ABSTRACT

Plants that produce secondary metabolites with allelopathic activity or phytotoxicity can be biotechnologically important, serving as sources of allelochemicals, and thus contributing to the agroindustrial sector. Vismia japurensis (Hypericaceae) is an Amazonian species that grows in clumps called vismiais, from which most other plants are absent. Accordingly, the objective of this study was to identify possible phytotoxicity effects of hexane and methanol extracts of Vismia japurensis leaves and branches in vivo and from seedlings grown in vitro on Lactuca sativa. In addition, fresh and dry leaves were assayed by the sandwich method in order to determine their ability to release allelochemicals. The hexanic extract from in vitro seedlings reduced germination by 10%, while the methanol extract produced a 16% reduction in germination speed. Root growth of Lactuca sativa was inhibited by 64.7% when subjected to hexane leaf extract, by 39.3% under the influence of hexane branch extract, and by 96.09% for in vitro seedling hexanic extract. When analysed by thin layer chromatography and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance, extracts showed evidence of terpenes, anthraquinones and flavonoids, with greater intensity of signals in the aromatic region of in vitro seedling hexanic extract. Clearly, Vismia japurensis has a high biotechnological potential in terms of the production of substances of low polarity with capacity to interfere in plant development.

Quando analisados por cromatografia em camada delgada e ressonância magnética nuclear de 1H, os extratos mostraram evidências de terpenos, antraquinonas e flavonoides, com maior intensidade de sinais na região aromática do extrato hexânico das plântulas in vitro. Assim, Vismia japurensis possui elevado potencial biotecnológico em termos de produção de substâncias de baixa polaridade com capacidade de interferência no desenvolvimento de plantas.

Biofilm formation is widely reported in the literature as a problem in the healthcare, environmental, and industrial sectors. However, the role of biofilms in sliding contacts remains unclear. Friction during sliding was analyzed for titanium covered with mixed biofilms consisting of Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans. The morphology of biofilms on titanium surfaces was evaluated before, during, and after sliding tests. Very low friction was recorded on titanium immersed in artificial saliva and sliding against alumina in the presence of biofilms. The complex structure of biofilms, which consist of microbial cells and their hydrated exopolymeric matrix, acts like a lubricant. A low friction in sliding contacts may have major significance in the medical field. The composition and structure of biofilms are shown to be key factors for an understanding of friction behavior of dental implant connections and prosthetic joints. For instance, a loss of mechanical integrity of dental implant internal connections may occur as a consequence of the decrease in friction caused by biofilm formation. Consequently, the study of the exopolymeric matrix can be important for the development of high-performance novel joint-based systems for medical and other engineering applications.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the homeopathic complex Homeopatila RS (REAL Homeopathy, Brazil), in the performance, sexual proportion and gills and liver histology of the Nile tilapia fish (Oreochromis niloticus L.). 4,800 post-larvae were treated for 45 days, in 12 tanks (500 L), in a closed environment, with density of 400 larvae per tank. Three treatments were given: alcohol 30%, negative control (C); hormonal, positive control, 17 alpha-methyltestosterone (H); homeopathic, Homeopatila RS, in ethanol (HH), with four replications. Mean values for length, weight, liver somatic index, condition factor, survival rate, average values of histological alterations and sexual proportion were determined. Analysis revealed significant differences (p<0.05) in growth, survival rate, liver somatic index and average values of hepatic histological alterations between treatments. It was concluded that the addition of Homeopatila RS to the diet of Nile tilapias, during the phase of gonadal differentiation, did not induce any alteration in the sexual proportion. Homeopathically treated fish were significantly smaller, but had significantly greater survival than the other two groups, there was no significant difference in final total biomass. The homeopathically treated fish had a lower liver/somatic index with less hepatic lipid inclusions than the other groups.

ABSTRACT

The hypothesis was that the intramuscular injection (i.m.) of beta-carotene associated to tocopherol improves cow (n=86) and heifer (n=91) embryo production and quality. Time of estrus was synchronized in animals with an ear implant with 3 mg of norgestomet associated with an i.m. injection of 6 mg of norgestomet and 10mg of estradiol valerate (CRESTAR, Intervert International B.V., Boxmeer, Holland) and superovulated by 8 i.m. FSH/LHp injections (400 IU-heifers and 500 IU-cows) in decreasing concentrations at 12h intervals. Animals were inseminated 12 and 24h after observed onset of estrus and embryos recovered 7 days later. Animals were randomly allocated to one of three treatments: (1) vegetable oil vehicle (control), (2) 800 mg of beta-carotene and 500 mg of tocopherol (T800) and (3) 1200 mg of beta-carotene and 750 mg of tocopherol (T1200). Supplemental injections were given at the day norgestomet implants were inserted and at first superovulatory injection. An index (Embryo Quality Index or EQI) was proposed to more precisely evaluate embryo quality (excellent*1 + good*2 + regular*3 + poor*4 + degenerate*5 + unfertilized ova*5)/total. There was an interaction between physiological stage (heifer or cow) and treatment on EQI (P=0.01) and on the proportion of viable embryos (P=0.03), where both variables were improved in T1200 cows, but not in heifers. The average EQI for heifers and cows in control, T800 and T1200 were 2.6+/-0.3 and 3.6+/-0.3; 2.5+/-0.3 and 3.6+/-0.3; 2.9+/-0.3 and 2.7+/-0.3, respectively. The average total number of viable embryos was greater (P=0.01) in supplemented cows (3.5+/-1.1; 5.4+/-1.4 and 7.5+/-1.2 in control, T800 and T1200, respectively), but less (P=0.01) in heifers (7.5+/-1.2; 5.6+/-1.2 and 4.0+/-1.1 in control, T800 and T1200, respectively). Supplementation injections of beta-carotene associated to tocopherol improved embryo quality in superovulated Holstein cows, in the present experimental conditions and may be advantageous in similar embryo production systems. However, at dosages applied in the present experiment, this treatment should not be recommended for nulliparous heifers.

ABSTRACT

Three groups of 6 goats each were fed a ration containing 30, 60, or 90%, on a dry matter base, of Prosopis juliflora pods. A control group of 4 goats ingested only the basic ration. Two hundred and ten days after the start of the experiment 3 goats that ingested 60% pods in and 4 that ingested 90% had mandibular tremors, mainly during chewing. All animals were killed after 270 d of ingestion. No gross lesions were observed. Histologic lesions were characterized by fine vacuolation of the pericaryon of neurons from the trigeminal nuclei. Occasionally neurons of the oculomotor nuclei were also affected. Wallerian degeneration was occasionally observed in the mandibular and trigeminal nerves. Denervation atrophy of the masseter, temporal, hypoglossus, genioglossus, styloglossus, medial pterygoid and lateral pterygoid muscles was seen. The clinical signs from feeding the P juliflora pods were caused by a selective toxicity to neurons of some cranial nerve nuclei.

ABSTRACT

Descrevem-se os achados anatomopatológicos de um caso de osteopatia hipertrófica pulmonar em um cäo adulto sem raça definida e sem histórico clínico. A necropsia, foi observado um nódulo cutâneo na cabeça. Havia outros nódulos nos pulmöes, nos rins e no coraçäo. Macroscopicamente, estes apresentavam coloraçäo esbranquiçada, consistência firme e diâmetro que variavam de pouco milímetros a 10 centímetros, como foi observado nos pulmöes. Todos os quatro membros apresentavam-se grossos e duros, com acentuada proliferaçäo periosteal simétrica. Histologicamente, na superfície externa da cortical havia trabéculas ósseas entremeadas por tecido medular e a proliferaçäo periosteal caracterizada por tecido ósseo imaturo. Foram observadas várias cavidades na cortical. Concluiu-se pelo diagnóstico de osteopatia hipertrófica, secundária à metástase pulmonar de fibrossarcoma cutânea

The efficacy and acceptability of two widely used oral contraceptive tablets, one containing 250 mg levonorgestrel and 50 micrograms ethinyl estradiol and the other containing 150 micrograms desogestrel and 30 micrograms ethinyl estradiol, administered by the vaginal route were compared in 1055 women studied over 12,630 woman-months of vaginal contraceptive pill use. This multicenter clinical trial was performed in nine countries of the developing world by the "South to South Cooperation in Reproductive Health," an organization founded by scientists from the Third World working in the area of reproductive health, and the study was developed and coordinated by one of these centers. The findings of this study confirm the efficacy of both these tablets when administered by the vaginal route. Involuntary pregnancy rates at 1 year of 2.78 for subjects in the levonorgestrel group and 4.54 for subjects the desogestrel group showed no statistically significant difference between the two groups. However, total discontinuation rates of 47.01 for subjects in the levonorgestrel group and 56.33 for subjects in the desogestrel group showed a statistically significant difference between the two groups, and discontinuation rates attributable to prolonged bleeding of 0.6 for subjects in the levonorgestrel group and 3.2 for subjects in the desogestrel group were also significantly higher in the group of subjects using the desogestrel vaginal contraceptive pill. Blood pressure remained at admission values throughout treatment. A statistically significant weight increase from admission values occurred in both groups of subjects.


PIP: Efficacy and acceptability of 2 combined oral contraceptive pills administered vaginally are summarized. This is the 1st collaborative trial published by the South to South Cooperation in Reproductive Health. 1055 women participated in 12,630 cycles, in 9 countries, from June 1988 to May 1991. The pills were commercially available tablets containing 50 mcg ethinyl estradiol and 250 mg levonorgestrel (Schering AG, Sao Paulo, Brazil), or 30 mcg ethinyl estradiol and 15 mcg desogestrel (Organon, Sao Paulo, Brazil). Subjects were aged 17-39 younger and of lower parity from Mexico and Dominican Republic and older from Egypt and China. All had at least 1 pregnancy. 675 participated for 6 months, 470 for 1 year, 364 for 18 months, and 210 for 2 years. The 1-year discontinuation rate averaged 47.01% for the levonorgestrel group and 56.33% for the desogestrel group (p = 0.0061); 2-year discontinuation rates were 48.01% and 69.36, respectively, explained in part by higher involuntary pregnancy rates and prolonged bleeding rates in the desogestrel group. The most common medical reasons for stopping contraception were unplanned pregnancy, vaginal or vulval irritation, nausea, vaginal discharge and headache. Vaginal irritation was reported by 1%, 9 in each group. There were 32 pregnancies, 14 in the levonorgestrel and 18 in the desogestrel group. 17 were in missed pill cycles and the rest were method failures, 6 in the levonorgestrel group and 9 in the desogestrel group. The Pearl index varied from 0 in Nigeria to 12.24 in Mexico, and was 2.45 for levonorgestrel vs. 3.74 for desogestrel. There was a wide variation in discontinuation rates by center: Brazil and China had few, while many women from Dominican Republic, Mexico and Zambia left the study. Bleeding problems were common complaints, more so in the desogestrel group. There were 363 women with intermenstrual bleeding (only once in 80%), 148 with spotting (only twice in 65%). Bleeding duration was significantly less in pill cycles than baseline, pressure. Women gained an average of 1 kg over 2 years, more in the desogestrel group. The pregnancy rate of 2.78 is within the range reported for levonorgestrel rings.
