ABSTRACT

The development of Chinese medicine and Western medicine andrology is based on different social background and academic systems, either Chinese medicine or Western medicine andrology has their limitations, therefore, integration of Chinese and Western medicine (ICWM) andrology is in a great need. After more than 30 years of development, andrology has made great achievements in the construction of specialized academic association, holding academic conferences and publication of academic monographs, and the research progress on this field is mainly in the combination of disease and syndrome, microdifferentiation of symptoms and signs and basic research development. However, the comprehensive theoretic system of ICWM andrology has not yet established, and the related studies are still on the primary stage. In the future studies, great efforts still need to be made to expand the methods for the investigation of ICWM, and make innovations in the field of andrology.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUNDThe non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is the AIDS symbol of tumor, with high incidence and poor prognosis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the radiological demonstrations of AIDS complicated by intestinal lymphoma and its pathological mechanism.

METHODSCT scan and pathological data of 3 cases of AIDS complicated by intestinal lymphoma were retrospectively analyzed. All the 3 cases received CT diagnostic scanning, including 2 receiving barium enema radiography after lower gastrointestinal tract cleansing, 1 receiving laporotomy to obtain partial thickened intestinal canal for histopathology and 1 with autopsy for histopathological analysis.

RESULTSIntestinal canal lymphoma occurred at the left intestinal canal in 2 cases and at the right intestinal canal in the other case, with manifestations of unevenly thickened intestinal canal wall, narrowed canal lumen and filling defect. It was pathologically classified as B cell lymphoma.

CONCLUSIONSAIDS complicated by B cell lymphoma has manifestations of unevenly thickened intestinal canal wall and narrowed canal lumen, which are non-specific. It should be differentiated from other tumors of intestinal canal in its diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

The volatile compositions of hydrodistilled essential oils in the flower heads of Chrysanthemum indicum L. from eight populations in China were analyzed by GC/MS. A total of 169 compounds representing 88.79-99.53% of the oils were identified, and some remarkable differences were found in the constituent percentages of the eight populations. The predominant components of the essential oils were 1,8-cineole (0.62-7.34%), (+)-(1R,4R)-camphor (0.17-27.56%), caryophyllene oxide (0.54-5.8%), ß-phellandrene (0.72-1.87%), (-)-(1S,2R,4S)-borneol acetate (0.33-8.46%), 2-methyl-6-(p-tolyl)hept-2-ene (0.3-8.6%), 4,6,6-trimethylbicyclo[3.1.1]hept-3-en-2-yl acetate (0.17-26.48%), and hexadecanoic acid (0.72-15.97%). The chemotaxonomic value of the essential-oil compositions was discussed according to the results of cluster analysis (CA) and principal-component analysis (PCA). The eight populations were divided into five groups as different chemotypes (Groups A-E), and the scores together with the loadings revealed clearly different chemical properties of each population. In conclusion, GC/MS in combination with chemometric techniques provided a flexible and reliable method for characterizing the essential oils of different populations of C. indicum L.

ABSTRACT

A new dicoumarin, named as dimeresculetin (1), together with another dicoumarin, euphorbetin (2) and esculetin (3) were isolated from the ethyl acetate extract of the dried whole plants of Viola yedoensis Makino. The structure of 1 was elucidated as 7-hydroxy-6-[(6,7-dihydroxy-2-oxo-2H-1-benzopyran-5-yl)oxy]-2H-1-benzopyran-2-one on the basis of extensive NMR, as well as the other spectral analysis. Compounds 1-3 exhibited anticoagulant activities with respect to activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), prothrombin time (PT) and thrombin time (TT).

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to assess the status of treatment of chronic prostatitis (CP) in Chinese men. A population-based cross-sectional survey was performed, in which 15 000 men aged between 15 and 60 years were randomly selected to receive a questionnaire designed to assess National Institutes of Health Chronic Prostatitis Symptoms Index (NIH-CPSI) status, therapeutic efficacy and 28 other items. A total of 12 743 men (84.95%) completed the questionnaire, of whom 1 071 (8.4%) were identified as having prostatitis-like symptoms and 517 (4.5%) were diagnosed with CP according to NIH-CPSI criteria and prostatitis-like symptomatology. Of the CP patients, 372 (65%) underwent long-term routine treatment 12 times per year. Additionally, 217 (72.8%) patients received antibiotic therapy and 215 (79.3%) men showed therapeutic effects. The treatment cost USD 1 151 (8 059 yuan) per person per year on average. Most CP patients received routine treatment, in most cases with antibiotics. Treatment was costly and most CP patients were not satisfied with its effectiveness. Antibacterial treatment might have been effective primarily in patients with bacterial disease.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo compare therapeutic effects of acupoint catgut embedding therapy and western medicine on ulcerative colitis.

METHODSOne hundred and sixteen cases of ulcerative colitis were randomly divided into a treatment group and a control group. The treatment group of 56 cases were treated with catgut embedding at Dachangshu (BL 25), Zusanli (ST 36), Shangjuxu (ST 37) and other points, and the control group with oral administration of salicylazosul-fapyridine, 4-6 g/day. The therapeutic effects and improvement of symptoms were evaluated by reexamination of endoscopy before and 4 weeks, 6-8 weeks after treatment in the two groups, and changes of stool property and abdominal pain were compared.

RESULTSThe short-term therapeutic effect and the long-term therapeutic effect of the treatment group were better than those of the control group.

CONCLUSIONAcupoint catgut embedding therapy has a better therapeutic effect on ulcerative colitis with less adverse reactions.
