ABSTRACT

Although both capecitabine plus oxaliplatin (CAPOX) and S-1 are accepted as adjuvant chemotherapy following gastrectomy for gastric cancer, the better option between the two is still controversial. We conducted a retrospective nationwide cohort study using data from the National Health Insurance Service of Korea. We included patients who underwent gastrectomy for a primary diagnosis of gastric cancer between January 1, 2013, and December 31, 2018. The study compared the survival outcomes of patients who received postoperative chemotherapy based on S-1 (Arm S) vs. CAPOX (Arm C), as well as other relevant clinical variables such as comorbidity and completion of planned treatment. A total of 6602 patients were included in the analysis, with 4199 in Arm S and 2403 in Arm C. After propensity score matching, the final study population consisted of 2067 patients in each arm. Arm C showed statistically inferior 5-year overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) rates compared to Arm S (84.0% vs. 90.0%; p < 0.0001; and 78.4% vs. 86.1%; p < 0.0001). Age (65 ≥ vs. < 65) and the incomplete planned treatment also had a significant negative effect on both OS and DFS. In the multivariable analysis, Arm C still showed worse OS (hazard ratio [HR], 1.609; 95% confidence intervals [CI], 1.339-1.934; p < 0.0001) and DFS (HR, 1.552; 95% CI 1.333-1.807; p < 0.0001) than Arm S. Both S-1 and CAPOX showed excellent efficacy, but this nationwide cohort study suggests that S-1 may be a better option in certain clinical situations.

ABSTRACT

The infant auditory system rapidly matures across the first years of life, with a primary goal of obtaining ever-more-accurate real-time representations of the external world. Our understanding of how left and right auditory cortex neural processes develop during infancy, however, is meager, with few studies having the statistical power to detect potential hemisphere and sex differences in primary/secondary auditory cortex maturation. Using infant magnetoencephalography (MEG) and a cross-sectional study design, left and right auditory cortex P2m responses to pure tones were examined in 114 typically developing infants and toddlers (66 males, 2 to 24 months). Non-linear maturation of P2m latency was observed, with P2m latencies decreasing rapidly as a function of age during the first year of life, followed by slower changes between 12 and 24 months. Whereas in younger infants auditory tones were encoded more slowly in the left than right hemisphere, similar left and right P2m latencies were observed by ∼21 months of age due to faster maturation rate in the left than right hemisphere. No sex differences in the maturation of the P2m responses were observed. Finally, an earlier left than right hemisphere P2m latency predicted better language performance in older infants (12 to 24 months). Findings indicate the need to consider hemisphere when examining the maturation of auditory cortex neural activity in infants and toddlers and show that the pattern of left-right hemisphere P2m maturation is associated with language performance.

ABSTRACT

Various therapeutic approaches, including supplemental nutritional support, have been tried for the treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD). Previous studies have reported the role of vitamin D in the treatment of AD with inconsistent results. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of vitamin D in the treatment of AD, with considerations on the heterogeneities of AD. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the efficacy of vitamin D supplementation for AD treatment, published before June 30, 2021 were identified in the PubMed, EMBASE, MEDLINE, and Cochrane Library databases. The quality of evidence was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation system. This meta-analysis included 5 RCTs with 304 cases of AD. We found that vitamin D supplementation did not decrease AD severity, even when AD was classified as severe vs non-severe. However, vitamin D supplementation was found to be effective in the treatment of AD in RCTs that included both children and adults, but not in those that included only children. Geographic location was associated with a significant difference in the therapeutic effect of vitamin D supplementation. Moreover, vitamin D supplementation of > 2,000 IU/day decreased AD severity, but supplementation ≤ 2,000 IU/day did not. Vitamin D supplementation, in general, was not effective for the treatment of AD. However, vitamin D supplementation might provide a therapeutic effect depending on the geographic location and dose of supplementation. The results of the present meta-analysis suggest that vitamin D supplementation might be targeted for patients with AD who may benefit from vitamin D supplementation.

ABSTRACT

Maturation of auditory cortex neural encoding processes was assessed in children with typical development (TD) and autism. Children 6-9 years old were enrolled at Time 1 (T1), with follow-up data obtained ~ 18 months later at Time 2 (T2), and ~ 36 months later at Time 3 (T3). Findings suggested an initial period of rapid auditory cortex maturation in autism, earlier than TD (prior to and surrounding the T1 exam), followed by a period of faster maturation in TD than autism (T1-T3). As a result of group maturation differences, post-stimulus group differences were observed at T1 but not T3. In contrast, stronger pre-stimulus activity in autism than TD was found at all time points, indicating this brain measure is stable across time.

Few studies have investigated the effects of calcium supplementation on cardiovascular outcomes in individuals with low calcium intake in real-world settings. This study examined the association between calcium supplementation and cardiovascular outcomes in the Korean population in a real-world setting. This large retrospective cohort study included patients aged ≥45 years first prescribed calcium supplements in 2010. Age- and sex-matched controls were recruited among those who had no prescription for calcium supplements. Longitudinal data were collected on 31 December 2018. Kaplan−Meier estimation and Cox proportional hazard regression analysis were performed. The cumulative incidence of acute myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, and death was significantly higher in the calcium supplementation group than in the control group (p < 0.05 by log-rank test). The calcium supplementation group had a significantly higher risk of myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, and death than the control group. Compared to the control group, the hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) of the incidence of myocardial infarction, stroke, and death in the supplementation group were 1.14 (1.03−1.27), 1.12 (1.05−1.20), and 1.40 (1.32−1.50), respectively, after adjusting for confounding variables. Considering the associated cardiovascular risk, calcium supplementation for osteoporosis treatment should be administered cautiously.

ABSTRACT

Many plants have been used in Korean medicine for treating insomnia. However, scientific evidence for their sedative activity has not been fully investigated. Thus, this study was carried out to investigate the sedative effects of the extracts of medicinal plants, including Yukmijihwang-tang and its various modified forms through the 5-HT2c receptor binding assay, and to further confirm its sleep-promoting effects and the underlying neural mechanism in rats utilizing electroencephalography (EEG) analysis. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to measure serotonin (5-HT) in the brain. The water extracts of modified Yukmijihwang-tang (YmP) displayed binding affinity to the 5-HT2C receptor (IC50 value of 199.9 µg/mL). YmP (50 mg/kg) administration decreased wake time and increased REM and NREM sleep based on EEG data in rats. Additionally, treatment with YmP significantly increased the 5-HT level in the hypothalamus. In conclusion, the sedative effect of YmP can be attributed to the activation of the central serotonergic systems, as evidenced by the high affinity of binding of the 5-HT2C receptor and increased 5-HT levels in the brain of the rat. This study suggests that YmP can be a new material as a sleep inducer in natural products.

Background and Objectives: It is crucial to prevent osteoporosis in patients receiving long-term glucocorticoid (GC) treatment. This study aimed to investigate the frequency and associated factors of preventive care for glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis (GIOP) in Korea. Materials and Methods: Using the Korean National Health Insurance Service database, we identified 37,133 individuals aged ≥ 20 years who commenced long-term (≥90 days) oral GC between 2011 and 2012. High-quality GIOP preventive care was defined as either a bone mineral density (BMD) test, calcium and/or vitamin D supplementation, or prescription osteoporosis medications within 6 months of GC initiation. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) for associated factors for high-quality GIOP preventive care. Results: The mean age was 49.8 years, and 18,476 (49.8%) patients were female. The frequency of high-quality GIOP preventive care was only 3.68% (BMD test, 1.46%; osteoporosis medications, 1.65%; calcium/vitamin D, 1.63%). Increasing age (OR = 2.53, p < 0.001; 40-49 years, OR = 3.99, p < 0.001; 50-59 years, OR = 5.17, p < 0.001; 60-69 years, OR = 8.07, p < 0.001; ≥70 years, respectively), systemic autoimmune disease (OR = 3.08, p < 0.001), rural residence (OR = 1.19, p = 0.046), concomitant hyperthyroidism (OR = 1.58, p = 0.007), and malignancy (OR = 1.59, p < 0.001) were significantly associated with a higher likelihood of receiving high-quality GIOP preventive care. Male sex (OR = 0.26, p < 0.001) and GC prescription in primary care clinics and nursing hospitals (OR = 0.66, p < 0.001) were associated with a lower rate of high-quality GIOP preventive care. Conclusions: Most Korean patients treated with GC did not receive appropriate preventive care for GIOP in real-world practice. More efforts are needed by clinicians to prevent, screen, and treat GIOP.

Ginger, a plant widely consumed worldwide, is used as a spice or to enhance the flavor of foods. In this study, the taste characteristics (gingerol, shogaol, and amino acid) of extracts treated with various solubilizing methods were objectively compared. In addition, an E-nose confirmed the flavor pattern combined with principal component analysis (PCA) between each extract gas chromatogram-tandem mass spectrometry was performed to compare and analyze volatile compounds between extraction methods. As a result, high-pressure enzyme-assisted extraction (HPE) and hydrothermal enzyme-assisted extraction (HWE) treatment effectively improved the extraction yield of ginger and the contents of gingerol and shogaol and removed the bitter taste. In addition, radar charts of both E-nose and PCA provided the distribution of flavor substances in HPE and HWE products of ginger. After enzyme-assisted treatment, a strong fruity and piquant flavor was noted. In conclusion, it is suggested that ginger extract of enzyme-assisted treatment has increased flavor compounds and can be an excellent food material.

ABSTRACT

Associations between age, resting-state (RS) peak-alpha-frequency (PAF = frequency showing largest amplitude alpha activity), and thalamic volume (thalamus thought to modulate alpha activity) were examined to understand differences in RS alpha activity between children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and typically-developing children (TDC) noted in prior studies. RS MEG and structural-MRI data were obtained from 51 ASD and 70 TDC 6- to 18-year-old males. PAF and thalamic volume maturation were observed in TDC but not ASD. Although PAF was associated with right thalamic volume in TDC (R2 = 0.12, p = 0.01) but not ASD (R2 = 0.01, p = 0.35), this group difference was not large enough to reach significance. Findings thus showed unusual maturation of brain function and structure in ASD as well as an across-group thalamic contribution to alpha rhythms.

BACKGROUND: Sword bean (SB; Canavalia gladiata) is a perennial vine used as a food and medicinal plant in Asia. SB is rich in nutrients, such as flavonoids and urease, and has various functions, including beneficial effects on dysentery, nausea, and hemorrhoids, as well as anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity. Various plant parts are used; however, little is known about the physiological effects of SB pods (SBP). In this study, the anti-obesity effects of SBP extract were evaluated. METHODS: To investigate the anti-obesity effects of SBP extract, we confirmed the SBP extract downregulated lipogenesis-related genes and upregulated genes involved in lipolysis and brown adipocyte markers in differentiated C3H10T1/2 adipocytes in vitro. Next, we use a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity mouse model to determine the anti-obesity effects of SBP extract. RESULTS: Treatment with SBP extract significantly reduced adipocytes. The extract decreased the HFD-induced increases in body weight and plasma triglyceride levels in mice after 8 weeks. mRNA and protein levels of the adipogenesis and lipogenesis-related factors CCAAT/enhancer binding protein-ß, CCAAT/enhancer binding protein-α, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPARγ), and their target genes Ap2, SREBP-1c, FAS, and SCD-1 were reduced by SBP extract. In contrast, AMP-activated protein kinase and sirtuin1, involved in the thermogenic catabolism of fat, were activated by SBP extract in adipocytes and white adipose tissue, increasing the expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator-1α, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-α (PPARα), and uncoupling protein 1 and activating thermogenic activity. CONCLUSION: SBP extract exerts an anti-obesity effect by inhibiting lipogenesis-related factors and activating fat-catabolizing factors; it is, therefore, a promising functional food and natural anti-obesity agent.

Mulberry (Morus alba L.) fruit (MF) is a rich source of functional compounds, such as anthocyanin. However, during solvent extraction, these compounds are not fully dispersed into the substrate, leading to incomplete extraction. Moreover, raw MF rapidly ripens and deteriorates after harvesting; hence, innovative methods to process MF are needed. Here, a pectinase-assisted extraction method is developed to liberate polyphenols and anthocyanins from cell wall matrices in MF. We optimized the procedure to maximize water solubility index (WSI), total phenolic (TP) content, and total anthocyanin (TA) content using a central composite design to perform a response surface methodology (RSM) analysis. The optimal conditions predicted by the RSM were a 1:5 w/v material/water ratio with 3.5% pectinase (v/w) and 1.5% citric acid (w/w) for 113 min at 50°C. Under these conditions, the WSI, TP, and TA were significantly higher compared with those in the untreated control. The results well matched (within 5% differences) with the predicted RSM values. Furthermore, metabolite analysis revealed that the levels of cyanidin-3-O-glucoside, delphinidin hexoside, and quercetin were higher in pectinase-assisted MF extraction compared with the untreated control. This work demonstrated that pectinase-assisted extraction using citric acid could be an efficient technique to enhance the value of MF and its potential applications in the food industry. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: A pectinase-assisted extraction method was optimized to enhance the WSI, TP, and TA yields from MF extracts. The optimal conditions were predicted to be 1:5 w/v material/water ratio, 3.5% pectinase (v/w), and 1.5% CA (w/w) with a 113 min reaction time at 50°C. Under these conditions, WSI, TP, and TA were significantly increased compared with the untreated control. These results suggested the potential of mulberry plants for use in the food industry via the development of a simple, efficient process to extract functional compounds from MF.

This study aimed to comparatively analyze the volatile flavor of rooibos tea (Aspalathus linearis) obtained by two commonly used flavor extraction methods, simultaneous distillation-extraction (SDE) and steam distillation under reduced pressure (DRP). The tea obtained by the two extraction methods, were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to identify volatile aroma-related compounds. Descriptive sensory analysis of the extracted rooibos tea flavor was carried out by a trained panel (n = 7). Fifty volatile compounds were identified, including 26 and 25 aroma-active compounds by SDE (45.9 µg/g) and DRP (37.5 µg/g), respectively. SDE recovered larger quantities of alcohols, acids, and esters, whereas DRP was useful for analyzing thermally unstable volatile compounds, including various alcohols, aldehydes, and hydrocarbons. Descriptive sensory analysis revealed that ketones and phenolic compounds may be responsible for the sensory attributes woody and grassy green, whereas the aldehydes and acidic compounds may contribute to floral and fruity.

Mulberry (Morus alba L.) leaves (MLs), originally used to feed silkworms, have recently been recognized as a food ingredient containing health-beneficial, bioactive compounds. In this study, the extrusion process was applied for the enhancement of the amount of extractable flavonoids from MLs. Extrusion conditions were optimized by water solubility index, total phenolic content, and total flavonoid content (TF) using response surface methodology, and antioxidative stress activities were evaluated in macrophage cells. According to the significance of regression coefficients of TF, the optimal extrusion parameters were set as barrel temperature of 114 °C, moisture feed content of 20%, and screw speed of 232 rpm. Under these conditions, the TF of extruded ML reached to 0.91% and improved by 63% compared with raw ML. Fifteen flavonoids were analyzed using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatograph coupled with photodiode array detection and quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-PDA-QTOF/MS), and the extrusion resulted in increases in quercetin-3-gentiobioside, quercetin-3,7-di-O-glucoside, kaempferol-3,7-di-O-glucoside, rutin, isoquercitrin, and moragrol C. Besides, regarding antioxidative activity, extruded ML water extract inhibited the production of H2O2-induced reactive oxygen species and attenuated nuclear morphology alterations in macrophage cells. The findings of this study should be useful in food processing design to improve the extractable functional compounds in MLs.

ABSTRACT

Solobacterium moorei is an anaerobic gram-positive bacillus that rarely causes bacteremia. Herein, we report a case of S. moorei bacteremia associated with acute cholangitis in a patient without malignancy. The patient had a history of chronic pancreatitis with pancreaticogastrostomy and presented with fever and abdominal pain. Computed tomography scans showed acute cholangitis and S. moorei identified in blood cultures were confirmed by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry and 16S rRNA sequencing. The patient was successfully treated with endoscopic retrograde biliary drainage and antibiotics including meropenem and piperacillin-tazobactam.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a major cause of irreversible loss of vision with 80-90% of patients demonstrating dry type AMD. Dry AMD could possibly be prevented by polyphenol-rich medicinal foods by the inhibition of N-retinylidene-N-retinylethanolamine (A2E)-induced oxidative stress and cell damage. Arctium lappa L. (AL) leaves are medicinal and have antioxidant activity. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the protective effects of the extract of AL leaves (ALE) on dry AMD models, including in vitro A2E-induced damage in ARPE-19 cells, a human retinal pigment epithelial cell line, and in vivo light-induced retinal damage in BALB/c mice. According to the total phenolic contents (TPCs), total flavonoid contents (TFCs) and antioxidant activities, ALE was rich in polyphenols and had antioxidant efficacies on 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), and 2',7'-dichlorofluorescin diacetate (DCFDA) assays. The effects of ALE on A2E accumulation and A2E-induced cell death were also monitored. Despite continued exposure to A2E (10 µM), ALE attenuated A2E accumulation in APRE-19 cells with levels similar to lutein. A2E-induced cell death at high concentration (25 µM) was also suppressed by ALE by inhibiting the apoptotic signaling pathway. Furthermore, ALE could protect the outer nuclear layer (ONL) in the retina from light-induced AMD in BALB/c mice. In conclusion, ALE could be considered a potentially valuable medicinal food for dry AMD.

ABSTRACT

Clinical applications of ginger with an expectation of clinical benefits are receiving significant attention. This systematic review aims to provide a comprehensive discussion in terms of the clinical effects of ginger in all reported areas. Following the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) guideline, randomized controlled trials on the effects of ginger were investigated. Accordingly, 109 eligible papers were fully extracted in terms of study design, population characteristics, evaluation systems, adverse effects, and main outcomes. The reporting quality of the included studies was assessed based on the Cochrane Collaboration's tool for assessing the risk of bias in randomized trials and integrated together with studies that investigated the same subjects. The included studies that examined the improvement of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy, inflammation, metabolic syndromes, digestive function, and colorectal cancer's markers were consistently supported, whereas other expected functions were relatively controversial. Nevertheless, only 43 clinical trials (39.4%) met the criterion of having a 'high quality of evidence.' In addition to the quality assessment result, small populations and unstandardized evaluation systems were the observed shortcomings in ginger clinical trials. Further studies with adequate designs are warranted to validate the reported clinical functions of ginger.

ABSTRACT

The delivery of active probiotic cells in capsules can reduce probiotic cell loss induced by detrimental external factors during digestion. In this study, we determined the optimal conditions for the encapsulation of Weissella cibaria JW15 (JW15) within calcium and polyethylene glycol (PEG)-alginate with chicory root extract powder (CREP). JW15 was encapsulated as the core material (109 cells/mL, 2 mL/min), and a solution containing a mixture of 1.5% sodium alginate and 1% CREP was extruded into a receiving bath with 0.1 M calcium chloride (CaCl2 ) and 0.05% PEG. Capsule morphology and size were measured using optical microscopy. The optimal air pressure and frequency vibration for capsules containing alginate only (Al) were 200 mbar and 200 Hz, respectively and 100 mbar and 350 Hz for capsules containing alginate with CREP (Ch), respectively. The voltage for both capsules types was fixed at 1.35 kV. Then, the capsules were incubated in a simulated gastrointestinal (GI) system for 6 hr at 37 °C. The addition of PEG in a CaCl2 hardening solution led to degradation of the Ch capsule (Ch-PEG) and the release of cells into the small intestine vessel in the simulated GI system. By contrast, the cells were trapped within the Al capsules. Based on these data, effective encapsulation using alginate with CREP and PEG can enable JW15 to be released at a targeted anatomical site of activity within the GI system, thereby, enhancing the efficacy of probiotic cells. These protective effects can be leveraged during the development of probiotic products. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Weissella cibaria JW15 (109 cells/mL) was encapsulated in biodegradable and biocompatible capsules, prepared by mixing 1.5% alginate with 1% chicory root extract powder (CREP) in 0.1 M CaCl2 and 0.05% PEG using an encapsulator. The optimal processing parameters were as follows: pressure, 100 mbar; vibration frequency, 350 Hz; voltage, 1.35 kV; and core flow rate, 2 mL/min. When the resulting capsules were subjected to a simulated gastrointestinal system for 6 hr, the cells were released into the small intestine, and up to 95% cell viability was preserved. These results suggest that capsules made from alginate with CREP and formulated using calcium and PEG are a promising delivery system for probiotic cells.

Abnormal auditory discrimination neural processes, indexed by mismatch fields (MMFs) recorded by magnetoencephalography (MEG), have been reported in verbal children with ASD. Association with clinical measures indicates that delayed MMF components are associated with poorer language and communication performance. At present, little is known about neural correlates of language and communication skills in extremely language impaired (minimally-verbal/non-verbal) children who have ASD: ASD-MVNV. It is hypothesized that MMF delays observed in language-impaired but nonetheless verbal children with ASD will be exacerbated in ASD-MVNV. The present study investigated this hypothesis, examining MMF responses bilaterally during an auditory oddball paradigm with vowel stimuli in ASD-MVNV, in a verbal ASD cohort without cognitive impairment and in typically developing (TD) children. The verbal ASD cohort without cognitive impairment was split into those demonstrating considerable language impairment (CELF core language index <85; "ASD-LI") versus those with less or no language impairment (CELF CLI >85; "ASD-V"). Eighty-four participants (8-12 years) were included in final analysis: ASD-MVNV: n = 9, 9.67 ± 1.41 years, ASD: n = 48, (ASD-V: n = 27, 10.55 ± 1.21 years, ASD-LI: n = 21, 10.67 ± 1.20 years) and TD: n = 27, 10.14 ± 1.38 years. Delayed MMF latencies were found bilaterally in ASD-MVNV compared to verbal ASD (both ASD-V and ASD-LI) and TD children. Delayed MMF responses were associated with diminished language and communication skills. Furthermore, whereas the TD children showed leftward lateralization of MMF amplitude, ASD-MVNV and verbal ASD (ASD-V and ASD-LI) showed abnormal rightward lateralization. Findings suggest delayed auditory discrimination processes and abnormal rightward laterality as objective markers of language/communication skills in both verbal and MVNV children who have ASD. The M50 and M100 auditory evoked responses reflect early auditory processes in the primary/secondary auditory cortex. Although previous M50 and M100 studies have been conducted on individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and indicate disruption of encoding simple sensory information, analogous investigations of the neural correlates of auditory processing through development from children into adults are very limited. Magnetoencephalography was used to record signals arising from the left and right superior temporal gyrus during auditory presentation of tones to children/adolescents and adults with ASD as well as typically developing (TD) controls. One hundred and thirty-two participants (aged 6-42 years) were included into the final analyses (children/adolescents: TD, n = 36, 9.21 ± 1.6 years; ASD, n = 58, 10.07 ± 2.38 years; adults: TD, n = 19, 26.97 ± 1.29 years; ASD, n = 19, 23.80 ± 6.26 years). There were main effects of group on M50 and M100 latency (p < 0.001) over hemisphere and frequency. Delayed M50 and M100 latencies were found in participants with ASD compared to the TD group, and earlier M50 and M100 latencies were associated with increased age. Furthermore, there was a statistically significant association between language ability and both M50 and M100 latencies. Importantly, differences in M50 and M100 latencies between TD and ASD cohorts, often reported in children, persisted into adulthood, with no evidence supporting latency convergence.

Skeletal muscle atrophy is a condition characterized by damaged muscle fibers and reduced numbers of muscle cells due to various causes. Muscle atrophy is associated with chronic diseases, such as heart failure, diabetes, and aging-related diseases. Isobavachalcone (IBC) is a flavonoid found in various foods and natural products, and studies have investigated its diverse effects, including its neuroprotective and anticancer effects. However, no studies have evaluated the effects of IBC on muscle atrophy. Thus, in this study, we assessed the effects of IBC on prevention of muscle atrophy. To evaluate the preventive effects of IBC on muscle atrophy, we used C2C12 myoblasts and induced muscle atrophy by tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α. IBC regulated the expression levels of muscle atrophy F-box and muscle RING finger-1 in response to damaged muscle cells, thereby restoring the expression of myosin heavy chain and myogenin. Moreover, IBC regulated the phosphorylation of the nuclear factor-κB and p38 and upregulated the expression of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 and heme oxygenase-1, which are involved in regulating oxidative stress. Our results indicated that IBC acted to relieve TNF-α-induced skeletal muscle atrophy by regulating the factors related to inflammation and oxidative stress.
