ABSTRACT

Bushen Tiaoxue Granules (BTG) is an empirical Chinese herbal formula that has been used for the treatment of subfertility. The protective effect of BTG on controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH)-induced impaired endometrial receptivity has been reported in our previous study. This study aims to explore the mechanisms of BTG on ameliorating abnormal morphology of endometrium based on network pharmacology. Active compounds of BTG were identified via the traditional Chinese medicine systems pharmacology and UPLC-MS technology. The SwissTargetPrediction platform and HERB database were used to screen out the putative targets of BTG. Potential targets of endometrial dysfunction caused by COH were obtained from three GEO databases. Through the STRING database, the protein-protein interaction was carried out according to the cross-common targets of diseases and drugs. GO terms and KEGG pathways enrichment analyses were conducted via the Metascape database. AutoDock Vina was used for docking validation of the affinity between active compounds and potential targets. Finally, in vivo experiments were used to verify the potential mechanisms derived from network pharmacology study. A total of 141 effective ingredients were obtained from TCMSP and nine of which were verified in UPLC-MS. Six genes were selected through the intersection of 534 disease related genes and 165 drug potential targets. Enrichment analyses showed that BTG might reverse endometrial dysfunction by regulating adherens junction and arachidonic acid metabolism. Hematoxylin-eosin staining revealed that BTG ameliorated the loose and edematous status of endometrial epithelium caused by COH. The protein expression of FOXO1A, ß-Catenin and COX-2 was decreased in the COH group, and was up-regulated by BTG. BTG significantly alleviates the edema of endometrial epithelium caused by COH. The mechanisms may be related to adheren junctions and activation of arachidonic acid metabolism. The potential active compounds quercetin, taxifolin, kaempferol, eriodictyol, and isorhamnetin identified from the BTG exhibit marginal cytotoxicity. Both high and low concentrations of kaempferol, eriodictyol, and taxifolin are capable of effectively ameliorating impaired hESC cellular activity.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Bladder urothelial carcinoma (BUC) ranks second in the incidence of urogenital system tumors, and the treatment of BUC needs to be improved. Puerarin, a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has been shown to have various effects such as anti-cancer effects, the promotion of angiogenesis, and anti-inflammation. This study investigates the effects of puerarin on BUC and its molecular mechanisms. METHODS: Through GeneChip experiments, we obtained differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and analyzed these DEGs using the Ingenuity® Pathway Analysis (IPA®), Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) and Gene Ontology (GO) pathway enrichment analyses. The Cell Counting Kit 8 (CCK8) assay was used to verify the inhibitory effect of puerarin on the proliferation of BUC T24 cells. String combined with Cytoscape® was used to create the Protein-Protein Interaction (PPI) network, and the MCC algorithm in cytoHubba plugin was used to screen key genes. Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA®) was used to verify the correlation between key genes and cell proliferation. RESULTS: A total of 1617 DEGs were obtained by GeneChip. Based on the DEGs, the IPA® and pathway enrichment analysis showed they were mainly enriched in cancer cell proliferation and migration. CCK8 experiments proved that puerarin inhibited the proliferation of BUC T24 cells, and its IC50 at 48 hours was 218µmol/L. Through PPI and related algorithms, 7 key genes were obtained: ITGA1, LAMA3, LAMB3, LAMA4, PAK2, DMD, and UTRN. GSEA showed that these key genes were highly correlated with BUC cell proliferation. Survival curves showed that ITGA1 upregulation was associated with poor prognosis of BUC patients. CONCLUSION: Our findings support the potential antitumor activity of puerarin in BUC. To the best of our knowledge, bioinformatics investigation suggests that puerarin demonstrates anticancer mechanisms via the upregulation of ITGA1, LAMA3 and 4, LAMB3, PAK2, DMD, and UTRN, all of which are involved in the proliferation and migration of bladder urothelial cancer cells.

ABSTRACT

ObjectiveChronic heart failure (CHF) is the terminal stage of cardiovascular disease. The adverse cardiovascular events of CHF patients with weakness have increased significantly. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has a good effect on CHF. However,there are few reports on the clinical observation of the treatment of CHF with weakness in elderly patients by TCM combined with conventional health-preserving exercises. This study aimed to explore the clinical efficacy of Qiangxin decoction combined with Baduanjin in the treatment of elderly patients with CHF and weakness. MethodSixty CHF patients with Qi deficiency,blood stasis,and water retention syndrome admitted to the Cardiovascular Department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi University of Chinese Medicine from January 2020 to December 2021 were enrolled. The patients in the control group were treated with conventional western medicine according to the guidelines,while those in the treatment group received additional Qiangxin decoction and Baduanjin exercise based on the therapeutic protocol of the control group. The levels of serum N-terminal B-type brain natriuretic peptide precursor (NT-proBNP),creatine kinase (CK),lactate dehydrogenase (LDH),free fatty acid (FFA),left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF),left ventricular end-diastolic dimension (LEVDD),6-minute walk distance (6MWD),Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLHFQ), and Tilburg Frailty Indicator (TFI) scores of the two groups were observed before and one month after treatment. At the same time,the re-admission within three months was compared between the two groups. ResultThere was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of the general data and the therapeutic indexes before treatment. After treatment,the NT-proBNP,CK,LDH,FFA,LVEDD,MLHFQ, and TFI scores of the two groups were lower than those before treatment(P<0.05,P<0.01), and the LVEF and 6MWD were higher(P<0.05,P<0.01). The efficacy of the treatment group was superior to that of the control group after treatment (P<0.05,P<0.01). The re-admission rate within three months in the treatment group was 7.1% (2/28), lower than 30.8% (8/26) in the control group (χ2=4.897,P<0.05). ConclusionQiangxin decoction combined with Baduanjin is helpful to improve the body energy metabolism,heart function,quality of life,and weakness level of elderly CHF patients with weakness, and reduce the rate of re-admission.

ABSTRACT

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine and metabolic disorder among women of reproductive age. Current standard treatment includes lifestyle change, oral pharmacological agents, and surgical modalities. However, the efficacy of current therapies is less than satisfactory. Clinical evidence has shown that acupuncture is effective for regulating hormone levels, promoting ovulation, and attenuating insulin resistance in patients with PCOS. Acupuncture may affect the production of ß-endorphin, which may lead to gonadotropin-releasing hormone secretion and then affect ovulation, menstrual cycle, and fertility. The mechanism of acupuncture for patients with PCOS has not been comprehensively reviewed so far. Better understanding of the mechanisms of acupuncture would help popularize the use of acupuncture therapy for patients with PCOS. In this narrative review, we aimed to overview the potential mechanisms and evidence-based data of acupuncture on PCOS, and analyze the most frequently used acupoints based on animal and clinical studies. The results of this study will contribute to a better understanding of the current situation in this field.

ABSTRACT

Three aryl ketones-derived porous organic polymers (ATP-POPM, ATP-POPP and ATP-POPO) were fabricated through the aldol condensation reaction of acetylated triphenylsilane precursor (ATP) with different aromatic aldehydes for the first time. The ATP-POPM exhibited superior extraction capacity toward phenylurea herbicides (PUHs). A sensitive method for the simultaneous determination of six PUHs in water, tea drink and mushroom samples was developed with ATP-POPM as solid phase extraction adsorbent prior to high performance liquid chromatography ultraviolet detection. Under the optimized conditions, the linear response of PUHs was 0.09-80.0 ng mL-1 for water, 0.18-100.0 ng mL-1 for tea drinks and 4.50-200.0 ng g -1 for mushroom samples. The detection limits (S/N=3) of the method were 0.03-0.10 ng mL-1, 0.06-0.18 ng mL-1, 1.50-4.50 ng g -1 for water, tea drink and mushroom, respectively. The method recoveries for spiked samples were in the range of 80.7%-116.0%, with relative standard deviations less than 10.3%. The results proved that the established method was sensitive and suitable to detect PUHs with acceptable accuracy and precision. This work provided a powerful tool to synthesize promising adsorbent by aldol condensation reaction for detecting six PUHs simultaneously in real samples.

ABSTRACT

Professor YANG Jun's clinical experience of acupuncture and moxibustion for oculomotor paralysis is summarized. Professor YANG Jun pays attention to disease differentiation and syndrome differentiation in the treatment of this disease. According to the characteristics of oculomotor paralysis, "early diagnosis and seeking treatment from the source" is advocated. According to the etiology and pathogenesis, professor YANG divides oculomotor paralysis into three types: the syndrome of wind-evil attacking collaterals, the syndrome of spleen-stomach weakness and the syndrome of qi-deficiency and blood-stasis. As such, the acupoints are selected according to syndrome differentiation, and several different acupuncture methods (pricking needling at eyelids, penetrating needling and lifting eyelids and contralateral- balance needling on the healthy side) are adopted to improve the symptoms of oculomotor paralysis. It is also suggested to use the combination of scalp acupuncture and electroacupuncture to achieve the best dose-effect state. Moreover, local stimulation around the eyes is important to achieve the effects of "qi reaching affected area".

BACKGROUND: Tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA) remains the sole FDA approved thrombolytic drug for ischemic stroke. But delayed thrombolytic therapy with tPA may increase the risk of hemorrhagic transformation. Many Chinese herbal medicines have been used as tPA helpers to enhance the capacity of tPA and minimize the risk of hemorrhagic transformation. The efficacy of Chinese herbal medicines on tPA thrombolysis is not systematically analyzed. METHODS: We searched the following three databases up to January 2022: Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus. Studies that reported the efficacy and safety of Chinese herbal medicines on tPA thrombolysis in experimental stroke were included. The efficacy outcomes were neurological score and infarct volume, the safety outcomes were cerebral hemorrhage and blood brain barrier (BBB) damage. We used the checklist of CAMARADES to assess the quality of included studies. Standardized mean difference (SMD) with 95% confidence intervals were used to assess all the outcomes. Subgroup analyses were performed to explore the sources of heterogeneity. Trim and fill method and Egger's test were used to assess the potential publication bias. Sensitivity analyses were used to identify the stability of the results. RESULTS: A total of nine studies including 11 Chinese herbal medicines fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were subsequently analyzed. The pooled data demonstrated that Chinese herbal medicines improved neurological score (2.23 SMD, 1.42-3.04), infarct volume (1.08 SMD, 0.62-1.54), attenuated cerebral hemorrhage (1.87 SMD, 1.34-2.4), and BBB dysfunction (1.9 SMD, 1.35-2.45) following tPA thrombolysis in experimental stroke. Subgroup analysis indicated that the route of drug delivery, dosage of tPA, and stroke model used may be factors inducing heterogeneity and influencing the efficacy. CONCLUSION: Treatment with Chinese herbal medicines significantly improved neurological score and infarct volume, reduced cerebral hemorrhage and BBB damage after tPA thrombolysis. This study supports Chinese herbal medicine as an adjuvant therapy in reducing the side effects of tPA thrombolysis after acute ischemic stroke. The results should be interpreted with more caution since this article was based on animal studies.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness and safety of intraoperative intravenous magnesium (IIM) on spine surgery remain uncertain, as recent randomized controlled trials (RCTs) yielded conflicting results. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of IIM on spine surgery. METHODS: A literature search was performed on multiple electronic databases, ClinicalTrial.gov and Google Scholar on July 12th 2021, and reference lists were examined. We selected RCTs comparing the effects of IIM with placebo treatment on spine surgery. We calculated pooled standard mean difference (SMD) or risk ratio (RR) with 95% confident interval (CI) under a random-effect model. We assessed risk of bias using Cochrane risk-of-bias tool and Jadad score was applied to assess the quality of each included trial. Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) was used to determine the confidence in effect estimates. Sensitivity analysis was conducted by omitting each included study one by one from the pooled analysis. PROSPERO Registration: CRD42021266170. FINDINGS: Fourteen trials of 781 participants were included. Low- to moderate-quality evidence suggested that IIM reduces postoperative morphine consumption at 24 h (SMD: -1·61 mg, 95% CI: -2·63 to -0·58) and intraoperative remifentanil requirement (SMD: -2·09 ug/h, 95% CI: -3·38 to -0·81). High-quality evidence suggested that IIM reduces the risk of postoperative nausea and vomiting compared with placebo (RR: 0·43, 95% CI: 0·26 to 0·71). Besides, moderate-quality evidence suggested that recovery orientation time in the IIM group is longer than control group (SMD: 1·13 min, 95% CI: 0·83 to 1·43). INTERPRETATION: IIM as adjuvant analgesics showed overall benefits on spine surgery in terms of reducing analgesic requirement and postoperative nausea and vomiting; however, potential risks of IIM, such as delayed anesthetic awakening, should not be ignored. Future evidence will inform the optimal strategy of IIM administration for patients undergoing spine surgery. BACKGROUND: Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (BA) and Bacillus subtilis (BS) are usually used as feed supplements directly or bacterial inoculants in biological feeds for animals. However, few research have reported the effects of BA and BS on fermentation characteristics and bacterial community successions of whole-plant corn silage during ensiling. If the BA and BS inoculants have positive effects on silages, then they could not only improve fermentation characteristics, but also deliver BA or BS viable cells to ruminants, which would play its probiotic effect. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of BA and BS on the fermentation, chemical characteristics, bacterial community and their metabolic pathway of whole-plant corn silage. RESULTS: Freshly chopped whole-plant corn was inoculated without or with BA and BS, respectively, and ensiled for 1, 3, 7, 14 and 60 d. Results showed that BA and BS inoculations increased lactic acid concentrations of whole-plant corn silages compared with control, and BA inoculation decreased acetic acid concentrations, whereas BS inoculation decreased fiber contents and increased crude protein (CP) content. Higher water-soluble carbohydrate contents and lower starch contents were observed in BA- and BS-inoculated silages compared with that in control. The decreased CP content and increased non-protein nitrogen content were observed in BA-inoculated silage, which was consistent with the higher amino acid metabolism abundances observed in BA-inoculated silage. In addition, it was noteworthy that BA and BS inoculations increased the metabolism of cofactors and vitamins, and decreased the relative abundances of drug resistance: antimicrobial pathways. We also found that the bacterial metabolism pathways were clearly separated into three clusters based on the ensiling times of whole-plant corn silage in the present study. There were no significant differences in bacterial community compositions among the three groups during ensiling. However, BA and BS inoculations decreased the relative abundances of undesirable bacteria such as Acetobacter and Acinetobacter. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggested that the BS strain was more suitable as silage inoculants than the BA strain in whole-plant corn silage in this study.

Sudan I is one of the industry dyes and widely used in cosmetics, wax agent, solvent and textile. Sudan I has multiple toxicity such as carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, genotoxicity and oxidative damage. However, Sudan I has been illegally used as colorant in food products, triggering worldwide attention about food safety. Nevertheless, the toxicity of Sudan I on reproduction, particularly on oocyte maturation is still unclear. In the present study, using mouse in vivo models, we report the toxicity effects of Sudan I on mouse oocyte. The results reflect that Sudan I exposure disrupts spindle organization and chromosomes alignment as well as cortical actin distribution, thus leading to the failure of polar body extrusion. Based on the transcriptome results, it is found that the exposure of Sudan I leads to the change in expression of 764 genes. Moreover, it's further reflected that the damaging effects of Sudan I are mediated by the destruction of mitochondrial functions, which induces the accumulated ROS to stimulate oxidative stress-induced apoptosis. As an endogenous hormone, melatonin within the ovarian follicle plays function on improving oocyte quality and female reproduction by efficiently suppressing oxidative stress. Moreover, melatonin supplementation also improves oocyte quality and increases fertilization rate during in vitro culture. Consistent with these, we find that in vivo supplementation of melatonin efficaciously suppresses mitochondrial dysfunction and the accompanying apoptosis, thus reverses oocyte meiotic deteriorations. Collectively, our results prove the reproduction toxicity of Sudan I for the exposure of Sudan I reduces the oocyte quality, and demonstrate the protective effects of melatonin against Sudan I-induced meiotic deteriorations.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To investigate the effects of Bushen Huatan Granules (BHG) and Kunling Wan (KW), the two Chinese medicines, on the regulation of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and their underlying mechanisms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: PCOS rat model was established by subcutaneous injection of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) (6 mg/100 g/day) for 20 days, followed by treatment with BHG (0.75, 1.49, and 2.99 g/kg) or KW (0.46, 0.91, and 1.82 g/kg) by gavage for 4 weeks. Estrous cycle was detected by vaginal smears. Follicles development was assessed by histology. Levels of testosterone and insulin in serum were tested by ELISA. Apoptosis of Granulosa cells (GCs) was evaluated by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end-labeling staining. Pathways associated with apoptosis were detected with western blot. Pregnancy outcome was also assessed. GCs were pre-treated with 10-5 M testosterone in vitro for 24 h, then incubated with serum from rats receiving BHG (1.49 g/kg) or KW (1.82 g/kg). The parameters concerning apoptosis, mitochondrial function and endoplasmic reticulum stress were assessed. RESULTS: Post-treatment with either BHG or KW ameliorated DHEA-induced irregular estrous cycles, follicles development abnormalities, increase of testosterone and insulin in serum, and the apoptosis of GCs. Post-treatment with BHG decreased the expression of cleaved caspase-9/caspase 9, release of cytochrome C from mitochondria, and mitochondria reactive oxygen species production, increased activities of complex I, II, IV of ovarian tissue. Post-treatment with KW decreased the levels of caspase-12, GRP78, C/EBP homologous protein, phosphorylation of IRE-I, x-box-binding protein 1s, as well as phosphorylation of proline-rich receptor-like protein kinase, phosphorylation of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2α and ATF4 of ovarian tissue and GCs. Both BHG and KW ameliorated pregnancy outcome. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated BHG or KW as a potential strategy for treatment of PCOS induced by DHEA, and suggested that the beneficial role of the two medicines were mediated by different pathway with the effect of BHG being correlated with the regulation of mitochondria, while the effect of KW being attributable to protection of endoplasmic reticulum stress.

BACKGROUND: Solanum nigrum L. decoction has been used as a folklore medicine in China to prevent the postoperative recurrence of bladder cancer (BC). However, there are no previous pharmacological studies on the protective mechanisms of this activity of the plant. Thus, this study aimed to perform a systematic analysis and to predict the potential action mechanisms underlying S. nigrum activity in BC based on network pharmacology. METHODS: Based on network pharmacology, the active ingredients of S. nigrum and the corresponding targets were identified using the Traditional Chinese Medicines for Systems Pharmacology Database and Analysis Platform database, and BC-related genes were screened using GeneCards and the Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man database. In addition, ingredient-target (I-T) and protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks were constructed using STRING and Cytoscape, Gene Ontology (GO) terms and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analyses were conducted, and then the pathways directly related to BC were integrated manually to reveal the pharmacological mechanism underlying S. nigrum-medicated therapeutic effects in BC. RESULTS: Seven active herbal ingredients from 39 components of S. nigrum were identified, which shared 77 common target genes related to BC. I-T network analysis revealed that quercetin was associated with all targets and that NCOA2 was targeted by four ingredients. Besides, interleukin 6 had the highest degree value in the PPI network, indicating a hub role. A subsequent gene enrichment analysis yielded 86 significant GO terms and 89 significant pathways, implying that S. nigrum had therapeutic benefits in BC through multi-pathway effects, including the HIF-1, TNF, P53, MAPK, PI3K/Akt, apoptosis and bladder cancer pathway. CONCLUSIONS: S. nigrum may mediate pharmacological effects in BC through multi-target and various signaling pathways. Further validation is required experimentally. Network pharmacology approach provides a predicative novel strategy to reveal the holistic mechanism of action of herbs.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Acupuncture is widely used for pain diseases while evidence of its efficacy for sciatica is insufficient. We aim to explore the feasibility and efficacy of acupuncture with different acupoint selecting strategies for sciatica induced by lumbar disc herniation. METHODS: This is a multicenter, three-arm, patient-assessor-blinded randomized controlled pilot trial. Ninety patients will be assigned randomly into 3 groups including disease-affected meridians (DAM) group, non-affected meridians (NAM) group, and sham acupuncture (SA) group in a 1:1:1 ratio. The trial involves a 4-week treatment along with follow-up for 22 weeks. The primary outcome is the change of leg pain intensity measured by the visual analogue scale (VAS) from baseline to week 4 after randomization. Secondary outcomes include functional status, back pain intensity, and quality of life. Adverse events will also be recorded. DISCUSSION: The results will inspire the optimal acupuncture strategy for sciatica and help establish a better design as well as power calculation for a full-scale study. ABSTRACT

A carbazolic conjugated microporous polymer (designated as CZ-CMP) was successfully synthesized through Scholl reaction of carbazole with 1, 3, 5-triphenylbenzene. The CZ-CMP was characterized by FT-IR spectrum, X-ray diffraction, nitrogen sorption isotherms, and scanning electron microscopy. The characterization results showed that the CZ-CMP had a spherical structure with high surface area and good microporosity. Its adsorption performance was investigated by applying it as an adsorbent for the solid phase extraction (SPE) of phenyl urea herbicides (PUHs) (metoxuron, chlortoluron, isoproturon, monolinuron and buturon) from tea drinks samples prior to high performance liquid chromatographic detection. The CZ-CMP displayed high extraction efficiency for the PUHs, and the primary factors affecting the SPE efficiency including the type and volume of the eluent, sample solution pH, sample loading rate and sample volume were optimized. Under the optimized conditions, a good linear response for the analytes was observed in the range of 0.10-80.0 ng mL-1 with correlation coefficients (r) from 0.9937 to 0.9997. The limits of detection were measured to be in the range of 0.02-0.30 ng mL-1 and the limits of quantitation were in the range of 0.06-0.9 ng mL-1. The developed method was successfully applied for the determination of the five PUHs in four different kinds of drinks with the method recoveries between 83.7% and 118% and the relative standard deviations between 1.0% and 10%. Besides, the application potential of the CZ-CMP was evaluated by using it to extract different types of the organic compounds including some phthalate eaters (PAEs), chlorophenol (CPs), nitroimidazoles and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The results indicated that the CZ-CMP had strong adsorption ability for the compounds with more hydrogen bonding sites and moderate hydrophobicity.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness and possible mechanism of acupuncture treatment for negative emotion in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). METHODS: A total of 40 PCOS patients were randomly divided into an observation group and a control group, 20 cases in each one. Both groups received lifestyle interventions (exercise and diet guidance) on the 5th day of menstruation. On the basis of above treatment, the patients in the observation group received acupuncture at Guanyuan (CV 4), Zhongwan (CV 12), Guilai (ST 29), Futu (ST 32), Liangqiu (ST 34), Sanyinjiao (SP 6), Zusanli (ST 36), Hegu (LI 4), Shenmen (HT 7), Baihui (GV 20) as the main acupoints, and connected the electroacupuncture (continuous wave, 2 Hz, 30 min), once every other day, 3 times a week. The treatment for 1 month was as one course and 4 courses were required totally in both groups. Before and after treatment, the body mass index (BMI), ferriman-gallway (F-G) score, self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) score, self-rating depression scale (SDS) score, PCOS health-related quality of life questionnaire (PCOSQ) score were observed, meanwhile, serum sex hormone, including follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), estrogen (E2), progestin (P), prolactin (PRL), testosterone (T), sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) and free androgen index (FAI) levels, and serumß-endorphin levels were detected. RESULTS: Compared with before treatment, the BMI, F-G score, SAS score, SDS score and serum FAI level were decreased and the PCOSQ score and the levels of serum SHBG andß-endorphin were increased in the observation group after treatment (all P<0.05). Compared with before treatment, the SDS score was decreased in the control group after treatment (P<0.05). Compared with the control group, the F-G score, SDS score, SAS score, and serum FAI level were lower, and the PCOSQ score and serumß-endorphin level were higher in the observation group after treatment (all P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Applying acupuncture to the treatment of patients with PCOS can effectively relieve anxiety and depression, and the mechanism may be related to the regulation on the levels of serumß-endorphin and androgen.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of Bushen Tiaoxue Granules and Kunling Wan, the two Chinese medicines, on vascular dysfunction and the impairment of endometrial receptivity caused by controlled ovarian hyperstimulation and its underlying mechanism. METHODS: Female Sprague Dawley rats with regular estrous cycle were enrolled and given Bushen Tiaoxue Granules or Kunling Wan by gavage for 12 days, and then, controlled ovarian hyperstimulation model was induced. We assessed endometrial microvessels, endometrial blood flow, levels of estradiol and progesterone in serum, vascular endothelial growth factor A upstream molecules estrogen and progesterone receptors in the endometrium, and pregnancy outcome. RESULTS: Pre-treatment of Bushen Tiaoxue Granules or Kunling Wan increases endometrial blood flow of controlled ovarian hyperstimulation rats, up-regulates vascular endothelial growth factor A and microvessels, improves the endometrial morphology of controlled ovarian hyperstimulation rats during implantation, decreases the super physiological concentration of estradiol and progesterone in serum, and increases the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor A upstream molecules estrogen and progesterone receptors in the endometrium. In addition, Bushen Tiaoxue Granules or Kunling Wan elevates the lysophosphatidic acid receptor 3 that participates in vascularization and increases the expression of leukemia inhibitory factor through up-regulating the expression of p53 in the endometrium, ultimately affecting pregnancy outcome. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated Bushen Tiaoxue Granules or Kunling Wan as a potential strategy for prevention of impairment in angiogenesis and endometrial receptivity induced by controlled ovarian hyperstimulation.

ABSTRACT

Herein, biochars from 6 different feedstocks (taro straw, corn straw, cassava straw, Chinese fir straw, banana straw, and Camellia oleifera shell) were produced using magnesium chloride (MgCl2) as a modifier due to their sorption behavior toward NH4+-N and phosphorus in an aqueous solution. The biochar characteristics were evaluated, including pH, pHPZC, biochar magnesium content, and total pore volume (PVtot). The experimental results in terms of the kinetics and equilibrium isotherms showed that the cassava straw and banana straw biochars exhibited the theoretical maximum saturated adsorption capacities of 24.04 mg·g-1 (NH4+-N) and 31.15 mg·g-1 (TP), respectively. Biochar produced from these feedstocks had higher magnesium contents and greater total pore volumes, reflecting the significant contributions from magnesium and steric effects. FTIR, XRD, and SEM/EDS analyses demonstrated that NH4+-N and TP sorption mechanisms predominantly involved surface electrostatic attraction, Mg2+ precipitates and complexation with surface hydroxyl functional groups.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of patchouli alcohol in enhancing Helicobater pylori's action in eradicating macrophages and its mechanism. H. pylori was co-cultured with macrophages at a ratio of MOI=100 in different concentrations of patchouli alcohol. The effect of patchouli alcohol in eradicating macrophages was detected by agar dilution method. The effect of patchouli alcohol on NO and myeloperoxidase (MPO) levels in macrophages were measured by H. pylori by biochemical methods. Patchouli alcohol effect on H. pylori-induced pro-inflammatory gene expression and protein secretion in macrophages were detected by RT-qPCR and ELISA method. The eradication of H. pylori has significantly enhanced, and the destabilization of lysosomes has been reversed. Meanwhile, patchouli alcohol has an effect in inhibiting pro-inflammation and oxidation. The mechanism of patchouli alcohol in eradicating H. pylori and resisting oxidative stress may be associated to the blocking of bacteria escape lysosome combination procedures.

ABSTRACT

A phosphorous-enriched knitting aryl network polymer (named as Ph-PPh3-KAP) was fabricated by one-step crosslinking between triphenylphosphine and benzene, with formaldehyde dimethyl acetal as an external crosslinker. The Ph-PPh3-KAP had a large surface area and good physicochemical stability. Its adsorption performance for aromatic organic compounds was evaluated by using some dyes and benzene ring-containing compounds as the model adsorbates. The results exhibited that it had a rapid and effective adsorption for the aromatic organic compounds due to the hydrogen bonding and polar interactions of the Ph-PPh3-KAP with the target compounds. Then, the Ph-PPh3-KAP was explored as the adsorbent for the solid phase extraction of some phenylurea pesticides from lake water, tomato and cucumber samples prior to HPLC analysis. Under optimal conditions, the linear responses of the phenylurea pesticides were 0.1-100 ng mL-1 for lake water and 0.5-100 ng g-1 for cucumber and tomato samples. The limits of detection for the analytes at S/N = 3 were 0.01-0.02 ng mL-1 for lake water and 0.03-0.05 ng g-1 for cucumber and tomato samples. The recoveries were in the range from 80.8% to 118%. The Ph-PPh3-KAP exhibited a great application potential for extraction of aromatic compounds.
