of the following advantages: (1) A repeatable process achieved through the standardization of a retrieval strategy to identify literature. This involved identifying 419 experiment articles from PubMed and six authoritative databases; (2) High-quality data integration achieved through double-entry extraction of literature, mitigating uncertainties associated with natural language extraction; (3) Implementation of a similar strategy aiding in the prediction of mechanisms of action. Leveraging drug similarity, target entity similarity, and known drug-target entity association, our platform enables the prediction of the effects of a new herb or acupoint formulas using the existing data. In total, MicrobeTCM includes 171 diseases, 725 microbes, 1468 herb-formulas, 1032 herbs, 15780 chemical compositions, 35 acupoint-formulas, and 77 acupoints. ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Tui Na (Chinese massage) is a relatively simple, inexpensive, and non-invasive intervention, and has been used to treat stroke patients for many years in China. Tui Na acts on specific parts of the body which are called meridians and acupoints to achieve the role of treating diseases. Yet the underlying neural mechanism associated with Tui Na is not clear due to the lack of detection methods. OBJECTIVE: Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) was used to explore the changes of sensorimotor cortical neural activity in patients with upper limb motor dysfunction of stroke and healthy control groups during Tui Na Hegu Point. METHODS: Ten patients with unilateral upper limb motor dysfunction after stroke and eight healthy subjects received Tui Na. fNIRS was used to record the hemodynamic data in the sensorimotor cortex and the changes in blood flow were calculated based on oxygenated hemoglobin (Oxy-Hb), the task session involved repetitive Tui Na on Hegu acupoint, using a block design [six cycles: rest (20 seconds); Tui Na (20 seconds); rest (30 seconds)]. The changes in neural activity in sensorimotor cortex could be inferred according to the principle of neurovascular coupling, and the number of activated channels in the bilateral hemisphere was used to calculate the lateralization index. RESULT: 1. For hemodynamic response induced by Hegu acupoint Tui Na, a dominant increase in the contralesional primary sensorimotor cortex during Hegu point Tui Na of the less affected arm in stroke patients was observed, as well as that in healthy controls, while this contralateral pattern was absent during Hegu point Tui Na of the affected arm in stroke patients. 2. Concerning the lateralization index in stroke patients, a significant difference was observed between lateralization index values for the affected arm and the less affected arm (P < 0.05). Wilcoxon tests showed a significant difference between lateralization index values for the affected arm in stroke patients and lateralization index values for the dominant upper limb in healthy controls (P < 0.05), and no significant difference between lateralization index values for the less affected arm in stroke patients and that in healthy controls (P = 0.36). CONCLUSION: The combination of Tui Na and fNIRS has the potential to reflect the functional status of sensorimotor neural circuits. The changes of neuroactivity in the sensorimotor cortex when Tui Na Hegu acupoint indicate that there is a certain correlation between acupoints in traditional Chinese medicine and neural circuits.

ABSTRACT

The prevalence of neurodegenerative, cerebrovascular, and psychiatric diseases and other neurological disorders has increased dramatically worldwide. Fucoxanthin is an algal pigment with many biological functions, and there is rising evidence that fucoxanthin plays a preventive and therapeutic role in neurological disorders. This review focuses on the metabolism, bioavailability, and blood-brain barrier penetration of fucoxanthin. Furthermore, the neuroprotective potential of fucoxanthin in neurodegenerative diseases, cerebrovascular diseases, and psychiatric diseases as well as other neurological disorders such as epilepsy, neuropathic pain, and brain tumors by acting on multiple targets will be summarized. The multiple targets include regulating apoptosis, reducing oxidative stress, activating the autophagy pathway, inhibiting Aß aggregation, improving dopamine secretion, reducing α-synuclein aggregation, attenuating neuroinflammation, modulating gut microbiota, and activating brain-derived neurotrophic factor, etc. Additionally, we look forward to brain-targeted oral transport systems due to the low bioavailability and blood-brain barrier permeability of fucoxanthin. We also propose exploring the systemic mechanisms of fucoxanthin metabolism and transport through the gut-brain process and envision new therapeutic targets for fucoxanthin to act on the central nervous system. Finally, we propose dietary fucoxanthin delivery interventions to achieve preventive effects on neurological disorders. This review provides a reference for the application of fucoxanthin in the neural field.

ABSTRACT

Upper limb motor dysfunction after stroke is a serious threat to the living quality of patients and their families. Recovery of upper limb motor function after stroke largely relies on the activation and remodeling of neural circuits. rTMS (repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation) has been proved to promote the reconstruction of neural synapses and neural circuits. However, there are still a large number of patients who cannot fully recover and leave behind varying degrees of dysfunction. Considering the systemic pathology after stroke, in addition to focal brain injury, stroke can also cause extensive dysfunction of peripheral organs. The rehabilitation strategy for stroke should combine the treatment of primary brain lesions with the intervention of secondary systemic damage. The aim of this trial is to verify the efficacy of rTMS synergize with Tui Na (Chinese Massage) on upper limb motor function after ischemic stroke, and to explore the mechanism of activation and remodeling of sensorimotor neural circuits with functional near-infrared spectroscopy. Ninety patients will be randomly assigned to either rTMS + Tui Na + conventional rehabilitation group (the experimental group) or rTMS + conventional rehabilitation group (the control group) in 1:1 ratio. Intervention is conducted five sessions a week, with a total of twenty sessions. The primary outcome is Fugl-Meyer Assessment, and the secondary outcomes include Muscle Strength, Modified Ashworth Assessment, Modified Barthel Index Assessment, motor evoked potentials and functional near-infrared spectroscopy. There are four time points for the evaluation, including baseline, 2 weeks and 4 weeks after the start of treatment, and 4 weeks after the end of treatment. This study is a randomized controlled trial. This study was approved by Institutional Ethics Committee of Shanghai Third Rehabilitation Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (approval No. SH3RH-2021-EC-012) on December, 16th, 2021. The protocol was registered with Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR2200056266), on February 3th, 2022. Patient recruitment was initiated on February 10th, 2022, and the study will be continued until December 2023.

ABSTRACT

Constitution refers to the comprehensive and relatively stable characteristics of the genetic or acquired morphological structure, physiological function, and psychological state in the process of human individual life. A special metabolomics data processing method is established to find the unique m/z value of each constitution. Combined with the random forest decision tree algorithm, the discrimination model of 9 constitutions in traditional Chinese medicine is constructed, and the model is verified and tested. The test results show that the classification accuracy of each constitution is higher than 80%, indicating that the model can well identify nine constitutions of traditional Chinese medicine. The classification accuracy is related to the difficulty of distinguishing between constitutions. In a word, this study provides a fast and accurate method to distinguish the constitution of traditional Chinese medicine, provides an objective representation for the classification and judgment of clinical constitution of traditional Chinese medicine, and provides a scientific basis for the modernization of traditional Chinese medicine.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To explore the research hotspot and frontier direction of TCM nursing of insomnia and provide reference for the follow-up study of the optimal scheme of TCM nursing of insomnia. Background: Insomnia is a common sleep-wake disorder, affects 6-10% of adults and was associated with independent higher risks of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. TCM Nursing Techniques of insomnia has a long history and has shown a definite impact. However, it's still lack of analysis in the field of the most commonly used and effective techniques, as well as the co-morbidities associated with insomnia. Therefore, the database was searched and analyzed to find effective TCM Nursing Techniques for insomnia and related diseases related to insomnia. Method: Randomized controlled trials on the intervention of TCM Nursing Techniques in insomnia were retrieved from Web of Science Core Collection and imported into CiteSpace 5.6.R5 visualization software. The works of literature were co-cited by keywords authors and institutions for visual analysis, and the co-morbidities associated with insomnia of TCM Nursing Techniques in literature was extracted manually. The symptoms of co-morbidities associated with insomnia were imported into Cytoscape 3.9.0 software and clustered by CytoHubba. Result: As of October 20, 2021, the literature published in the last 20 years from Web of Science Core Collection was screened, and the publication period of the included literature was from 2004 to 2021. From 2016 to now, the total number of articles has been increasing. A total of 146 articles were included, and the highest production year was 2020. There is little cooperation between states, institutions, and authors. China (including Hong Kong and Taiwan) and Hong Kong Polytech University are leading countries and institutions in this area. MYUNGHAENG HUR is the most cited author, and J ALTERN COMPLEM MED is the most cited journal. According to cluster analysis and keyword frequency, auricular therapy, aromatherapy, and acupressure are the three most commonly used techniques. While the top five co-morbidities are fatigue, anxiety, depression, pain and hemodialysis. The three frontier topics and the main research directions are sleep quality, comorbid insomnia and clinical trial design. Conclusion: We found that acupressure, aromatherapy, and auricular acupoint therapy are the most commonly used nursing methods of TCM to intervene in insomnia. However, these studies have limitations such as small sample size, lack of objectivity in evaluating sleep quality, and high heterogeneity of intervention measures, which are not conducive to forming TCM clinical nursing guidelines. Therefore, it is necessary to adopt objectified sleep quality evaluation methods, select suitable acupoints according to TCM theories, and design multi-center large-sample clinical trials based on the safety principle of randomized blind control. This study provides an in-depth perspective for insomnia research on TCM Nursing Techniques and includes information for follow-up research on TCM Nursing Techniques of insomnia.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of adjuvant transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) plus tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) treatment in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with a high risk of early recurrence after curative resection. Patients and Methods: Patients from multiple centres were divided into postoperative adjuvant TACE with (n=57) or without (n=142) TKI administration groups. The disease-free survival (DFS) curve was depicted by the Kaplan-Meier method, and the difference between the two groups was tested using the log rank test. Univariate and multivariate Cox analyses were performed to identify independent risk factors for DFS. Additionally, three propensity score analyses were performed to minimise the potential confounding factors to facilitate a more reliable conclusion. Adverse events (AEs) were assessed according to the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events, version 4.0. Results: The 1-and 2-year DFS rates of the TACE plus TKI treatment group were 45.5% and 34.9%, respectively, which were significantly better than those of the TACE alone group (26.8% and 18.3%, respectively). Multivariate analysis identified adjuvant TACE plus TKI treatment as an independent prognostic factor for DFS (hazard ratio: 0.611, 95% confidence interval: 0.408-0.915, P=0.017). Further analysis based on the various propensity score methods yielded similar results. Subgroup analysis showed that patients with tumour diameter ≥5 cm, tumour number <3, absence of hepatic vein tumour thrombus and bile duct tumour thrombus, ruptured tumours, and stage IIIB could benefit more from TACE plus TKI treatment (all P<0.05). Some patients (33.33%) experienced grade ≥3 AEs in the TACE plus TKI group. Conclusion: TACE plus TKI treatment can reduce the incidence of early recurrence with tolerable adverse events in HCC patients at high risk of recurrence after hepatectomy and may be an appropriate option in postoperative anti-recurrence treatment.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Tongue coating has been used as an effective signature of health in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The level of greasy coating closely relates to the strength of dampness or pathogenic qi in TCM theory. Previous empirical studies and our systematic review have shown the relation between greasy coating and various diseases, including gastroenteropathy, coronary heart disease, and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, the objective and intelligent greasy coating and related diseases recognition methods are still lacking. The construction of the artificial intelligent tongue recognition models may provide important syndrome diagnosis and efficacy evaluation methods, and contribute to the understanding of ethnopharmacological mechanisms based on TCM theory. AIM OF THE STUDY: The present study aimed to develop an artificial intelligent model for greasy tongue coating recognition and explore its application in COVID-19. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Herein, we developed greasy tongue coating recognition networks (GreasyCoatNet) using convolutional neural network technique and a relatively large (N = 1486) set of tongue images from standard devices. Tests were performed using both cross-validation procedures and a new dataset (N = 50) captured by common cameras. Besides, the accuracy and time efficiency comparisons between the GreasyCoatNet and doctors were also conducted. Finally, the model was transferred to recognize the greasy coating level of COVID-19. RESULTS: The overall accuracy in 3-level greasy coating classification with cross-validation was 88.8% and accuracy on new dataset was 82.0%, indicating that GreasyCoatNet can obtain robust greasy coating estimates from diverse datasets. In addition, we conducted user study to confirm that our GreasyCoatNet outperforms TCM practitioners, yet only consuming roughly 1% of doctors' examination time. Critically, we demonstrated that GreasyCoatNet, along with transfer learning, can construct more proper classifier of COVID-19, compared to directly training classifier on patient versus control datasets. We, therefore, derived a disease-specific deep learning network by finetuning the generic GreasyCoatNet. CONCLUSIONS: Our framework may provide an important research paradigm for differentiating tongue characteristics, diagnosing TCM syndrome, tracking disease progression, and evaluating intervention efficacy, exhibiting its unique potential in clinical applications.

BACKGROUND: Changes in the composition and diversity of gut microbiota, which can be altered by autonomic nerve activity, contribute to the development of heart failure (HF). Renal denervation (RDN) can improve cardiac function by reducing sympathetic nerve activity. However, whether the beneficial role of RDN on HF is related to gut microbiota is unknown. METHODS: Thirty rats were assigned to a control, HF (with induced transverse aortic constriction (TAC)), RDN (with RDN induced 10 weeks after TAC), Nog (HF rats with Nogo-P4-administered 8 weeks after RDN), and NEP (HF rats with NEP1-40-administered 8 weeks after RDN) group. Then, 16SrRNA amplicon sequencing and analyses of fecal samples were performed. RESULTS: Beta diversity analyses revealed that compared to the HF group, the RDN, Nog, and NEP groups clustered closer to the control group. The Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio was reduced in the HF group (1.59) compared with the control group (3.21) and was significantly decreased compared to the Nog (7.19), RDN (6.20), and NEP (4.42) groups. At the genus level, the HF group showed decreased abundances of Lactobacillus and Alistipes and increased abundances of Bacteroides and Clostridium compared with the control group. The abundances of Lactobacillus and Alistipes were increased, and those of Bacteroides and Clostridium were decreased in the RDN, Nog, and NEP groups compared to the HF group. However, no differences were observed between the three groups that underwent RDN. The microbial function showed the same tendency. CONCLUSIONS: RDN reversed the abnormal changes in the gut microbiome in HF rats. Inhibition of reinnervation after RDN did not affect intestinal bacteria.

ABSTRACT

Considerable literature has been published on polysaccharides, which play a critical role in regulating the pathogenesis of inflammation and immunity. In this essay, the anti-inflammatory effect of Mytilus coruscus polysaccharide (MP) on lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW264.7 cells and a dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced ulcerative colitis model in mice was investigated. The results showed that MP effectively promoted the proliferation of RAW264.7 cells, ameliorated the excessive production of inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-10), and inhibited the activation of the NF-κB signaling pathway. For DSS-induced colitis in mice, MP can improve the clinical symptoms of colitis, inhibit the weight loss of mice, reduce the disease activity index, and have a positive effect on the shortening of the colon caused by DSS, meliorating intestinal barrier integrity and lowering inflammatory cytokines in serum. Moreover, MP makes a notable contribution to the richness and diversity of the intestinal microbial community, and also regulates the structural composition of the intestinal flora. Specifically, mice treated with MP showed a repaired Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio and an increased abundance of some probiotics like Anaerotruncus, Lactobacillus, Desulfovibrio, Alistipe, Odoribacter, and Enterorhabdus in colon. These data suggest that the MP could be a promising dietary candidate for enhancing immunity and protecting against ulcerative colitis.

BACKGROUND: The potential effect of alcohol or tea intake on the risk of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) remains controversial. METHODS: In a population-based case-control study in southern China, we assessed alcohol or tea intake from 2,441 histopathologically confirmed NPC cases and 2,546 controls. We calculated mean daily ethanol (g/day) and tea intake (mL/day). Fully adjusted ORs with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated using logistic regression; potential dose-response trends were evaluated using restricted cubic spline analysis. RESULTS: Compared with nondrinkers, no significantly increased NPC risk in men was observed among current alcohol drinkers overall (OR, 1.08; 95% CI, 0.93-1.25), nor among current heavy drinkers (OR for ≥90 g/day ethanol vs. none, 1.32; 95% CI, 0.95-1.84) or former alcohol drinkers. Current tea drinking was associated with a decreased NPC risk (OR, 0.73; 95% CI, 0.64-0.84). Compared with never drinkers, those with the low first three quintiles of mean daily current intake of tea were at significantly lower NPC risk (OR, 0.53, 0.68, and 0.65, respectively), but not significant for the next two quintiles. Current daily tea intake had a significant nonlinear dose-response relation with NPC risk. CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests no significant association between alcohol and NPC risk. Tea drinking may moderately reduce NPC risk, but the lack of a monotonic dose-response association complicates causal inference. IMPACT: Tea drinking might be a healthy habit for preventing NPC. More studies on biological mechanisms that may link tea with NPC risk are needed.

ABSTRACT

Tongue diagnosis plays a pivotal role in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for thousands of years. As one of the most important tongue characteristics, tooth-marked tongue is related to spleen deficiency and can greatly contribute to the symptoms differentiation and treatment selection. Yet, the tooth-marked tongue recognition for TCM practitioners is subjective and challenging. Most of the previous studies have concentrated on subjectively selected features of the tooth-marked region and gained accuracy under 80%. In the present study, we proposed an artificial intelligence framework using deep convolutional neural network (CNN) for the recognition of tooth-marked tongue. First, we constructed relatively large datasets with 1548 tongue images captured by different equipments. Then, we used ResNet34 CNN architecture to extract features and perform classifications. The overall accuracy of the models was over 90%. Interestingly, the models can be successfully generalized to images captured by other devices with different illuminations. The good effectiveness and generalization of our framework may provide objective and convenient computer-aided tongue diagnostic method on tracking disease progression and evaluating pharmacological effect from a informatics perspective.

Fusarium wilt of banana caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Foc) is a disastrous soil-borne fungal disease. Foc tropical race 4 (Foc TR4) can infect almost all banana cultivars. Until now, there is a shortage of safety and effective control methods and commercial banana cultivars with a resistance against Foc TR4. Biocontrol using environmentally friendly microbes is a promising strategy for the management of Foc TR4. Here, a strain 5-10, newly isolated from a medicinal plant (Curculigo capitulata), exhibited a high antifungal activity against Foc TR4. Combing the morphological characteristics and molecular identification, strain 5-10 was classified as a Streptomyces genus. The sequenced genome revealed that more than 39 gene clusters were involved in the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites. Some multidrug resistance gene clusters were also identified such as mdtD, vatB, and vgaE. To improve the anti-Foc TR4 activity of the strain 5-10 extracts, an optimization method of fermentation broth was established. Antifungal activity increased by 72.13% under the fermentation system containing 2.86 g/L of NaCl and 11.57% of inoculation amount. After being treated with the strain 5-10 extracts, the Foc TR4 hyphae shrinked, deformed, and ruptured. The membrane integrity and cell ultrastructure incurred irreversible damage. Streptomyces sp. 5-10 extracts play a fungicidal role in Foc TR4. Hence, Streptomyces sp. 5-10 will be a potential biocontrol agent to manage fungal diseases by exploring the microbial fertilizer.

BACKGROUND: An association between a nonmedicinal herbal diet and nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) has often been hypothesized but never thoroughly investigated. METHODS: This study enrolled a total of 2469 patients with incident NPC and 2559 population controls from parts of Guangdong and Guangxi Provinces in southern China between 2010 and 2014. Questionnaire information was collected on the intake of traditional herbal tea and herbal soup as well as the specific herbal plants used in soups and other potentially confounding lifestyle factors. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the NPC risk in association with herbal tea and soup intake. RESULTS: Ever consumption of herbal tea was not associated with NPC risk (OR, 1.03; 95% CI, 0.91-1.17). An inverse association was observed for NPC among ever drinkers of herbal soup (OR, 0.78; 95% CI, 0.67-0.90) but without any monotonic trend with an increasing frequency or duration of herbal soup consumption. Inverse associations with NPC risk were detected with 9 herbal plants used in herbal soup, including Ziziphus jujuba, Fructus lycii, Codonopsis pilosula, Astragalus membranaceus, Semen coicis, Smilax glabra, Phaseolus calcaratus, Morinda officinalis, and Atractylodes macrocephala (OR range, 0.31-0.79). CONCLUSIONS: Consuming herbal soups including specific plants, but not herbal tea, was inversely associated with NPC. If replicated, these results might provide potential for NPC prevention in endemic areas.

ABSTRACT

In-stent restenosis caused by tumor ingrowth is a major problem for patients undergoing stent placement because conventional stents often lack sustainable antitumor capabilities. The aim of this work is to develop a silk fibroin (SF)-based nanofibrous membrane that is loaded with combined-therapy drugs by using electrospinning technologies, which is further coated on a polydioxanone (PDO) stent and used for the treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC). In order to improve treatment effectiveness, a combination of therapeutic drugs, i.e., curcumin (CUR) and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), is dissolved into SF solution and then eletrospun onto the surface of the PDO stent. The morphology, secondary structure, and in vitro drug release profiles of the membranes are characterized. The antitumor efficacy is assessed in vitro and in vivo using a human CRC cell line and normal cells, and tumor-bearing nude mice. In vitro and in vivo studies on the nanofibrous memembrane-coating demonstrate improved antitumor effects for the CUR/5-FU dual drug system which can be attributed to cell cycle arrest in the S phase in association with induced apoptosis in tumor cells by blocking signal transducer and activator of transcription3 (Stat3) and nuclear factor kappa beta (NF-kB) signaling pathways, suggesting potential in the treatment of CRC in the future.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: Previous studies indicate that the anti-hypoxia effects of Tibetan Turnip (Brassica rapa ssp. rapa) were closely related to its characteristic components being p-coumaric acid (CA) and p-coumaric acid­ß­d­glucopyranoside (CAG). Since CAG would be converted to CA in vivo, this study aims to further examine the efficacy and mechanism of CA against pulmonary edema induced by normobaric hypoxia. MAIN METHODS: Male ICR mice were assigned to the normoxia group and several hypoxia groups, given sterile water, CA or dexamethasone orally, once daily for four consecutive days. One hour after the final gavage, mice in the above hypoxia groups were put into the normobaric hypoxia chamber (9.5% O2) for 24 h while mice in normoxia group remained outside the chamber. After hypoxia exposure, lung water content (LWC), pulmonary vascular permeability, the protein content of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), plasma total nitrate/nitrite (NOx) and endothelin-1 (ET-1) content, histological and ultra-microstructure analyses were performed. Expression of occludin was assayed by immunohistochemistry. KEY FINDINGS: In a hypoxic environment of 9.5% O2, mice treated with 100 mg/kg body wt CA had significantly lower LWC and BALF protein content than mice in the hypoxia vehicle group. Meanwhile, mice in CA group showed intact lung blood-gas-barrier, increased levels of plasma total NO, decreased levels of plasma ET-1 and upregulation of occludin expression. SIGNIFICANCE: CA exerts preventive effects against normobaric hypoxic pulmonary edema in mice, its mechanisms involved improving the integrity of the lung barrier, inhibiting oxidative stress and inflammation.

ABSTRACT

This article is aimed to study the response mechanism of Acanthopanax giraldii on different shading intensity to guide its artificial cultivation. The cultivated A. giraldii in Maoxian was used as the research object, set up different shading treatment groups, analyzed photosynthesis, physiology, submicroscopic structure to explore the response mechanism of A. giraldii to different light intensity. Light was the main influencing factor to photosynthetic rate.During morning and afternoon periods,the Pn of the CK group reduced by stomatal limitation and non stomatal limitation factors respectively. While during 14:30-18:30 period, the Pn of A1 and A2 groups reduced by non stomatal limitation factors.LSP, LCP and Rd of A1 and A2 groups were significantly lower than those of CK group;The content of SS and SP of A1 and A2 groups were lower than those of CK group. The content of Pro of CK group were significantly higher than those of group A2.The activities of SOD and POD of them was higher than that of CK group,CAT activity of A1 and POD activity of A2 were relatively higher In their respective free radical scavenging system. Starch grain increased and base grana declined in the chloropalst of those group CK. The study results indicated that response mechanism of different shading conditions of A. giraldii under field cultivation conditions. Its could effectively adapt to environmental changes of the home cultivation,which provided a reference for ensuring yield and quality.

ABSTRACT

Because persistent inflammation may render the nasopharyngeal mucosa susceptible to carcinogenesis, chronic ear-nose-throat (ENT) disease and its treatment might influence the risk of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Existing evidence is, however, inconclusive and often based on methodologically suboptimal epidemiologic studies. In a population-based case-control study in southern China, we enrolled 2,532 persons with NPC and 2,597 controls, aged 20-74 years, from 2010 to 2014. Odds ratios were estimated for associations between NPC risk and history of ENT and related medications. Any history of chronic ENT disease was associated with a 34% increased risk of NPC. Similarly, use of nasal drops or aspirin was associated with approximately doubled risk of NPC. However, in secondary analyses restricted to chronic ENT diseases and related medication use at least 5 years prior to diagnosis/interview, most results were statistically nonsignificant, except a history of uncured ENT diseases, untreated nasal polyps, and earlier age at first diagnosis of ENT disease and first or most recent aspirin use. Overall, these findings suggest that ENT disease and related medication use are most likely early indications rather than causes of NPC, although the possibility of a modestly increased NPC risk associated with these diseases and related medications cannot be excluded.

ABSTRACT

Cardiomyopathy involves changes in the myocardial ultra-structure, hypertrophy, apoptosis, fibrosis and inflammation. Angiotensin II (AngII) stimulates the expression of insulin like-growth factors (IGF-2) and IGF-2 receptor (IGF-2R) in H9c2 cardiomyoblasts and subsequently leads to apoptosis. Estrogen receptors protect cardiomyocytes from apoptosis and fibrosis. Tanshinone IIA (TSN), a main active ingredient from Danshen, has been shown to protect cardiomyocytes from death caused by different stress signals. Estrogen receptor α (ER) is required for the rapid activation of the IGF-1R signaling cascade. This study aimed to investigate whether TSN protected H9c2 cardiomyocytes from AngII-induced activation of IGF-2R pathway and hypertrophy via ERs. We found that AngII caused the reduction in IGF-1R phosphorylation and the elevation of ß-catenin and IGF-2R levels. This was reversed by increasing doses of TSN and of caspase-3 and ERK1/2 phosphorylation mediated by ERs. The phytoestrogen significantly attenuated AngII-induced apoptosis and suppressed the subsequent cardiac remodeling effect. Therefore, TSN reduced the AngII-induced activation of ß-catenin and IGF-2R pathways, apoptosis and cardiac remodeling via ERs in H9c2 cardiomyoblasts.

PURPOSE: To deliver insoluble natural compounds into colon cancer cells in a controlled fashion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Curcumin (CM)-silk fibroin (SF) nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared by solution-enhanced dispersion by supercritical CO2 (SEDS) (20 MPa pressure, 1:2 CM:SF ratio, 1% concentration), and their physicochemical properties, intracellular uptake efficiency, in vitro anticancer effect, toxicity, and mechanisms were evaluated and analyzed. RESULTS: CM-SF NPs (<100 nm) with controllable particle size were prepared by SEDS. CM-SF NPs had a time-dependent intracellular uptake ability, which led to an improved inhibition effect on colon cancer cells. Interestingly, the anticancer effect of CM-SF NPs was improved, while the side effect on normal human colon mucosal epithelial cells was reduced by a concentration of ~10 µg/mL. The anticancer mechanism involves cell-cycle arrest in the G0/G1 and G2/M phases in association with inducing apoptotic cells. CONCLUSION: The natural compound-loaded SF nanoplatform prepared by SEDS indicates promising colon cancer-therapy potential.
