ABSTRACT

The complexity and heterogeneity of individual tumors have hindered the efficacy of existing therapeutic cancer vaccines, sparking intensive interest in the development of more effective in situ vaccines. Herein, we introduce a cancer nanovaccine for reactive oxygen species-augmented metalloimmunotherapy in which FeAl-layered double hydroxide (LDH) is used as a delivery vehicle with dihydroartemisinin (DHA) as cargo. The LDH framework is acid-labile and can be degraded in the tumor microenvironment, releasing iron ions, aluminum ions, and DHA. The iron ions contribute to aggravated intratumoral oxidative stress injury by the synergistic Fenton reaction and DHA activation, causing apoptosis, ferroptosis, and immunogenic cell death in cancer cells. The subsequently released tumor-associated antigens with the aluminum adjuvant form a cancer nanovaccine to generate robust and long-term immune responses against cancer recurrence and metastasis. Moreover, Fe ion-enabled T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging can facilitate real-time tumor therapy monitoring. This cancer-nanovaccine-mediated metalloimmunotherapy strategy has the potential for revolutionizing the precision immunotherapy landscape.

ABSTRACT

PROBLEM: Emergence delirium (ED) in children post-general anesthesia has been persistently underestimated, impacting the well-being of children, nurses, and even parents. This study employs integrated analysis to establish a comprehensive understanding of ED, including its occurrence and related risk factors, emphasizing the imperative for enhanced awareness and comprehension among pediatric nursing care providers. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted using four electronic databases, namely PubMed, CINAHL via EBSCOhost, Embase via Elsevier, and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses. RESULTS: This meta-analysis included 16 studies involving 9598 children who underwent general anesthesia. The pooled prevalence of ED was 19.2% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.12 to 0.29), with younger patients exhibiting a higher prevalence of ED. ED research is scant in Africa and is mostly limited to the Asia Pacific region and Northern Europe. Neck and head surgery (odds ratio [OR] = 2.34, 95% CI = 1.29 to 4.27) were significantly associated with ED risk. CONCLUSIONS: ED should be monitored in children who receive general anesthesia. In this study, ED had a prevalence rate of 19.2%, and head and neck surgery were significantly associated with ED risk. Therefore, healthcare professionals should carefully manage and prevent ED in children undergoing general anesthesia. IMPLICATIONS: A comprehensive understanding of ED's prevalence and risk factors is crucial for enhancing nursing care. Adopting a family-centered care approach can empower parents with information to collaboratively care for their children, promoting a holistic approach to pediatric healthcare.

ABSTRACT

Global warming is leading to extended stratification in deep lakes, which may exacerbate phosphorus (P) limitation in the upper waters. Conversion of labile dissolved organic P (DOP) is a possible adaptive strategy to maintain primary production. To test this, the spatiotemporal distributions of various soluble P fractions and phosphomonesterase (PME)/phosphodiesterase (PDE) activities were investigated in Lake Fuxian during the stratification period and the transition capacity of organic P and its impact on primary productivity were evaluated. The results indicated that the DOP concentration (mean 0.20 ± 0.05 µmol L-1) was significantly higher than that of dissolved inorganic P (DIP) (mean 0.08 ± 0.03 µmol L-1) in the epilimnion and metalimnion, which were predominantly composed of orthophosphate monoester (monoester-P) and orthophosphate diesters (diester-P). The low ratio of diester-P / monoester-P and high activities of PME and PDE indicate DOP mineralization in the epilimnion and metalimnion. We detected a DIP threshold of approximately 0.19 µmol L-1, corresponding to the highest total PME activity in the lake. Meta-analysis further demonstrated that DIP thresholds of PME activities were prevalent in oligotrophic (0.19 µmol L-1) and mesotrophic (0.74 µmol L-1) inland waters. In contrast to the phosphate-sensitive phosphatase PME, dissolved PDE was expressed independent of phosphate availability and its activity invariably correlated with chlorophyll a, suggesting the involvement of phytoplankton in DOP utilization. This study provides important field evidence for the DOP transformation processes and the strategy for maintaining primary productivity in P-deficient scenarios, which contributes to the understanding of P cycles and the mechanisms of system adaptation to future long-term P limitations in stratified waters.

ABSTRACT

The present study was carried out to evaluate the effects of dietary vitamin E (VE) or grape seed extract (GSE) on the growth performance and antioxidant function of broilers. Two hundred sixteen broiler chicks were randomly assigned to 3 diets: diet supplemented with oxidized rice bran oil (CN group), CN group with 25 mg/kg VE or 100 mg/kg GSE. Dietary VE or GSE improved the growth performance, reverted the disturbed levels of liver antioxidant enzymes, and reduced liver damage of broilers fed oxidized rice bran oil. The mRNA data showed that supplementation of VE or GSE enhanced the antioxidant capacity of the broiler liver through activation of the Keap1-Nrf2/ARE signaling pathway. The results suggested that VE and GSE can increase weight gain, improve the oxidative status, and alleviate liver injury in broiler chicken fed oxidized rice bran oil.

ABSTRACT

Combination of different therapies is an attractive approach for cancer therapy. However, it is a challenge to synchronize different therapies for maximization of therapeutic effects. In this work, a smart composite scaffold that could synchronize magnetic hyperthermia and chemotherapy was prepared by hybridization of magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles and doxorubicin (Dox)-loaded thermosensitive liposomes with biodegradable polymers. Irradiation of alternating magnetic field (AMF) could not only increase the scaffold temperature for magnetic hyperthermia but also trigger the release of Dox for chemotherapy. The two functions of magnetic hyperthermia and chemotherapy were synchronized by switching AMF on and off. The synergistic anticancer effects of the composite scaffold were confirmed by in vitro cell culture and in vivo animal experiments. The composite scaffold could efficiently eliminate breast cancer cells under AMF irradiation. Moreover, the scaffold could support proliferation and adipogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells for adipose tissue reconstruction after anticancer treatment. In vivo regeneration experiments showed that the composite scaffolds could effectively maintain their structural integrity and facilitate the infiltration and proliferation of normal cells within the scaffolds. The composite scaffold possesses multi-functions and is attractive as a novel platform for efficient breast cancer therapy.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Jolkinolide B (JB), an ent­abietane-type diterpenoid in Euphorbia plants, has various pharmacological activities, including anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tuberculosis activities. However, no previous studies have proven whether JB can be regarded as a targeted drug for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the anti-RA effects of JB and explore the potential mechanisms. METHODS: Components and targets of JB and RA were identified in different databases, and potential targets and pathways were predicted by protein-protein interaction (PPI) network analysis and pathway enrichment analysis. Then, molecular docking and surface-plasmon resonance (SPR) were used to confirm the predict. The anti-arthritic effects of JB were studied in vivo with collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) rat model and in vitro with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and interleukin-6 (IL-6)-induced RAW264.7 macrophage. Potential mechanisms were further verified by in vivo and in vitro experiments. RESULTS: The Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis showed that Th17 cell differentiation, prolactin signaling pathway, and JAK/STAT signaling pathway might be associated with anti-RA effects of JB. Molecular docking and SPR results showed that JB bound effectively to JAK2. JB significantly decreased body weight loss, arthritis index, paw thickness, and synovial thickness in CIA rats. Histomorphological results suggested the protective effects of JB on CIA rats with ankle joint injury. Molecular biology analysis indicated that JB suppressed the mRNA expression of inflammatory factors in ankle joints for CIA rats and reduced the concentration of these factors in LPS- induced RAW264.7 macrophage. The protein expression level of the JAK2/STAT3 pathway was also significantly decreased by JB. CONCLUSION: JB had a novel inhibitory effect on inflammation and bone destruction in CIA rats, and the mechanism might be related to the JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway.

BACKGROUND: A lack of confidence in perinatal bereavement care (PBC) and the psychological trauma experienced by nurses and midwives during bereavement care leads to their strong need for sufficient organisational support. The current study intended to test a hypothesised model of the specific impact paths among organisational support, confidence in PBC, secondary traumatic stress, and emotional exhaustion among nurses and midwives. METHODS: A descriptive, cross-sectional survey was conducted in sixteen maternity hospitals in Zhejiang Province, China, from August to October 2021. The sample (n = 779) consisted of obstetric nurses and midwives. A path analysis was used to test the relationships among study variables and assess model fit. RESULTS: Organisational support directly and positively predicted confidence in PBC and demonstrated a direct, negative, and significant association with secondary traumatic stress and emotional exhaustion. Confidence in PBC had a positive direct effect on secondary traumatic stress and a positive indirect effect on emotional exhaustion via secondary traumatic stress. Secondary traumatic stress exhibited a significant, direct effect on emotional exhaustion. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that nurses' and midwives' confidence in PBC and mental health were leadingly influenced by organisational support in perinatal bereavement practice. It is worth noting that higher confidence in PBC may lead to more serious psychological trauma symptoms in nurses and midwives. Secondary traumatic stress plays an essential role in contributing to emotional exhaustion. The findings suggest that support from organisations and self-care interventions were required to improve confidence in PBC and reduce negative psychological outcomes among those providing PBC. The development of objective measures for assessing competence in PBC and organizational support are essential.

ABSTRACT

RATIONALE: In recent decades, the incidence of perennial allergic rhinitis (PAR) has been increasing annually. However, some patients could not achieve adequate symptomatic relief with routine pharmacological treatment. Consequently, there exists an urgent clinical imperative for the development of safe and efficacious treatments with sustained therapeutic impact to ameliorate the symptomatic burden and enhance the quality of life. PATIENT CONCERNS: The patient was a 35-year-old woman. She had suffered moderate and severe refractory PAR for decades and failed to sustain symptom mitigation from regular treatment. DIAGNOSES: Perennial allergic rhinitis. INTERVENTIONS: The patient underwent a 4-week course of fire needle acupuncture at Neiyingxiang, administered weekly, during which all allopathic medication was discontinued. OUTCOMES: The total nasal symptoms score, total non nasal symptoms score, rhinoconjunctivitis quality of life questionnaire, and the total nasal resistance of the patient were decreased after treatment and achieved symptomatic relief. Follow-up conducted 3 months post-treatment revealed enduring symptom relief, with only sporadic nasal congestion elicited by cold stimulus. LESSONS: This case proves that, fire needle acupuncture at Neiyingxiang may be beneficial in treating moderate and severe refractory PAR patient and have a lasting effect.

OBJECTIVES: Sanshimao (SSM) is a traditional Chinese medicine formula for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This study was designed to investigate the effect of SSM on HCC-induced angiogenesis and to explore the potential mechanism. METHODS: The endothelial cells were cultured with HCC cells conditioned medium in the 1% oxygen atmosphere to imitate tumor hypoxia microenvironment. EA.hy926 cells migration and tubulogenesis were detected by tube formation and scratch-wound assay. The protein microarray was employed to explore SSM-targeted proteins in Huh7 cells. We also established an animal model to observe the effects of SSM on angiogenesis in vivo. RESULTS: The data indicated that SSM reduced HCC-induced migration and tube formation of EA.hy926 cells at low dose under hypoxic conditions. These effects might be partly owing to suppression of HIF-1α-induced vascular endothelial growth factorα expression in Huh7 cells. Moreover, this inhibition was in an MKK6/P38-dependent way. Besides, Huh7 subcutaneous tumor models in nude mice further demonstrated the inhibition of SSM on tumor weight might be exerted partly by reduction of angiogenesis via blocking MKK6/P38 signaling pathways. CONCLUSION: SSM inhibits HCC-induced pro-angiogenesis under hypoxic conditions via suppression of MKK6/P38 signaling pathways, which is favorable for HCC tumor growth.

Pyroptosis, as an inflammatory cell death, has been widely applied in tumor therapy, but its systemic adverse reactions caused by nonspecific activation still seriously hinder its application. Herein, a near-infrared (NIR) light-triggered thermoresponsive pyroptosis strategy is designed for on-demand initiation of pyroptosis and synergistic tumor immunotherapy. Specifically, glucose oxidase (GOx) loaded and heat-sensitive material p(OEOMA-co-MEMA) (PCM) modified mesoporous Pt nanoparticles (abbreviated as PCM Pt/GOx) are prepared as the mild-temperature triggered pyroptosis inducer. Pt nanoparticles can not only serve as nanozyme with catalase-like activity to promote GOx catalytic reaction, but also act as photothermal agent to achieve mild-temperature photothermal therapy (PTT) and thermoresponsive GOx release on-demand under the irradiation of NIR light, thereby activating and promoting pyroptosis. In vitro and in vivo experiments prove that NIR light-triggered thermoresponsive pyroptosis system exhibits excellent antitumor immunity activity as well as significantly inhibits tumor growth. The precise control of pyroptosis by NIR light as well as pyroptosis cooperated with mild-temperature PTT for synergistically attenuated tumor immunotherapy are reported for the first time. This work provides a new method to initiate pyroptosis on demand, which is of great significance for spatiotemporally controllable pyroptosis and immunotherapy.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the effect of Xiaoxuming Decoction(XXMD) on the activation of astrocytes after cerebral ischemia/reperfusion(I/R) injury. The model of cerebral IR injury was established using the middle cerebral artery occlusion method. Fluorocitrate(FC), an inhibitor of astrocyte activation, was applied to inhibit astrocyte activation. Rats were randomly divided into a sham group, a model group, a XXMD group, a XXMD+FC group, and a XXMD+Vehicle group. Neurobehavioral changes at 24 hours after cerebral IR injury, cerebral infarction, histopathological changes observed through HE staining, submicroscopic structure of astrocytes observed through transmission electron microscopy, fluorescence intensity of glial fibrillary acidic protein(GFAP) and thrombospondin 1(TSP1) measured through immunofluorescence, and expression of GFAP and TSP1 in brain tissue measured through Western blot were evaluated in rats from each group. The experimental results showed that neurobehavioral scores and cerebral infarct area significantly increased in the model group. The XXMD group, the XXMD+FC group, and the XXMD+Vehicle group all alleviated neurobehavioral changes in rats. The pathological changes in the brain were evident in the model group, while the XXMD group, the XXMD+FC group, and the XXMD+Vehicle group exhibited milder cerebral IR injury in rats. The submicroscopic structure of astrocytes in the model group showed significant swelling, whereas the XXMD group, the XXMD+FC group, and XXMD+Vehicle group protected the submicroscopic structure of astrocytes. The fluorescence intensity and protein expression of GFAP and TSP1 increased in the model group compared with those in the sham group. However, the XXMD group, the XXMD+FC group, and XXMD+Vehicle group all down-regulated the expression of GFAP and TSP1. The combination of XXMD and FC showed a more pronounced effect. These results indicate that XXMD can improve cerebral IR injury, possibly by inhibiting astrocyte activation and down-regulating the expression of GFAP and TSP1.

The present study aimed to assess the impact of grape seed extract (GSE), onion peel extract (OPE), and rosemary extract (ROE) on Diquat-induced growth restriction and oxidative stress in Lohmann chicks. A total of 200 chicks were randomly assigned to 5 diets: the positive control (PC) group, the negative control (NC) group, GSE group, OPE group, and ROE group. During the first 7 d of trial, compared with NC and PC groups, the GSE group enhanced average daily feed intake (ADFI). From day 8-21, diquat injection resulted in reduced growth performance, increased platelet volume distribution width (PWD), malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration, and activities of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in chick serum; it also decreased total protein (TP), albumin (ALB), globulin (GLB) concentration, activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) in chick serum; furthermore, it increased MDA concentration while decreasing GST activities in liver. The NC group exhibited lower average daily gain (ADG) than other groups. Compared with NC group, GSE group reduced ALT activities, MDA levels, and red cell distribution width (RDW), and PDW concentration; it also increased SOD, GST activities. The ROE group lowered ALT activities and MDA concentration. The OPE group decreased ALT activities, and MDA levels, RDW, and PDW concentration, and increased SOD activities of chicks. These results suggest that supplementing antioxidants in diets alleviated oxidative stress in chicks challenged by improving antioxidant capacity and liver function.

ABSTRACT

As global warming progresses, heat waves are becoming increasingly frequent and intense, meanwhile the incidence of heat stroke (HS) has increased sharply during the past decades. HS is typically associated with significant morbidity and mortality, and there is an urgent need for further research to solve this difficult issue. There currently exists difficulties regarding on-site emergency treatment methods and limited in-hospital treatment approaches, and better treatments are required as soon as possible. Theories and therapies from various traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) academic groups have been widely reported. Therefore, an exploration of prevention and protection methods should consider TCM experiences as an alternative. This article primarily reviews TCM herbal therapies and external therapies that have been described in various clinical reports and demonstrated in relevant studies. Herbal therapies, including herbal formulas, Chinese patent medicines (CPMs), single Chinese herbs, and associated extracts or monomers, are summarized based on the shared perspectives of the underlying mechanisms from TCM. In addition, external therapies including acupuncture, bloodletting, cupping, Gua sha and Tui na that have rarely been rarely mentioned and considered in most cases, are introduced and discussed to offer a unique perspective in the search for novel interventions for HS. In summary, TCM may provide abundant potential clinical benefits and research directions in the fight against HS.

ABSTRACT

Notwithstanding that immunotherapy has made eminent clinical breakthroughs, activating the immunogenicity and breaking the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (ITME) remains tempting yet challenging. Herein, a customized-designed immunostimulant is engineered for attenuating ITME and eliciting an immune response to address this challenge head-on. This immunostimulant is equipped with dual silica layers coated upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) as nanocarriers modified with endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-targeted molecular N-p-Tosylglycine, in which the dense silica for chlorin e6 (Ce6) and the glutathione (GSH)-responsive degradable silica for loading resveratrol (RES) - (UCSMRER ). On the one hand, this precise ER-targeted photodynamic therapy (PDT) can generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) in situ under the 980 nm laser irradiation, which not only induced severe cell death directly but also caused intense ER stress-based immunogenic cell death (ICD). On the other hand, tumor hypoxia aggravated by the PDT is alleviated by RES released on-demand, which reduced oxygen consumption by impairing the mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC). This integrated precise ER-targeted and oxygen-compensated strategy maximized the PDT effect and potentiated ICD-associated immunotherapy, which availed to attenuate ITME, activate tumor immunogenicity, and further magnify the anti-tumor effect. This innovative concept about PDT and immunotherapy sheds light on cancer-related clinical application.

ABSTRACT

Understanding the evolutionary forces in speciation is a central goal in evolutionary biology. Asian cultivated rice has two subspecies, indica and japonica, but the underlying mechanism of the partial reproductive isolation between them remains obscure. Here we show a presence-absence variation (PAV) at the Se locus functions as an indica-japonica reproductive barrier by causing hybrid sterility (HS) in indica-japonica crosses. The locus comprises two adjacent genes: ORF3 encodes a sporophytic pollen killer, whereas ORF4 protects pollen in a gametophytic manner. In F1 of indica-japonica crosses, pollen with the japonica haplotype, which lacks the sequence containing the protective ORF4, is aborted due to the pollen-killing effect of ORF3 from indica. Evolutionary analysis suggests ORF3 is a gene associated with the Asian cultivated rice species complex, and the PAV has contributed to the reproductive isolation between the two subspecies of Asian cultivated rice. Our analyses provide perspectives on rice inter-subspecies post-zygotic isolation, and will promote efforts to overcome reproductive barriers in indica-japonica hybrid rice breeding.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to explore the effect of Xiaoxuming Decoction on synaptic plasticity in rats with acute cerebral ischemia-reperfusion. A rat model of cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury was established by middle cerebral artery occlusion(MCAO). Rats were randomly assigned into a sham group, a MCAO group, and a Xiaoxuming Decoction(60 g·kg~(-1)·d~(-1)) group. The Longa score was rated to assess the neurological function of rats with cerebral ischemia for 1.5 h and reperfusion for 24 h. The 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride(TTC) staining and hematoxylin-eosin(HE) staining were employed to observe the cerebral infarction and the pathological changes of brain tissue after cerebral ischemia, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy was employed to detect the structural changes of neurons and synapses in the ischemic penumbra, and immunofluorescence, Western blot to determine the expression of synaptophysin(SYN), neuronal nuclei(NEUN), and postsynaptic density 95(PSD95) in the ischemic penumbra. The experimental results showed that the modeling increased the Longa score and led to cerebral infarction after 24 h of ischemia-reperfusion. Compared with the model group, Xiaoxuming Decoction intervention significantly decreased the Longa score and reduced the formation of cerebral infarction area. The modeling led to the shrinking and vacuolar changes of nuclei in the brain tissue, disordered cell arrangement, and severe cortical ischemia-reperfusion injury, while the pathological damage in the Xiaoxuming Decoction group was mild. The modeling blurred the synaptic boundaries and broadened the synaptic gap, while such changes were recovered in the Xiaoxuming Decoction group. The modeling decreased the fluorescence intensity of NEUN and SYN, while the intensity in Xiaoxuming Decoction group was significantly higher than that in the model group. The expression of SYN and PSD95 in the ischemic penumbra was down-regulated in the model group, while such down-regulation can be alleviated by Xiaoxuming Decoction. In summary, Xiaoxuming Decoction may improve the synaptic plasticity of ischemic penumbra during acute cerebral ischemia-reperfusion by up-regulating the expression of SYN and PSD95.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To establish a method for directional screening of the cytotoxic components from the medicinal herb of Achnatherum inebrians by a combination of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor and chromatographic isolation technology. Methods: Under the guidance of bioactive assessment based on binding abilities between objects and the α-Mannosidase (α-Man) target, the active components from different solvents extracts, different polar extraction parts and fractions were screened orderly and directionally using SPR. Components with a high binding ability to α-Man can be precisely oriented in a narrower fractions range and are easy to isolate. Three human cancer cells were used to evaluate the cytotoxic activity of component with the highest affinity to α-Man. Results: Eight compounds were isolated and identificated from A. inebrians for the first time. Deoxyvasicinone possessed the highest affinity to α-Man among them. Moreover, deoxyvasicinone showed good effects on inhibited proliferation of human hepatoma cells HepG2 (IC50 = 5.7 µmol/L), human breast cancer cells MCF7 (IC50 = 7.21 µmol/L) and human lung cancer cells HCC827 (IC50 = 0.75 µmol/L), respectively. In particular, its inhibitory effect on HCC827 was stronger than the positive drug gefitinib (IC50 = 1.65 µmol/L). Conclusion: A comprehensive strategy of directional screening potential cytotoxic components from herb based on biomolecular interaction and chromatography was established. Deoxyvasicinone as an effective anti-cancer component was initially isolated from A. inebrians. It is expected that this screening strategy could provide new perspectives for rapid screening and identification of active components from natural plants with the complex matrix.

ABSTRACT

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has posed a global health crisis. Increasing evidence underlines the key role of competent immune responses in resisting SARS-CoV-2 infection and manifests the disastrous consequence of host immune dysregulation. Elucidating the mechanisms responsible for deregulated host immunity in COVID-19 may provide a theoretical basis for further research on new treatment modalities. Gut microbiota comprises trillions of microorganisms colonizing the human gastrointestinal tract and has a vital role in immune homeostasis and the gut-lung crosstalk. Particularly, SARS-CoV-2 infection can lead to the disruption of gut microbiota equilibrium, a condition called gut dysbiosis. Due to its regulatory effect on host immunity, gut microbiota has recently received considerable attention in the field of SARS-CoV-2 immunopathology. Imbalanced gut microbiota can fuel COVID-19 progression through production of bioactive metabolites, intestinal metabolism, enhancement of the cytokine storm, exaggeration of inflammation, regulation of adaptive immunity and other aspects. In this review, we provide an overview of the alterations in gut microbiota in COVID-19 patients, and their effects on individuals' susceptibility to viral infection and COVID-19 progression. Moreover, we summarize currently available data on the critical role of the bidirectional regulation between intestinal microbes and host immunity in SARS-CoV-2-induced pathology, and highlight the immunomodulatory mechanisms of gut microbiota contributing to COVID-19 pathogenesis. In addition, we discuss the therapeutic benefits and future perspectives of microbiota-targeted interventions including faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), bacteriotherapy and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in COVID-19 treatment.

ABSTRACT

The highly effective utilization of uranium resources in global seawater is a viable method to satisfy the rising demands for fueling nuclear energy industry. Herein, inspired by the multi-mechanisms of the marine bacteria for uranium immobilization, CdS nanoparticles are deposited on the cell of marine bacterial strain Bacillus velezensis UUS-1 to create a photosensitized biohybrid system UUS-1/CdS. This system achieves high uranium extraction efficiency using a cascaded strategy, where the bacterial cells guarantee high extraction selectivity and the photosensitive CdS nanoparticles realize cascading photoreduction of high soluble U(VI) to low soluble U(IV) to enhance extraction capacity. As one of the fastest-acting adsorbents in natural seawater, a high extraction capacity for uranium of 7.03 mg g-1 is achieved with an ultrafast extraction speed of 4.69 mg g-1 d-1. The cascaded strategy promisingly improves uranium extraction performance and pioneers a new direction for the design of adsorbents to extract uranium from seawater.

ABSTRACT

The present study investigated the chemical constituents from the leaves of Craibiodendron yunnanense. The compounds were isolated and purified from the leaves of C. yunnanense by a combination of various chromatographic techniques including column chromatography over polyamide, silica gel, Sephadex LH-20, and reversed-phase HPLC. Their structures were identified by extensive spectroscopic analyses including MS and NMR data. As a result, 10 compounds, including melionoside F(1), meliosmaionol D(2), naringenin(3), quercetin-3-O-α-L-arabinopyranoside(4), epicatechin(5), quercetin-3'-glucoside(6), corbulain Ib(7), loliolide(8), asiatic acid(9), and ursolic acid(10), were isolated. Compounds 1 and 2 were two new compounds, and compound 7 was isolated from this genus for the first time. All compounds showed no significant cytotoxic activity by MTT assay.
