ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are involved both in immune system regulation and inflammation. The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the association between maternal dietary intake of PUFAs during pregnancy and atopic dermatitis (AD) and food allergy (FA) in their children up to 7-9 years of age. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study population consists of 557 mother-child pairs from the Polish Mother and Child Cohort (REPRO_PL). Based on the Food Frequency Questionnaire completed between the 20-24th weeks of pregnancy, n-3 and n-6 PUFAs as well as n-6:n-3 fatty acid ratio were estimated using food composition tables. Children's health examinations at the age of 1, 2, and 7-9 years were performed by an allergist. Generalized estimating equations were performed in order to assess the prevalence of AD and FA at 3 time points. Independent variables in the equation were n-3, n-6 PUFAs and n-6:n-3 PUFAs ratio. In addition multivariate models were performed to assess the association of PUFAs with AD and FA. RESULTS: The prevalence of AD was 37%, 26% and 21% and FA 26%, 22% and 22% at age of 1, 2 and 7-9 years, respectively. Higher n-6:n-3 fatty acid ratio correlated with higher prevalence of AD at age of 7-9 years (p < 0.07). In multivariate model n-6 PUFAs were significantly associated with increased risk of persistent FA (OR = 1.5, 95% CI: 1.1-2.1). CONCLUSIONS: These results may contribute to the existing knowledge on the impact of maternal diet during pregnancy on children's optimal health, however further studies are needed before drawing conclusions and creating clinical practice guidelines. ABSTRACT

(1) Background: The aim of the study is to evaluate the analgesic effectiveness of a physical therapy regimen that combines the use of an electromagnetic field with light radiation emitted by LEDs, along with the use of Traumeel S ointment, in patients with gonarthrosis. (2) Methods: The study included 90 patients with knee osteoarthritis (grade 2 Kellgren and Lawrence osteoarthritis). They were divided into three groups: Group I, 30 patients treated with magnetic stimulation plus LED therapy; Group II, 30 patients treated with Traumeel S ointment; and Group III, 30 patients treated with magnetic stimulation plus LED therapy with Traumeel S ointment. Pain intensity was assessed using the VAS and Laitinen scales before and after a series of treatments. (3) Results: Significant results in terms of pain reduction before and after treatment were obtained in each of the study groups, as there were significant differences in the VAS pain intensity scores before and after the procedures between the groups. In group I, with electromagnetic field and LED light treatment, the difference was 35.5; in group II, which received Traumeel S® ointment, the difference was 18.5; and in group III, with electromagnetic field and LED light treatment as well as Traumeel S ointment, the difference was 26.5. In the Laitinen scale, the differences were insignificant, although the size distribution was similar. (4) Conclusions: The therapy used in this study showed that magnetic stimulation plus LED therapy and the use of Traumeel S ointment gave positive results in terms of pain reduction in each of the study groups. The strongest analgesic factor seems to be magnetic and LED therapies used separately. Traumeel S in magnetoledophoresis does not work synergistically with the magnetic field of LED light, and even worsens the effect of the therapy used.

ABSTRACT

The study objective was to identify determinants of essential elements and vitamins intake, and microelements and vitamins concentration in blood among pregnant women from Poland. Based on the data from food frequency questionnaires and information about supplements taken (n = 1252), daily supply of six elements (calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, copper, selenium) and nine vitamins (folate, vitamins A, E, C, B1, B2, B3, B6, B12) was calculated. Zinc, copper, selenium (n = 340), vitamin A and E (n = 358) concentration was determined in blood collected during pregnancy. Most of the women did not meet the demand for essential elements and vitamins with a diet. About 94% of the respondents declared supplements use. The women with higher education, indicating leisure-time, physical activity and multiparity had a higher chance of meeting the average demand for the majority of the analyzed nutrients. On the other hand, factors such as BMI < 18.5kg/m2, a higher level of stress, and late first medical-care visit were associated with a lower chance of meeting the recommendations. Higher socio-economic status was a determinant of a higher selenium concentration in plasma (ß = 3.1; 95%CI: 0.2-5.9), whereas BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2, and multiparity of a higher copper concentration in plasma (ß = 0.2; 95%CI: 0.03-0.4; ß = 0.2; 95%CI: 0.1-0.4). Higher plasma concentration of vitamin E was noted among women older than 30 years of age comparing to those who were 30 or younger (ß = 1.5; 95%CI: 0.6-2.4). Although more studies are required, especially such based on laboratory measures, our results indicate target groups for dietary interventions during pregnancy for children's optimal health and development.

ABSTRACT

The term "wellness" embraces a wide spectrum of methods that impact the human body by restoring its capabilities and functions, which were previously depleted as a result of increased physical and mental activities such, i.e. sport. Judging by the number of amateur, semi-professional, and professional sporting events at local and national levels, societies consider sports a major part of their everyday lives. A growing percentage of the population is exposing their bodies to various strains, which may result in fatigue, overtraining and injuries, and so the market demand for recovery-related services is on the rise. Therefore, this paper is an overview of the most important and the latest wellness systems and methods applied in today's sport. They divide into three areas: pedagogical, psychological and medical-biological. Among the most popular treatments are: light radiation with infrared rays, cryotherapy, electrotherapy, magnetotherapy, ultrasound and laser therapy, as well as a sauna, paraffin compress, mud compress and brine baths. In a broader context, the paper also acknowledges the growing demand for better body recovery methods and the latest developments in the field of sport physiotherapy.

ABSTRACT

Phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors are currently a widespread and extensively studied group of anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic compounds which may find use in the treatment of numerous lung diseases, including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Several PDE inhibitors are currently in clinical development, and some of them, e.g., roflumilast, are already recommended for clinical use. Due to numerous reports indicating that elevated intracellular cAMP levels may contribute to the alleviation of inflammation and airway fibrosis, new and effective PDE inhibitors are constantly being sought. Recently, a group of 7,8-disubstituted purine-2,6-dione derivatives, representing a novel and prominent pan-PDE inhibitors has been synthesized. Some of them were reported to modulate transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) ion channels as well. In this study, we investigated the effect of selected derivatives (832-a pan-PDE inhibitor, 869-a TRPA1 modulator, and 145-a pan-PDE inhibitor and a weak TRPA1 modulator) on cellular responses related to airway remodeling using MRC-5 human lung fibroblasts. Compound 145 exerted the most considerable effect in limiting fibroblast to myofibroblasts transition (FMT) as well as proliferation, migration, and contraction. The effect of this compound appeared to depend mainly on its strong PDE inhibitory properties, and not on its effects on TRPA1 modulation. The strong anti-remodeling effects of 145 required activation of the cAMP/protein kinase A (PKA)/cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) pathway leading to inhibition of transforming growth factor type ß1 (TGF-ß1) and Smad-dependent signaling in MRC-5 cells. These data suggest that the TGF-ß pathway is a major target for PDE inhibitors leading to inhibitory effects on cell responses involved in airway remodeling. These potent, pan-PDE inhibitors from the group of 7,8-disubstituted purine-2,6-dione derivatives, thus represent promising anti-remodeling drug candidates for further research.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D was studied in regards to its possible impact on body mass reduction and metabolic changes in adults and children with obesity yet there were no studies assessing the impact of vitamin D supplementation during a weight management program in children and adolescence. The aim of our study was to assess the influence of 26 weeks of vitamin D supplementation in overweight and obese children undergoing an integrated 12-months' long weight loss program on body mass reduction, body composition and bone mineral density. METHODS: A double-blind randomized placebo-controlled trial. Vitamin D deficient patients (<30 ng/ml level of vitamin D) aged 6-14, participating in multidisciplinary weight management program were randomly allocated to receiving vitamin D (1200 IU) or placebo for the first 26 weeks of the intervention. RESULTS: Out of the 152 qualified patients, 109 (72%) completed a full cycle of four visits scheduled in the program. There were no difference in the level of BMI (body mass index) change - both raw BMI and BMI centiles. Although the reduction of BMI centiles was greater in the vitamin D vs. placebo group (-4.28 ± 8.43 vs. -2.53 ± 6.10) the difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.319). Similarly the reduction in fat mass-assessed both using bioimpedance and DEXa was achieved, yet the differences between the groups were not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: Our study ads substantial results to support the thesis on no effect of vitamin D supplementation on body weight reduction in children and adolescents with vitamin D insufficiency undergoing a weight management program.

ABSTRACT

Phosphodiesterase 10A (PDE10A) is a double substrate enzyme that hydrolyzes second messenger molecules such as cyclic-3',5'-adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) and cyclic-3',5'-guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). Through this process, PDE10A controls intracellular signaling pathways in the mammalian brain and peripheral tissues. Pharmacological, biochemical, and anatomical data suggest that disorders in the second messenger system mediated by PDE10A may contribute to impairments in the central nervous system (CNS) function, including cognitive deficits as well as disturbances of behavior, emotion processing, and movement. This review provides a detailed description of PDE10A and the recent advances in the design of selective PDE10A inhibitors. The results of preclinical studies regarding the potential utility of PDE10A inhibitors for the treatment of CNS-related disorders, such as schizophrenia as well as Huntington's and Parkinson's diseases are also summarized.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Introduction: In this article, the authors focused on the symptoms of ischemic stroke and the effect of neurorehabilitation methods on the functional status of patients after ischemic stroke. The aim of the study was to evaluate and compare the functional status of patients after ischemic stroke with improved classic kinesiotherapy, classic kinesiotherapy and NDT-Bobath and classic kinesiotherapy and PNF. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Materials and methods: The study involved 120 patients after ischemic stroke. Patients were treated in the Department of Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine USK of Medical University in Lodz. Patients were divided into 3 groups of 40 people. Group 1 was rehabilitated by classical kinesiotherapy. Group 2 was rehabilitated by classic kinesiotherapy and NTD-Bobath. Group 3 was rehabilitated by classical kinesiotherapy and PNF. In all patient groups, magnetostimulation was performed using the Viofor JPS System. The study was conducted twice: before treatment and immediately after 5 weeks after the therapy. The effects of applied neurorehabilitation methods were assessed on the basis of the Rivermead Motor Assessment (RMA). RESULTS: Results: In all three patient groups, functional improvement was achieved. However, a significantly higher improvement was observed in patients in the second group, enhanced with classical kinesitherapy and NDT-Bobath. CONCLUSION: Conclusions: The use of classical kinesiotherapy combined with the NDT-Bobath method is noticeably more effective in improving functional status than the use only classical kinesiotherapy or combination of classical kinesiotherapy and PNF patients after ischemic stroke.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Obesity is associated not only with an array of metabolic disorders (e.g. insulin resistance, hiperinsulinemia, impaired tolerance of glucose, lipid disorders) but also skeletal and joint abnormalities. Recently, a pleiotropic role of vitamin D has been emphasized. Obese children frequently present with vitamin D deficiency, and greater fat mass is associated with lower serum concentration of this vitamin. Although some evidence suggests that weight loss may affect vitamin D status, this issue has not been studied extensively thus far. The aim of a double-blind placebo-controlled study is to assess long-term health effects of vitamin D supplementation in vitamin D deficient obese children participating in an integrated weight-loss programme. METHODS: A randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled trial analysing the effects of vitamin D3 supplementation in overweight or obese vitamin D deficient (<30 ng/ml) children participating in an integrated weight-loss programme. Children are randomized to receive either vitamin D (1200 IU) or placebo for 26 weeks. Primary endpoints include changes in BMI (body mass index), body composition and bone mineral density at the end of the study period, and secondary endpoints - the changes in laboratory parameter reflecting liver and kidney function (transaminases, creatinine) and glucose homeostasis (glucose and insulin levels during oral glucose tolerance test). DISCUSSION: The effects of vitamin D supplementation in obese individuals, especially children, subjected to a weight-loss program are still poorly understood. Considering physiological processes associated with puberty and adolescent growth, we speculate that supplementation may enhance weight reduction and prevent bone loss in obese children deficient in this vitamin. ABSTRACT

UNLABELLED: Gonarthrosis is the most important problem of contemporary medicine. Social and economic aspect of this phenomenon caused the World Health Organization gave it the status of "disease of civilization". AIM: The aim of the study was assessment of the impact chosen models of physiotherapy proceedings on the functional efficiency of patients with the gonarthrosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the study took part in 120 patients of both sexes divided into 4 groups. Group I - 30 patients with the gonarthrosis who have been applied electrostimulation of Kot'z and static exercises with biofeedback of extensors and flexors of the knee joint. Group II - 30 patients with the gonarthrosis who have been applied electrostimulation of Kot'z and dynamic exercises of muscles working on the knee joint. Group III - 30 patients with the gonarthrosis who have been applied static exercises with biofeedback of extensors and flexors of the knee joint, without electrostimulation. Group IV - 30 patients with the gonarthrosis who have been applied dynamic exercises of muscles working on the knee joint, without electrostimulation. Participants in the project were examined twice (before the starting and after finishing rehabilitation) and the level of the functional efficiency of patients was assessed based on results of the Functional Lequesne Index for knee joints. RESULTS: Results collected at this work are confirming the dominant role of the model of therapy from the group I (Kot'z electriostimulation and static exercises with biofeedback) in the forming of the functional efficiency of patients with the gonarthrosis. Results of this group, in the statistically significant way differ from of the patients from the group III (only static exercises) and IV (only dynamic exercises). No significant diferences between groups I and II confirm the tkey role in the forming of the result of Kot'z electrostimulation. CONCLUSIONS: Combination of kinesio exercises and Kot'z electrostimulation influences significally on increasing of the functional efficiency patients with gonarthosis. Out of all analysed models of therapy it turned out that the most effective is combination of "Russian stimulation" and static exercises with biofeedback.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple sclerosis is one of the demyelinating diseases of the central nervous system. The biggest problem of patients affected by this disease are physical limitations which force many times to changes in employment and dependent on their families.The progressive disability significantly reduces the quality of life of patients with MS. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study involved 120 patients with multiple sclerosis at the age of 21 - 81 years. Patients were divided into four groups, and the test was performed three times. In the first group was used laser therapy, group II laser and magnetostimulation, in the third group kinesiotherapy in the fourth group magnetostimulation. In all patients MSQOL (Quality of Life Questionnaire-54) was carried out, this survey analyzed overall assessment of physical health. RESULTS: In all test groups was observed tends to decrease as a result of a point in Quality of Life Questionnaire MSQOL-54 and continuation in this relationship even after cessation of use of these therapies. The correlation between the two groups showed a statistically significant result at the level of p <0.001 in the group I and II in relation to group III and IV. CONCLUSIONS: Synergic action of laser radiation and magnetic stimulation, causing a plurality of changes at the cellular and tissue level, has a beneficial effect on improving functional status, and thereby improves the quality of life of patients with multiple sclerosis. Thanks to physical therapy, it is possible to achieve long-term effects of therapy, which proves the biological hysteresis phenomenon. Such results can not be achieved with using monotherapy only - by kinesiotherapy.

Antecedentes: La implementación de medidas higiénicas y cambios sencillos en la estructura del personal médico puede reducir considerablemente la tasa de bacteriemia asociada al catéter (BAC) en pacientes que reciben nutrición parenteral. Objetivo: Analizar el impacto de los cambios organizacionales dentro de los servicios de nutrición parenteral sobre las tasas de BAC en pacientes pediátricos. Métodos: Hemos comparado las tasas de BAC documentadas antes, durante y después de la implementación de los cambios organizacionales (introducción de un grupo de apoyo nutricional y los procedimientos relacionados, formación del personal médico). Descubrimientos: Un total de 260 series de nutrición parenteral fueron ofrecidos a 141 pacientes pediátricos durante el periodo analizado. Se documentaron treinta BAC durante este periodo. Los factores etiológicos más frecuentes eran staphylococci (21/30), seguidos por Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli y Candida albicans (2/30 cada uno). Los cambios organizacionales fueron reflejados en una reducción de la incidencia de BAC en más de 8 veces: el valor inicial disminuyó desde 10.14 hasta 6.89 por 1000 días-catéter y hasta 1.17 por 1000 días-catéter durante y después de la reorganización, respectivamente. Conclusión: La introducción de un grupo de apoyo nutricional, acompañada de una extensa formación del personal médico puede resultar en una reducción considerable de la tasa de BAC en pacientes pediátricos que reciben nutrición parenteral en en un entorno hospitalario (AU)


Background: Implementation of hygienic measures and simple changes in the structure of medical team may considerably reduce the rate of catheter-related blood stream infections (CRBSIs) in parenterally nourished patients. Aim: To analyze the effects of organizational changes in parenteral nutrition services on the CRBSI rates in pediatric patients. Methods: We compared the CRBSI rates documented prior to, during and after the implementation of the organizational changes (introduction of a nutritional support team and related procedures, medical staff training). Findings: A total of 260 courses of parenteral nutrition were offered to 141 pediatric patients during the analyzed period. Thirty CRBSIs were documented during this period. The most frequent etiological factors were staphylococci (21/30), followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans (2/30 each). The reorganization was reflected by more than8-fold reduction of the CRBSI incidence rate: from the initial value of 10.14 to 6.89 per 1000 catheter days and1.17 per 1000 catheter days during and after the reorganization, respectively. Conclusion: Introduction of a nutritional support team, accompanied by extensive training of medical staff, can result in a marked reduction of CRBSI rate in pediatric patients nourished parenterally in a hospital setting (AU)

ABSTRACT

UNLABELLED: Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, inflammatory, demyelinating disease of the central nervous system, which is characterized by diverse symptomatology. Most often affects people at a young age gradually leading to their disability. Looking for new therapies to alleviate neurological deficits caused by the disease. One of the alternative methods of therapy is high - tone power therapy. The article is a comparison of high-tone power therapy and kinesis in improving patients with multiple sclerosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of high-tone power therapy and exercises in kinesis on the functional status of patients with multiple sclerosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study involved 20 patients with multiple sclerosis, both sexes, treated at the Department of Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine in Lodz. Patients were randomly divided into two groups studied. In group high-tone power therapy applied for 60 minutes, while in group II were used exercises for kinesis. Treatment time for both groups of patients was 15 days. To assess the functional status scale was used: Expanded Disability Status Scale of Kurtzke (EDSS), as well as by Barthel ADL Index. Assessment of quality of life were made using MSQOL Questionnaire-54. For the evaluation of gait and balance using Tinetti scale, and pain VAS rated, and Laitinen. Changes in muscle tone was assessed on the basis of the Ashworth scale. RESULTS: Both group I and II improved on scales conducted before and after therapy. In group I, in which the applied high-tone power therapy, reported statistically significant results in 9 out of 10 tested parameters, while in group II, which was used in the exercises in kinesis an improvement in 6 out of 10 tested parameters. Correlating the results of both the test groups in relation to each other did not show statistically significant differences. CONCLUSIONS: High-Tone Power Therapy beneficial effect on the functional status of patients with multiple sclerosis. Obtaining results in terms of number of tested parameters allows for the use of this therapy in the comprehensive improvement of patients with multiple sclerosis. Exercises from the scheme kinesis favorable impact on the functional status of patients with MS and are essential in the rehabilitation of these patients. In any group, no adverse effects were observed.

ABSTRACT

UNLABELLED: Rehabilitation of upper limb in patients after ischemic stroke is a major challenge for modern neurorehabilitation. Function of upper limb of patients after ischemic stroke returns on the end of the rehabilitation comparing with another parts of the body. Below presents two groups of patients after ischemic stroke who were rehabilitated with use of the following methods: kinesiotherapy combined with NDT- Bobath method and kinesiotherapy only. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of kinesiotherapy only and NDT- Bobath method combined with kinesiotherapy on the functional state and muscle tone of upper limb in patients after ischemic stroke. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study involved a group of 40 patients after ischemic stroke with motor control and muscle tone problems of upper limb. Patients were divided into two groups, each of them included 20 people. Upper limb in group I was rehabilitated with the use of kinesiotherapy exercise however group II with the use of kinesiotherapy exercise combined with NDT- Bobath method (Neurodevelopmental Treatment Bobath). To evaluate the patients before and after rehabilitation muscle tone Asworth scale was used and to assess functional status Rivermead Motor Assessment (RMAIII) scale was used. RESULTS: After 5 weeks of rehabilitation in group II in majority patients were observed decrease of muscle tone and improvement in upper limb functional status. In group I the muscle tone were also decreased and functional status were better but in smaller impact than in II group. CONCLUSIONS: Classical kinesiotherapy combined with the NDT-Bobath method gives better results in neurorehabilitation of upper limb than the use of kinesiotherapy exercises only in patients after ischemic stroke.

BACKGROUND: Implementation of hygienic measures and simple changes in the structure of medical team may considerably reduce the rate of catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs) in parenterally nourished patients. AIM: To analyze the effects of organizational changes in parenteral nutrition services on the CRBSI rates in pediatric patients. METHODS: We compared the CRBSI rates documented prior to, during and after the implementation of the organizational changes (introduction of a nutritional support team and related procedures, medical staff training). FINDINGS: A total of 260 courses of parenteral nutrition were offered to 141 pediatric patients during the analyzed period. Thirty CRBSIs were documented during this period. The most frequent etiological factors were staphylococci (21/30), followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans (2/30 each). The reorganization was reflected by more than 8-fold reduction of the CRBSI incidence rate: from the initial value of 10.14 to 6.89 per 1000 catheter days and 1.17 per 1000 catheter days during and after the reorganization, respectively. CONCLUSION: Introduction of a nutritional support team, accompanied by extensive training of medical staff, can result in a marked reduction of CRBSI rate in pediatric patients nourished parenterally in a hospital setting.


Antecedentes: La implementación de medidas higiénicas y cambios sencillos en la estructura del personal médico puede reducir considerablemente la tasa de bacteriemia asociada al catéter (BAC) en pacientes que reciben nutrición parenteral. Objetivo: Analizar el impacto de los cambios organizacionales dentro de los servicios de nutrición parenteral sobre las tasas de BAC en pacientes pediátricos. Métodos: Hemos comparado las tasas de BAC documentadas antes, durante y después de la implementación de los cambios organizacionales (introducción de un grupo de apoyo nutricional y los procedimientos relacionados, formación del personal médico). Descubrimientos: Un total de 260 series de nutrición parenteral fueron ofrecidos a 141 pacientes pediátricos durante el periodo analizado. Se documentaron treinta BAC durante este periodo. Los factores etiológicos más frecuentes eran staphylococci (21/30), seguidos por Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli y Candida albicans (2/30 cada uno). Los cambios organizacionales fueron reflejados en una reducción de la incidencia de BAC en más de 8 veces: el valor inicial disminuyó desde 10.14 hasta 6.89 por 1000 días-catéter y hasta 1.17 por 1000 días-catéter durante y después de la reorganización, respectivamente. Conclusión: La introducción de un grupo de apoyo nutricional, acompañada de una extensa formación del personal médico puede resultar en una reducción considera ble de la tasa de BAC en pacientes pediátricos que reciben nutrición parenteral en en un entorno hospitalario.

UNLABELLED: The ischemic stroke is a disease of the central nervous system. Up until today there have been very few scientific findings concerning the most effective methods of patients rehabilitation. The authors of this article present two groups of patients after ischemic stroke who were rehabilitated with use of the following methods: kinesiotherapy combined with PNF (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation) method and kinesiotherapy only. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of kinesiotherapy only and PNF method combined with kinesiotherapy on the functional state and muscle tone in patients after ischaemic stroke. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study involved a group of 30 patients after ischaemic stroke. Patients were divided into two groups, each of them comprising 15 people. Group I was rehabilitated with the use of kinesiotherapy exercise and group II with the use of kinesiotherapy exercise combined with PNF method. To evaluate the patient before and after rehabilitation muscle tone Asworth scale was used and to assess functional status Rivermed Motor Assessment (RMA) scale was used. RESULTS: Both in group I and II an improvement in muscle tone and functional status were noted. Better results were observed in group II in which patients were rehabilitated with the use of kinesiotherapy exercise combined with PNF method. All results in group I and II displayed a statistically significant improvement in functional status and muscle tone. CONCLUSIONS: The use of the classical kinesiotherapy only had a noticeably smaller impact on improvement of functional status and muscle tone in patients from group I than the use of both: classical kinesiotherapy and PNF method which were employed in group II.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the intensity of oxidative damage in human milk resulting from maternal oxidative stress. The aim of our study was to explore the changes in Total Antioxidant Status (TAS) and concentrations of antioxidative vitamins and isoprostanes (markers of oxidative stress) in human colostrum and mature milk. METHODS: The study included 49 postpartum women with normal, spontaneous full term delivery. The exclusion criteria included active and passive smoking, acute and chronic disorders, and pharmacotherapy other than vitamin supplementation. Colostrum samples were collected on the 3rd day after delivery and breast milk samples between the 30th and the 32nd day after delivery. TAS of colostrum/breast milk was determined by Rice-Evans and Miller method. The amount of vitamins A and E was measured by HPLC. Isoprostane concentrations in colostrum/mature milk and urine were determined immunoenzymatically. RESULTS: No significant differences were observed in maternal dietary intakes of vitamins A and E determined prior to the colostrum and mature milk sampling. The TAS of mature milk was significantly higher compared to colostrum (P=0.002), while vitamin A and E concentrations were significantly lower (P=0.003 and P=0.001). Although the isoprostane concentration of mature milk was significantly higher than the colostrum concentration, this difference was not significant (P=0.129). CONCLUSION: Human milk is a source of antioxidative vitamins and their concentrations decrease throughout the lactation, while their total antioxidative properties increase. The phase of lactation does not affect the degree of human milk's lipid oxidative damage.
