ABSTRACT

Background: Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) have been suggested to lead to bone resorption, while the effects of PPIs on the bone mineral metabolism in children has received only limited attention in literature to date. The present study investigates whether lansoprazole alters bone turnover markers in adolescents with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Patients and methods: Included in the study were adolescents aged 16-18 with GERD and a healthy volunteers group. The GERD patient group was treated with lansoprazole 30 mg once daily for eight weeks. The serum calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), parathormone (PTH), 25 (OH) vitamin D, osteocalcin and urinary calcium, creatinine, deoxypyridinoline (DPD), collagen type-1 crosslinked C-telopeptide (CTX) and collagen type-1 crosslinked N-telopeptide (NTX) of both groups were studied before and after the end of the treatment. Results: A comparison of the 30 patients with GERD and the 30 volunteers revealed no significant difference in the serum calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, ALP, urinary calcium/creatinine ratio, 25 (OH) vitamin D and PTH levels measured before and after the lansoprazole treatment, while the osteocalcin, DPD, CTX and NTX values were found to be higher after treatment when compared to those at pre- treatment. Conclusions: The results of this study reveal that eight weeks of treatment with 30 mg lansoprazole daily increased the bone turnover markers of CTX, NTX, DPD and osteocalcin in adolescents aged 16-18.

ABSTRACT

Eight taxa of the Hypericum spp. growing in Central Italy (Appennino Umbro-Marchigiano) were analyzed by HPLC-DAD for constituents quantitation, for antioxidant and free radical scavenging activities. H. perforatum subsp. veronense was the richest in phenolic compounds and hyperforin was detected for the first time in H. hircinum subsp. majus. Significant values of antioxidant activity were found in the investigated Hypericum taxa.

ABSTRACT

Effects of an ethanolic extract prepared from G. lutea ssp. symphyandra roots on the bile production and liver in rats were investigated. Bile flows of rats which were treated by a single i.p. dose of CCl(4) 24 h prior to experiments were measured after the cannulation of bile duct under urethane anaesthesia. After an equilibration period of 1 h, the lyophilized extract were administered intraduodenally (500 mg/kg i.p.), while control animals received physiological saline only. To monitor the effect of multiple dose therapy, rats received the same dose of G. lutea ssp. symphyandra extract for 3 days (2 days prior to CCl(4) administration) and their bile flows were measured after the cannulation. In all groups, bile samples were collected for 3 h with 15 min intervals. After the completion of bile flow experiment, rat livers were removed and put in neutral formaldehyde solution (10%) for the histological examination. According to results obtained, multiple dose treatment of rats with the plant extract normalized the decreased bile flow due CCl(4), whereas single dose therapy was ineffective on the impaired bile flow. These data indicate that the extract prepared from Gentiana lutea ssp. symphyandra roots has a hepatoprotective activity.

ABSTRACT

In 9 subjects with normal hearing, monaural offset (MO) responses in the long-latency range were recorded with and without an ongoing sound (click train at a rate of 250/s) at the opposite ear. In the latter case MOs were perceived simply as termination of a sound. In the former case, however, the abrupt transition from binaural to monaural (BM) stimulation was perceived as a shift of the fused image from the center to either side. Therefore, the fairly large difference potential obtained by subtracting the MO response from the BM response was evaluated as the cortical response to stimulation of the sound lateralization mechanism based on interaural intensity differences. These center-to-side responses, which could be characterized by an N1-P2 wave sequence at latencies of 120 and 220 ms, respectively, were compared with the auditory onset responses also recorded from the same subjects by means of a sequential stimulation paradigm. The scalp topography of the N1 components in all these responses recorded simultaneously from frontocentral, parietocentral and two superior temporal electrodes with a neck reference is discussed.
