ABSTRACT

ABSTRACTThe problem of wastewater pollution in the production of monosodium glutamate (MSG) is becoming more and more serious. A novel type of chemically modified Salix psammophila powder charcoal (SPPCAM) was synthesized to address the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) in MSG wastewater. SPPCAM was prepared by carbonization method, in which inorganic ammonium molybdate (AM) was used as modifier and Salix psammophila powder (SPP) was used as raw material. Under optimal treatment conditions, maximum removal rates (removal capacities) of 45.9% (3313.2 mg·L-1) for COD and 29.4% (23.2 mg·L-1) for NH3-N in MSG wastewater were achieved. The treatment results significantly outperforming the unmodified Salix psammophila powder charcoal (SPPC), which only achieved removal rates (removal capacities) of 10.6% (763.9 mg·L-1) for COD and 12.9% (10 mg·L-1) for NH3-N. SPPC and SPPCAM before and after preparation were analysed by FT-IR and XRD, and Mo ions in the form of Mo2C within SPPCAM were successfully loaded. SEM, EDS-Mapping, BET, and other methods were used to analyse SPPCAM before and after MSG wastewater treatment, demonstrating that SPPCAM effectively treated organic pollutants in monosodium glutamate wastewater. The NH3-N in the treated MSG wastewater has reached the standard of safe discharge.

ABSTRACT

Driven by the anthropogenic activities associated with coastal settlements, eutrophication has become a global issue. Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) is a significant continuous pathway for transporting nutrients from land to coastal waters, but its influence on eutrophication in Liaodong Bay (LDB) has received limited attention. In this study, radium isotopes and nutrient data from coastal waters were analyzed to evaluate the SGD flux and its implications for potential eutrophication in LDB. We found that the mean concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), phosphorous (DIP), and silicate (DSi) in groundwater were higher than those of seawater and river water. Based on 223Ra and 228Ra mass balance models, the SGD fluxes were estimated to be (0.53-2.03) × 109 m3/d, of which the fresh SGD accounted for 4 %-15 %. SGD is a vital invisible source of nutrients, contributing more than 79 % of the total inputs of DIN, DIP, and DSi into LDB. With high DIN/DIP ratios (average=85.8) and large nutrient inputs, SGD may significantly drive the phosphorus limitation and eutrophication in LDB. This study shows that SGD-derived nutrient fluxes should be considered in the assessment of water eutrophication for the formulation of future environmental management protocols in coastal systems.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The diterpenoid alkaloids belong to a highly esteemed group of natural compounds, which display significant biological activities. It is a productive strategy to expand the chemical space of these intriguing natural compounds for drug discovery. METHODS: We prepared a series of new derivatives bearing diverse skeletons and functionalities from the diterpenoid alkaloids deltaline and talatisamine based on a diversity-oriented synthesis strategy. The anti-inflammatory activity of these derivatives was initially screened and evaluated by the release of nitric oxide (NO), tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated RAW264.7 cells. Futhermore, the anti-inflammatory activity of the representative derivative 31a was validated in various inflammatory animal models, including phorbol ester 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA)-induced mice ear edema, LPS-stimulated acute kidney injury, and collagen-induced arthritis (CIA). RESULTS: It was found that several derivatives were able to suppress the secretion of NO, TNF-α, and IL-6 in LPS-activated RAW264.7 cells. Compound 31a, one of the representative derivatives named as deltanaline, demonstrated the strongest anti-inflammatory effects in LPS-activated macrophages and three different animal models of inflammatory diseases by inhibiting nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB)/mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling and inducing autophagy. CONCLUSION: Deltanaline is a new structural compound derived from natural diterpenoid alkaloids, which may serve as a new lead compound for the treatment of inflammatory diseases.

ABSTRACT

This study employed bibliometrics tools to review the studies of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) treatment of Alzheimer's disease(AD) in recent ten years, aiming to explore the research status, hotspots, and future trends in this field at home and abroad. The relevant literature published from January 1, 2012 to August 15, 2022 was retrieved from Web of Science and CNKI. CiteSpace 6.1R2 and VOSviewer 1.6.15 were used for the visual analysis of authors, countries, institutions, keywords, journals, etc. A total of 2 254 Chinese articles and 545 English articles were included. The annual number of articles published showed a rising trend with fluctuations. The country with the largest number of relevant articles published and the largest centrality was China. SUN Guo-jie and WANG Qi were the authors publishing the most Chinese articles and English articles, respectively. Hubei University of Chinese Medicine and Beijing University of Chinese Medicine published the most articles in Chinese and English, respectively. Journal of Ethnopharmacology and Neuroscience Letters published the articles with the highest cited frequency and the highest centrality. According to the keywords, the research on TCM treatment of AD mainly focused on the mechanism of action and treatment methods. Metabolomics, intestinal flora, oxidative stress, tau hyperphosphorylation, ß-amyloid(Aß), inflammatory cytokines, and autophagy were the focuses of the research on mechanism of action. Acupuncture, clinical effect, kidney deficiency and phlegm stasis, and dredging governor vessel to revitalize mind were the hotspots of clinical research. This research field is still in the stage of exploration and development. Exchanges and cooperation among institutions should be encouraged to carry out more high-quality basic research on TCM treatment of AD, obtain high-level evidence, and clarify the pathogenesis and prescription mechanism.

ABSTRACT

Estuarine mangrove wetlands have gradually declined owing to the growing construction of aquaculture ponds. How the speciation, transition, and migration of phosphorus (P) adaptively change in the sediments of this pond-wetland ecosystem remains unclear. In this study, we used high-resolution devices to explore the contrasting P behaviors associated with the redox cycles of Fe-Mn-S-As in estuarine and pond sediments. The results showed that the construction of aquaculture ponds increased the content or percentage of the silt, organic carbon, and P fractions in sediments. Dissolved organic P (DOP) concentrations in pore water were fluctuant with depths, accounting for only 18±15% and 20±11% of total dissolved P (TDP) in estuarine and pond sediment, respectively. Furthermore, DOP was less strongly correlated with other P species, including Fe, Mn, and sulfide. The coupling of dissolved reactive P (DRP) and TDP with Fe and sulfide confirmed that P mobility is regulated by Fe redox cycling in estuarine sediments, whereas Fe(III) reduction and sulfate reduction co-regulate P remobilization in pond sediments. The apparent diffusion flux revealed all sediments acting as sources for TDP (0.04-0.1 mg m-2 d-1) to the overlying water, while mangrove sediments were sources of DOP, and pond sediments were major sources of DRP. The DIFS model overestimated the P kinetic resupply ability, which was evaluated using DRP rather than TDP. This study improves our understanding of P cycling and budget in aquaculture pond-mangrove ecosystems and has important implications for understanding water eutrophication more effectively.

ABSTRACT

In this study, a combination of metabolomics and network pharmacology was used to study the pharmacodynamic substances and mechanism of action of Yiyi Fuzi powder (YYFZ) on rheumatoid arthritis (RA) rats. The animal experiments were conducted in accordance with the requirements of the Experimental Animal Ethics Committee of Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (approval number: TCM-LAEC2021241). The metabolomic analysis using UPLC-Q-TOF/MS technique identified 22 metabolites, including arachidonic acid, tryptophan, linoleic acid, phenylalanine, as significant biomarkers for the treatment of RA with YYFZ, and they were significantly regressed after YYFZ treatment. The analysis of YYFZ blood components also revealed that 11 blood components, including hypaconitine, benzoylhypaconitine, and deoxyaconitine, may be the components that exert direct pharmacological effects in YYFZ in vivo, and further network pharmacological analysis of blood components obtained that YYFZ may exhibit anti-inflammatory effects through acting on PI3K/Akt signaling pathway, estrogen signaling pathway, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) signaling pathway. The results of this study provide implications for the clinical application of YYFZ.

ABSTRACT

House dust mite (HDM) is a globally ubiquitous domestic cause of allergic diseases. There is a pressing demand to discover efficient, harmless, and eco-friendly natural extracts to inhibit HDM allergens that are more likely to trigger allergies and challenging to be prevented entirely. This study, therefore, is aimed at assessing the inhibition of the allergenicity of major HDM allergen Der f 2 by todomatsu oil extracted from residues of Abies Sachalinensis. The inhibition was investigated experimentally (using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), surface plasmon resonance (SPR), and sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE)) and in silico using molecular docking. The results showed that todomatsu oil inhibits the allergenicity of Der f 2 by reducing its amount instead of the IgG binding capacity of a single protein. Moreover, the compounds in todomatsu oil bind to Der f 2 via alkyl hydrophobic interactions. Notably, most compounds interact with the hydrophobic amino acids of Der f 2, and seven substances interact with CYS27. Contrarily, the principal compounds fail to attach to the amino acids forming the IgG epitope in Der f 2. Interestingly, chemical components with the lowest relative percentages in todomatsu oil show high-affinity values on Der f 2, especially ß-maaliene (-8.0 kcal/mol). In conclusion, todomatsu oil has been proven in vitro as a potential effective public health strategy to inhibit the allergenicity of Der f 2.

ABSTRACT

The mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascades are present in plant species and modulate plant growth and stress responses. This study characterizes TaMPK2B, a MAPK family gene in T. aestivum that regulates plant adaptation to low-Pi stress. TaMPK2B harbors the conserved domains involving protein phosphorylation and protein-protein interaction. A yeast two-hybrid assay reveals an interaction between TaMPK2B and TaMPKK2 and between the latter and TaMPKKK;A, suggesting that all comprise a MAPK signaling cascade TaMPKKK;A-TaMPKK2-TaMPK2B. TaMPK2B expression levels were elevated in roots and leaves under a Pi starvation (PS) condition. Additionally, the induced TaMPK2B transcripts under PS in tissues were gradually restored following the Pi normal recovery condition. TaMPK2B overexpression conferred on plants improved PS adaptation; the tobacco lines with TaMPK2B overexpression enhanced the plant's dry mass production, Pi uptake capacity, root system architecture (RSA) establishment, and ROS homeostasis relative to wild type under PS treatment. Moreover, the transcripts of genes in phosphate transporter (PT), PIN-FORMED, and antioxidant enzyme (AE) families, including NtPT3 and NtPT4, NtPIN9, and NtMnSOD1 and NtPOD1;7, were elevated in Pi-deprived lines overexpressing TaMPK2B. Transgene analyses validated their functions in regulating Pi uptake, RSA establishment, and AE activities of plants treated by PS. These results suggest that TaMPK2B-mediated plant PS adaptation is correlated with the modified transcription of distinct PT, PIN, and AE genes. Our investigation suggests that TaMPK2B is one of the crucial regulators in plant low-Pi adaptation by improving Pi uptake, RSA formation, and ROS homeostasis via transcriptionally regulating genes associated with the above physiological processes.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Our study aims to explore the impact of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) alone or combined with montelukast on clinical efficiency and pulmonary function (PF) in treating patients with bronchial asthma complicated by obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS). METHODS: A total of 386 patients with bronchial asthma underwent sleep monitoring. Patients were divided into 3 groups according to the different treatment methods. The changes in PF, apnea hypopnea index (AHI) score and the level of inflammatory factors in all patients before and after treatment were recorded, and the clinical effect following treatment was noted. RESULTS: Following treatment, the clinical efficiency of Group 2 was significantly better than that of both Group 1and the control group, and the therapeutic effect in Group 1 was better than in the control group (P < .05). Before treatment, vital capacity (VC), peak expiratory flow (PEF), forced expiratory volume in 1 second/forced vital capacity (FEV1/FVC) and asthma control test (ACT) scores, AHI scores, C-reactive protein (CRP), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) index were compared between the 3 groups (P > .05). In contrast, after treatment the VC, PEF, FEV1/FVC and ACT, AHI, CRP and TNF-α scores and the IL-6 index in the 3 groups were improved compared with before treatment. The indices in Groups 1 and 2 were better than in the control group, and the VC, PEF, FEV1/FVC and ACT, AHI, CRP, and TNF-α scores and IL-6 index in Group 2 reported greater beneficial effect than in Group 1. CONCLUSION: The combination of NIV and montelukast exerts a beneficial effect in treating patients with bronchial asthma complicated with OSAHS, which holds the potential of effectively improving clinical symptoms and PF, reducing ACT and AHI scores and alleviating inflammatory reactions. Hence, the combination is valid and appropriate for clinical application.

ABSTRACT

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is recognized as the main cause of neonatal death, and efficient treatment strategies remain limited. Given the prevalence of HIE and the associated fatality, further studies on its pathogenesis are warranted. Oxidative stress and neuroinflammatory injury are two important factors leading to brain tissue injury and nerve cell loss in HIE. Neferine, an alkaloid extracted from lotus seed embryo, exerts considerable effects against several diseases such as cancers and myocardial injury. In this study, we demonstrated the neuroprotective effect of neferine on HIE and hypothesized that it involves the inhibition of neuronal pyroptosis, thereby ameliorating neurological inflammation and oxidative stress. We demonstrated that the mRNA levels of proteins associated with pyroptosis including caspase-1, the caspase adaptor ASC, gasdermin D, interleukin- (IL-) 18, IL-1ß, and some inflammatory factors were significantly increased in neonatal HIBD model rats compared to those in the control group. The increase in these factors was significantly suppressed by treatment with neferine. We stimulated PC12 cells with CoCl2 to induce neuronal HIBD in vitro and investigated the relationship between neferine and pyroptosis by altering the expression of the NLRP3 inflammasome. The overexpression of NLRP3 partially reversed the neuroprotective effect of neferine on HIBD, whereas NLRP3 knockdown further inhibited caspase-1 activation and IL-1ß and IL18 expression. In addition, simultaneous alteration of NLRP3 expression induced changes in intracellular oxidative stress levels after HIBD. These findings indicate that neferine ameliorates neuroinflammation and oxidative stress injury by inhibiting pyroptosis after HIBD. Our study provides valuable information for future studies on neferine with respect to neuroinflammation and pyroptosis.

ABSTRACT

Chronic cerebral hypoperfusion (CCH) may lead to the cognitive dysfunction, but the underlying mechanisms are unclear. EGB761, extracted from Ginkgo biloba and as a phytomedicine widely used in the world, has been showed to have various neuroprotective roles and mechanisms, and therapeutic effects in Alzheimer's disease and other cognitive dysfunctions. However, improvements in cognitive function after CCH, following treatment with EGB761, have not been ascertained yet. In this study, we used the behavior test, electrophysiology, neurobiochemistry, and immunohistochemistry to investigate the EGB761's effect on CCH-induced cognitive dysfunction and identify its underlying mechanisms. The results showed that EGB761 ameliorates spatial cognitive dysfunction occurring after CCH. It may also improve impairment of the long-term potentiation, field excitable potential, synaptic transmission, and the transmission synchronization of neural circuit signals between the entorhinal cortex and hippocampal CA1. EGB761 may also reverse the inhibition of neural activity and the degeneration of dendritic spines and synaptic structure after CCH; it also prevents the downregulation of synaptic proteins molecules and pathways related to the formation and stability of dendritic spines structures. EGB761 may inhibit axon demyelination and ameliorate the inhibition of the mTOR signaling pathway after CCH to improve protein synthesis. In conclusion, EGB761 treatment after CCH may improve spatial cognitive function by ameliorating synaptic plasticity impairment, synapse degeneration, and axon demyelination by rectifying the inhibition of the mTOR signaling pathway.

ABSTRACT

To evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of diode laser enucleation of the prostate (DiLEP) versus bipolar plasma kinetic enucleation of the prostate (PKEP) in the management of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). A systematic literature search was undertaken using PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and CKNI databases to identify eligible studies published before April 2019. The quality of evidence and methodology was assessed. Primary outcomes were clinical and demographic characteristics and postoperative efficacy including maximum flow rate (Qmax), postvoid residual (PVR), quality of life (QoL), and International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS); secondary outcomes were intraoperative variables and major complications. Meta-analyses of extracted data were performed with the RevMan version 5.2. The overall effects were determined by the Z-test, and a p value less than 0.05 was considered with significant difference. A fixed- or random-effect model was chosen to fit the pooled heterogeneity (determined by Chi-squared test and I2). As qualified trials were few, subgroup analyses were not performed. Four randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving 451 patients were enrolled in our meta-analysis. In the included trials, all the diode (wavelength at 980 nm and 1470 nm) lasers applied output at continuous wave mode; the energy settings ranged from 120 to 160 W for enucleation and 30 to 60 W for coagulation. DiLEP provided less perioperative hemoglobin decrease (MD = - 3.22; 95% CI (- 5.15, - 1.29); p = 0.001; I2 = 65%), less postoperative catheterization time (MD = - 17.82; 95% CI (- 32.74, - 2.90); p = 0.02; I2 = 96%), less postoperative irrigation time (MD = - 7.15; 95% CI (- 13.67, - 0.62); p = 0.03; I2 = 98%), and lower incidence of urinary irritative symptoms (OR = 0.31; 95% CI (0.14, 0.67); p = 0.003; I2 = 0%) compared with PKEP. During the 1, 3, 6, and 12-month postoperative follow-up, no statistically significant difference was found in Qmax, IPSS, QoL, and PVR between the procedures. As regards other perioperative and postoperative parameters and major complications, we found no significant difference. Both DiLEP and PKEP are safe and efficient methods for the treatment of BPH. However, DiLEP showed less perioperative hemoglobin decrease, less postoperative catheterization time, less postoperative irrigation time, and lower rates of postoperative irritative symptoms compared with the PKEP group.

Recent research has found that Coicis Semen not only has a good effect of removing dampness and diuresis in the theory of traditional Chinese medicine, but also can treat a variety of cancers, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, fatty liver, rheumatoid arthritis and other diseases. Furthermore, it can enhance immunity and regulate intestinal flora. It also can be used as the treatment for medicinal diet auxiliary diseases, and the clinical adverse reactions are less, and the medication is safer. Kanglaite injection with Coicis Semen oil as the main raw material has been widely used in the clinical treatment of a variety of cancers, and many health foods and medicinal diets are also under development. This paper mainly discusses the research progress on the chemical constituents and pharmacological effects of Coicis Semen, hoping to provide reference for the further study of Coicis Semen.

ABSTRACT

Metal-free layered black phosphorus (BP) nanosheets with an excellent photothermal effect and large surface areas have been widely applied in biomedicine but are easily oxidized in ambient conditions yielding insulating phosphorus oxides adsorbed on its surface. Several chemical-functionalized strategies have been explored to protect thin layers of BP; however, the performance of passivated BP often decreases significantly, falling behind the single BP due to the strong structure perturbation. Herein, we designed and constructed 0D/2D hybrid photothermal agents by assembling NIR-II-responsive carbon dots (NIR-II-CDs) on BP nanosheets. NIR-II-CDs improve the ambient stability of BP by isolating them from water and oxygen and enhance the photothermal properties of BP nanosheets. Such NIR-II-CD/BP hybrids strengthen the light-harvesting ability, achieving high photothermal conversion efficiencies in the NIR-I (77.3%) and NIR-II (61.4%) windows, which is significantly higher than that of pristine BP (49.5 and 28.4% at 808 and 1064 nm). Owing to the intrinsic advantage of 1064 nm laser and the excellent PTT effect of our NIR-II-CD/BP hybrids, complete tumor eradication was realized in a deep-tissue tumor model.

ABSTRACT

Epimedii Folium,a commonly used traditional Chinese medicine,has the effect of tonifying kidney Yang,strengthening bones and treating rheumatism. However,in recent years,the number of reports on adverse reactions of Epimedii Folium and its Chinese patent medicines such as Xianling Gubao Capsules and Zhuanggu Guanjie Pills has been gradually increased,and the toxicity of Epimedii Folium has attracted more and more attention. In this article,the ancient and modern literature on Epimedii Folium was traced through a comprehensive and systematic literature analysis method. According to the 2015 edition of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia,Epimedii Folium refers to the dried leaves of Epimedii Folium brevicomu,E. sugittutum,E. pubescens or E. koreuuum. The Chinese Pharmacopoeia also includes E. wushanense of Wushan Epimedium,which is the same plant variety as Epimedium. The study showed that there were differences in the geographical distribution,composition and toxicity among five species of Epimedium. This paper also explained the toxicity mechanism as well as efficacy enhancing and toxicity reducing effects of Epimedii Folium,and reported its related adverse reaction cases. Through a retrospective comparative study on the toxicity of the modern Chinese patent medicines Xianling Gubao Capsules and Zhuanggu Guanjie Pills containing Epimedii Folium,it was believed that Epimedii Folium had cardiovascular system toxicity,neurotoxicity,hepatotoxicity,long-term toxicity,acute toxicity,genotoxicity and special toxicity; its safe medication factors included patient syndrome,doctor factors,drug factors,processing and compatibility factors. Meanwhile,strategies were proposed to improve patient safety medication awareness,standardize Epimedii Folium varieties and quality supervision,and the toxicity of Epimedii Folium was studied,hoping to draw attention from scholars to the safety of Epimedii Folium,improve the safe use of Epimedii Folium,and prevent adverse reactions.

ABSTRACT

CONTEXT: Sulfur mustard (SM), a bifunctional alkylating agent, can react with a variety of biochemical molecules (DNA, RNA, proteins and other cell components) to cause a series of serious health issues or even death. Although a plethora of research has been done, the pathogenesis of SM poisoning has yet to be fully understood due to its high complexity. As a consequence, a specific antidote has not yet been developed and the treatment of SM poisoning remains a medical challenge. In recent years, various biological products and cell transplantation in the treatment of SM poisoning offered a significant clinical treatment progress. By highlighting these and other research studies, we hereby summarize the progress in this field in an effort to provide useful information on the clinical treatment of SM poisoning. OBJECTIVE: This review summarizes the major advances of SM poisoning therapy by means of biological products (peptide and protein drugs, polysaccharides drugs, nucleic acid drugs, etc.), and cell transplantation (e.g., bone marrow, limbal stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells), as well as other relevant biotherapeutic approaches. METHOD: We searched the database PubMed for published domestic and international articles using web based resources for information on histological, immunochemical, ultrastructural, and treatment features of SM-induced manifestations in both animal models and human tissues. To this end, we applied keywords containing mustard gas, chemical warfare, SM, eye, lung and skin. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Our review provides a comprehensive understanding of the advances of available biotherapies in SM poisoning, and its potential for the treatment of SM-induced injuries. Potentially, our review will provide new insights for future research studies in this field.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To compared the therapeutic effect of a Chinese patent medicine Naoxintong Capsule (, NXT) and aspirin with adjusted-dose warfarin in Chinese elderly patients (over 65 years) with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) and genetic variants of vitamin K epoxide reductase (VKORC1), who are at high-risk of thromboembolism. METHODS: A total of 151 patients, with NVAF and AA genotype of VKORC1-1639 (a sensitive genotype to warfarin) and a CHA2DS2-VASc clinical risk score of 2 or above, were chosen for this study. Patients were randomized into two groups and orally treated with a combination of aspirin (100 mg/day) and NXT (1.6 g thrice a day) or adjusted-dose warfarin [international normalized ratio 2.0-3.0). The primary end points including ischemic stroke and death as well as the secondary end points including hemorrhage events were followed up for at least 1 year. RESULTS: Baseline clinical data and the rates of primary end points were similar between groups. However, the rate of serious bleeding (secondary event) in the combination therapy group was lower than that in the adjusted-dose warfarin group (0% vs. 7.9%, odds ratio: 0.921, 95% confidence interval: 0.862-0.984, P=0.028). CONCLUSIONS: Aspirin combined with NXT and warfarin displayed comparable rates of primary end point including ischemic stroke and all-cause death during the 1-year follow-up. However, as compared with warfarin, the combination therapy reduced the rate of serious bleeding. Therefore, aspirin combined with NXT might provide an alternative pharmacotherapy in preventing ischemic stroke for elderly patients with NAVF who cannot tolerate warfarin. By means of preparative HPTLC and column chromatography over silica gel and Sephadex LH-20, nineteen flavonoids were isolated and purified from the whole plants of Scutellaria moniliorrhiza. Based on the physico-chemical properties and spectral data, their structures were identified as: apigenin (1), luteolin (2), wogonin (3), oroxylin A (4), 6-methoxynaringein (5), 5,7,4'-trihydroxy-6,8-dimethoxyflavone (6), 5,7,8-trimethoxyflavone (7), 3,5,6,7-tetramethoxyflavone (8), 7-hydroxy-4',5,6,8-tetramethoxyflavone (9), 5,7,2'-trihydroxy-6-methoxyflavanone (10), 5,7,4'-trihydroxy-6-methoxyflavone (11), 5,7-dihydroxy-6,8-dimethoxy -flavone (12), 5,2',6'-trihydroxy-7,8-dimethoxyflavone (13), 5,7,2'-trihydroxy-8-methoxyflavone (14), 5,2'-dihydroxy-7,8-dimethoxyflavanone (15), 2'-hydroxy-5,7,8-trimethoxyflavone (16), 5-hydroxy-7,8-dimethoxyflavone (17), 5,2'-dihydroxy-7,8-dimethoxyflavone (18), and 5-hydroxy-6,7,8-trimethoxyflavone (19). For the first time, compounds 1-19 were isolated from S. moniliorrhiza, and compounds 6, 8, 9, 12, 19 were isolated from the Scutellaria genus.
