ABSTRACT

UNLABELLED: The efficiency of transcutaneous and intravesical temporary electrostimulation were evaluated in patients with neurogenic and non-neurogenic voiding dysfunction. Non-invasive electrostimulation was performed in 42 children with voiding dysfunction, at the age of 4 months to 15 years. In 5 children rectal electrode and impulse frequency of 50 Hz was used because of incompetent urethral function. In 9 children with detrusor overactivity rectal electrode and impulse frequency of 5 Hz was used. In 12 girls with discoordinated voiding electrostimulation with rectal electrode was used in biofeedback training. In one case intravesical electrostimulation was used in a girl with lazy bladder syndrome. In 15 patients with neurogenic voiding dysfunction intravesical electrostimulation was used to improve bladder sensation. The efficiency of the treatment was evaluated on the base of urodynamic investigation and patients' observations. The improvement was observed in 3 children from the group with urethral incompetence, both in urodynamic parameters and subjective patients' observations. One girl claimed no change in continence despite improvement in cystometric and profilometric testing. In one girl no change in urodynamic evaluation and continence was observed. Good results were observed in the group of 9 girls in which electrostimulation with rectal electrode was a part of the biofeedback training in discoordinated voiding. In the group of 9 children in whom electrostimulation with rectal electrode was used because of detrusor overactivity in 5 cases improvement in cystometric capacity was estimated. The estimation of usefulness of the intravesical electrostimulation in patients with neurogenic voiding dysfunction is not possible because of too short time of observation and the age of patients. We had to stop stimulation with rectal electrode in one patient because of inflammation of the skin in perineal region caused by cystitis. In two children stimulated with intravesical electrodes a new infection of urinary tract was observed. CONCLUSIONS: 1. Electrostimulation is a non-invasive, save method in the treatment of voiding dysfunction. 2. Electrostimulation with rectal electrodes is an effective method of treatment in cases of urethral incompetence, and an alternative method of treatment for detrusor overactivity. 3. Electrostimulation with rectal electrodes is an additional tool in biofeedback training of discoordinated voiding.

ABSTRACT

Studies were undertaken to evaluate the influence of Ukrain on the postoperative period in patients with breast cancer. The group under Ukrain medication was comprised of 10 patients in stage T1-3NO-1MO. The control group was comprised of 22 patients in the same clinical and laboratory staging as those treated with Ukrain in the first year of postoperative follow-up metastatic lymph nodes were observed in one patient from the control group. It is planned to enlarge the groups and to continue the observation up to the third year to obtain reliable and more statistically significant data.

ABSTRACT

Studies were undertaken to evaluate the influence of Ukrain on clinical and laboratory parameters in ten patients with breast cancer treated with the drug in the preoperative phase. The control group was composed of eight patients of similar age and advancement of the disease who did not receive Ukrain before mastectomy. Data from the present studies indicate that the drug is distinctly helpful from the surgical viewpoint by increasing tumour hardness and enlargement of metastatic lymph nodes. Furthermore, treatment with it is fully safe, with no side effects or allergic reactions.

ABSTRACT

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the influence of Ukrain on the hormonal status of ten patients with breast cancer, treated in the preoperative phase by Ukrain. A control group consisted of eight patients of similar age and advancement of the disease, who did not receive the drug before mastectomy. The data were compared to those obtained in ten healthy women of similar age. The results indicate that Ukrain only slightly influences the hormonal dynamics and its destructive mode of action on neoplastic tissue does not significantly affect hormonal activities.

ABSTRACT

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the influence of Ukrain on immune parameters in ten patients with breast cancer, treated with the drug in the preoperative phase. The control group consisted of eight patients of similar age and advancement of the disease, who did not receive Ukrain before mastectomy. The data were compared with the parameters obtained in 15 healthy blood donors. It was found that treatment with Ukrain distinctly regulates cellular and, slightly, humoral immunity, non-specific immunity and also complement activity.

ABSTRACT

TTP is a new immunomodulating drug of natural origin, registered in Poland for human use. In the randomised, double blind study to assess the therapeutic efficacy of the Tolpa Torf Preparation (TTP) in the recurrent respiratory tract infectious participated 39 young patients (age 16-22). TTP was administered orally, 5 mg daily for three weeks. During 3 months follow-up period favourable results of treatment were obtained in 14 of 20 TTP treated patients and in 8 of 19 of the placebo patients. The therapeutic effects were seen even after the 6 months follow-up period. The phagocytic activity of granulocytes was significantly stimulated in the TTP--treated patients but not in the placebo-treated patients. The results suggest that TTP is effective drug in the treatment of recurrent respiratory tract infections with undefined infectious etiology. In the period of the treatment as well as during 6 months observation no side effects were noticed.

ABSTRACT

The preferred solution conformation of the PRP-hexapeptide (Tyr-Val-Pro-Leu-Phe-Pro) and of some of its structural analogues was investigated by NMR-spectroscopy, spectrofluorimetry and computer simulation technic. It was found that the preferred conformation is characterized by cis'-conformation of Pro3 and the gamma-turn on the Leu4-residue: for Val2 and Phe5 a beta-structure seems to be privileged. In such a conformation Val2 and Leu4 residues occupy exactly the same positions in space as residues i and i + 3 in an alpha-helix. It suggests that the PRP-hexapeptide can interact with receptor protein inducing or stabilizing its helical conformation by "knobs into holes" packing.

ABSTRACT

Selected immunologic parameters and effectivity of immunotherapy was evaluated in 117 children (12-month-10-year-1-old) suffering from recurrent respiratory tract infections. All the children displayed a profound depression of T lymphocytes number, which resemble the situation seen in AIDS patients. An increase of serum IgM concentration was also noted. Immunotherapy included treatment with the following preparations: TFX and Levamisol which stimulate T cell functions, Broncho-Vaxom which stimulates specific antibody production and a complex herb preparation PADMA showing undefined general stimulatory activity. Separate group of children was subjected to climatotherapy in Czerniawa Sanatorium and received no immunostimulants. All methods of treatment employed had beneficial effect. The highest percentage of positive results was obtained in children receiving TFX and Levamisol. In all groups under study, an elevation of T cells percentage was observed. This was especially evident in Levamisol treated patients. There was no correlation, however, between T cells number and clinical improvement.

ABSTRACT

Experimental studies were carried our on children with extrinsic, intrinsic and mixed type asthma, treated balneologically in a sanatorium. Serum concentrations of immunoglobulins A, G, M, E and D, and serum enzyme inhibitor alpha1-antitrypsin were determined. The results were compared with those obtained in healthy children, and were also analysed in aspects of clinical and aetiological classification of asthma. Authors observed the therapeutic benefit of balneological treatment in childhood asthma. Asthmatic symptoms in children disappeared, or were much less pronounced. Mean immunoglobulin levels, before treatment higher than in healthy children, did not change after treatment, except IgE and IgG. Clinical improvement was accompanied by a significantly increasing IgG level.
