ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of electroacupuncture therapy on postoperative rehabilitation training of patients with knee fractures. METHODS: Patients with knee fractures from July 2020 to July 2021 were randomly assigned to either the experimental group or a control group according to the double-blind principle. Both groups were given surgical treatment and postoperative conventional rehabilitation training. There were 40 cases in the control group, including 27 males and 13 females;the age ranged from 20 to 66 years old with an average of (36.46±6.29) years old, continuous passive motion (CPM) training was performed after operation. There were 40 patients in the experimental group, including 24 males and 16 females. The age ranged from 21 to 68 years old with an average of (37.62±7.08) years old, on the basis of the control group, electroacupuncture was given. After 4 weeks of intervention, the excellent rate of knee function score, visual analogue scale (VAS) before and after intervention, serum pain mediators, prostaglandin E (PGE), substance P (SP), bradykinin (BK), joint range of motion and quality of life were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: After 4 weeks of intervention, the Rasmussen score for knee function in the experimental group (24.15±1.36) scores was higher than that in the control group (21.25±2.20) scores (P<0.001). The VAS in the experimental group (2.04±0.51) scores was lower than that in the control group (2.78±0.60) after 4 weeks of intervention (P<0.05). Serum PGE (2.25±0.37) mg·L-1, SP (4.43±1.05) ng·ml-1, BK (2.67±0.68) ng·ml-1 in the experimental group were lower than those in the control group (3.91±0.44) mg·L-1, (6.12±1.37) ng·ml-1, (4.55±1.03) ng·ml-1 after 4 weeks of intervention(P<0.05);in the experimental group, the active knee flexion angle of the knee joint was (108.63±9.76)°, the active knee extension angle (-2.46±0.70)°, passive knee flexion angle (116.83±6.57)°, passive knee extension angle (1.44±0.38)° were better than control group (100.24±8.15)°, (-3.51±0.86)°, (111.04±8.22)°, (0.78±0.24)° (P<0.05);the experimental group's psychological score (73.12±5.08), physiological score (72.26±5.89), social function score (72.57±4.23), overall health score (75.12±5.16) were higher than that of the control group (68.49±4.13), (68.13±5.27), (69.04±3.42), and(70.88±3.97) respectvely(P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Electroacupuncture combined with CPM training after knee fracture surgery can significantly improve knee function and range of motion, reduce pain levels, and also improve quality of life and reduce the incidence of adverse events.

ABSTRACT

Edible mushrooms have rich nutrition (e.g., proteins, dietary fibers, polysaccharides) and they can be potential sources of important ingredients in food processing. However, the cultivation of mushroom fruiting bodies needs a relatively long time, and they can be easily polluted during the growth process. At the same time, a lot of labor and larger planting areas are also required. As we all know, submerged fermentation is a good way to produce edible mushroom mycelia with less environmental pollution and small footprint, which are also rich in nutrition and bioactive components that are used as dietary supplements or health care products in the food industry. Therefore, it can be considered that the replacement of edible mushroom fruiting bodies with edible mushroom mycelia produced through submerged fermentation has great application potential in food production. At present, most of the research about edible mushroom mycelia focuses on the production of bioactive metabolites in fermentation liquid, but there are few reports that concentrate on their applications in food. This paper reviews the research progress of submerged culture of edible mushroom mycelia and their applications in food products.

ABSTRACT

Chemical soil fumigation (CSF) and reductive soil disinfestation (RSD) have been proven to be effective agricultural strategies to improve soil quality, restructure microbial communities, and promote plant growth in soil degradation remediation. However, it is still unclear how RSD and CSF ensure soil and plant health by altering fungal communities. Field experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of CSF with chloropicrin, and RSD with animal feces on soil properties, fungal communities and functional composition, and plant physiological characteristics were evaluated. Results showed that RSD and CSF treatment improved soil properties, restructured fungal community composition and structure, enhanced fungal interactions and functions, and facilitated plant growth. There was a significant increase in OM, AN, and AP contents in the soil with both CSF and RSD treatments compared to CK. Meanwhile, compared with CK and CSF, RSD treatment significantly increased biocontrol Chaetomium relative abundance while reducing pathogenic Neonectria relative abundance, indicating that RSD has strong inhibition potential. Furthermore, the microbial network of RSD treatment was more complex and interconnected, and the functions of plant pathogens, and animal pathogen were decreased. Importantly, RSD treatment significantly increased plant SOD, CAT, POD activity, SP, Ca, Zn content, and decreased MDA, ABA, Mg, K, and Fe content. In summary, RSD treatment is more effective than CSF treatment, by stimulating the proliferation of probiotic communities to further enhance soil health and plant disease resistance.

ABSTRACT

Background: The integration of acupuncture with intramuscular injection of diclofenac sodium can expedite the onset of analgesia in treating acute renal colic caused by urolithiasis. However, it remains unclear whether acupuncture can accelerate pain relief constantly until complete remission. This study aimed to explore the extent to which acupuncture can expedite the onset time of response or complete pain relief in treating acute renal colic, and the predictive value of patient characteristics for treatment efficacy. Methods: This secondary analysis utilized data from a prior randomized controlled trial. Eighty patients with acute renal colic were randomly assigned 1:1 to the acupuncture group or the sham acupuncture group. After intramuscular injection of diclofenac sodium, acupuncture or sham acupuncture was delivered to patients. The outcomes included time to response (at least a 50 % reduction in pain) and complete pain relief. Between-group comparison under the 2 events was estimated by Kaplan-Meier methodology. Subgroup analysis was performed utilizing the Cox proportional hazards model. Results: The median response time and complete pain relief time in the acupuncture group were lower than those in the sham acupuncture group (5 vs 30 min, Log Rank P < 0.001; 20 min vs not observed, Log Rank P < 0.001, respectively). Hazard Ratios (HRs) for response across all subgroups favored the acupuncture group. All HRs for complete pain relief favored acupuncture, expect large stone and moderate pain at baseline. No interaction was found in either event. Conclusion: Acupuncture can accelerate the response time and complete pain relief time for patients with acute renal colic, with the efficacy universally. ABSTRACT

Allium crop breeding remains severely hindered due to the lack of high-quality reference genomes. Here we report high-quality chromosome-level genome assemblies for three key Allium crops (Welsh onion, garlic and onion), which are 11.17 Gb, 15.52 Gb and 15.78 Gb in size with the highest recorded contig N50 of 507.27 Mb, 109.82 Mb and 81.66 Mb, respectively. Beyond revealing the genome evolutionary process of Allium species, our pathogen infection experiments and comparative metabolomic and genomic analyses showed that genes encoding enzymes involved in the metabolic pathway of Allium-specific flavor compounds may have evolved from an ancient uncharacterized plant defense system widely existing in many plant lineages but extensively boosted in alliums. Using in situ hybridization and spatial RNA sequencing, we obtained an overview of cell-type categorization and gene expression changes associated with spongy mesophyll cell expansion during onion bulb formation, thus indicating the functional roles of bulb formation genes.

ABSTRACT

Currently, the gut-organ axis has become a hot research topic. As increasing attention has been paid to the role of gut microbiota in the health of organs, the complex and integrated dialogue mechanism between the gastrointestinal tract and the associated microbiota has been demonstrated in more and more studies. Skin as the largest organ in the human body serves as the primary barrier protecting the human body from damage. The proposal of the gut-skin axis has established a bidirectional link between the gut and the skin. The disturbance of gut microbiota can lead to the occurrence of skin diseases, the mechanism of which is complex and may involve multiple pathways in immunity, metabolism, and internal secretion. According to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM), the connection between the intestine and the skin can be established through the lung, and the interior disorders will definitely cause symptoms on the exterior. This paper reviews the research progress in the gut-skin axis and its correlation with TCM theory and provides ideas and a basis for cli-nical treatment and drug development of skin and intestinal diseases.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Aromatase inhibitors (AIs) are recommended as the preferred therapy for postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive (HR+) breast cancer. As a result, aromatase inhibitor-associated musculoskeletal symptom (AIMSS) have become a major problem leading to therapy discontinuation and decreased quality of life in patients receiving adjuvant AIs treatment. Multiple therapies have been attempted, but have yielded limited clinical results. This study will be performed to determine whether acupoint thread embedding (ATE) combined with Wenshen Bugu Decoction can effectively treat AIMSS, so as to improve the AIs medication compliance of postmenopausal breast cancer patients. METHODS: This study will utilize a randomized, 2 parallel groups controlled trial design. A total of 128 eligible postmenopausal breast cancer women with AIMSS will be randomized to receive a 12-week treatment with Wenshen Bugu Decoction alone (control group) or in combination with ATE (treatment group) in a 1:1 ratio. The primary outcome will be the 12 week Brief Pain Inventory Worst Pain (BPI-WP) score. The secondary outcome measures will include response rate, Brief Pain Inventory-Short Form (BFI-SF), Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Endocrine Symptom (FACT-ES), Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Breast (FACT-B), bone marrow density (BMD), blood markers of bone metabolite, Morisky medication adherence scale-8 (MMAS-8), credibility and expectancy, and survival outcomes. DISCUSSION: This trial may provide clinical evidence that ATE combined with Wenshen Bugu Decoction can be beneficial for treating AIMSS among postmenopausal breast cancer survivors. Our findings will be helpful to enhance the quality of life and reduce the occurrence of AIs withdrawal.

ABSTRACT

Photothermal therapy (PTT) has received constant attention as a promising cancer treatment. However, PTT-induced inflammation can limit its effectiveness. To address this shortcoming, we developed second near-infrared (NIR-II) light-activated nanotheranostics (CPNPBs), which include a thermosensitive nitric oxide (NO) donor (BNN6) to enhance PTT. Under a 1064 nm laser irradiation, the conjugated polymer in CPNPBs serves as a photothermal agent for photothermal conversion, and the generated heat triggers the decomposition of BNN6 to release NO. The combination of hyperthermia and NO generation under single NIR-II laser irradiation allows enhanced thermal ablation of tumors. Consequently, CPNPBs can be exploited as potential candidates for NO-enhanced PTT, holding great promise for their clinical translational development.

ABSTRACT

Continuous cropping of ginseng leads to serious declines in yield and quality because of self-toxicity of allelochemicals and other factors in soil. However, because of the long growth cycle and low survival rate of ginseng, rapid screening of autotoxic activity is difficult. Therefore, it is important to analyze the allelochemicals and identify a model plant with autotoxic responses similar to those of ginseng. In this study, UPLC-Orbitrap-HRMS targeted metabolomics and verification of autotoxic activity were used to analyze a problem soil from continuously cropped ginseng. Allelochemical markers were screened by OPLS-DA. Seeds and seedlings of maize, Chinese cabbage, cucumber, green beans, wheat, sunflower, and oats were selected to identify potential model plants. Model plants with autotoxic responses similar to those of ginseng were evaluated by comparing morphological, physiological, and biochemical characteristics. The n-butanol extract of the continuously cropped problem soil had the most significant autotoxic activity. Twenty-three ginsenosides and the contributions to autotoxic effects were screened and evaluated. Of potential model plants, seeds and seedlings of cucumber showed similar growth inhibition to that of ginseng under the action of allelochemicals. Thus, metabolomics can be used to screen allelochemicals in soil and predict the autotoxic effects, and the cucumber plant model can be used to rapidly screen allelopathic activity of ginseng. The study will provide reference for methodology in allelopathy research on ginseng.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Acupuncture has been widely used in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis (KOA), but the selection of acupoints is indeterminate and lacks biological basis. The skin temperature of acupoints can reflect the state of local tissue and may be a potential factor for guiding acupoint selection. This study aims to compare the skin temperature of acupoints between KOA patients and the healthy population. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: This is a protocol for a cross-sectional case-control study with 170 KOA patients and 170 age- and gender-matched healthy individuals. Diagnosed patients aged 45 to 70 will be recruited in the KOA group. Participants in the healthy group will be matched with the KOA group based on mean age and gender distribution. Skin temperature of 11 acupoints (ST35, EX-LE5, GB33, GB34, EX-LE2, ST34, ST36, GB39, BL40, SP9, SP10) will be extracted from infrared thermography (IRT) images of the lower limbs. Other measurements will include demographic data (gender, age, ethnicity, education, height, weight, BMI) and disease-related data (numerical rating scale, pain sites, duration of pain, pain descriptors, pain activities). DISCUSSION: The results of this study will provide biological evidence for acupoint selection. This study is a precondition for follow-up studies, in which the value of optimized acupoint selection will be verified. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ChiCTR2200058867.

Objective: Anemia has been reported to adversely influence sleep in infants. However, the association between anemia in pregnancy and infant sleep remains unclear. We aimed to examine the association between maternal anemia in pregnancy and sleep parameters of 6-month-old infants. Methods: We enrolled 2,410 mother-infant pairs between 2018 and 2021 in Hefei. Data on maternal hemoglobin concentration were collected at 24-28 gestational weeks from the electronic medical records of the hospitals. Nocturnal and daytime sleep duration, number of night awakenings, nocturnal wakefulness, and sleep latency of infants aged 6 months were measured using the Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire with five items. A restricted cubic spline model was used to examine the relationship between maternal hemoglobin concentration and infant nocturnal sleep duration after adjusting for potential confounders. Results: In our study, 807 (33.5%) mothers had anemia during pregnancy. Compared to infants born to mothers without anemia, infants born to mothers with anemia in pregnancy had shorter nocturnal sleep duration [mean (SD), 560.29 (79.57) mins vs. 574.27 (75.36) mins] at the age of 6 months. Subgroup analysis showed consistent significant differences in nocturnal sleep duration between infant born to anemic and non-anemic mothers, except in case of stratification by preterm birth [mean difference (mins), 2.03 (95% CI, -20.01, -24.07)] and pre-pregnancy obesity [mean difference (mins), -0.85 (95% CI, -16.86, -15.16)]. A J-shaped nonlinear correlation curve was observed between maternal hemoglobin concentration and infant nocturnal sleep duration. Compared with mothers without daily iron supplementation, mothers who had daily iron supplementation had higher hemoglobin concentrations [mean (SD), 112.39 (11.33) g/L vs. 110.66 (10.65) g/L] at delivery and their infants had longer nocturnal sleep duration [mean (SD), 565.99 (82.46) mins vs. 553.66 (76.03) mins]. Conclusion: Anemia in pregnancy may have an adverse influence on the sleep of 6-mon-old infants, and the relationship between maternal hemoglobin concentration and nocturnal sleep duration is nonlinear.

ABSTRACT

Insufficienct T lymphocyte infiltration and unresponsiveness to immune checkpoint blockade therapy are still major difficulties for the clinical treatment of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Although econazole has shown promise in inhibiting PDAC growth, its poor bioavailability and water solubility limit its potential as a clinical therapy for PDAC. Furthermore, the synergistic role of econazole and biliverdin in immune checkpoint blockade therapy in PDAC remains elusive and challenging. Herein, a chemo-phototherapy nanoplatform is designed by which econazole and biliverdin can be co-assembled (defined as FBE NPs), which significantly improve the poor water solubility of econazole and enhance the efficacy of PD-L1 checkpoint blockade therapy against PDAC. Mechanistically, econazole and biliverdin are directly released into the acidic cancer microenvironment, to activate immunogenic cell death via biliverdin-induced PTT/PDT and boost the immunotherapeutic response of PD-L1 blockade. In addition, econazole simultaneously enhances PD-L1 expression to sensitize anti-PD-L1 therapy, leading to suppression of distant tumors, long-term immune memory effects, improved dendritic cell maturation, and tumor infiltration of CD8+ T lymphocytes. The combined FBE NPs and α-PDL1 show synergistic antitumor efficacy. Collectively, FBE NPs show excellent biosafety and antitumor efficacy by combining chemo-phototherapy with PD-L1 blockade, which has promising potential in a precision medicine approach as a PDAC treatment strategy.

ABSTRACT: Chronic pain has been one of the leading causes of disability. Acupuncture is globally used in chronic pain management. However, the efficacy of acupuncture treatment varies across patients. Identifying individual factors and developing approaches that predict medical benefits may promise important scientific and clinical applications. Here, we investigated the psychological and neurological factors collected before treatment that would determine acupuncture efficacy in knee osteoarthritis. In this neuroimaging-based randomized controlled trial, 52 patients completed a baseline assessment, 4-week acupuncture or sham-acupuncture treatment, and an assessment after treatment. The patients, magnetic resonance imaging operators, and outcome evaluators were blinded to treatment group assignment. First, we found that patients receiving acupuncture treatment showed larger pain intensity improvements compared with patients in the sham-acupuncture arm. Second, positive expectation, extraversion, and emotional attention were correlated with the magnitude of clinical improvements in the acupuncture group. Third, the identified neurological metrics encompassed striatal volumes, posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) cortical thickness, PCC/precuneus fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF), striatal fALFF, and graph-based small-worldness of the default mode network and striatum. Specifically, functional metrics predisposing patients to acupuncture improvement changed as a consequence of acupuncture treatment, whereas structural metrics remained stable. Furthermore, support vector machine models applied to the questionnaire and brain features could jointly predict acupuncture improvement with an accuracy of 81.48%. Besides, the correlations and models were not significant in the sham-acupuncture group. These results demonstrate the specific psychological, brain functional, and structural predictors of acupuncture improvement and may offer opportunities to aid clinical practices.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a common malignancy with the second highest mortality and the third highest morbidity worldwide. However, the overall survival of patients is unsatisfactory, thus requiring more effective clinical strategies. Celastrol (CLT), a natural bioactive compound, has been reported to induce reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated apoptosis to exhibit significant antitumor effects against CRC. However, the poor water solubility, low targeting ability, and bioavailability of CLT have limited its application, and CLT-induced protective autophagy weakens its therapeutic efficiency. RESULTS: We designed a targeted chemo-phototherapy nanoplatform (HCR NPs) to improve the application of CLT. The codelivery of IR820 and CLT in HCR NPs solved the water-soluble problem of CLT and enhanced apoptosis via IR820-mediated hyperthermia. In addition, hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) conjugated to hyaluronic acid (HA) not only increased the active targeting of HCR NPs but also inhibited CLT-induced protective autophagy to exacerbate apoptosis, thus achieving an amplified antitumor effect. Importantly, the HCR NPs exhibited an excellent therapeutic effect on CRC both in vitro and in vivo. CONCLUSION: The HCR NPs presented in this study may not merely provide a new reference for the clinical application of CLT but also result in an attractive strategy for CRC treatment.

To explore the effect of music therapy on children with leukemia who have peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC).In this study, we divided 107 patients undergoing PICC into music group (47 cases) and control group (60 cases). The music group received music therapy during PICC, while the control group was given no complementary treatment. The total length of catheterization, the use of sedatives and the changes of pain level and emotion level before and after PICC placement were compared between two groups.Compared with the control group, the total PICC placement time of the music group was significantly shorter (35(30-40) vs. 60(60-60); Z = -8.307; p < 0.001), and the use of sedative medications was also significantly reduced (4.35% (n = 2) vs. 91.84% (n = 45); p < 0.001). Moreover, the pain of catheterization was significantly alleviated. The median difference of pain scores of the music group was significantly less (2(1-3) vs. 5(5-5); p < 0.001). The mood of patients was also improved. The median difference of emotional scores of the music group was significantly more (5(4.75-6) vs. 3(3-3); p < 0.001) than the control group.Music therapy is effective to use in PICC. It can shorten the treatment time, reduce the use of sedative medications, and improve the children's emotion and pain response significantly, which is worth clinical application.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women, affecting more than 2 million women worldwide annually. However, effective treatments for breast cancer are limited. Nobiletin is a flavonoid present in the dried mature pericarp of mandarin orange (Citrus reticulata Blanco), which is used to prepare Citri Renetulatae Pericarpium and can inhibit tumour growth and progression according to modern pharmacological studies. However, whether nobiletin exhibits an antimetastatic role in breast cancer and its potential mechanism need to be further investigated. PURPOSE: This study aims to evaluate the inhibitory effect of nobiletin on breast cancer and to elucidate potential mechanisms against invasion and migration. METHODS: Cell viability was determined by cell counting kit-8 and colony formation assays. Wound healing and Boyden chamber assays detected cancer cell migration and invasion capabilities. Immunoblotting and qPCR were applied to determine the protein and mRNA expression levels of extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERK) and the c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) signalling pathways. Molecular docking was used to assess the degree of nobiletin binding to phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K). Xenografts and liver metastases were constructed in BALB/c nude mice to evaluate the anticancer effect of nobiletin in vivo. H&E staining and immunohistochemistry were used to detect proliferation and the expression of related proteins. RESULTS: Nobiletin induced cell death in a concentration- and time-dependent manner and possessed anti-invasion and anti-migration effects on MCF-7 and T47D cells by suppressing the interleukin-6-induced ERK and JNK signalling pathways. In addition, nobiletin docked with the binding site of PI3K, and the binding score was -8.0 kcal/mol. Furthermore, the inhibition of breast cancer growth and metastasis by nobiletin was demonstrated by constructing xenografts and liver metastases in vivo. CONCLUSION: Nobiletin inhibited liver metastasis of breast cancer by downregulating the ERK-STAT and JNK-c-JUN pathways, and its safety and efficacy were verified, indicating the potential of nobiletin as an anticancer agent.

ABSTRACT

Importance: Despite the adoption of the optimized Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocol, postoperative ileus (POI) severely impairs recovery after colorectal resection and increases the burden on the health care system. Objective: To assess the efficacy of electroacupuncture (EA) in reducing the duration of POI with the ERAS protocol. Design, Setting, and Participants: This multicenter, randomized, sham-controlled trial was conducted in China from October 12, 2020, through October 17, 2021. There was a 1:1 allocation using the dynamic block random method, and analyses were by intention to treat. Patients 18 years or older undergoing laparoscopic resection of colorectal cancer for the first time were randomly assigned to treatment group by a central system. Interventions: Patients were randomly assigned to 4 sessions of EA or sham electroacupuncture (SA) after surgery. All patients were treated within the ERAS protocol. Main Outcomes and Measures: The primary outcome was the time to first defecation. Secondary outcomes included other patient-reported outcome measures, length of postoperative hospital stay, readmission rate within 30 days, and incidence of postoperative complications and adverse events. Results: A total of 249 patients were randomly assigned to treatment groups. After the exclusion of 1 patient because of a diagnosis of intestinal tuberculosis, 248 patients (mean [SD] age, 60.2 [11.4] years; 153 men [61.7%]) were included in the analyses. The median (IQR) time to first defecation was 76.4 (67.6-96.8) hours in the EA group and 90.0 (73.6-100.3) hours in the SA group (mean difference, -8.76; 95% CI, -15.80 to -1.73; P = .003). In the EA group compared with the SA group, the time to first flatus (median [IQR], 44.3 [37.0-58.2] hours vs 58.9 [48.2-67.4] hours; P < .001) and the tolerability of semiliquid diet (median [IQR], 105.8 [87.0-120.3] hours vs 116.5 [92.0-137.0] hours; P = .01) and solid food (median [IQR], 181.8 [149.5-211.4] hours vs 190.3 [165.0-228.5] hours; P = .01) were significantly decreased. Prolonged POI occurred in 13 of 125 patients (10%) in the EA group vs 25 of 123 patients (20%) in the SA group (risk ratio [RR], 0.51; 95% CI, 0.27-0.95; P = .03). Other secondary outcomes were not different between groups. There were no severe adverse events. Conclusions and Relevance: Results of this randomized clinical trial demonstrated that in patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer with the ERAS protocol, EA shortened the duration of POI and decreased the risk for prolonged POI compared with SA. EA may be considered as an adjunct to the ERAS protocol to promote gastrointestinal function recovery and prevent prolonged POI after surgery. Objective: Preterm birth is one of the most important health problems in the world. Feeding intolerance is one of the most common and serious complications of premature infant. The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of Chinese pediatric Tuina on the prevention of feeding intolerance in favour of weight gain in premature infants. Methods: A prospective randomized controlled study was conducted in the Department of Neonatology in our hospital. Premature infants were recruited and randomly assigned to an intervention group or a control group. Premature infants in the intervention group received a Chinese pediatric Tuina intervention by professional chiropractors, while premature infants in the control group received standard care. The incidence of feeding intolerance and weight gain situation were compared between the two groups. Result: After 1 week of intervention, the body weight (2.5±0.5 vs 2.0±0.4, p=0.038), head circumference (32.8±1.7 vs 29.9±1.4, p=0.041), albumin (34.6±5.8 vs 28.4±6.1, p-0.026) and prealbumin (155.8±35.2 vs 113.6±36.8, p=0.021) of preterm infants in the intervention group were significantly better than those in the control group. The incidence of feeding intolerance (7 vs 15, p=0.032) in the intervention group was significantly lower than that in the control group. Although there were no statistically significant differences (P>0.05), the incidences of gastrointestinal bleeding, necrotizing enterocolitis, and liver insufficiency were lower in the intervention group than in the control group. Conclusion: Chinese pediatric Tuina can effectively prevent the occurrence of feeding intolerance in premature infants and be conducive to the weight gain and improving nutritional status of premature infants.

ABSTRACT

Ginseng root rot caused by Fusarium oxysporum is serious disease that impacts ginseng production. In the present study, 145 strains of bacteria were isolated from the rhizosphere soil of healthy ginseng plants. Three strains with inhibitory activity against Fusarium oxysporum (accession number AF077393) were identified using the dual culture tests and designated as YN-42(L), YN-43(L), and YN-59(L). Morphological, physiological, biochemical, 16S rRNA gene sequencing and phylogenetic analyses were used to identify the strains as Bacillus subtilis [YN-42(L)] (accession number ON545980), Delftia acidovorans [YN-43(L)] (accession number ON545981), and Bacillus polymyxae [YN-59(L)] (accession number ON545982). All three isolates effectively inhibited the growth of Fusarium oxysporum in vitro and the antagonistic mechanism used by the three strains involved the secretion of multiple bioactive metabolites responsible for the hydrolysis of the fungal cell wall. All three biocontrol bacteria produce indoleacetic acid, which has a beneficial effect on plant growth. From our findings, all three antagonistic strains can be excellent candidates for ginseng root rot caused by the pathogenic fungus Fusarium oxysporum. These bacteria have laid the foundation for the biological control of ginseng root rot and for further research on the field control of ginseng pathogens.
