ABSTRACT

To explore the mechanism of Lingguizhugan Decoction in treating hypertension based on network pharmacology and molecular simulation. The active ingredients and potential targets were screened by the Systematic Pharmacological Analysis Platform of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCMSP). Hypertension-related targets were obtained from OMIM and GeneCards databases. Common targets between drug and hypertension were screened in the Venny platform. A protein-protein interaction (PPI) network was constructed in the STRING database using intersection targets. Key targets in PPI network were analyzed by Cytoscape. R language program was used for Gene Ontology (GO) functional annotation and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analysis. Finally, the binding abilities of the main active ingredients to critical targets were verified by molecular simulation. Naringenin, quercetin, kaempferol, and ß-sitosterol in Lingguizhugan Decoction, and potential targets such as STAT3, AKT1, TNF, IL6, JUN, PTGS2, MMP9, CASP3, TP53, and MAPK3, were screened out. KEGG Enrichment analysis revealed that the common targets of Lingguizhugan Decoction and hypertension are mainly involved in the lipid and atherosclerosis signaling pathway, AGE-RAGE signaling pathway in diabetic complications, fluid shear stress and atherosclerosis, and IL17 signaling pathway. The molecular simulation results showed that naringenin-MAPK3, quercetin-MMP9, quercetin-PTGS2, and quercetin-TP53 were the top four in the docking scores. Naringenin-MAPK3 and quercetin-MMP9 were stable, with binding free energies of -27.97 ± 1.41 kcal/mol and -21.15 ± 3.17 kcal/mol, respectively. The possible mechanism of Lingguizhugan Decoction in treating hypertension is characterized of multi-component, multi-target, and multi-pathway.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To observe the clinical effect of electroacupuncture at acupoints of yangming meridians for sarcopenia. METHODS: A total of 60 patients with sarcopenia were randomized into an observation group and a control group, 30 cases in each group. In the control group, conventional nutrition intervention for sarcopenia was adopted. In the observation group, on the basis of the treatment in the control group, acupuncture was applied at bilateral Binao (LI 14), Quchi (LI 11), Zusanli (ST 36), Yanglingquan (GB 34), etc.,ipsilateral Quchi (LI 11) and Zusanli (ST 36) were connected to electroacupuncture, with discontinuous wave, 2 Hz in frequency, 1-10 mA in intensity, 2 times a week, with a interval of 3 days. A total of 12-week treatment was required in the two groups. Before and after treatment, the appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (ASMI), grip strength, 6 m-walking time, body fat percentage and body moisture percentage were observed in the two groups. RESULTS: Compared with those before treatment, after treatment, ASMI and grip strength were increased while 6 m-walking time was shortened in the two groups (P<0.05); body fat percentage was decreased while body moisture percentage was increased in the observation group (P<0.05). After treatment, in the observation group, ASMI, grip strength and body moisture percentage were increased (P<0.05), 6 m-walking time was shortened and body fat percentage was decreased (P<0.05) compared with those in the control group. CONCLUSION: Electroacupuncture at acupoints of yangming meridians can effectively improve the skeletal muscle mass, muscle function, body fat percentage and body moisture percentage in patients with sarcopenia, and make the distribution of muscle and fat more reasonable.

ABSTRACT

As an empirical medicine of traditional Chinese medicine, Fuzhengjiedu Granules have shown an effect against COVID-19 in clinical and inflammatory animal models. It is formulated with eight herbs, including Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, Zingiberis Rhizoma, Glycyrrhizae Radix Et Rhizoma, Lonicerae Japonicae Flos, Gleditsiae Spina, Fici Radix, Pogostemonis Herba, and Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium. This study established a high-performance liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (HPLC-QQQ-MS/MS) method by simultaneously determining 29 active compounds in the granules with significant content differences. Separation by gradient elution using acetonitrile and water (0.1% formic acid) as mobile phases was performed on a Waters Acquilty UPLC T3 column (2.1 mm × 100 mm, 1.7 µm). A triple quadrupole mass spectrometer, operating in positive and negative ionization modes, was used for multiple reaction monitoring to detect the 29 compounds. All calibration curves showed good linear regression (r2 > 0.998). RSDs of precision, reproducibility, and stability of active compounds were all lower than 5.0%. The recovery rates were 95.4-104.9%, with RSDs< 5.0%. This method was successfully used to analyze the samples, and the results showed that 26 representative active components from 8 herbs were detected in the granules. While aconitine, mesaconitine, and hypaconitine were not detected, indicating that the existing samples were safe. The granules had the maximum and minimum content of hesperidin (27.3 ± 0.375 mg/g) and benzoylaconine (38.2 ± 0.759 ng/g). To conclude, a fast, accurate, sensitive, and reliable HPLC-QQQ-MS/MS method was established, which can simultaneously detect 29 active compounds that have a considerable difference in the content of Fuzhengjiedu Granules. This study can be used to control the quality and safety of Fuzhengjiedu Granules and provide a basis and guarantee for further experimental research and clinical application.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative autologous blood donation (PAD) is used for elective surgical procedures with a predictable blood loss. But a downward trend in PAD is due to the fact that patients with preoperative whole blood donation or two-unit red cell apheresis cannot avoid receiving allogenic blood during intensive surgery. To improve the clinical application of PAD, this study explores the feasibility of large-volume autologous red blood cells (RBCs) donation by a pilot trial in a small cohort of Chinese. METHODS: This was a single-center, prospective study and 16 male volunteers were enrolled from May to October in 2020. Each volunteer donated 627.25 ± 109.74 mL (mean ± SD) RBC with apheresis machine or manually, and received 800 mg of intravenous iron in four divided doses. Blood pressure, oxygen saturation (SpO2 ), respiratory rate and heart rate were monitored throughout the procedure. The RBC count, hemoglobin (Hb) concentration, hematocrit (Hct), reticulocyte count, erythropoietin (Epo), serum iron, total iron binding capacity (TIBC), transferrin saturation, transferrin, and ferritin were dynamically detected and analyzed before and 8 weeks after blood donation. RESULTS: There was no differences in SpO2 , systolic and diastolic blood pressure before and after blood collection (P ≥ .05). The heart rate and respiratory rate after donation were slightly lower than those before (P < .05). The level of RBC, Hb concentration and Hct fell to a nadir on Day 3 (pre-donation vs post-donation on Day 3: RBC 4.81 ± 0.36*1012 /L vs 3.65 ± 0.31, P < .05; Hb 148.59 ± 11.92 g/L vs 113.19 ± 10.43 g/L, P < .05; Hct 44.08 ± 3.06% vs 33.38 ± 2.57%, P < .05) and recovered to the pre-donation levels at the eighth week post donation (pre-donation vs post-donation at the eighth week: RBC 4.81 ± 0.36*1012 /L vs 4.84 ± 0.34*1012 /L, P ≥ .05; Hb 148.59 ± 11.92 g/L vs 150.91 ± 11.75 g/L, P ≥ .05; Hct 44.08% ± 3.06% vs 43.86 ± 3.06%, P ≥ .05). Epo and the reticulocyte count reached the peak values on Days 1 and 7, respectively (Epo: D0 15.30 ± 7.47 mlU/ML vs D1 43.26 ± 10.52 mlU/ML, P < .05; reticulocyte count: D0 0.07 ± 0.02*109 /L vs D7 0.17 ± 0.04*109 /L, P < .05). The red cell net profits on Day 7, the second, fourth and eighth week postdonation were 160.39 ± 144.33 mL, 387.59 ± 128.74 mL, 530.95 ± 120.37 mL, and 614.18 ± 120.10 mL, and accounted for 27.47% ± 24.70%, 63.75% ± 24.91%, 86.20% ± 22.99%, and 99.20% ± 19.19% of RBC donation, respectively. The levels of serum iron, serum ferritin, and transferrin saturation increased during the first week because of the supplement of intravenous iron, and then gradually decreased and declined to the baseline at the end of the study period at the eighth week. CONCLUSIONS: The large-volume autologous RBCs donation of 600 mL is proved safe in our study. Combination support of normal saline to maintain blood volume and intravenous iron supplementation may ensure the safety and effectiveness of large-volume RBC apheresis.

ABSTRACT

The microtubule-associated protein tau is involved in Alzheimer's disease and other tauopathies. Recently, tau has been shown to undergo liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS), which is implicated in the physiological function and pathological aggregation of tau. In this report, we demonstrate that the green tea polyphenol (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) promotes the formation of liquid tau droplets at neutral pH by creating a network of hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen bonds, mainly with the proline-rich domain of tau. We further show that EGCG oxidation, tau phosphorylation, and the chemical structure of the polyphenol influence the efficacy of EGCG in facilitating tau LLPS. Complementary to the inhibitory activity of EGCG in tau fibrillization, our findings provide novel insights into the biological activity of EGCG and offer new clues for future studies on the molecular mechanism by which EGCG alleviates neurodegenerative diseases.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Xuebijing injection (XBJ) has increasingly been used for sepsis in China. We aimed to evaluate the methodological quality and summarize the evidence regarding the effectiveness of XBJ combined with ulinastatin (UTI) for sepsis from systematic reviews/meta-analyses (SRs/MAs). METHODS: From the inception to May 23, 2021, eight databases were searched to screen the SRs/MAs of XBJ combined with UTI in the treatment of sepsis. Methodology Quality of Systematic Reviews 2 (AMSTAR-2) was used to evaluate the quality of the methods. Grading of Recommendation,Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) was used in the assessment of evidence quality. RESULTS: Seven SRs/MAs on XBJ combined with UTI treatment for sepsis were included. The AMSTAR-2 showed that the methodological quality of all included SRs/MAs was rated as critically low. According to the evaluation results of GRADE, 30% (13/44), 30% (13/44), and 40% (18/44) were rated to be of moderate, low, and critically low quality, respectively. Descriptive analysis results showed that XBJ combined with UTI was an effective treatment modality for sepsis. CONCLUSIONS: All included SRs/MAs showed that XBJ combined with UTI was more effective than UTI alone in the treatment of sepsis on the basis of conventional treatment, but the reliability of the results was limited due to the disadvantages of lower methodological quality and higher risk of bias in the included SRs/MAs. Further high-quality clinical studies and SRs/MAs are recommended to verify whether XBJ combined with UTI is more effective than UTI alone.

ABSTRACT

Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common type of liver cancer and causes many cancer-related deaths worldwide; in China, it is the second most prevalent cause of cancer deaths. Most patients are diagnosed clinically with advanced stage disease. Summary: For more than a decade, sorafenib, a small-molecular-weight tyrosine kinase inhibitor (SMW-TKI) was the only molecular targeted drug available with a survival benefit for the treatment of advanced HCC. With the development of novel TKIs and immune checkpoint inhibitors for advanced HCC, the management of patients has been greatly improved. However, though angiogenic-based targeted therapy remains the backbone for the systemic treatment of HCC, to date, no Chinese guidelines for novel molecular targeted therapies to treat advanced HCC have been established. Our interdisciplinary panel on the treatment of advanced HCC comprising hepatologists, hepatobiliary surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, orthopedic surgeons, traditional Chinese medicine physicians, and interventional radiologists has reviewed the literature in order to develop updated treatment regimens. Key Messages: Panel consensus statements for the appropriate use of new molecular -targeted drugs including doses, combination therapies, adverse reaction management as well as efficacy evaluation, and predictions for treatment of advanced HCC with evidence levels based on published data are presented, thereby providing an overview of molecular targeted therapies for healthcare professionals.

ABSTRACT

The ecological risks such as water eutrophication caused by soil phosphorus loss have attracted extensive attention, and its dynamic changes and enrichment effects are the basis for formulating reasonable control measures. In this study, based on the paddy soils of 1.8×106 hm2 in Fujian province, the dynamic changes and ecological risks of available phosphorus in paddy soils over the past 40 years were analyzedusing a soil database of 1:50000. The soil database contained 1471, 215534, and 2895 paddy soil samples in different periods, respectively. The paddy soil samples were derived from the 1982 Second National Soil Census, the 2008 Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Areas Soil Testing and Formulated Fertilization Project and the 2018 Ministry of Agriculture, and the Rural Areas Arable Land Quality Monitoring Project, respectively. The results showed that from 1982 to 2018, the content of available phosphorus in paddy soils increased by 47 mg·kg-1, and the enriched area reached 1.65×106 hm2, accounting for 91% of the total paddy soils in Fujian province. From 1982 to 2008, the available phosphorus content of paddy soils in Fujian province increased by 28 mg·kg-1, with the enriched area reaching 1.47×106 hm2, accounting for 82% of the total paddy soils in Fujian province. From 2008 to 2018, the available phosphorus content of paddy soils in Fujian province increased by 19 mg·kg-1, with the enriched area reaching 1.22×106 hm2, accounting for 69% of the total paddy soils in Fujian province. Further ecological risk assessment showed that from 2008 to 2018, the area of paddy soil with ecological phosphorus enrichment risk in the province gradually increased, mainly distributed in percogenic paddy soils and hydromorphic paddy soils with a slope of less than 2°. In the future, effective phosphorus fertilizer management measures should be formulated for different types of paddy soil to prevent the occurrence of environmental problems such as water eutrophication.

INTRODUCTION: Sepsis is a common life-threatening, acute and severe disease with high morbidity and mortality, which seriously endangers patient health. Shengmai injection (SMI) is typically used as an alternative treatment for sepsis patients. This investigation aimed at designing a comprehensive recollection and meta-analytical exercise for evaluating efficacy and safety-profile for employing SMI against sepsis. METHODS: Multiple research literature repositories, both localized and global, were examined for randomized controlled trials of sepsis treated by SMI - from repository inception to December 2021 as a timeframe. Primary outcome measures contained 28-day all-cause mortality, while secondary outcome measures consisted of Sequential Organ Failure Assessment scorings, acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II scorings, ICU-based hospitalization length, mechanical ventilation timespan, ICU mortality rate, and adverse effects/events. RevMan V.5.3 was employed for data analyses. Two reviewers evaluated bias risks/investigation quality through Cochrane Collaboration risk of bias tool / Grades of Recommendations Assessment Development and Evaluation, separately. RESULTS: Such a comprehensive reviewing protocol review protocol systematically and objectively analyzes the effectiveness and safety-profile of SMI for therapy against sepsis, together with providing scientific grounds for clinic-based employment for SMI. ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) demonstrates a substanital threat to global public health. Several Chinese studies have been conducted to date evaluating the clinical efficacy of Zhenwu decoction (ZWD) as a treatment for HFrEF. The present systematic review will be conducted to more comprehensively evaluate the impact of ZWD on HFrEF outcomes. METHODS: For this systematic review, all randomized controlled trials (RCTs) reporting on the effectiveness of ZWD as a treatment for HFrEF published as of December 30, 2021 in the Embase, PubMed, Springer, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, China Biomedical Literature Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and the Wan-Fang databases will be identified without any language or publication restrictions. Two researchers will independently choose investigations, extract information, and gauge research quality. Primary outcomes of interest will include all-cause mortality and HF-associated mortality. Secondary outcomes will include the incidence of adverse events, ultrasonic cardiographic indices (including left ventricular ejection fraction and left ventricular mass index), New York Heart Association grade, N-terminal pro-b-type natriuretic peptide, B-type natriuretic peptide, and 6-minute walking distance. RevMan v 5.3 will be used to conduct meta-analyses where possible, with descriptive or subgroup analyses otherwise being conducted. Data will be given as risk ratios for categorical variables and mean difference for continuous variables. RESULTS: This comprehensive protocol will aid in the systematic and objective evaluation of the efficacy and safety of ZWD as a treatment for HFrEF, providing a scientific basis for the clinical utilization of ZWD.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Many types of lasers have been used to treat café-au-lait macules (CALMs) since the introduction of the selective photothermolysis theory. However, the efficacy and safety of picosecond lasers, compared with those of nanosecond lasers, have not been researched. To compare the efficacy and safety of 755 nm picosecond laser (PS-755 nm), Q-switched (QS) Alexandrite 755 nm nanosecond laser (QS-755 nm), and QS Nd:YAG 532 nm nanosecond laser (QS-532 nm) for treating CALMs. STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-one patients received several treatments at 3-month intervals. Lesions were divided into two or three approximately equal parts, which were randomly treated with PS-755 nm, QS-755 nm, and QS-532 nm. The safety and efficacy of three lasers were determined based on blinded visual assessments and self-reports of patients three months after the comparative trial. RESULTS: Visual assessment 3 months after the comparative trial revealed that there was no statistically significant difference among the sites treated by QS-755 nm (2.84 ± 1.11), QS-532 nm (2.63 ± 1.06), and PS-755 nm (2.74 ± 1.05) lasers. Five (26.32%) of 19 patients showed lesion recurrence. Adverse effects included acneiform miliaris, hypopigmentation, and hyperpigmentation, which were resolved within 12 months. Five (26.32%) of 19 patients who showed lesion recurrence 1-5 months after laser treatment had lightened or cleared at least 50% of the lesion. 46.67% of patients were satisfied or very satisfied with the outcome of the overall treatment. CONCLUSIONS: PS-755 nm, QS-755 nm, and QS-532 nm laser treatments were equally effective in treating and improving CALMs. PS-755 nm caused fewer adverse effects. ABSTRACT

Harmful algal blooms are increasingly recognized as a threat to the integrity of freshwater reservoirs, which serve as water supplies, wildlife habitats, and recreational attractions. While algal growth and accumulation is controlled by many environmental factors, the relative importance of these factors is unclear, particularly for turbid eutrophic systems. Here we develop and compare two models that test the relative importance of vertical mixing, light, and nutrients for explaining chlorophyll-a variability in shallow (2-3 m) embayments of a eutrophic reservoir, Jordan Lake, North Carolina. One is a multiple linear regression (statistical) model and the other is a process-based (mechanistic) model. Both models are calibrated using a 15-year data record of chlorophyll-a concentration (2003-2018) for the seasonal period of cyanobacteria dominance (June-October). The mechanistic model includes a novel representation of vertical mixing and is calibrated in a Bayesian framework, which allows for data-driven inference of important process rates. Both models show that chlorophyll-a concentration is much more responsive to nutrient variability than mixing, light, or temperature. While both models explain approximately 60% of the variability in chlorophyll-a, the mechanistic model is more robust in cross-validation and provides a more comprehensive assessment of algal drivers. Overall, these models indicate that nutrient reductions, rather than changes in mixing or background turbidity, are critical to controlling cyanobacteria in a shallow eutrophic freshwater system.

ABSTRACT

The root of Lindera reflexa Hemsl. (LR) is a folk Chinses herbal medicine that has been used to treat gastritis and peptic ulcers. In this study, three new stilbenes (1-3) and two known flavonoids (4 and 5) were isolated from the antiulcer purified fractions of LR. The chemical structures of the isolated compounds were characterized comprehensively based on the basis of extensive spectroscopic data. Absolute configurations of compounds 1, 2, and 3 were determined by ECD calculations. The cytotoxic activities of compounds 1-5 were evaluated by MTT assay. Compound 4 showed the strongest inhibitory effect on the proliferation of tumor cells lines MGC803 and SMMC-7721, with IC50 values of 2.65 and 4.13 µM, respectively. The quantitative analysis of 12 compounds of the antiulcer purified fractions of LR were carried out by using the reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method. Within the test range, all calibration curves showed good linearity (R2 > 0.9993). The LOD, LOQ, specificity, precision, and accuracy of the method were verified. Therefore, the present study may provide a valuable method for quality control the antiulcer purified fractions of LR.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Major depression disorder (MDD) is a severe health threat characterized by persistent depression, loss of interests, lack of initiative, and even suicidal tendencies. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is well tolerated and effective in treating adult MDD. However, research on the evaluation of efficacy and acceptability of different TCM strategies for adult MDD is insufficient. Consequently, it is high time to evaluate the efficacy of TCM strategies for adult MDD. Meanwhile, the acceptability of different TCM strategies is worth exploring. METHODS: Comprehensively and systematically retrieve the literature in PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database (CNKI), Wanfang Database, China Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP), and Chinese BioMedical Literature Database (CBM). The literature search will focus on randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with TCM in adult MDD. Two reviewers will search the literature and extract relevant data back-to-back. Once mismatched outcomes appear, arbitration will be conducted by a third reviewer. Based on the Bayesian framework, data analysis is carried out with STATA and WinBUGS software. Heterogeneity, transitivity, consistency test, bias risk assessment, subgroup and sensitivity analysis, evidence quality evaluation will be performed accordingly. RESULTS: The efficacy and acceptability of different TCM strategies for adults with MDD will be compared and sorted. CONCLUSION: The study will facilitate the treatment options of adults MDD according to the supporting evidence. INPLASY REGISTRATION NUMBER: INPLASY2020100028.

ABSTRACT

Tong-fu-li-fei (TFL) prescription has already used to treat sepsis in clinic but its mechanism remains unclear. Here, we aimed to investigate the effect and mechanism of Tong-fu-li-fei (TFL) prescription on sepsis in rats. The Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into the sham group, model group, the TFL 3.6 g/kg and 7.2 g/kg-treated group. The sepsis model was induced by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP). After 7 days, TFL treatment improved the survival rate of CLP rats and alleviated sepsis-induced intestinal mucosal injury. The ELISA assay showed that inflammatory cytokine expressions including TNF-α and IL-1ß in serum from TFL-treated rats were lower than that in the model. And TNF-α, IL-1ß and IL-6 from intestinal tissues were also decreased and IL-10 was increased in TFL-treated rats. Meanwhile the expression levels of the tight junction molecules occludin, claudin-1, and zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) mRNA and protein expressions examined by RT-PCR, western blot and immunohistochemistry, were also restored in rats that received TFL treatment. Our data showed that TFL mitigates the inflammatory response and maintains intestinal barrier function in sepsis through upregulating ZO-1/occludin/claudin-1 expression, providing a good experimental basis for its clinical treatment of sepsis.

ABSTRACT

Pulsed dye laser-resistant port-wine stains present a therapeutic challenge. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of photodynamic therapy for treating these lesions. A total of 67 patients with pulsed dye laser-resistant cervicofacial port-wine stains were retrospectively assessed after undergoing photodynamic therapy mediated with a combination of hemoporfin and 532-nm light. For objective evaluation of photodynamic therapy efficacy, first, the colorimetric changes in the port-wine stain lesions were evaluated according to the L*a*b* color coordinate system, then the values of color changes (ΔE) and blanching rate were calculated. For subjective evaluation of improvement, photographs taken before and after photodynamic therapy were evaluated by three independent assessors blindly. Patient satisfaction was also used as a factor in the subjective evaluation. Adverse events were recorded after treatment. The median ΔE decreased significantly from the pretreatment value of 13.42 to 9.90 at the 2-month follow up (P < 0.001). The median blanching rate of port-wine stains was 28.04% after an average of 1.21 sessions of photodynamic therapy. Based on the overall visual assessment, 46.2% patients showed excellent or good levels of improvement (>50% color blanching). Adverse events were minimal, transient and self-limiting. In conclusion, photodynamic therapy serves as an alternative means to treat pulsed dye laser-resistant port-wine stains.

ABSTRACT

Dendrobium, orchid, is a traditional Chinese herb medicine applied extensively as tonic and precious food for thou-sands of years recorded in ancient Chinese medical book "Shen Nong's Materia Medica". It's well known that bioactivities are usually related to the ingredients' basis. Based on the previous research, Dendrobium species contain amino acid, sesquiterpenoids, alkaloids and polysaccharides. As the bioactive substances, carbohydrate shows extensive activities in antitumor, antiglycation, immune-enhancing, antivirus, antioxidant, antitumor and etc. Therefore, as the main biologically active substance, the exact structures and latent activities of polysaccharides from Dendrobium species are widely focused on. In this review, we focus on the advancements of extraction methods and diversity of structures and bioactivities of polysaccharides obtained from Dendrobium species.

Up to date, the way in which metal nanoparticles are cleared in vivo has yet to be elucidated well. Herein, we report a novel intestinal goblet cell-mediated in vivo clearance pathway to remove metal nanoparticles. Typical metal nanoparticles such as triangular silver nanoplates, magnetic nanoparticles, gold nanorods, and gold nanoclusters were selected as representative examples. These metal nanoparticles were prepared, characterized, and injected via tail vein into a mice model with common bile duct (CBD) ligation. The feces and urines were collected for 7 days to be followed by the sacrifice of the mice and collection of the intestinal and gastric tissues for further analysis. The results showed that all four selected metal nanoparticles were located inside the goblet cells (GCs) of the whole intestinal tissue and were excreted into the gut lumen through the secretion of intestinal GC. Moreover, triangular silver nanoplates and gold nanorods were located inside the gastric parietal cells (PCs). Importantly, nanoparticles did not cause obvious pathological changes in intestinal tissues. In this study, we confirmed that the blood corpuscles are involved in the GCs secretion pathway. Furthermore, we found that the secretion of nanoparticles from intestinal GCs and PCs is accelerated by diarrhea induced via Chinese herbs. In conclusion, metal nanoparticles such as triangular silver nanoplates, magnetic nanoparticles, gold nanorods, and gold nanoclusters can be cleaned away by intestinal GCs and PCs. This novel pathway of in vivo clearance of metal nanoparticles has a great potential for future applications such as new drug design and development, nanoparticle-based labeling and in vivo tracking, and biosafety evaluation of in vivo nanoparticles.
