ABSTRACT

Background and aim: A large number of recent studies have reported on the use of antioxidants in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant effects on PCOS. Methods: We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and The Cochrane Library to identify randomized controlled trials investigating the use of antioxidants in treating PCOS. Statistical analysis was performed using Review Manager 5.4. Stata17.0 software was used to conduct sensitivity analyses. Results: This meta-analysis included 49 articles and 62 studies. The sample comprised 1657 patients with PCOS from the antioxidant group and 1619 with PCOS from the placebo group. The meta-analysis revealed that the fasting blood glucose levels [standardized mean difference (SMD): -0.31, 95% confidence interval (CI): -0.39 to -0.22, P < 0.00001], the homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (SMD: -0.68, 95% CI: -0.87 to -0.50], P < 0.00001), and insulin levels (SMD: -0.68, 95% CI: -0.79 to -0.58, P < 0.00001) were significantly lower in patients with PCOS taking antioxidants than those in the placebo group. Further, total cholesterol levels (SMD: -0.38, 95% CI: -0.56 to -0.20, P < 0.001), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels (SMD: -0.24, 95% CI: -0.37 to -0.10, P = 0.0008), and very low-density lipoprotein levels (SMD: -0.53, 95% CI: -0.65 to -0.41, P < 0.00001) were lower in patients with PCOS taking antioxidant supplements compared with the placebo group. Total testosterone (TT) level (SMD: -0.78, 95% CI: -1.15 to -0.42, P < 0.0001), dehydroepiandrosterone level (SMD: -0.42, 95% CI: -0.58 to -0.25, P < 0.00001), and mean standard deviation modified Ferriman-Gallway (MF-G scores) (SMD: -0.63, 95% CI: -0.98 to -0.28, P = 0.0004) were lower in patients taking antioxidant supplements. C-reactive protein (CRP) levels (SMD: -0.48, 95% CI: -0.63 to -0.34, P < 0.000001), body mass index [mean difference (MD): -0.27, 95% CI: -0.50 to -0.03, P = 0.03], weight (MD: -0.73, 95% CI: -1.35 to -0.11, P = 0.02), and diastolic blood pressure (MD: -3.78, 95% CI: -6.30 to -1.26, P = 0.003) were significantly lower. Moreover, the levels of sex hormone-binding protein (SMD: 0.23, 95% CI: 0.07-0.38, P = 0.004), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (SMD: 0.11, 95% CI: 0.01-0.20, P = 0.03), total antioxidant capacity (SMD: 0.59, 95% CI: 0.31-0.87, P < 0.0001), and quantitative insulin sensitivity index (SMD: 0.01, 95% CI: 0.01-0.02, P < 0.00001) were higher in patients with PCOS who took antioxidant supplements compared with the placebo group. Antioxidant supplements did not affect other analyzed parameters in these patients, including follicle-stimulating hormone, free androgen index, nitric oxide, glutathione, malondialdehyde, and diastolic blood pressure. Conclusions: Antioxidants are beneficial in treating PCOS. Our study might provide a new treatment strategy for patients with clinical PCOS. We hope that more high-quality studies evaluating the effects of antioxidants on patients with PCOS will be conducted in the future. ABSTRACT

The natural product Huperzine A isolated from Huperzia serrata is a targeted inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase that has been approved for clinical use in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. Given the large demand for natural sources of Huperzine A  (Hup. A), efforts have been made to explore whether it is also produced by endophytic fungi from H. serrata and, if so, identify its biosynthetic pathway. These studies have indicated that endophytic fungi from H. serrata represent a huge and largely untapped resource for natural products (including Hup. A) with chemical structures that have been optimized by evolution for biological and ecological relevance. To date, more than three hundred endophytic fungi have been isolated from H. serrata, of which 9 strains can produce Hup. A, whilst more than 20 strains produce other important metabolites, such as polyketones, xanthones, alkaloids, steroids, triterpenoids, furanone derivatives, tremulane sesquitepenes and diterpenoids. In total, 200 secondary metabolites have been characterized in endophytic fungi from H. serrata to date. Functionally, some have cholinesterase-inhibitory or antibacterial activity. This review also considers the different classes of secondary metabolites produced by endophytic fungi, along with their possible applications. We systematically describe the taxonomy, biology, and chemistry of these secondary metabolites. It also summarizes the biosynthetic synthesis of metabolites, including that of Hup. A. The review will aid researchers in obtaining a clearer understanding of this plant-endophyte relationship to better exploit the excellent resources it offers that may be utilized by pharmaceutical industries.

ABSTRACT

With CA16, enterovirus-71 is the causative agent of hand foot and mouth disease (HFMD) which occurs mostly in children under 5 years-old and responsible of several outbreaks since a decade. Most of the time, HFMD is a mild disease but can progress to severe complications such as meningitis, brain stem encephalitis, acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) and even death; EV71 has been identified in all severe cases. Therefore, it is actually one of the most public health issues that threatens children's life. [Formula: see text] is a protease which plays important functions in EV71 infection. To date, a lot of [Formula: see text] inhibitors have been tested but none of them has been approved yet. Therefore, a drug screening is still an utmost importance in order to treat and/or prevent EV71 infections. This work highlights the EV71 life cycle, [Formula: see text] functions and [Formula: see text] inhibitors recently screened. It permits to well understand all mechanisms about [Formula: see text] and consequently allow further development of drugs targeting [Formula: see text]. Thus, this review is helpful for screening of more new [Formula: see text] inhibitors or for designing analogues of well known [Formula: see text] inhibitors in order to improve its antiviral activity.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to analyze the dynamic characteristics of seed rain on abandoned slopes in the hilly-gullied Loess Plateau region and identify the relationship between seed rain and standing vegetation. Three abandoned slopes were chosen as sampling sites in Zhifanggou watershed. Thirty traps were installed at each site to collect seed rain from October 2010 to April 2013. Standing vegetation was surveyed to identify dominant species in August 2011 and 2012, respectively. Thirty-seven species belonging to seventeen families were identified in the seed rain, and the dominant species, i.e., Lespedeza davurica, Astragalus scaberrimus, Setaria viridis, Cleistogenes squarrosa, Stipa bungeana, Bothriochloa ischcemum, Artemisia scoparia, A. gmelinii, and Heteropappus altaicus, took up to 95.8% of the total seed rain. Three species in seed rain were not found in the standing vegetation. The Sorensen similarity index between seed rain and standing vegetation was 0.77. Seed rain densities were 3737 and 6449 seeds · m(-2) in May 2011-April 2012 and May 2012-April 2013, respectively, and alternate bearing existed. During the study period, seed rain from different positions varied from 3853 to 37923 seeds · m(-2) and belonged to 7-15 species. The results indicated the space limitation of seed dispersal. Seed rain densities were in the middle of the pack compared with similar ecosystems in other studies. High temporal and spatial heterogeneity of seed rain was observed because of rainfall, microtopography and so on.

ABSTRACT

A method for the determination of Eu in Long-aferglow of the SrAl2O4:Eu2+, Dy3+ phospher samples by laser microemission spectral analysis was developed. And the accuracy of this method was studied. Analyses of Eu in Long-aferglow of the SrA1204: Eu2+, Dy3+ phospher samples, using the Eu (11) line at 412.973 nm, show that RSD of relative intensity of spectral lines is 4.3%, RSD of quantitative analysis is 7.4%, the average of quantitative analysis is 2.13%. Compared with the content before samples synthesized, it can be concluded that the content of Eu in the SrAl2O4:Eu2+, Dy3+ phospher samples synthesized by high temperature solid phase reaction has an obvious increase.
