ABSTRACT

Tea is the most popular drink worldwide, and China is the largest producer of tea. Therefore, tea is an important commercial crop in China, playing a significant role in domestic and foreign markets. It is necessary to make accurate and timely maps of the distribution of tea plantation areas for plantation management and decision making. In the present study, we propose a novel mapping method to map tea plantation. The town of Menghai in the Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China, was chosen as the study area, andgg GF-1 remotely sensed data from 2014-2017 were chosen as the data source. Image texture, spectral and geometrical features were integrated, while feature space was built by SEparability and THresholds algorithms (SEaTH) with decorrelation. Object-Oriented Image Analysis (OOIA) with a Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm was utilized to map tea plantation areas. The overall accuracy and Kappa coefficient ofh the proposed method were 93.14% and 0.81, respectively, 3.61% and 0.05, 6.99% and 0.14, 6.44% and 0.16 better than the results of CART method, Maximum likelihood method and CNN based method. The tea plantation area increased by 4,095.36 acre from 2014 to 2017, while the fastest-growing period is 2015 to 2016.

ABSTRACT

Cadmium (Cd) is a ubiquitous environmental pollutant of increasing worldwide concern to both humans and animals. Selenium yeast (Se-Y) is an organic selenium source that has been shown an advantage in antagonizing Cd-induced liver necroptosis in chicken. Herein, we described the discovery path of Se-Y antagonism in Cd-induced renal necroptosis in chicken through targeting miR-26a-5p/PTEN/PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. We set up four groups of chickens at random: control group (0.5 mg/kg Na2SeO3), Se-Y group (0.5 mg/kg Se-Y), Se-Y+Cd group (0.5 mg/kg Se-Y and 150 mg/kg CdCl2) and Cd group (150 mg/kg CdCl2 and 0.5 mg/kg Na2SeO3). Interestingly, we found Se-Y, but not Na2SeO3, significantly blocked Cd accumulation in the kidney and alleviated Cd-induced necroptosis through inhibiting the expression of RIP1, RIP3 and MLKL. Se-Y, activated miR-26a-5p expression, thereby down-regulated the expression of PTEN, resulting in the up-regulation of PI3K/AKT signaling pathway and the inhibition of oxidative stress in both Se-Y and Cd treated chickens. Besides that, Se-Y could also specifically reduce the expression levels of heat shock protein 60 (HSP60), HSP70 and HSP90 in Se-Y and Cd co-treated chickens. Taken together, our results showed that Se-Y has an added value to antagonize Cd-induced necroptosis in chicken kidney by regulating the miR-26a-5p/PTEN/PI3K/AKT signaling pathway and HSPs, indicating that Se-Y could serve as an effective antagonist on Cd-induced renal necroptosis in chickens.

ABSTRACT

Lead (Pb) is a ubiquitous and toxic heavy metal and it can damage the immune system in humans and animals. Many researchers have reported that Selenium (Se) could possess various pharmacological effects in mammals. However, few studies have been carried out to investigate the protective role of Se in birds, especially in chickens. In this study, we investigated the protective effects of Se against Pb-induced inflammatory responses and the expression of heat shock proteins (HSPs) in peripheral blood neutrophils. One hundred eighty Hy-Line brown chickens were randomly divided into the control group (Con group), Se supplementation group (+Se group), Pb supplementation group (+Pb group), and the Se and Pb compound group (Se+Pb group). On the 90th day of the experiment, the peripheral blood was collected to extract neutrophils, and then, the levels of HSPs and cytokines were examined. The results showed that, after Pb treatment, the levels of IL-(1ß, 1R, 4, 8, 10, and 12ß), TGF-ß4, and HSP (27, 40, 60, 70, and 90) mRNA were significantly increased and levels of IL-2 and IFN-γ mRNA were decreased compared with those in the control group. Compared with the control group, the protein levels of HSP60 and HSP70 were also increased in the Pb treatment group. Co-administration of Se (1 mg/kg/day) and Pb resulted in a reversal of the Pb-induced cytokine changes in neutrophils accompanied by a significant decrease in HSPs. Our study demonstrated that Pb could decrease the immune function via changing the expression of cytokines and HSPs in chicken neutrophils, but Se could relieve the toxic effect induced by Pb.

ABSTRACT

An endophytic fungus, Mycosphaerella nawae ZJLQ129, was isolated from the leaves of the traditional Chinese medicine Smilax china. From the fermentation broth and mycelium, a dibenzofurane compound (-)mycousnine (1) was isolated. Chemical modification of it to the amide derivative (-)mycousnine enamine (2), which is new to science, was found to have high and selective immunosuppressive activity: similar to cyclosporin A, (-)mycousnine enamine (2) selectively inhibited T cell proliferation, suppressed the expression of the surface activation antigens CD25 and CD69 and the formation and expression of the cytokines interleukin-2 as well as interferon γ in activated T cells, but did not show any effect on the proliferation of B cells and cancer cells (PANC-1 and A549) and the activation of macrophages. Furthermore, the cytotoxicity of (-)mycousnine enamine was lower than that of cyclosporin A, and its therapeutic index (TC50/EC50) was 4,463.5, which is five-fold higher than that of cyclosporin A. We conclude that (-)mycousnine enamine (2), the semi-synthestic product prepared from the native product (-)mycousnine (1) of the endophyte M. nawae is a novel effective immunosuppressant showing low toxicity and high selectivity.

ABSTRACT

Nonpoint source pollution is one of the primary causes of eutrophication of water bodies. The concentrations and loads of dissolved pollutants have a direct bearing on the environmental quality of receiving water bodies. Based on the Johnes export coefficient model, a pollutant production coefficient was established by introducing the topographical index and measurements of annual rainfall. A pollutant interception coefficient was constructed by considering the width and slope of present vegetation. These two coefficients were then used as the weighting factors to modify the existing export coefficients of various land uses. A modified export coefficient model was created to estimate the dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus loads in different land uses in the Three Gorges Reservoir Region (TGRR) in 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, and 2010. The results show that the new land use export coefficient was established by the modification of the production pollution coefficient and interception pollution coefficient. This modification changed the single numerical structure of the original land use export coefficient and takes into consideration temporal and spatial differentiation features. The modified export coefficient retained the change structure of the original single land use export coefficient, and also demonstrated that the land use export coefficient was not only impacted by the change of land use itself, but was also influenced by other objective conditions, such as the characteristics of the underlying surface, amount of rainfall, and the overall presence of vegetation. In the five analyzed years, the simulation values of the dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus loads in paddy fields increased after applying the modification in calculation. The dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus loads in dry land comprised the largest proportions of the TGRR's totals. After modification, the dry land values showed an initial increase and then a decrease over time, but the increments were much smaller than those of the paddy field. The dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus loads in the woodland and meadow decreased after modification. The dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus loads in the building lot were the lowest but showed an increase with the progression of time. These results demonstrate that the modified export coefficient model significantly improves the accuracy of dissolved pollutant load simulation for different land uses in the TGRR, especially the accuracy of dissolved nitrogen load simulation.

ABSTRACT

Objectives. The present study was conducted to evaluate the activity of nanometer propolis flavone (NPF) on inhibiting porcine parvovirus (PPV) in vitro and in vivo. Methods. In vitro, the effect of NPF on cellular infectivity of PPV was carried out before and after adding drug and simultaneous adding and PPV after being mixed. In vivo, the anti-PPV effect of NPF in guinea pigs was performed. Results. The results showed that NPF could significantly inhibit PPV infecting porcine kidney- (PK-) 15 cells compared with propolis flavone (PF), and the activity of NPF was the best in preadding drug pattern. NPF at high and medium doses was able to observably restrain PPV copying in lung, gonad, blood, and spleen, decrease the impact of PPV on weight of guinea pigs, and improve hemagglutination inhibition (HI) of PPV in serum. In addition, it could also increase the contents of IL-2 and IL-6 in serum after PPV challenge. Conclusion. These results indicated that NPF could significantly improve the anti-PPV activity of PF, and its high concentration possessed the best efficacy. Therefore, NPF would be expected to be exploited into a new-style antiviral drug.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Currently, 595 nm pulsed dye laser (PDL) therapy is offered as one of the effective treatments of port wine stains (PWSs). However, the efficacy of PDL differs in different populations. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to investigate the efficacy, and related factors, of 595 nm PDL in the treatment of PWSs in Chinese patients with skin type III to IV. METHODS: A total of 848 cases that were treated with PDL were enrolled and analyzed in this study. An independent dermatologist evaluated these lesions according to the before and after photographs. RESULTS: The response rate (RR) of all the 848 PWS patients was 69.9%, within which the cure rate was 6.3%. The patients aged ≤1 year had the highest RR (93.9%), whereas those treated after age 50 reacted the worst (RR =25%). We analyzed the anatomical distribution of the lesion and found that the temporal region had the highest lesion clearance (RR =75.3%), while the extremities had the lowest clearance (RR =44.5%). Compared with the patients whose lesion size was larger than 80 cm(2), the patients with small lesion size, of 0-20 cm(2), had better clinical effect (RR =73.8% vs 53.2%). The reactions of the patients with hyperplastic lesion were worse than those with red patches (RR =36.4% vs 71.7%). As well, increasing treatment numbers could achieve higher clearance rates (P=0.005). CONCLUSION: The PDL had a relatively high RR but a low clearance rate in Chinese patients with PWS, although the earlier the intervention, the better was the efficacy. The response of PDL was, not only related to the anatomical area, but also, to the lesion size, type of lesion (ie, the presence of existing hyperplastic lesions), and the number of treatment, all of which are essential for the evaluation of therapeutic effect and acquisition of patients consent before treatment.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Extraskeletal Ewing sarcoma (EES)/primitive neuroectodermal tumours (PNET) are rare soft tissue sarcomas. Prognostic factors and optimal therapy are still unconfirmed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis on patients to explore the clinic characteristics and prognostic factors of this rare disease. A total of 37 patients older than 15 years referred to our institute from Jan., 2002 to Jan., 2012 were reviewed. The characteristics, treatment and outcome were collected and analyzed. RESULTS: The median age was 28 years (range 15-65); the median size of primary tumours was 8.2 cm (range 2-19). Sixteen patients (43%) had metastatic disease at the initial presentation. Wide surgical margins were achieved in 14 cases (38%). Anthracycline or platinum-based chemotherapy was performed on 29 patients (74%). Radiotherapy was delivered in 13 (35%). At a median follow-up visit of 24 months (range 2-81), the media event-free survival (EFS) and overall survival (OS) were 15.8 and 30.2 months, respectively. The 3-year EFS and OS rates were 24% and 43%, respectively. Metastases at presentation and wide surgical margins were significantly associated with OS and EFS. Tumour size was significantly associated with OS but not EFS. There were no significant differences between anthracycline and platinum based chemotherapy regarding EFS and OS. CONCLUSIONS: EES/PNET is a malignant tumour with high recurrence and frequent distant metastasis. Multimodality therapy featuring wide surgical margins, aggressive chemotherapy and adjuvant local radiotherapy is necessary for this rare disease. Platinum-based chemotherapy can be used as an adjuvant therapy.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To characterize and evaluate functional and anatomic changes of visual pathway lesions during hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) treatment with blood-oxygenation-level-dependent functional MRI (BOLD-fMRI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixteen patients with visual pathway lesions received HBO treatment. Both BOLD-fMRI and DTI were performed before and after the treatment, while 12 healthy subjects were also studied with 2 examinations as control. The t-tests were used for the comparison of number of activated voxels (AVs) and fractional anisotropy (FA) between the two groups, and within the patient group before and after HBO treatment. Visual acuity of the patient group before and after the treatment was compared using Wilcoxon signed-rank test. RESULTS: Before the treatment, both AVs (P < 0.01) and FA (P < 0.05) in the bilateral cortexes of occipital lobes were significantly less in the patient group than in the control group. After the treatment, both AVs (P < 0.05) and FA (P < 0.05) were significantly increased. Moreover, The FA of 6 patients with lesions in the optical nerve was greater than the FA of the other 10 patients with lesions in the optic radiation (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: BOLD-fMRI combined with DTI was useful for the characterization and evaluation of anatomic and functional changes of visual pathway lesions and their development during HBO treatment.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To study the effects of kaixinsan on behavior and expression of p-CREB in hippocampus of the chronic stress rats. METHOD: The male Wistar rats which gained the similar scores by Open-field test were selected, then the depression model rat was produced by separation and chronic unpredictable mild stress. Open-field test was performed to detect the behavior of rats and immunohistochemistry was used to observe the changes of p-CREB expression in hippocampus. RESULT: On the 22nd day, the body weight and sacchar-intake of the depression model rats were all lower than those of the normal rats and the body weight and sacchar-intake of the rats treated by drugs were higher compared with model rats (P < 0.01). The depressive behavior in kaixinsan 4 g x kg(-1) group was significantly improved compared with the model group, the crossing scores and rearing scores were all increased (P < 0.01) and the expression of p-CREB in CA1, CA3 and DG in hippocampus was higher than that in the model group (P < 0.05 and P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Kaixinsan might improve depressive behavior by increasing expression of p-CREB in CA1, CA3 and DG in hippocampus of the chronic stress rats.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical effect of Erigeron injection (El) on positive expression rate of CD62p in platelet and content of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in serum of patients with acute cerebral infarction (ACI). METHODS: Sixty-eight patients with ACI were randomly divided into the treated group (n = 35) and the control group (n = 33). Conventional treatment were given to both groups, and EI 40 ml/d were given additionally to the treated group, the treatment course for both groups was 15 days. The positive expression of platelet CD62p and the serum TNF-alpha and IL-6 in patients before and after treatment were determined with flow cytometric (FCM) and electrochemical-luminescence (ECL) techniques respectively. RESULTS: The total curative effect in the treated group were significantly higher than that in the control group (P < 0.05). Levels of platelet CD62p and serum TNF-alpha and IL-6 in ACI patients before and after treatment were significant higher than those in the healthy group (P < 0.05), all the three parameters were significantly decreased after treatment, and the lowering in the treated group was more significant than that in the control group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The effect of El on ACI patients may relate to its action in down-regulating the expression of platelet CD62p, alleviating the immune response and inflammatory injury of central nervous system induced by cytokines.
